With this chip line, which formally launched on July 27, Intel decisively reclaims the power desktop crown from competitor AMD.

The Core 2 Duo processor line ranges from the 1.86-GHz E6300 chip ($183) with 2MB of cache to the 2.93-GHz Core 2 Extreme X6800 chip ($999) with 4MB of cache; all have a 1066-MHz system bus. Sony laptops, including the F-series VAIO VPCF13AFX desktop replacement laptop, always seem to look a little better than the rest. The VPCF13AFX is not only stylish but also an excellent performer with decent ergonomics and the latest technologies.

Sony has a reputation for charging premium prices, and at $1375 the VPCF13AFX seems to confirm that, but the VPCF13AFX has several luxury features such as an ExpressCard slot, Blue-tooth, IEEE1394, USB 3.0, and a Blu-ray drive--that add to the cost.

Lenovo ThinkPad X100e: Powerful Netbook with Anemic Battery Life

Here is the new Lenovo ThinkPad X100e netbook. It's faster than most netbooks, with a larger, higher-resolution screen; a spacious keyboard; and a bigger hard drive than you'll usually find in laptops. The machines start at $499, and the configuration we reviewed costs $599.

it's in red & black, if you associate red with speedy sports cars, the X100e won't disappoint. With its Athlon Neo MV-40 processor and 2GB of RAM, this ThinkPad scored a 52 on WorldBench 6, a screaming speed for netbooks. Specifically, the world’s largest computer-chip maker saw a net profit of $647 million, down from $1.4 billion last year, while revenue dropped 26% to $7.1 billion.

Although netbooks are believed to be the one bright spot in the market, revenue from Atom processors and the chipsets that drive them was also down 27 percent sequentially, to $219 million. All these numbers are down a healthy amount when compared to other quarters, but Intel executives believe things could have been much worse if not for their operational efficiency and the fact that inventory was reduced 19 percent below fourth-quarter levels.

Intel shows off 80-core processor

Intel has built its 80-core processor as part of a research project, but don't expect it to boost your Doom score just yet. It has eight cores, while Intel's Itanium 9300 (PDF) has four. And each of the Power7's cores is capable of four threads, or tasks, compared to Itanium's two per core.

While Intel is talking about a 2x [two-times] performance boost per chip, IBM is talking about almost an 8x [eight-times]," said Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at Insight64. "IBM has gone from two cores to eight cores per (chip). And each of the cores is roughly twice as fast as the [prior-generation] Power6," according to Brookwood, adding that IBM was already ahead of Intel to begin with.

BIOS Products Support Latest Intel Processor

Phoenix Technologies has announced support for the new energy-efficient 45nm Intel Core2 Duo Processor T9400 optimized for embedded applications.

Intel's new hafnium-based 45nm high-k silicon process technology enables even more processor performance by doubling transistor density and increasing cache size by up to 50%.

The Intel Core2 Duo processor T9400, validated with the Mobile Intel GM45 Express chipset, provides excellent processor and graphics performance, storage speed, system memory and reliability, making it ideal for a broad range of embedded applications.

Intel Built its 80-Core Processor

Intel has built its 80-core processor as part of a research project, but don't expect it to boost your Doom score just yet. A number of online publications are betting on the "Centrino 2" name for the upcoming mobile platform that will likely boost small CPUs ranging from 1.2GHz to 2.4GHz manufactured using a 45nm process, plus a performance range that will scale up to 2.80 GHz. New chipsets are also incoming with an updated graphics core said to double the performance from the current X3100 GPU. Among networking choices, it is expected that WiMax will make a big debut in flagship laptop models. This latter technology has received astounding support from manufacturers, but adoption has been extremely slow in the consumer market.
