Bukti Bahwa Matahari Berputar Mengelilingi Bumi

Mungkin selama ini kita sudah dicekcoki dengan teori-teori ilmuwan kafir yang mengatakan bahwa bumilah yang mengelilingi matahari. Ternyata itu semua salah! yang sebenarnya adalah bahwa mataharilah yang mengelilingi bumi. Para yahudi kafir itu cuma iri dengan kenyataan bahwa pusat alam semesta ini adalah Kaabah, dan matahari serta semua planet-planet diciptakan Allah SWT untuk berputar mengelilingi Kaabah. Itulah sebabnya mengapa mereka berusaha mengaburkan kebenaran itu dan menyesatkan manusia terutama kita umat muslim dengan teori-teori konyol mereka.

Berikut ini akan saya coba paparkan bukti-bukti tentang ‘Diamnya Bumi dan Bergeraknya Matahari’. Perlu diketahui, diamnya bumi dan bergeraknya matahari sudah disepakati sejak dahulu oleh ahli kitab, dibenarkan oleh al-Qur’an, as-Sunnah, dan juga disepakati oleh para ulama hingga saat ini.

Bukti dalam al-Qur’an dan as-Sunnah, serta Kesepakatan para Ulama Bahwa Bumi Diam Tidak Bergerak

Firman Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala:

“Sesungguhnya Allah menahan langit dan bumi supaya jangan bergeser, dan sungguh jika keduanya akan bergeser, tidak ada seorang pun yang dapat menahan keduanya selain Allah. Sesungguhnya Dia itu Maha Penyantun lagi Maha Pengampun.” (QS. Fathir [35]:41)

Ayat ini sangat jelas menunjukkan bahwa bumi tidak bergerak, seandainya bumi itu bergerak mengelilingi matahari, berarti bumi itu bergeser dari satu tempat ke tempat lainnya.

Firman Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala:

“Dan di antara tanda-tanda kekuasaan-Nya adalah berhentinya langit dan bumi dengan izin-Nya.” (QS. Ar-Rum [30]:25)

Para ulama’ bahasa dan tafsir mengatakan bahwa maksudnya adalah berhenti dan diam di satu tempat, tidak maju dan tidak mundur.

Kemudian Ibnu Mandhur berkata: “Di antara makna ini adalah firman Allah, dan di antara tanda-tanda kekuasaan-Nya adalah berhentinya langit dan bumi dengan izin-Nya.” (QS. Ar-Rum [30]:25)

“Artinya adalah diam dan tetap, serta tidak bergerak dan tidak pula berputar.” (Lisanul Arab 12/498)

Firman Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala:

“Dan Kami jadikan di bumi itu gunung-gunung yang kokoh supaya bumi (itu) tidak goncang bersama mereka.” (QS. Al-Anbiya’ [21]:31)

“Dia menciptakan langit tanpa tiang yang kamu melihatnya dan Dia meletakkan gunung-gunung di (permukaan) bumi supaya bumi itu tidak menggoncangkan kamu.” (QS. Luqman [31]:10)

Dalil as-Sunnah:

Dari Shafwan bin Assal al-Muradi berkata: Rasulullah bersabda: “Sesungguhnya Allah menjadikan sebuah pintu taubat di sebelah barat, lebarnya sepanjang perjalanan tujuh puluh tahun, pintu ini tidak akan ditutup sehingga matahari akan terbit dari arahnya.” (Hadits Hasan Shahih riwayat Ahmad, Tirmidzi, Ibnu Majah, Thabrani)

Dalil as-Sunnah:

Dari Miqdad bin Aswad dari Rasulullah bersabda: “Pada hari kiamat matahari akan didekatkan kepada makhluk sehingga berjalak satu mil.” (HR. Ahmad, Muslim, Tirmidzi)

Dalam riwayat Uqbah bin Amir, Rasulullah bersabda: “Matahari mendekat ke bumi, maka manusia mengeluarkan keringat.” (HR. Ahmad, Thabrani, Ibnu Hibban, Hakim, berkata al-Haitsami: Sanad riwayat Thabrani Bagus)

Dalil as-Sunnah:

Dari Anas bin Malik dari Rasulullah bersabda: “Tatkala Allah menciptakan bumi, maka bumi itu bergerak, lalu Allah menciptakan gunung-gunung dan menancapkannya di atas bumi, maka bumi pun tenang.” (HR. Ahmad, Tirmidzi, dilemahkan oleh syaikh Albani)

