What ever has to be fixed, I will be fixing it.

Today's task is repairing the leak from my son's cooling system. His car has been sitting in the yard for a year now. Instead of saving money to get it fixed he has been spending his money on food and accessories. Then he looks to Supermom to come in and save him from being stuck at home because he has no way to get places.

Single parenting means you don't have the extra income to splurge on certain things like taking a car to the shop for minor repairs which may cost in the hundreds. The first thing you have to do is assess the problem to see if it can be repaired. The best thing to do is research the problem on the net. I love Youtube! I can always find the problem on Youtube.

We went out to the car and poured water in the radiator to watch where the leak was coming from under the hood. There was a hose which was cracked down the side and water was SHOOTING out of the hose. Now to find out which hose it is.

Google is a great tool for research. I googled some diagrams to assess the different hoses connected to the cooling system. The one that was leaking was a heater core hose. There two hoses for the heater core and depending on the care there are several shapes it can have for replacement parts. I took it off and sent my son to the nearest shop. O'Reily's and Autozone are both near the house but O'Reily's has great customer service, so it was an easy choice. Previously, I went up there and purchased a lower radiator hose and the lady behind the counter told me to bring it back if it were the wrong hose. No extra money to spend there and the new part was cheaper so I save $6 in the end. The video below helped me remove the hose for replacement.
People here CAN NOT drive. The traffic here is horrible. I miss leaving right off of 696 and jumping on the freeway doing like 75mph and no slowing down to let me in. People here slow down to an almost complete stop. It reminds me of the traffic on Southfield freeway during rush hour but imagine that on ALL of the freeways.

Driving down here is so dreadful! My mom just moved back to Michigan. The whole time she was here she refused to drive because of the way other people here drive. They don't use blinkers. I can't tell you the last time I saw someone use their blinker to get into the lane next to them. Here... NOT. They just jump in front of you with no real warning. Then on top of that people that this happens to smash on their brakes and come to a complete stop. Additional traffic for everyone.

The other day I saw someone stop all of the traffic on the street to cross two lanes in order to turn left. That means there was three lanes in one direction. They were in the far right lane trying to make a left turn. Instead of going down the adjacent street and turning left they raced across. They went across two lanes to get to the left turn lane and turn left.

Why am I mad today? What caused this post? I was on my way to work. It is well over 100 degrees outside every day here. I hate using the A/C because it uses extra gas and gas is ridiculously priced. I was behind a small foreign car... ahem... yeah... Then the car comes to almost a complete stop. The precedes to SLOWLY turn into the driveway of a shopping center. All of the cars behind it, me included, came to a complete stop in the road. Then they only pulled halfway in so they could turn left which means they were still sticking out into the middle of the street. UH... YOU CAN JUST GO STRAIGHT AND COME BACK!

Yeah, I know the road rage is bad but what can I say.

Have you ever had really bad road rage?
International Money Pile in Cash and Coins (Photo credit: epSos.de)

Are you going back to school? Everyone needs to have some sort of specialization in order to exist in this horrible economy. If you want to live comfortably you have to corner the market in whatever you are good at. The problem is determining what you are good at.

Everyone doesn't have the money to go to college just to explore the possibilities of what college has to offer. College costs a lot of money! The cost per year has gone up at least $10k since I started college. When I started college I was on a mission to change the world one person at a time. I never thought about the time going by so fast or the economy going downhill the way it has.

My son is going to college next year. Eeeekk! #1 - I realize how old I am. *sigh* #2 - I don't know what I'm going to do about these bill I'm going to inherit with an incoming college freshmen.

Don't let that deter YOU from going to college. Everyone should have something to fall back on. When choosing what you are going to do you need to be careful of where you go also. Where you attend school DOES play a role in the hiring process. Make sure you choose a school that is reputable for the field you are going into.

Community colleges are a great place to get a certificate. Sometimes all you need is a certificate! That's only a couple of classes and that will get you in the door. Specialize in something so you will have something over the next man. Going to a community college helps because the credits transfer virtually everywhere and they are 1/4 of the price with all of the financial aid.

