Topic: A/B Split Testing — How to use A/B Split Testing to Increase Conversion Rates, Challenge Assumptions and Solve Problems

A/B Split Testing

Most of us are familiar with the concept of using A/B split testing to determine which elements on a page are helping the performance of a web page, and which are not.

For instance, one might typically test two different headlines on a landing page. One would then outperform the other, and you would know which is the top-performing page.

However, there is more you can do with A/B Split testing.

You can use A/B split testing to better understand visitor behaviors and priorities when visiting your site.
You can use A/B split testing to solve specific problems you have with your site pages. In other words, use it as a diagnostic tool to find out what is going wrong and how to fix it.
You can use A/B split testing to dramatically challenge assumptions you may have about the "best" way to design or write a page. (Test not only changes in minor elements, but also complete and dramatic redesigns of an entire page.)

This brings up another important point. Testing yields the most valuable results only when you test repeatedly. A one-shot test will tell you very little. But when you make a consistent habit of testing, cumulative tests over time can have a dramatic impact on the success of your site.

Our own test results, outlined in this brief, reveal just how much can be achieved and learned though a "simple" A/B split test.

Let's look at three tests and their results, each showing how we can not only improve results, but also learn more about what works, what doesn't... and what readers are looking for.

TEST 1: Testing the Impact of Current Events of Email Response Rates.

We set up a simple test with two emails, both of which were written to drive click-throughs to a site and convert leads into sales.

In email A we wrote the sales text within the context of an emotionally charged news story that was making headlines at the time.

In email B we wrote the email without specific mention of the event, but still alluded to "recent events in the news."

The essential difference between the two emails is that one mentioned the event by name, and the other didn't.

We tested our messaging to more than opt-in 337,466 email addresses.
We compiled the results after 12 days, although some clicks continue to trickle in.

Here are the results of the test after the first 12 days:

What You Need To UNDERSTAND: Email A (specifically mentioning the news story and events surrounding it) significantly outperformed Email B. CTR increased by 16.5% and overall conversion (email to sale) increased by 43.4%.

The email that disclosed the specifics of this news piece generated 53 more orders (an increase of 43.4%) than the email that only alluded to the events surrounding the story without mentioning specifics.

TEST 2: Testing a Specific Problem

In our second test, we believed that customers visiting our test site with an 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution monitor were not finding the relevant sales language for the primary site product unless they scrolled down that page.

We set up an A/B/C split to test this hypothesis:

Page A was the original page.
Page B featured slightly shortened data and used a "click here" anchor text to take visitors down the page. This page showed the order process on a 1024x768 resolution monitor and on an 800x600 resolution monitor it displayed the offer copy for the primary product.
Page C was a radical redesign in which the order process was partially viewable on 800x600 and higher. It used two columns to make more information available "above the fold."

Here are the results of our testing:

What You Need To UNDERSTAND: Page B outperformed the original page by 15.57%. Page C was a dismal failure.

In a recent web clinic, we surveyed our audience as to which of these pages would perform the best. They overwhelmingly chose Page C, showing that what seems "intuitive" to most marketers is not always revealed as the best page after testing.

In this test, our hypothesis about important sales language appearing higher on the page proved correct. However, the two-column approach of Page C was ineffective.

TEST 3: Challenging Assumptions by Testing the "Obvious" and Learning from the Results

In this test we created two versions of a simple sales page online. Each page was approximately two screens in length and asked the reader to complete a short form in order to receive a free informational product.

In version A we added some personal elements to the page, including a photo of the writer, a personal introduction and a signature. In other words, we created a personal "sales letter" on the web page.

In version B the sales copy was largely the same, but without the personal elements: no photo, no salutation, and no signature.

Which version won? Conventional wisdom online suggested to us that the personal version would be the winner. Here are the results of our testing:

What You Need To UNDERSTAND: Version B outperformed Version A by 15.3%.

In this case, our expectation that the personalized copy would perform better was simply not met.

There are two points to consider here:

First, if we had never tested these pages, we would have left money on the table by assuming the personal version would do better.

Second, this was only one test. What if we had taken the personal version and doubled the length of the copy as well, adding more of an individual sales pitch? What if we had changed the photo in some way, or repositioned it on the page?

KEY POINT: Each test provides answers. But each test should also stimulate further thought and additional rounds of testing to learn more.