Bukti Bahwa Matahari Berputar Mengelilingi Bumi

Firman Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala:

“Dia menciptakan langit dengan tujuan yang benar, Dia menutupkan malam atas siang dan menutupkan siang atas malam dan menundukkan matahari dan bulan, masing-masing berjalan menurut waktu yang ditentukan. Ingatlah Dialah Yang Maha Perkasa Lagi Maha Pengampun.” (QS. Az-Zumar [39]:5)

Firman Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala:

“Dan dialah yang telah menciptakan malam dan siang, matahari dan bulan. Masing-masing dari keduanya beredar di dalam garis edarnya.” (QS. Al-Anbiya’ [21]:33)

Firman Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala:

“Dan matahari berjalan di tempat peredarannya. Demikianlah ketetapan yang Maha Perkasa serta Maha Mengetahui. Dan telah Kami tetapkan bagi bulan manzilah-manzilah sehingga setelah dia sampai ke manzilah yang terakhir, kembalilah dia sebagai bentuk tandan yang tua. Tidaklah mungkin bagi matahari mendapatkan bulan, dan malampun tidak dapat mendahuli siang. Dan masing-masing beredar pada garis edarnya.” (QS. Yasin [36]: 38-40)

Dalil as-Sunnah:

“Dari Abu Dzar bahwa pada suatu hari Rasulullah pernah bersabda: “Tahukah kalian kemanakah matahari itu pergi? Mereka berkata: Allah dan Rasul-Nya lebih mengetahui. Beliau bersabda: “Sesungguhnya matahari itu berjalan sehingga sampai ke tempat peredarannya di bawah ‘Arsy, lalu dia bersujud. Dia tetap selalu seperti itu sehingga dikatakan kepadanya: Bangunlah! Kembalilah seperti semula engkau datang. Maka dia pun kembali dan terbit dari terbitnya, kemudian dia berjalan sehingga sampai ke tempat peredarannya di bawah ‘Arsy, lalu dia bersujud. Dia selalu seperti itu sehingga dikatakan kepadanya: Bangunlah! Kembalilah seperti semula engkau datang. Maka dia pun kembali dan terbit dari tempat terbitnya, kemudian berjalan sedangkan manusia tidak menganggapnya aneh sedikitpun darinya sehingga sampai ke tempat peredarannya di bawah ‘Arsy, lalu dikatakan kepadanya: Bangunlah! Terbitlah dari barat. Maka dia pun terbit dari barat.” (Shahih. HR. Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Dawud, dan selainnya)

Dalil as-Sunnah:

“Dari Abu Hurairah dari Rasulullah bersabda: … (hadits yang panjang –insyaAllah ditulis kemudian-) Maka nabi (dari bani Israil) itu pun berperang, dan dia mendekat pada desa yang dituju saat shalat ashar, maka dia berkata kepada matahari: Engkau adalah makhluk yang diperintah dan saya pun diperintah. Ya Allah, tahanlah matahari itu untukku sebentar. Maka matahari itu pun ditahan sampai Allah memberikan kemenangan baginya.” (HR Bukhari dan Muslim)

Kesepakatan para Ulama

-Berkata Imam Abdul Qahir al-Baghdadi: “Ahlus Sunnah sepakat atas tetapnya dan tenangnya bumi, dan bahwasanya bumi itu hanya bergerak kalau terjadi sesuatu misalnya gempa atau lainnya.” (Lihat al-Farqu Bainal Firaq)

-Berkata Imam al-Qurthubi: “Yang diyakini oleh kaum muslimin dan ahli kitab ialah bahwa bumi itu berhenti dan tetap tenang, dan biasanya gerakannua itu hanya terjadi kalau ada gempa.” (Tafsir al-Qurthubi)

-Berkata Imam Ibnu Hazm: “Terdapat sebuah dalil yang paten dan bisa langsung disaksikan dengan panca indera bahwa matahari mengelilingi bumi dari timur ke barat kemudian dari barat ke timur.” (Lihat al-Fishal)

-Berkata Syaikhul Islam Ibnu Taimiyah: “Siapa pun yang berada di bumi lalu melihat keadaan matahari saat terbit, saat berada di tengah-tengah, juga saat tenggelam. Di tiga waktu ini matahari berada pada kejauhan yang sama dan juga dalam satu bentuk, maka dia akan mengetahui bahwa matahari iru beredar dalam sebuah garis edar berbentuk bulat.” (Majmu’ Fatawa)