Have you looked at a community college catalog lately. You can become virtually anything for dirt cheap. I want to learn to speak Spanish so I can check the "Fluent in language other than English" box. That will get you extra money on a job.

What are you going to corner the market in? What is your specialty and how are you going to make money doing it?
I've learned that men are a lot more simplistic with reasoning than women lead them to be.

Ladies, we make things a lot more complex with our reasoning. We think of what will happen if... Men don't think that that the way we do. They think of things in the moment and the solution for the moment most of the time. A lot of women meet a man and begin to imagine what their child would look like based on his looks. If he doesn't have the traits we want our child to have we move on, regardless of scientific probability.

Ok... So guys here is my question. When you meet a girl, do you form her place in your life upon meeting her? Does that mean that she will never be able to move up or down in her role?

I was talking to a guy who told me that every woman in his life has a place or purpose. Some women he meets he knows that she will only be there for sex and nothing more. Then there are women he feels he would start a real relationship with. After speaking with several other men (and some women), I'm wondering if this is a common trend among men. I'm just asking the men though. We all know women do this. It's one of those things. We know within the first five minutes whether we would give you a chance (most of the time).

Seeing how Kanye made the comment that Amber Rose is not someone you take home to mama then turns around and gets with Kim Kardashian with circling about popping the question ... I am really curious about your responses.
Hey people! I say people because most of my readers are men.

I spend the majority of my time talking to men about problems. I think a lot of the problems deal with relationships. I'm good at explaining the why's to how women think in a way men can understand. It's easy when it's not you! I don't know why men think to ask me the answer to their problems but they do. I've always been the person a lot of men come to when they don't understand what to do. So here is the problem.

The Breakup (Photo credit: Frank Hamm)

My friend has a baby mama- mother of his child. He has been trying to make it work for the sake of his child but feels it's his time to go. What do you do? How do you break up with the mother of your child without it turning into something horrible?

Here's what he said:

"I think I am about to dump my baby mama!

I’m pretty sure it's going to happen.

Lol

Real talk though.

She is annoying, mean, selfish, cold hearted...

I’m trying to not call her stupid but it's hard.

This is beyond just young. This is "not raised
correctly"

I’m going to talk about how sick my baby mama makes
me and if people feel me.

It's too the point where I’m losing sexual attraction
towards her, not based on her looks, but
on her attitude.

Her attitude makes me not want to touch her.

It's going to hurt her... but I can't take all the
pain so she's happy. It's turning my hair grey... real talk.

I wasn't going to allow her to walk all over me; and
I just stay with her and take it."

Okay people... Let me know what you would say. Then I will tell you what I said...

My friends and family come to me often. If you have one you want me to post I'll post it also.

I am a so sincere when it comes to how people speak. My speech is not the best in word choice but it's up there. I choose my words wisely, when I do speak. The things you say have a direct reflection on how people perceive you in day-to-day life.

When I moved to Texas, I applied at several schools in the area. I figured out quickly that they don't like people who aren't from Texas to teach their kids. On one of my interviews, I was asked if I was familiar with section 8. I think that comment took me off-guard a bit. I didn't see how it would be relevant to my performance as a teacher. My demeanor is always calm so didn't think I could work with kids unless I was "full of energy." They continued to ask me questions about understanding the trials and tribulations of living in low socioeconomic standards or what we call "the hood." Still I say, "What!" That interview really baffled me for months. It wasn't until I began working as an instructor that I understood what happened. My speech is similar to the people where I come from. I come from the Midwest so my students said I sound "like you not from around here." No, I'm not from around here but what does that have to do with the price in China.

Contrary to popular belief, I am from "the hood" and feel comfortable in "hood" environments. I can act like where I'm from but I just choose not to. I do let it come out when I feel it is appropriate. There are instances I feel are appropriate to let it out on people. #thatsreal

When you speak a certain way, people automatically perceive you to be a certain "type" of person. I guess my speech was too strict and terse for their needs. In Michigan, a teacher whose speech is any different thank the professional standard won't get any job any place, especially teaching English.