A/B Split Testing Protocol:

Whether you have conducted any A/B split testing before or not, the following steps may help you formalize a regular testing program, and help you improve your results.

Test Protocol for A/B Split Testing for Landing Pages:

Develop Your Capabilities and Select the Right Tools
A/B split testing tools vary from simple CGI scripts to sophisticated software applications. You will find a list of services in the Literature Review at the end of this report.

Even without sophisticated A/B testing capability, sequential testing offers you an opportunity to learn many insights about your pages. For more on sequential testing, see the Concluding Comments, below.
Identify Your Established Control Page
Your control page will be the page against which you test all subsequent optimization efforts. If you are just getting started with A/B testing, your control page will be your current landing page before any optimization. When a new page performs better than the existing control page, it then becomes your control page in subsequent testing.
Establish Your Testing Goals and Parameters
What are you trying to accomplish with A/B split testing? Are you after more subscribers, a higher conversion rate, or a greater return on investment on your PPC campaigns? Your goals will determine your testing parameters, which will determine the potential success of your testing efforts.
Determine Your Sufficient Test Interval
This time period should allow you enough time to gather sufficient data to gauge real insight about your A/B tests. Identify the number of unique visitors and/or conversions needed to establish good data and then determine how long it will take you to generate this traffic. This number will vary from business to business, but should give you enough data to confidently declare a "winner."
Create 1-3 Radical Redesigns
KEY POINT: These pages are not subtle optimizations changing only one or two elements on the page, but are wholly different pages representing a radically different approach.
Evaluate These Redesigns in A/B Split Tests
Test these alternate landing pages against the control page. Ideally, each page will be tested against every other page, but if that is impractical, test two pages at a time and keep the best as your control for subsequent testing.
Based on Results, Determine Your True Control Page
The radical redesign method will be more likely to generate a quantum leap in improved conversion rate than optimizing a mediocre page with little potential. Once you have identified the best general approach, you are now ready to optimize individual elements on the page.
Optimize with Traditional Variable-Specific A/B Testing Variables to test:
Headline
Call to Action
Page Copy
Graphics
Color
Configuration of Page Elements
Etc.

Concluding Comments:

There are a few important points to remember about A/B split testing:

Even if you can't set up a true A/B split test (where two versions of a page are being displayed one after another to alternate visitors to your site), it is very easy to create a sequential A/B split test.
KEY POINT: A sequential test is when you show one version of a page for a certain period, like two days or a week, and then show another version for the following two days or a week. The results may be a little less reliable, but can still yield valuable information and trends.
Testing gives you the opportunity to maximize conversion rates, solve problems, and challenge assumptions. And keep in mind that you have opportunities beyond testing small changes to a page.
You can also challenge an existing page by designing and writing a radically different version, where almost everything is different. In fact, it is through these dramatically changed approaches that you are most likely to achieve breakthrough improvements.
Testing provides companies with an invaluable means to demonstrate to company heads and management the hard figures behind any suggested changes or improvements.
Persuading management on the basis of subjective expertise alone is a tough road to follow. But if you have hard test results on your side, the persuasion process becomes much easier.
Use of consistent testing will increase the knowledge base of your web group or company significantly. You will learn more, and soon be able to determine a set of optimized practices that work best for your particular business.
The absence of rigorous testing leaves you in the dark, depending on guesswork alone when creating your pages.
Establish a testing protocol for your web sites and emails. In the section above we have outlined a protocol to get you started. In addition, the following document will provide a template for A/B testing that will help guide the experimentation process.

My process is pretty straightforward – find keywords that have a reasonable amount of traffic but low competition, build a basic site quickly around that keyword and then move onto the next. It’s this strategy that enables me to rank quickly on the first page of Google but still have enough traffic for the potential to make money. On average i probably only spend 1-2 hours per site depending on how much content is available for that keyword. The reason i’m able to build these sites so quickly and efficiently is that everything i do, i do in bulk.

Do it in Bulk.

My strategy of building lots of small micro-niche sites can become a real time suck if you do everything one by one. This time is a little different because i tried to find a keyword specifically for this challenge but in general i will do 1-2 sessions of “porn research” per month where i search around the net for new girls or new niche keywords that i might want to look into. I then spend a similar amount of time doing keyword research in to find out which terms might fit the criteria of traffic vs competition. Once i have my final list of sites i buy all the domains and do all the wordpress setup together (using a standard default template i’ve setup). I then gather all of the content i need for the sites in another session and then the final session i publish it all to each site. If i was doing all of these things one by one i might spend 5-6 hours (or more) per site, by doing it all in bulk i’m able to get that down to 1-2 hours.

