Oklahoma thunder’s out the Bear in Game 2

2011-05-03T20:14:00.000-07:00

In a score of OKC 54-MEM 44 the thunder ruled the dome.

The Memphis Grizzlies were luckily able to steal Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals. But now, the Oklahoma City Thunder have all of the loud sound to own the game 2, and we’re armed and ready to make our NBA picks on this great duel in the Sooner State.

The Thunder simply made too many mistakes to be able to beat the Grizzlies, even at own home court last sunday. Russell Westbrook give his shout just 9-of-23 from the field, including missing at least a handful of shots right at the basket. There’s no shame in scoring 29 points, having eight boards, and six assists, but the seven turnovers and the horrible missed shots need to be corrected. Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka both had double-doubles, but it almost seems like both were relatively quiet. However, on the stat sheet, it says that both had absolutely massive games. Durant scored 33 points and had 11 boards, while Ibaka had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Beyond that though, no one else on the team scored more than three points. This just isn’t going to cut it, as there has to be at least a modest threat of someone else stepping up and knocking down a shot, particularly from long range to try to free up some defenders. Oklahoma City’s biggest lead of the game was just two points, and it only had 11 fast break points.

The oddsmakers are showing confidence in the Thunder, and so are we in Game 2. They have lined the hosts as the exact same favorites as they were in Game 1. We thought that it was justified then to take Oklahoma City, and we think the same right now as well.

Azkals-Myanmar 1-1

2011-05-02T19:59:00.000-07:00

James younghusband got a penalty in the 70-minutes mark .

But before the Azkals scored its goal, Neil had led the Philippines Team in fending off Myanmer's offensive strategy.

Myanmar dominated possession in the first half, with the Azkals pinned back on defense.

The hosts used their wingers, particularly Pai Soe, to create problems for the Azkals.

Philippines gaffer Hans Michael Weiss earlier said that the Azkals will use a defense-minded and counterattacking ploy because the match is being played on Myanmar’s home turf.

After missing the Mongolia game, Fulham's Etheridge was called up to the starting 11 to reinforce the back line.

Filipino-Spanish striker Angel Guirado Aldeguer also made his debut in the team.

The others in Philippines' starting XI were Rob Gier, Anton Del Rosario, Roel Gener, Ray Jonsson, Simon Greatwich, Alexander Borromeo, James Younghusband, Chieffy Caligdong, and Ian Araneta.

On the substitute's bench were Sacapaño, Espinosa, Hinrichsen, Margarse, Sabio, and Tuason.

Weiss pulled out Araneta at the start of the second half, replacing him with striker Yanti Barsales.

The match kicked off the Azkals' AFC Challenge Cup group stage campaign.

The Philippines last met Myanmar in the AFF Suzuki Cup. The match ended in a goalless draw.

ABS-CBN and the Philippine Football Federation tried to get permission to broadcast live from Myanmar.

However, despite repeated requests, Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV), the government station which will cover the event, did not get the permit from higher authorities to beam the matches live via satellite to the Philippines..

Miami Heat fans will sing anthem for the Game 2

2011-05-02T19:08:00.000-07:00

MIAMI (AP) -- For the Miami Heat, one national-anthem performer will not be enough Tuesday night.

Heat fans will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before the Game 2 between Boston Celtics. In Eastern Conference playoff series with the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night. Instead, the Heat are encouraging fans to be the singers, making that change less than one day following the announcement that Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan.

The Heat have honored soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan at home games for several seasons, and say Tuesday's game will include an enhanced military tribute. Members of the armed services will unfurl the 50-foot American flag at center court during the anthem, a job typically handled by Heat employees.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Henry Hernandez, along with his wife Julie and their children Alexa and Matthew will be honored before the game, part of the "Home Strong" program Heat President Pat Riley founded five years ago. Hundreds of soldiers have been recognized in brief pregame ceremonies at midcourt just before tip-off of every Miami home game since the program was born.

Rivers said, that It was phenomenal and awesome. It actually put things in their proper place. When you're watching film, you're cussing to yourself, you're writing bad words down on a piece of paper and all of a sudden this comes on, it was awesome. Just like we remember 9/11, I think we'll remember this moment as well. It was just really neat."

Riley has long had a saying, that sports are merely the toy department of human affairs.

Those words resonated deeply within Spoelstra on Sunday night.

"What we do has no ramifications on the real world," Spoelstra said. "That is real. It's something else that that was able to be accomplished. We're trying to focus on what we do, but it is just a game and it is the toy department. It was uplifting to find out that news

PACQUIAO TRAINING UPDATES

2011-05-02T18:58:00.000-07:00

Slowly, but surely, reigning world welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is on the way of regaining his fighting form in preparation for his title-retention showdown with Sugar Shane Mosley in May in Las Vegas

‘He is progressing, little by little,” pronounced trainer Freddie Roach. “I cannot adjust his training abruptly or court disaster by way of injuring him unnecessarily. It’s still a long way to go before the fight, so, we’re taking our preparations lightly.”

Yesterday, Roach said, Manny did the mitts with him for nine rounds, two more than the first two days last Monday and Tuesday, which he added will most-likely be maintained until Saturday when preparations marks its first week.