You have to assess your surroundings. My mom calls this being "all things to all people." Speaking a certain way around certain people will not get you what you want. My speech patterns work well in most spheres because it's flexible. I change my wording depending on the crowd and environment. Typically, I talk the way I want to talk. My supervisor said it's my strength in the classroom.

What does this have to do with you? When you go out places, you have to be aware of your surroundings. If you speak a certain way, you have to be able to be flexible in other places. Cursing is something I never do in “public" because I don't know who is watching. I never use the "N" in public either. I don't think I really use the "N" word period because it makes me cringe. (I say negro though, a safer, negative connotation free alternative.) If you are on an interview, you have to avoid saying many things that may have negative connotation for people. Slang has negative connotation in every professional sphere. Everything you do in an interview is like a presentation. Your presentation is your way to sell yourself to the employer. Who wants to buy something they can't display?

hanging out (Photo credit: jenny818)

How do you fix it? Practice. My kids have normal speech patterns that are different from my own. I force them to perfect their speech. Most black people would say, "they talk white." However, what is white speech any way? They can talk all different types of ways and as long as you understand them does it really matter that they "talk white"? We listen to television all day and listen to people making millions "talking white". This is the closest thing to the language we write in also.

Do you have any interesting stories about the way you speak or other people speak?

loudspeaker, part of kde "crystal" icon theme - redrawn as svg image (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Sitting in my bed at 10:30 pm listening to my beau create instrumentals on the laptop made me think. How many young people today listen to rap music purely for the beat?

While growing up in the 80's and 90's, there were so many songs that had great content and basic beats. Rap music wasn't about "pretend" representation. It was about life, struggle and the stories people told that just happened to rhyme. That's how you know if someone was a good rapper. If they can tell you a story that seems to just happen to rhyme you were envious of their melodic recreation of the event.

Cover of Lauryn Hill

R&B today seems a little watered down also. Lauryn Hill said it best on Superstar when she said "Come on baby light my fire... Everything you drop is so tired... Music is supposed to inspire... How come we ain't gettin' no higher?" The word choice in songs nowadays leaves nothing for the imagination. They come right out and say exactly what it is they're doing. There's no wonder young men today have no game. A real lady -- and I use that term exactly how it's suppose to be intended -- doesn't want a man to come right out and tell her his intentions. Can I get some wooing up in here for a change? Instead of songs crying "Birthday Sex," which played frequently and openly during all listening hours for my underage children to sing, play song that alludes to the message like "Rock Me Tonight."

The music is one of the contributing factors to kids inability to imagine, inference and synthesize anything. They can't create the images in their minds because they no longer have to create images which are readily available. So seeing how it applies to you and creating something out of it in your own mind is out of the question!

I don't let my kids watch anything on TV. My teens are weary of things they hear on the radio. It's not inspiring them to do anything beneficial.

I'm enjoying the repetition of sounds, bass, horns and percussion. No elementary, moral-less, repetitive commentary laid over this beat is fine and dandy to me.

Low-Calorie Protein Smoothie For Workouts

There is nothing like a well groomed man. I am the only girl in my
family. My brothers are my first ideas of what men are suppose to be. My older brother was the man of the house while growing
up and made sure everything in the house was taken care of before he
left. When I was in college my brother came
to stay with me and help me with my kids. He, my other brother and his friend
(who I also consider my brother) showed me how a man should stay groomed no
matter what the grooming it took for them to be comfortable. They would take
hours in the bathroom getting ready to go out looking like a million bucks.

Hair

My oldest brother
cuts everyone hair. He has been
cutting hair since I can remember, literally. He taught me how to cut a man's
hair. Men should have their hair groomed just like women. A man with a nice cut
attracts a woman because it says he cares about his appearance. That doesn't
mean I'm against different styles on men, but it does mean whatever style it
should be presentable. My son has coils (locks) and when he's in between
tightening he keeps it pulled back away from his face. Women spend at least $50 each
time they get their hair done so a man can cough up $15 for his.