Keyword Research.

How do you decide which keywords fit the criteria of reasonable traffic, low competition? As i mentioned above i use a product called to do all my keyword research, there are several keyword research tools around and you can even use the free tool from Google but i find Market Samurai makes the process a whole lot faster and easier for me. It’s how i’m able to research large amounts of keywords in 30 minutes as opposed to several hours or even days. Below is a quick introductory video of Market Samurai where i show you how i researched the keyword for this challenge.

What is my keyword?

So the keyword i’ll be targeting is x-art caprice. You may know Caprice from her site Little Caprice, which has been online for a few years now. I would say Little Caprice is actually a sub-niche, under the umbrella niche of teen, the reason i would class my keyword as micro-niche is that i’ll only be promoting one aspect of Caprice, that being her content on X-Art. Why wouldn’t I promote all of her content and sponsors? Well I think this type of content is quite different than the content on Little Caprice, and the kind of surfer that would be looking for Little Caprice is quite possibly a different type of surfer than one who is searching for Caprice on X-art. This is another part of my strategy and why i call these types of sites micro-niche – I target very specific keywords and build my site solely around that keyword so that the surfer that clicks through to my site finds exactly what he’s looking for.

If you don’t know X-Art it is a very high quality site that focuses more on porn as an erotic art, the production values are a lot higher than your average porn site and the models are generally very beautiful girls.

Like i said the competition for x-art caprice is quite a lot stronger than i would usually target but i wanted to make things interesting and challenging. Pretty much all of Caprice’s x-art content is available in full on the tubes, torrents, and file-locker sites, all of which shows up on the first page of google. So that is my competition. All to prove that it is indeed possible to make money from micro-niche sites (and porn in general) even when the content is available for free.

Again, thanks to MARKET SAMU i was able to find a keyword quickly with a decent amount of search traffic and competition that i’m pretty confident i can beat. You don’t need it to find these keywords but it definitely speeds things up a lot.

Due to my limited time i need to work smarter, not harder and so i look for ways to do things that will deliver the best results in the least amount of time. This is not about being lazy or expecting to make lots of money without any work, i do a lot of work, but i do it in a focused way that enables me to get the most value out of my time. I s etup procedures, do things in bulk, test a lot, and re-invest money on toolsthat will enable me to work faster and more efficiently. I have also recently started outsourcing work to the Philippines to enable me to leverage the money i’ve earned so far to work for me by getting a lot more work done in the little time i have available. Also please note that this is a “Micro-Niche Blog Challenge” meaning that the techniques and strategies will be different if you’re building a niche or authority site with more competition.

So, with that out of the way on to this week’s topic…

Backlinks, And Why You Don’t Need Them.

As i mentioned briefly in my last article my take on back links is that you don’t really need them to rank well for a micro-niche site or possibly any site given time, this is becoming increasingly evident with the direction Google is heading with it’s Panda updates. I believe that on site factors such as strong on site optimisation, design, user experience and visitor engagement stats such as bounce rate, time on site, page views etc are becoming much more important than back links. Now, before you get all uppity and start telling me that i’m crazy and that back links are the most important aspect of getting a site ranking highly, sure, they absolutely are important and i’m not disagreeing with that, they are a hugely important factor in getting a site to rank but you need to look at the overall ROI (Return On Investment) and decide if spending 5 hours building links to a site is going to generate that much extra income, and by “Investment” i mean either in time if you’re doing the work yourself, or monetarily if you’re hiring someone to do that work for you.

This becomes even more relevant when building a micro-niche site, or network of micro-niche sites like i’m doing. For my strategy of building lots of micro-niche blogs quickly and efficiently it really doesn’t make sense to spend a whole lot of time building links if i can climb up the Google rankings without them. I typically only spend around 30 minutes to 1 hour per site, which includes the keyword research, site setup, gathering and preparing content, and adding content. At a minimum i want this site over the course of 12 months to return it’s initial hard costs such as the domain name and hosting as well as an amount for my time which i value at roughly $60 per hour, so i’m looking at around $80 total on average. Now add to that if i spend 5 hours building links for that site, suddenly i’ll now need that site to return over $380 on average. Of course i have a few sites that are making that kind of money (my highest earning micro-niche site has earned over $800 this year so far) but as an average across all my sites – impossible. Now take into account the fact that almost all of my sites have had no back linking whatsoever done and the vast majority are either at #1 or at least on the first page of Google – why would i waste my time building links when i know those sites will get there anyway, they might take a little bit longer but will spending that time building links give me a worthwhile ROI, i don’t think so. If you’re building a niche or even sub-niche site and trying to rank for more popular keywords you will absolutely need to spend time building links but the chance of getting a big return on that is greatly increased as the traffic and potential income is much greater.