-Berkata Imam Ibnul Qayyim: “Kemudian perhatikan penciptaan bumi yang tetap sebagaimana saat diciptakan, yaitu berhenti tidak bergerak dan tenang, agar bisa menjadi tempat tinggal bagi hewan, tumbuhan dan benda-benda lainnya.” (Lihat Miftah Darus Saadah)

-Berkata al-Hafidz Ibnu Hajar saat menerangkan hadits Abu Hurairah: “Maksud dari keterangan ini adalah menjelaskan bahwa matahari beredar setiap hari dan setiap malam.” (Lihat Fathul Baari)

-Berkata Syaikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz: “Maka saya katakan, ‘Al-Qur’an, as-Sunnah, serta kesepakatan para ulama dan realita yang ada menunjukkan bahwa matahari itu beredar di garis edarnya sebagaimana yang ditetapkan oleh Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sedangkan bumi itu tetap diam tidak bergerak, yang mana Allah menyiapkannya sebagai tempat tinggal dan Allah memantapkannya dengan gunung-gunung agar tidak bergerak bersama mereka.” (Lihat al-Adillah an-Naqliyah wal-Hissiyah)

Dan masih banyak lagi perkataan ulama yang serupa.

Hewan-hewan yang sering kita siksa

serta cara penyiksaanya.!

1. Ikan cupang

Dulu pernah ni beli cupang nyari yg jago ngedok pas sekat cupannya dibuka, biasanya yg jago diadu, ampe siripnya rusak lah, mulutnya putuslah, dll, trus diobatinnya pake daun ketapang, seru dah... , trus klo kalah, cupang yg kalah jadi milik yg menang..tp kasian juga cupannya.

harga cupang : 500-5000 lebih yg bagan
kisaran hidup : setelah di beli 1-5 hari klo kalah adu, klo menang 1-2 minggu lebih,
cara penyiksaan : diadu ampe salah satu mati, di jemur trus kelupaan, di jantur (di masukin plastik yg panjangnya 5 meter), botol di kobok-kopok pake sumpit / pake dinamo tamiya.

2. Ayam warna-warni

Nah hewan yg ini kocak juga, anak ayam yg masih kecil bulunya dicat warna warni biar terlihat unyu-unyu, pas dibeli biasanya pake kandang kecil gitu yg terbuat dari kardus sma kawat/ dipelastikin, trus pas nyampe rumah berisik amat, apalagi kalo malem.

harga ayam : 1500-2000 an
kisaran hidup : pas beli, besoknya dah mati/ ga nyampe seminggu dah mokat, kadang ada yg ampe dewasa, tapi warna bulunya bakal pudar,
cara penyiksaan : dicat, ga'tau pake cat apa, pake cat kapal kali , trus ditelantarkan ampe stres & mati, kadang ke injek, buat makanan kucing tetangga.

3. Ikan hias

Nih biasanya ikan dijual abang-abang yg pake gerobak, biasanya beli buat piaraan doang pas dirumah, tetapi yg paling menjengkelkan adalah saat dibeli dan dibawa pulang tuh ikan dah mati/mabok, megap-megap minta dikasih napas buatan, dan yg paling membingungkan adalah tuh ikan pas dibawa tukannya/abang-abang ga ada yg mati, ga tau pake resep apa abangnya supaya ga mati, padahal dibawa jalan sama abangnya sampai terguncang-guncang sejauh ribuan KM, ajaib kan????

harga ikan : bervariasi,
kisaran hidup : langsung mati pas nyampe rumah atau besoknya dah mati.,
cara penyiksaan : pas dibawa di kocok' ampe tuh ikan mabok/teler trus diobok-obok & mati atau di kasih makan banyak banget ampe makanannya membusuk dan mengeluarkan gas amoniak.