Face

I LOVE LOVE LOVE a
man with a clean cut face. Schools in Texas require
boys to be clean-shaven (without any face
hair). It is a little on the extreme but it definitely gets them ready for the
world. A man should keep his face looking nice. The face is the first thing
women look at on a man. A nicely trimmed face could mean the difference between
giving you a look and giving you a number.

Smell

Scented lotions and soaps would be a bit much
but a man should always smell good. Smelling good should not be an options for
anyone. There are so many options. Everyone woman loves to hug her man and
inhale his ambrosial masculine physique.

What do you think?
What is your take on a man being well groomed?

Since I am an instructor, the majority of my daily conversations are with students in a college setting. Today made me think about the choices students make when they plan to attend college.

When you step into the college it is no longer the priority of the teacher to ensure you get the information. My training is in middle and high schools; the ideas of ensuring a student understand are all too well ingrained in my teaching style. These ideas hurt the student in the long run. When you step into my college classroom that idea changes. Most instructors and professors could care less about what is going on in your world.

What does that mean to you?

Step into each classroom with the idea that you are in a game with something to prove. Prove to the teacher that you are the best student in the classroom and can get the most correct answer.

Read the required assignments before coming to class so you can keep up with the conversations. HA! Don't assume a teacher is going to explain everything in the book. NO! Do you know how long it would take a teacher to cover everything in a textbook cover to cover. PLUS! This is not high school! College just gives an overview of the most important aspects of the course as the instructor and college sees fit. Some of the content may not be cover in that particular class but it is expected that you understand to keep up with the conversation.

How important is this $300 that you spent to be in class? If that money is valuable to you then make me work for my money. Read the required readings so you can have relevant questions when you come into class. This called making inference. Apply the material to logic. College is the ultimate leveler. Just because you coasted through high school doesn't mean you can do it in college.

How important is Twitter and Facebook? Get off the internet for the duration of class. Those comments will be there when you get out of class right? YES! Once something is on the internet it is there forever.

If the future of the world is in the hands of people who can't get off the internet we are definitely in trouble elders.
In class discussion yesterday, one of my students commented on the idea of women applying makeup in the car. Makeup is not that serious. I've never put on makeup while I was actually driving. I have applied lipstick when stuck at a red light. My looks aren't so serious that I would apply anything serious while driving down the street. If I need to put on makeup, I get up a lot earlier in the morning.

There are roles in every
society. When those roles begin to change, culture has to change with it. Our
culture has been going through major change since women were liberated from
the
kitchen. Women are free to tell their husband "no" without fear of
what may happen to them. Not too long ago women had very little rights and a
man could get away with murder, literally.

With that being said....
WE still need to be able to do certain things since we are "women."
Before you jump (lol) on my back let me explain. There are still things I
believe a man does and a woman does. A couple of days ago my friend and I sat
around having a discussion about our "significants." They have the
same tendencies which means we are going to react to those tendencies in the
same manner (my best friend is my alter-ego and I am hers). During
the conversation, we agreed that there are certain responsibilities a woman
should hold when raising a child.

English: Woman and child along the seafront, Constanta, Romania. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Whether
you are the mother of that child or not you should "be a mother" to
the child of the man you are with.

I know there are things
baby mamas do that we don't agree with but we can't react on that. You have to
worry about how that is going to affect the child and your relationship.
Moreover, allowing a man to do sub-par for his child doesn't say much
about you as a woman either. It doesn't go well to see a woman control a man so
much that he has no relationship with his child. What will happen when you have
a child with him and you become the "baby mama" who this other chick
doesn't agree with? I've been around the block several times. I'm here to say,
9/10 you don't know what the REAL situation is between the two of them. I know
you love your boo-boo but he is not the same man with her. If you take him away
from his children or don't support the idea of taking care of them-- What type
of woman does that really make you?

You represent US
every time you walk out the front door.