So i shouldn’t build any links?

Not necessarily, what i tend to do is put the site up and leave it for 6-8 weeks, this is enough time for Google to index your content and start to see where it fits in the whole scheme of the web. It can also be dangerous to build links at this early stage as lots of links pointing to a new site can look a little suspicious to Google and you may find it harder to move up in the rankings or even worse you might find yourself in the Google Sandbox. I have a large number of sites that have gotten to the first page and many have even been at #1 or #2 by this point, some after just a couple of weeks – with zero backlinks. After that time and only after that time if i’m not seeing significant results i will start to build some links, and only if i think that the ROI is worthwhile, for example if i’ve already made a couple of sales or i’m seeing significant traffic while still on the 2nd or 3rd page of Google. In the case of my site for this challenge things are moving a little slower than i’d like but the past month has seen some major tweaking to the Google algorithm with the Panda 2.5 update so i’m not worrying to much about it however my traffic and click through results have shown me enough that it’s worth spending a little time doing some linking. Again, it’s all about the ROI so i won’t be spending a lot of time on this, maybe 5-10 minutes and then i’ll monitor the results for a few weeks before doing anything else.

If you must build links, how do you build links?

I’ve tried several different ways to build links and to be honest i’m still not sure what does and doesn’t work, i’ve seen great results from one method for a site that has completely bombed on another site and vice versa.Testing different link building strategies can be a difficult thing to track which is why i generally test something on just one site first and if there are positive results i’ll roll it out to 3-5 sites, if those sites also perform well then i’ll use it on other sites going forward or on sites that are struggling or maybe even on my entire network. I also think that while some links may be worth less in Google’s eyes i don’t think there is too much chance of being penalised for something, the link might just not be worth anything. A lot of people talk about being penalised for bad links but if that was the case you could just buy a whole bunch of spam links and point them at your competitors. I’ll be doing more in-depth articles on these different methods in the future with specific case studies but for now here are a few of the methods i’ve tried and what i think about them.

Social Networks

There is a bit of a myth about what social networks will accept in terms of adult and what i’ve found is that if you stick somewhat loosely within their rules you’ll be fine, which basically means no overtly explicit content. Most social networks will also include in their TOS that you can’t link out to sites that contain adult content but i’ve found that this is a fairly lax and not heavily enforced rule, especially if you make sure to flag your page as being for adults only. If we talk about Facebook as obviously that is the biggest social network by far my experience has been pretty good. It’s debatable how much if any link juice is passed by Facebook but even if it’s zero i still think using Facebook is worthwhile. You can make a fan page for a model or niche which might include a few non-explicit photos, maybe a few small details about the model or niche and give a link back to your site. It’s quite amazing that people will actually “like” a page that is clearly about pornography and the amount of likes some of my pages have gotten and the traffic i get from them is quite staggering, with a lot of my sites Facebook is actually in the top 3 traffic sources behind Google and direct visits, and in a lot of cases it well and truly beats traffic from Yahoo and Bing. There are obviously lots of smaller social networks but i really don’t think they are worth the time or effort, again it all comes down to the ROI, you will get much more out of spending a couple of minutes to set up a Facebook page than you would spending hours putting up links on a hundred different sites. I have yet to try anything with Google+ or Twitter but it’s something i might look into soon. It’s also worth mentioning that you should setup different user accounts so if one of them does get banned you won’t lose everything, as the saying goes don’t keep all your eggs in one basket!

Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is a great way to get a lot of diverse links but it’s not particularly quick or easy and i generally find it incredibly boring and not worth the time. You can outsource this work but again i don’t think it’s worth the money for a micro-niche site. However i have been testing out a new service called SocialAdrwhich allows you to set up accounts at multiple social bookmarking sites at once and by mass bookmarking other peoples sites you will get your site mass bookmarked in return. It’s quick and easy and they have a free account that will get you a certain amount of credits per day and requires a small amount of manual work, but they also have paid accounts that will get things done automatically. I’ve had mixed results with this and have seen some sites get great boosts, but for others it hasn’t done anything or has been a short boost just for a few days or a week. I haven’t tried the paid account though i’ve just been doing some small tests with the free account but i might test out the paid account soon. I’ll give a full report once i have.

Linkwheels

Linkwheels can take a LOT of time and effort and i don’t recommend them for micro-niche sites. I’m not going to go into detail here about what a link wheel is or how to build one but there is a great video here that does a decent job of explaining it. I’ve done a few tests mostly through outsourcing at oDesk and again have had mixed results with some sites getting a great boost and others having no effect. I’m still quite new to this type of link building though so i’ll continue to do some tests and may have some more detailed information about it in the future.

Link Trades

This is what most adult webmasters mean when they talk about link building but i find it to be quite old school and not particularly useful. The basic idea is that you find a site in your niche and trade a link with it, meaning that they put a link to your site on theirs and in return you put a link on your site to theirs. This is called a reciprocal link but there are different types of trades such as A-B-C and A-B-C-D where site 1 links to site site 2, site 2 links to site 3, and site 3 links back to site 1 etc. This is what i was talking about in my last articlewhen i mentioned the typical adult site that has a hundred links in their sidebar. To me these are low value links coming to your site while you’re leaking juice to another persons site, not to mention sending traffic to another persons site. Link trading can also take a lot of time, you need to find sites to link with, contact the webmaster, add the links, manage the links etc and i think the ROI is incredibly low, especially for a micro-niche site.

There are several services such as Linkspun, and others that make the setting up of A-B-C and A-B-C-D trades much easier. You can add your sites and when you trade a link from site 1 with someone instead of just linking back to site 1 they will link back to site 3, or 5, or 10 and then others will link to their sites and vice versa. I have used Linkspun but again i find the ROI is incredibly low, it still takes time to find suitable sites to trade with, you still have to setup the links and you will be constantly bombarded with offers to trade with low-quality spammy sites on subdomains or that are not even close to being related to your niche. And this is my #1 tip for trading links, make sure you only trade with other sites that match your niche.

Directories

Directories, hmm, where to start. I don’t think i’ll bother. Directories were probably a great source of traffic and link juice in 2001, but in 2011 i really don’t think they have any value whatsoever. Your mileage may vary.

Buying Links

While buying links is technically illegal in the eyes of Google and will get you banished from their results if you are caught, it is an option. The benefits of buying links is that you don’t need to link out to anyone else from your site meaning you keep that link juice and traffic, however the downsides are of course being banned, and the prohibitive cost. It might be worth it if you’re trying to rank for a competitive term in a popular niche that will bring you thousands upon thousands of visitors but for a micro-niche blog where you’re trying to make $80 per site over the course of a year, buying links will typically not give you a good ROI, especially if you can get that site to #1 with no backlinks at all.

Using your own network

This final option is one i’ve just started testing in the last few weeks. The guys at Medium Pimpin who run a rather large Pornstar Blog Network of over 600 sites defy all standard practices and link their entire network together with reciprocal links, meaning that every single site on their network links to every other site on their network. Up until recently all of my sites were setup like my x-art caprice site with no outgoing links at all on the homepage. I decided to test out the Medium Pimpin method and link a few of my sites together and the results were quite amazing. Not only did some of my struggling sites receive a little boost in their rankings, but the traffic flowing between my network was what impressed me the most. Instead of those sidebar links going to another persons site they were going to my own sites AND some of my bigger sites were now appearing in the top 2 or 3 of referring sites. I started this test between around 5 sites and the results were great so i decided to roll it out across my entire network… well, as i mentioned earlier the last month has seen some significant updates to Google’s algorithm with the new Panda updates so it probably wasn’t the best time to test this as some of the results are no doubt being affected by these Google changes so my conclusions are definitely not concrete but i did see mixed results the second time around. Several sites that have ranked #1 continuously for several months on end dropped down to #3 or #4 and a couple even dropped even more dramatically. However at the same time several sites that have been struggling a little bit have been given a boost so i’m kind of thinking that overall it hasn’t been too bad, and it’spossibly just that some of the lower ranked sites have stolen a little power from the higher ranked sites and vice versa, or it could just be Panda reaking havoc? I’ll have to leave it a little longer and see what happens, the traffic flowing between the sites though has continued to amaze me.