“It’s a day-top-day basis. We would maintain what we’ve been doing the past days till the end of the week. Or we might increase the tempo when the need arises,” Roach, who had just been named “Trainer of the Year” anew by the Boxing Writers Association of America, reasoned out.

“We could probably increase it a bit Friday and Saturday. But I’ll be happy if he can do nine rounds with the mitts going into the second week of our build up program.

Except complaining of running in the hilly 220-hectare Sta. Lucia Subdivision terrain near his headquarters at Cooyesan Hotel, Pacquiao himself sounded satisfied with the way work out has been going.

“ Medyo nanibago ako nang mag-jogging sa matarik na akyatin ditto. Mas matarik po ang tinatakbo ko rito kumpara sa Griffith Park sa Los Angeles,” he said. “Pero, maganda ito para talagang kundisyon tayo pagdating ng laban,” he added.

“. Mabuti na ‘yung masanay ako sa mahirap na ensayo, para pagdating sa laban magiging madali na para sa akin, the Pacman said, adding that this early, he is looming forward to meeting his challenger.

He also expressed elation having learned he maintained his position as the no. 1 pound-for-pound ranking by the prestigious Ring Magazine.

At kailanma’y ‘di pa na-knockout. “

“Yan ang mamalaging nasa isipan ko pagdating ng laban.Ang talunin siya at kung akin siyang ma-knockout ay isang malaking bonus,” he said.

Azkals outclass Mongolia

2011-05-02T18:54:00.000-07:00

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals delivered what everybody wanted – a resounding victory.

Putting on a dominating performance, the Azkals romped to a 2-0 win over an outclassed Mongolia side in the first of their home-and-away series in their AFC Challenge Cup before a record crowd at the Panaad Stadium here.

It was a magical moment for Philippine football as the Azkals attacked relentlessly to the delight of some 20,000 roaring fans that filled every space of the stadium.

Fittingly, it was Barotac Nuevo’s Chieffy Caligdong who broke the ice in the first half. Barotac is widely acknowledged as the country’s football capital.

He hit his goal in the 42nd minute before Phil Younghusband capped the Azkals’ splendid showing with a goal in the waning moments of injury – thanks to an assist of Jason Sabio.

If not for some missed opportunities, the Azkals could have scored more.

Also credit the Mongolian keeper for rejecting several dangerous attempts of the Azkals.

Overall, the Azkals controlled 80 percent of the match.

Despite owning the lion’s share of possession in the first half, the Azkals had a hard time penetrating the defensive phalanx of the Blue Wolves until Caligdong hit a right-footed, close range shot in the 42nd minute.

The kick was a flowing shot that started when Caligdong faked with a left shot to evade his defender before his right-footed shot passed through between the legs of goalie Ganbayar Tseveensuren that electrified the banner crowd no end.

The Azkals had seven legitimate attempts before that, but could not capitalized on the visibly inexperienced Mongolian side, which could not even make a decent throw in.

It the 36th minute, the Philippine Azkals saw their first clear goal-scoring opportunity when Ian Araneta’s header from a cross by Caligdong nearly drowned deep before goalie Tseveensuren saved it anew.

Inactive for nearly two years, the Blue Wolves finally saw scoring opportunity in the 39th minute after midfielder Tsedenbal Tumen Jargal nearly converted fine volley from a Ganbatar Tusbayar cross, but Azakals Neil Etheridge was there to deny it.

The Mongolians could not crack at the 4-4-2 formation of the Azkals, and troubles worsen after midfielder Pagamsuren Altantulga was shown the door in the 25th after two yellow cards.

Scalper held

Meantime, Senior Supt. Allan Guisihan, the Negros Provincial director, said that at least four scalpers were apprehended and were brought to the organizers’ office for questioning.

He said the scalpers were caught selling complimentary tickets to as high as P600. The four were released and were not charged, though.

The PFF has allocated 10,000 free tickets for match, the first leg of the home and away series.

“Generally, the event was peaceful except for the scalping,” Guisihan said.

He also said those people who were not able to avail of the free tickets were encouraged to watch in a wide screen at the nearby gymnasium which was provided by Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Maranon Jr.

Boozer play agains Hawk

2011-05-02T18:52:00.000-07:00

CHICAGO – Bulls forward Carlos Boozer and Hawks guard Jeff Teague were in the starting lineups for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals between Chicago and Atlanta on Monday.

Boozer had said after the morning shootaround that he was feeling "a lot better" after being limited by turf toe on his right foot and planned to suit up barring any setbacks during pregame warmups. He was a limited participant in practice on Sunday after sitting out Friday and Saturday following two off days.

Teague is starting at point guard for the Hawks with Kirk Hinrich likely missing the series after severely straining his hamstring in the clinching win in the opening round against Orlando.

Mostly a reserve during the regular season, Teague appeared in just two games and played a total of nine minutes against the Magic. Now, he has the unenviable task of trying to contain MVP candidate Derrick Rose.