I'm not a good model when
it comes to this (#dontjudgeme). Since moving to Dallas I've noticed a lot of
women have no deep self respect. They will walk out the house in virtually
anything. Pajamas are not something to wear to the grocery store let alone a
club. During my many visits to Facebook, I've seen the latest fashion in club
gear- which disgusts and confuses me. Women are wearing the one-piece fishnet
body suits. *deep breath and exhale* Those are not something you wear outside
of your house let alone be seen by anyone other than the man who you are in an
intimate relationship with. That being said, make sure you are presentable before
you leave the house. I know some days I don't always look my best but I don't
EVER go out of the house in lingerie. As you go farther up the professional
ladder be more careful of what you wear out of the house. You represent your
entire career every time you leave your front door. As a black woman, I know I
represent all black women every time I leave the house. Why do I say
that? Society looks for every chance to say something negative about the way we
behave and look. Don't give them the pleasure. I have a dress that I can throw
on in a whim in my closet. It ensures I look presentable though I may not look
my best. (I think I'll expand on this idea in another post)

Learn how to cook!

I don't care what you
say! A woman that doesn't know how to cook is not much of a woman. Similarly, a
man who doesn't know how to do outside chores or hold down a job isn't much of
a man. The expansion of technology has allowed women to be able to cook. We
don't have to be able to do things as extensively as we once did. There are so
many YouTube videos showing people how to create simple meals. I don't cook
often but I know how. I actually can cook very well but it's so time consuming.
Nothing in me will ever believe it is okay for a woman not to be able to cook
(men should know how to do it also).

Put on eyeliner and
lipstick.

I've grown to love
putting on makeup. I'm a tomboy through and through but I've always worn
eyeliner and lipstick. This is something every woman should at least own. No
one says you have to wear a full face of foundation, concealer, shadow, etc.
While taking business technology senior year we learned that a little makeup
makes a BIG impression. I had this argument with a student recently. When you
go on an interview you are a presentation. The way you look is the first part
of the presentation. Women and men enjoy looking at something pleasing to the
eye. Wearing eyeliner and lipstick gives a slight eye pleasing effect. There
are studies done on the significance in appearance and gaining employment. The
results are AMAZING! So, yea... I wear makeup... and I've moved up in my career
tremendously since I have. I know because of the comments I've received from
men and women.

M.A.C Fluidline Eye-Liner Gel (Photo credit: Breelynne)

There were other things in my list I believe a woman should so but they are suggestions and not really mandatory. So you know it's coming soon ... lol.

I love to read, obviously. Staying current with what is going on in the world is a must because of my lifestyle and career. In order to be an effective teacher you have to know what your students like to do and why. Reading blogs has made my life a lot easier. I can read about everything I will need beauty-wise without laboring through hours of Youtube videos. Keeping up my makeup "looks" would be near impossible if I didn't have something to reference every once and a while, and finding the sales is a full-time job.

After speaking with several people about blogging I realized people didn't know what they had in their pockets/purse. Nowadays you don't have to wait until you get to a computer to read your favorite blog. You can get the blog right on your smartphone. I frequently pull out my smartphone and read blog posts wherever I may be, seeing that I have such a busy life at times.

HTC Aria android 2.2 smart phone review www.liewcf.com/review-htc-aria-android-2-2-6878/ (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I am not a fan of anything Apple so of course I'm going to tell you the Android version. You can download the Google Reader App. This will send all of the blog posts, as they appear, right to your cellphone. Don't worry if you feel behind I just found out about this not too long ago myself.

It is such an convenience for people on the go. The only downfall of having this on your phone is that you have to have internet access on your cellphone also.
With a Blog reading application I can get all of the blogs I regular at my fingertips no matter where I am. That means when I'm waiting in the car for my son to come out of school after band practice I'm usually reading the blogs that have been posted throughout the day.
P1010265 (Photo credit: 150hp)

There is never a time too early to start children reading. When I was in college, the homework was unbearable and there wasn't enough time in a day to do everything. If there was time to do something it had to be something that would be beneficial to the whole family. Reading was a priority for school and home. When my teens were toddler and pre-K, I read my homework to them. They thought it was the best thing ever. Kids could care less what it is that you are reading to them sometimes, it's just the fact that you are reading that sparks their interest.

My son is an avid reader. He knows the better reader you are the easier it is to understand every other subject. My daughter loathes reading with a passion but will read novels every once and a while. She is one of those people who needs someone else to verify how great a novel will be to read it. My best friend recommends novels to me that she's enjoyed. We trade our ideas on what we've read and have great conversations about the thought process.