NI - keep working hard

I only managed to work around 3 hours this month (most of which was trying to wrangle Google Analytics) and didn’t reach any of my goals which was pretty disappointing. I did however still make a decent amount of money so i’m reasonably happy to see that my income from porn is becoming relatively passive. Read on for the results.

Niche Blogs

The posts that i had scheduled last month are still trickling out every few days for one of my niche sites.

Micro-Niche Blogs

I had all of my sites updated with new posts, this required around 15 minutes of work from me and the rest was all done by my VAs. I didn’t get any new sites up in November (but i have managed to get 26 new sites up in the first week of December). These sites again made up the bulk of my income.

My micro-niche blogs were the stars again this month and will most likely continue to be as i grow my network. Disappointing to not reach $500 again but if you told me at the start of this year i’d be making $500 a month from porn i would have laughed, and considering i’ve only been working a few hours a week on this i’m pretty happy overall. Hopefully i can ramp up my outsourcing and start to grow my income even quicker. It was great to make my first sale for my 90 Day Challenge site as well.

Things I Learned.

Again, outsourcing is amazing and if you’re not already doing it you’re crazy! However i really found out this month that i’m the bottleneck, it only takes me a few minutes to setup someone to do 10 hours of work but if i don’t do that few minutes then nothing will get done, i wasted a lot of time this month where i could have had people working for me but i just didn’t get around to doing the setup. I’m planning in time to remove myself even from the setup but for the meantime i just need to make sure that my VAs always have something to be working on. It’s not costing me money as i only hire them on an hourly basis but it’s definitely cost me time.

I’ll have my final report for my 90 Day Challenge up within the next few days hopefully, it doesn’t look like i’ll make it to #1 but it is making a late charge (see below) and the traffic and the fact i’ve already made a sale has been more than encouraging.

I had my VAs make 50 new posts on one of my new niche blogs, well its kind of a “sub-niche” blog. These posts are setup to post 1 every 3 days over the next couple of months and it’s great to see i already made 1 sale from this site.

Micro-Niche Blogs

Again this was my main focus as i build my network of micro-niche blogs. I didn’t launch any new ones in October as i wanted to make sure i had all my systems properly set before i start more new sites as my VAs will be doing all of the work setting up them up from now on. I did have them update all of my existing micro-niche blogs though. I also added opt-in mailing list forms to the majority of these sites, i think this will be worthwhile in the long run.

I haven’t touched this in probably over 7 months but surprisingly it made a couple of sales this month. It got me interested again so i had a little play around with it and i’m thinking now that i’ve got VAs to do the work for me i might look into making a little network of TGPs rather than just 1. This is fairly easy to do as you can just take the template, change a couple things and bam, you’ve got a new TGP.

Tube and MGP

Didn’t work on these in October but I did find a new plugin called WPXtube which turns a WordPress site into a fake tube. I might try to make a few of these in the coming months.

Overall a pretty decent month again in terms of total income, disappointing i didn’t break $500 but i did break $3000 for the year.

However it was a little strange in how it played out.

I use predominantly ccbill sponsors and i do actually recommend this for newbies as most sponsors have a minimum payout of at least $100, if you spread yourself across a lot of sponsors it can be hard to get to that first payout and can be discouraging. By having all your eggs in the ccbill basket you will reach the payout quicker and get your first check in the mail which can be a great motivator to push on. Now i’ve read a lot of threads on forums about ccbill and the issues people have with it but i’ve never really experienced anything strange with it (aside from it’s 90’s interface ).

After the first week of October i had already made a few sales and a bunch of rebills, i was on track to make around $700, and then… it seemed like someone turned the tap off. My traffic was the same, my clicks to sponsors were the same, but no sales, and even more strangely, fewer rebills. This went on for almost the entire month and at the beginning of the last week my estimated earnings were down to around $200. And then… it started flowing again and i made over $200 in the last week! Strange! This has obviously got me thinking that now i’m making a $500 minimum ccbill payout almost monthly i might be wise to add a few new non-ccbill sponsors into the mix and diversify my income. yo pienso que mejor una red para un sponsor otra para otro sponsor y así tener mas control