4. Kelomang/kumang/siput/keong/banyak deh sebutannya

Ni kelomang biasanya banyak yg beli, dijual secara gerombol dalam satu tempat, keunikannya adalah ni binatang eksotis, cuma ada di laut, jadi anak-anak pada beli, biasanya klo cangkannya ditiup kelomangnya keluar, napas ane bau kali? biasanya dipake buat lomba ama anak-anak pake grobak gitu, trus kadang dijual pake kandang berbentuk rumah-rumahan yg tingkat kayak rumah barbie..

harga kelomang : 500 atau 1000 yg gede 3000an,
kisaran hidup : biasanya ga mati, tapi ilang, klo mati biasanya agak lama, kecuali tuh kelomang direndem diaer.
cara penyiksaan : sering terjatuh hinnga cangkang pecah, kerendem aer berhari-hari (harusnya dia di air laut, bukan di aer tawar )ga dikasih makan, keluar sendiri dari cangkangnya, dll

5. Burung emprit/pipit warna warni

Nah pasti tau nih burung... ni burung kasian juga, kalo dibeli musti harus ama kandangnya yg dari kawat, klo ga pake kandangnya biasanya kaki burung nya diiket pake tali, pas burungnya mau terbang malah ga bisa , abisnya kakinya diiket.

harga burung : 1000-1500 an,
kisaran hidup : biasanya klo dah kasian diterbangin, atau lepas, atau seminggu dah mati,
cara penyiksaan : kaki burung di iket, jadi pas burung terbang tinggal tarik talinya tuh burung langsung nyungsep.

6. Kelinci, marmut & hamster

binatang ini termasuk yg paling imut-imut diantara yang lainnya, biasanya yg suka beli adalah anak-anak yg punya duit lebih , abis tuh harganya termasuk mahal, dan kalo beli musti ama kandangnya, kecuali kelinci yg biasanya klo ga beli pake kandangnya ya pake kardus,

harga kelinci : dulu 25000-50000an yg gede, sekarang ga tau,
harga hamster : 15000-30000an waktu dulu, tapi biasanya 5000an sih,
kisaran hidup : 1-2 hari dah mati paling lama 2 minggu keatas, tapi biasanya ada yg awet juga sih,
cara penyiksaan : keseringan dipegang, jadinya stres dan mati

7.Kura-kura brazil

Nah kalo yang ini termasuk jarang banget dijual disekolah, pertama waktu masih kecil sih imut-imut dan lucu, tapi pas dah gede ganas banget, dah gitu klo dia buang kotoran banyak banget.

harga kura-kura : sepasang 30000 an plus kandang,
kisaran hidup : biasanya lama, tp mati dengan cara digondol tikus, ilang, kerendem.
cara penyiksaan : sering dipegangin, trus ditaro diaer selama hidupnya, padahal kura-kura ga boleh ditaro diaer berhari-hari, nanti numbuh jamur dan cangkannya lembek, trus suka di tebalikin kocak ngeliat kura-kura kaga bisa balik lagi kalo di tebalikin.

Berubah Menjadi Batu

Natron adalah danau garam, airnya memiliki pH sampai 10,5, begitu kaustik hingga bisa membakar kulit dan mata hewan yang tidak bisa beradaptasi dengannya. Ditambah lagi dengan suhu airnya yang bisa mencapai 60 derajat Celcius.

Danau Natron, namanya diambil dari natron -- mineral natrium karbonat dekahidrat (sodium carbonate decahydrate) yang biasa digunakan orang Mesir kuno mengeringkan organ selama proses mumifikasi atau membuat mumi.

Kandungan mineral dalam airnya juga punya fungsi sebagai pengawet bangkai hewan malang yang tercebur lalu mati. Membuat mereka seakan dicelupkan dalam adonan semen. Tidak semua danau memiliki air yang segar dan dapat menjadi tempat tinggal makluk hidup, seperti danau mematikan ini yang terdapat di Tanzania, Afrika Timur.

Di danau yang bernama Danau Natron ini, semua hewan yang terendam dalam air danau tersebut akan berubah menjadi batu.

Hal ini terjadi diakibatkan suhu danau yang bisa naik menjadi 60 derajat sewaktu-waktu, serta alkalinitas yang tinggi akibat akumulasi abu vulkanik dari lembah Great Rift. Fotografer Nick Brandt datang ke lokasi, untuk mendokumentasikan korban danau tersebut seperti bangkai burung dan hewan kecil yang telah membatu karena pengapuran.

Satu-satunya spesies hewan yang dapat bertahan hidup di bawah permukaan danau adalah alkaline tilapia (Alcolapia alcalica), ikan sejenis nila yang bisa bertahan hidup di sepanjang tepi yang airnya kurang asin. Juga sejumlah bakteri.