Heat beat the Celtics in Game 1

2011-05-02T17:15:00.000-07:00

The Celtics are the veteran team that takes advantage of any slip-up by their less experienced opponents. Their biggest strength is their ability to execute with precision and timeliness. Forget to box out and Rajon Rondo will sneak into the lane for an offensive rebound. Overpenetrate and Glen Davis will step up to take a charge. Turn your head to help on Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen will burn you with a three.

But in the Miami Heat's 99-90 victory in Game 1 of the conference semifinals, the Celtics made their opponent look like the veteran squad. It was the Celtics' mistakes that defined this game. And playing the role of Allen was the Heat's James Jones.

While the Celtics' offense has been its weakness over the last couple of months, this loss was about their defense. And while Dwyane Wade's offensive explosion had something to do with it, the Celtics can blame themselves for a good portion of Miami's 99 points.

Each of Jones' threes was a perfect example of how the Celtics' let their guard down defensively. On each, a different Celtic made a mistake to allow Jones to get open.

With LeBron James dribbling on the left wing, Jones cuts through the paint, defended by Ray Allen. As James comes off Bosh's screen, Delonte West gets lost trying to close out on Chalmers. As Joel Anthony screens Allen on the baseline, West is actually in good position for a switch onto Jones, but as Jones curls out to the top of the key, West realizes his man has drifted into the corner. He heads there, joining Allen in defending Chalmers, as James finds Jones all alone at the top.

There were sloppy turnovers, two defensive three-second violations, and a play when Wade cut to the basket from the weak side, with the only person there in the lane to defend him being Anthony, his own teammate.

For the Celtics, Game 2 on Tuesday isn't about adjustments. It's not about defending Wade differently, making changes to the rotation, or running different plays. It's about being the team that takes advantage of mistakes, not the team that makes them.

Prediction on this Fight: Pacquiao VS Mosley

2011-05-01T20:21:00.000-07:00

Rich Thomas: Speed isn't everything, but speed plus power is pretty close, and Pacquiao has that. Although Mosley might land the odd hard shot during the fight, I can't see him scoring with the short combo of hard punches he would need to deter Pacquiao. Coping with Pacquiao's lightning fists from all angles will force Mosley to cut his punch output, and if nothing else, that will pretty much dictate Pacquiao landing more leather and outpointing him.

Scott Levinson: Speed—a longtime hallmark of Mosley’s game just might be his weakness at this late stage of his career. Except for a few scant moments, Mayweather dominated Mosley with speed and Pacquiao is no slouch in that department. While still fast himself, Mosley will struggle to contain the whirlwind style of Pacquiao. It’s difficult to write off a man as talented and well-prepared as Mosley, especially as he is facing a do-or-die situation in his career. This just seems like a tough spot for the old lion. While this year has shown that anything can happen, I just can’t believe a guy pushing 40 with 2 official wins in his last 5 fights is the right candidate to pull off this type of feat—even if it is a great like Sugar Shane. I like Pacquiao somewhere between the 9th and 11th rounds.

Jake Emen: A fight between prime incarnations of Mosley and Pacquiao at either 135 or 147 lbs would be phenomenal. This isn't the fight that we'll be seeing, however. Mosley won't be able to stay out of harm's way, and he won't be able to tag the speedier Pacquiao flush , either. Shane has never been adept at bouncing back from early struggles in a fight to turn things around late, and that is a terrible sign of things to come against Pacquiao. Pacquiao won't be able to take Shane out, but the accumulation of punishment will leave Shane humbled, broken down and altogether battered after a full 12 rounds.

May 7, 2011 Most Awaited Fight of the Year

2011-04-29T00:57:00.000-07:00

Mosley will Knock Out Pacquiao as he promise.

This May 7, Showtime PPV will offer a clash between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley, both future Hall of Fame boxers. For many boxing fans, the winner of this fight is almost certain and it is only a matter of time before the current welterweight champion and 8 time world champion Manny Pacquiao is declared a winner.

Fans are almost sure about this such that Dan Rafael of ESPN made a comment that Shane Mosley has little chances of winning the title. In reply to this, Mosley said that he will prove the doubters wrong. He even promised to deliver a knockout against the fan favorite Manny Pacquiao. Mosley called Dan Rafael a puppet, a puppet for Golden Boy Promotions and HBO.

MANILA, Philippines – Eight-division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao believes he will need a longer training period to prepare against former world welterweight champion “Sugar’ Shane Mosley.

Manny Pacquiao Training Hard, Expected to Beat Shane Mosley- The most-awaited sports event of the season will be coming to you in a few weeks as the pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao will take on Shane Mosley in an event you will never forget. Manny Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley Start Time,

Although Mosley stopped Antonio Margarito in 2009, he lost his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a lopsided decision last May. He was also held to a draw by Sergio Mora last September.

“Arum doesn't care. He only wants to do what is best for himself, certainly not for boxing. He is going to put Mosley in the ring with Pacquiao soley because of name. It's a move that will squeeze out the last gasps of Mosley's once-outstanding career so Arum can generate another big payday while doing a disservice to real boxing fans who actually care about the matchups and not just a famous but faded name,” said ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael.