I thought it might be a good idea to put in here the per site average as well as another way of tracking my sites performance and progress. I’ll be doing this based on the number of active sites i had at the start of the month. For example sites that i started in October won’t be included in the total until the November report as that will be their first full month. At the start of October i had 58 active sites which means a per site average of $8.40. The interesting thing is i’ve been doing a little bit of research lately about mainstream online and a lot of the Adsense people that make these small niche Adsense sites are saying they’re happy for a site to average $3-$5 a month, these are people with huge networks of hundreds of sites. I’m sure there are people making more and there are plenty of other ways besides Adsense to make money online but i think this is a good indication of the value of building hundreds of these little micro-niche porn sites. Plus i’d rather look at porn than write about dog training or acne cream and i’m sure it takes a lot more work and/or money to build one of those sites as you need to write or buy content for them.

Les choses que j'ai apprises.

Eh bien la chose la plus importante que j'ai appris ce mois-ci était de savoir comment il est grand d'externaliser. Yep, c'est vrai, je me dis que je fais assez d'argent à partir de ce maintenant pour commencer à utiliser mon temps et d'argent pour en faire plus. J'ai été signé à oDesk pendant quelques moismaintenant et j'ai eu un couple de petites tâches effectuées, mais j'ai vraimentmis à l'épreuve ce mois-ci, l'embauche de 3 personnes pour un total d'environ 15 heures - et il ne coûte que moi autour de 30 $. Je vais essayer d'écrire un poste à plein à ce sujet bientôt, mais j'ai réussi à obtenir 3 des gens formidables à fairequelques-unes des tâches les plus banales comme le téléchargement de fichierset de renommage, annonce à WordPress et à faire quelques tests backlinking.Me laissant se concentrer sur la stratégie globale, les essais, la conversion, etcGlobalement, il a été une grande expérience et quelque chose que je vais fairebeaucoup plus de cours des prochains mois. Si j'apprécie mon temps à environ 60 $ par heure, je peux trouver quelqu'un dans les Philippines pour travailler 25-30 heures pour cela et avec quelques bonnes instructions Ils sont capables de travailler aussi vite que moi, ce qui signifie que j'ai tourné mon 1 heure en 25.

Objectifs pour Octobre.

Je passerai un peu de temps ce mois-ci peaufiner mes stratégies d'externalisation et de l'organisation un peu plus de cela. Je vais probablementpasser du temps un peu plus sur mon site principal créneau de construire cela etje vais aussi faire de la recherche mot-clé un peu plus pour mon prochain lot de sites. Et comme d'habitude je vais également être mise à jour tous les sites existants mes.

Mon objectif pour le revenu en Octobre est de briser 500 $.

Un error frecuente de muchos emprendedores de internet es creer que el lanzamiento de su primer producto es el pasaporte hacia la fortuna. Dedican tanta energia a lanzar su eBook, programa o curso, convencidos de que les hará ricos, que no son conscientes de que los verdaderos beneficios se producen en el back-end.

El front-end es una herramienta de generación de leads - no necesariamente un punto de generación de beneficios.

Esto no es una regla rígida, hay compañias que realizan beneficios procedentes exclusivamente del front-end, pero en la mayoría de los casos añadir un back-end tiene como resultado el que los beneficios se disparen.

Marketing Dinámico

La función del front-end es la de capturar la atención y atraer gente al embudo de ventas. Al existir muchas formas de captar tráfico online nunca deberíamos quedarnos sin opciones para generar leads.

La clave está en conocer las cifras. En cuanto se sabe el valor que un lead representa para nuestro negocio, y esto solo se puede saber cuando tenemos un back-end ajustado y en funcionamiento, entonces podemos trabajar en desarrollar las herramientas de marketing del front-end. Este es un proceso que nunca debe detenerse. Mientras existan nuevos métodos para realizar marketing se deben estar probando, viendo cuales generan el tráfico más cualificado y realizar ajustes al proceso hasta que los ratios de conversión se disparen.

Obviamente el tamaño de la organización determina cuanto se puede hacer, debido fundamentalmente a que los recursos son limitados. Hay que determinar cual es la mejor solución que funciona bien, la cual podría ser escribir y publicar artículos gratuitos o eBooks, utilizar afiliados, realizar teleseminarios, o fomentar referencias boca a boca mediante marketing viral, publicar artículos en un blog o cualquier combinación de estas y otras herramientas, tanto on-line como off-line.