Fotografer alam liar, Nick Brandt menggunakan bangkai-bangkai hewan di Danau Natron sebagai model dari serial fotografi terbarunya yang mengerikan.

"Menemukan mereka terdampar di sepanjang tepian Danau Natron, saya pikir sangat luar biasa. Bayangkan, setiap detil, dari ujung lidah kelelawar, rambut-rambut kecil di wajahnya, seluruh tubuh elang pemakan ikan, diawetkan dengan sempurna," kata Brandt seperti dimuat CBSNews.com, 3 Oktober 2013.
Belum diketahui bagaimana bisa burung-burung dan kelelawar terjun dalam air yang mematikan. Menurut Brandt, mungkin mereka bingung dengan "refleksi alami ekstrem" pada permukaan danau tersebut -- yang kerap berubah warna. Mirip dengan fenomena burung terbang ke arah jendela kaca dan menabraknya.
Saat memotret bangkai binatang yang kini mirip patung itu, Brant memutuskan untuk membuat mereka dalam posisi seakan masih hidup. Menaruh mereka di ranting pohon atau di atas air. "Aku menempatkan mereka dalam posisi 'hidup'. Seakan hidup lagi setelah mati," kata dia.

Sebagian hasil karya Brant kini dipamerkan di Hasted Kraeutler Gallery di New York dan akan dipublikasikan dalam buku fotografi berjudul, "Across The Ravaged Land".

Asal Usul Natron

Sementara, ahli ekologi di University of Leicester, David Harper mengatakan, jika di tempat lain bangkai hewan yang mati akan terurai dengan cepat, beda halnya di Danau Natron.

"Saat mengering, garam akan membentuk lapisan kerak dan akan bertahan selamanya," kata Harper yang pernah mengunjungi Danau Natron empat kali, seperti repoter yang mengutip dari NBC News.

Garam yang terkandung di Danau Natron tidak seperti garam masak yang dipanen dari laut. Melainkan kapur magmatik yang telah ditempa dalam bumi, keluar melalui aliran lava, dan disemburkan ke udara menjadi awan abu setinggi 10 mil.

Pelakunya adalah Ol Doinyo Lengai, sebuah gunung berapi berusia 1 juta tahun yang terletak di selatan Danau Natron.

Hannes Mattsson, seorang peneliti di Swiss Institute of Technology di Zurich mengatakan, gunung berapi lain biasanya memuntahkan silikat, namun Ol Doinyo Lengai adalah satu-satunya di planet ini yang menyemburkan "natrocarbonatite" -- yang kaya akan sodium, kalium karbonat, nyerereite dan gregoryite. Jauh lebih asin dari silikat.

Material abu vulkanik lalu dikumpulkan air hujan yang masuk ke danau. Itu menjelaskan mengapa hewan yang tercebur di dalamnya terlihat seperti telah jatuh dalam ember semen. Air danau juga mengalami lonjakan salinitas karenanya.

Sementara, Gunung Ol Doinyo Lengai telah meletus sedikitnya delapan kali sejak 1883. Terakhir meletus pada 2007 lalu.

Allowing Negative Feelings

One of the more difficult aspects of being a parent is dealing with our children's negative feelings. There are a number of reasons why this is so, some of which come from our own experiences with parents and some out of a need to see our children happy. If you come from the old school of parenting, then you learned as a child that expressing your negative feelings such as anger, disappointment, sadness, frustration, and so forth, was a sign of weakness, or perhaps it signified that you were just being ill-mannered or self-centered. The old saying "If you don't stop crying, I'll give you something to cry about," captures one sort of attempt to suppress such feelings in children. Another approach is to ignore the negative outpouring while also bombarding the child with as many positive anecdotes as you can in an attempt to maybe cover up or overcome the situation. Yet another attempt is simply to fix the problem so that the negative feelings disappear. In each of these cases the end result is the same: the child senses that the expression of such feelings is not okay and that it would be best to try and suppress them. This can have far reaching effects not only for children, but also for adults who have successfully learned to suppress negative feelings. The problem is that emotional suppression usually leads to other deleterious effects on our overall functioning and happiness. By suppressing our negative feelings and reactions, we create holes in reality that leave us second-guessing ourselves and prevent us from knowing the full picture of who we are and what we can do. In other words, the suppression of negative feelings ultimately ties up our good feelings too so that we find ourselves operating in very tight, rigid boxes that constrict the total personality and leave us sometimes with inexplicable reactions such as depression or anxiety.