My youngest, my baby loves the idea of reading. She will grab a book off the shelf and shove it in the face of anyone she assumes can read. She has so many books in her personal library; I may need to buy her a bookshelf to house them all. She drives me crazy asking me to read her books every day. I read them, but I feel she should be reading them on her own. She fears the idea of failing to do it by herself. There are numerous tools to help kids to learn to read. Since she loves the internet it was the best way to help her get over her fear of maturity. She can sound out the letters she just needs practice. The video below was taken months ago. Enjoy!

Ugh! When my teen daughter was younger, she wouldn't walk out the door without her do done the way she felt was worthy. She would take all of the ponytails out ripping the hair right out of her head. She is still a little obsessed over her hair.

When you have a daughter you are going to spend time doing and caring for hair. It takes me fotever to do my youngest's hair. She has really thick, long hair. I had to decid what I was going to do to it first.
Now here is the thing about little girls in school and their hair: it determines their status, who will play with you, if you are "play-with-able", personal hygene, and how fashionable you can be.

My youngest could care less how her hair looks, as long as it's not in her face. She likes to get the attention a girl with a creative design gets. Women love to flaunt their own creative looks. This heat has made her hair so dry so I thought it wad time to finally do it up. I put some of my whipped shea (with secret ingredients) on the hair while lightly misting. I used paddle brush to detangle each section and smooth all of the ingredients from root to tip. Styling the hair is a little easier nowadays. I get on the net and look at styles others do on themselves and others. I figure this should last a week or two.

My intentions were to post a couple of pics of my daughters hair. I planned on putting braids and beads in her hair. After reading a Facebook page dedicated to natural hairstyles for kids, beads weren't such a great idea. As a kid, beads were the "it" thing when you got your hair braided. My teenager always rocked beads on the end of her braids. Then there was the post. "My daughter's ends broke off and split so bad when she had braids." It happened to my kids also. The last thing I need is another daughter who is self-conscious about her hair.

So my girls get their hair done in styles that don't break off their ends or make some kind of bald spot. We all have seen the baby with the rubberbands in her head so tight it makes little bumps on the scalp. What about the 3 year old who gets a relaxer? It isn't worth all of that "show" to cause a child the pain. So her hair is sweet and simple. It is taken down and rebraided in the mornings.

Any way...
She loves to go to the park. I did say my daughter has tons of energy. Kids with a lot of pinned energy need to go play at the park at least 30 minutes every day. I am a firm believer in "go play outside."
On our way to the park, she took it upon herself to pick up a littered bottle and put it in the trash. She said "...someone must have dropped it so I need to put it in the trash for them. That way, when I go to the park it won't be all dirty." You can't disagree with logic! Viola!

Okay. I haven't posted on here in a long time. I've been kinda busy. Believe it or not, I've been taking care of work then home; I did it in that order. One thing I've learned is to do what is most important first. With that being said, first I have to take care of the bills. My mom dumped a whopping $300 car more on me. I have to say I absolutely abhor car notes. I would much rather save my money and buy a used car because of the depreciative value.

Yea!

I've been doing hair like crazy. I cut hair. My brother taught me how to cut hair a long time ago. To save money, I been the barber for the men in my life. I also do my own hair. I've always done my own hair out of necessity, long story short.

Yesterday, I began on my youngest child's hair. Oh Em Gee! She has super-thick long wavy hair. It is an all day task to do her hair. I washed and my teen daughter blow-dried. I decided to just put it in two cornrolls (what I've always called French braids).

What do you do if your son is taking off the pull-up/diaper?
I think as parents we, sometimes, forget that everything isn't always as bad as they seem. Raising a child is trial and error. There's never only one way to solve any problem.

With that being said...
If he doesn't want to wear pull-ups, don't make him. He must feel ready to get those "Big-boy" underwear. Don't worry, they make trainer underwear that are a little thinker than regular. Everyone does things in their own time and this may be his. Take this as a great parental opportunity.