El front-end ayuda a cualificar a los clientes potenciales y a convencerles de que merece la pena establecer relaciones con nuestro negocio. Esa relación se hace mas fuerte a medida que los clientes consumen más de la información gratuita que ofrecemos, compran productos front-end y aprenden a confiar y apreciar lo que proporcionamos. A partir de ahí, entran en el back-end donde se realizarán ventas con elevados margenes a los clientes hiper-receptivos.

A/B SPLIT TESTING

En términos de marketing directo, uno de los test analíticos, o de estadísticas, que más nos interesa es lo que se conoce como A/B Split Testing. Eso, ¿qué quiere decir en términos normales? Básicamente, tú estás tratando de medir una variable. Entonces, por ejemplo, tú tienes una carta de ventas A, y quieres comparar la efectividad de esa carta de ventas A versus una carta de ventas B. La única diferencia entre la carta de ventas A y la carta de ventas B, es una y solamente una variable. O sea, todo el resto sigue siendo constante menos la variable que tú quieres medir. El caso típico es que tú quieras medir la efectividad del titular de la carta de venta A versus el titular de la carta de ventas B.

Entonces, si tú envías 500 visitantes a la carta de ventas A y llevas 500 visitantes a la carta de ventas B, y la carta de ventas A te produce más ventas, o más acciones, porque realmente no necesariamente tiene que ser una venta sino que puede ser que le estés pidiendo a la gente que te llame a la oficina, que concierte una cita o que llene un formulario o que se suscriba a tu boletín o que compre un producto o un servicio, entonces, tú envías 500 visitas a la A y 500 visitas a la B. Una de las dos va a tener mejor desempeño que la otra. Entonces, esa es la que vas a dejar en vivo para tu publicidad, para tus labores de marketing.

Y ahora, ya que sabes que la B no funcionó tan bien con respecto a la A, vas a tratar de crear una C, tratando de ponerla a competir con la número A. Y haces lo mismo, determinada cantidad de tráfico a la A y determinado trafico a la C. Y en este caso, te vas a dar cuenta que por ejemplo, la C es más efectiva que la A. Entonces, descartas la A, dejas la C, y vas y creas una D para mejorar los resultados de conversión.

Entonces, a eso se le conoce como Split Testing. Lo usual es hacerlo A, B, pero también lo puedes hacer en simultáneo, A, B y C. Y así es como tú puedes testear el titular, o puede que lo otro que estés tratando de testear sea la oferta, el precio, la garantía.

Lo que tienes que hacer es simplemente medir una variable a la vez y ver cómo esa variable afecta o no afecta a los porcentajes de conversión, y basándote en esas estadísticas, puedes tomar las decisiones.

Y puedes seguir así, un proceso de mejora continua, tratando de crear nuevas variables para medir con control. Eso es todo lo que hay detrás del Split Testing, y es una de las herramientas más poderosas que te van a dar datos.

Porque vuelvo y lo digo ya so pena de ser cansón, si uno no se acostumbra a medir, a obtener este tipo de datos, pues te va a quedar muy difícil gestionar tu empresa. Entonces, sin datos no puedes gestionar; si no puedes gestionar tu empresa, no la puedes hacer crecer. Y si no tienes parámetros para hacer crecer tu empresa, pues básicamente estás conduciendo tu negocio a ciegas y no vas a saber qué es lo que realmente es efectivo y que es lo que no es efectivo, y no vas a saber dónde concentrar tus esfuerzos de marketing correctamente.

De tal manera, que si algo tenemos que aprender todas las personas que nos dedicamos al marketing a través del internet, o tener un negocio en internet, es que tenemos que tener estos datos de gestión. Y estos datos se obtienen a partir de este tipo de test y a partir de este tipo de medidas que lo hacen muy, muy poderosos.

Ahora, ¿esto quiere decir que si soy nuevo en el marketing por internet no puedo tener éxito sin hacer este tipo de test? No. Lo importante es que empiecen.

Empiecen, y luego se van a dar cuenta de que existen todas estas herramientas, usualmente gratuitas, que me van a permitir gestionar mejor mi negocio. Pero no esperemos a tener todo un sistema de tracking y de estadísticas y de gestión de datos antes de empezar un negocio por internet, porque si no, les ocurre lo que le ocurre a más de una persona, que no empiezan hasta que no tengan todo 100% perfecto.