For parents, it is important to learn how to allow our children to express their negative feelings, and then to channel those feelings into positive activity. This is much more difficult than it may sound because what is required of parents is that they actually contain their children's pain at times without trying to get rid of it, suppress it, or simply by-pass it. It might help to begin by looking at how we go about suppressing negative feelings and reactions and then discussing a corrective method for allowing them. See if you can find yourself in any of the types that are discussed below.

The Fix-It Approach

The "fix-it" approach is aimed at taking away the child's pain as quickly as possible, almost before it can be felt. Let's say Suzie comes home from school and is very upset that several of her friends have been invited to spend the night at Joanna's house on Saturday, but Suzie wasn't invited. Mom reacts by whisking Suzie off to the mall and buying her several new outfits of her choice, and then maybe taking her out to lunch with a promise to have a slumber party of her own in several weeks. Suzie reacts well. Within no time at all she is smiling and looking forward to her slumber party. You might ask, "So what's wrong with offering a slumber party as an alternative here?" Well maybe nothing, however, the problem is that no time was given to Suzie to adequately feel and express her disappointment and hurt at being left out. Worse yet, Suzie is being taught a coping mechanism that will cause her problems down the road: When your feeling disappointed or unhappy, reward yourself - go shopping! There is nothing wrong in cheering up your disappointed child, but first it's important to let them have the experience of the disappointment, and then help them figure out the best way to cope with it. Moreover, the cure must be something that will have healthy long-term consequences, not create a new problem behavior or habit.

The "Just Get Over It" Approach

This one goes along with the "just put it behind you" approach. Going back to Suzie's situation, Mom might say, "Hey, everyone gets left out sometimes. Come on, just smile and shrug it off." That doesn't really sound so bad. After all, it is true that everyone experiences rejection at some time or another, and it is something we all have to deal with sooner or later. The problem in this scenario, though, is that the feelings have not been dealt with at all, but rather the message imparted is to just get rid of them without giving them any attention whatsoever. Over time, children interpret the "just get over it" approach as a value judgement in which negative feelings, particularly those that cause emotional pain, are weak or silly and maybe even unacceptable. As the child practices "getting over it" quickly and succinctly, they may develop the even more dangerous habit of not allowing themselves to feel painful reactions at all, but to suppress them before they come to the surface. This is highly dangerous because it nullifies the capacity to listen to certain emotional warnings that are necessary to make healthy decisions. The young man who has learned not to feel rejection may plunge headlong into relationships where he is repeatedly rejected and trammeled upon because he can't access his own emotional warning system.

The "Children Are Starving in China" Approach

This one might sound quite familiar to many of you as one your parents used quite often. Someone is always having a more difficult time than you are, and that translates to mean your feelings are not important in the larger scheme of things. Suzie's hurt feelings about being left out of the slumber party is nothing compared to the pain starving children feel. Well yes, that is true. But does that mean that Suzie shouldn't feel any pain at all at being left out? Yes, that's exactly the message Suzie is being given. "Your feelings really aren't important here, because others feel more pain than you do." It can be helpful to place one's own seemingly negative circumstances within the larger picture sometimes. It can allow us to draw ourselves out of a sort of wallowing, self-pitying pattern. However, we must first learn how to feel, express, and understand our own reactions before figuring out how best to cope with them. It's fine to help children gain a larger picture of humanity, and in fact it's a good idea. It's not a good idea to use that picture to mollify or belittle a child's emotional pain, no matter how trite it may seem to the adult. It's through the experience of our own emotionally painful experiences that we are able to understand and identify with the pain of others.

The "My Problems Are Bigger Than Yours" Approach

When Jeremy has a melt-down on the way home from school because he couldn't find a picture he drew that day in his backpack, it can feel like punishment after a long day at the office where you were criticized by your boss, saddled with too much work to do in too little time, and had to deal with gossipy co-workers that were taking stabs at each other. The most natural response to Jeremy would be to say something along the lines of "Knock it off. You don't know what trouble is!" And, of course you are right. He has no idea what it's like to be in your shoes. The difficulty here is that what's needed is to separate your stress from Jeremy's experience. By overpowering Jeremy's feelings with yours, you are communicating to him that his feelings are insignificant and not worthy of consideration. Parents who consistently meet their children's emotionally painful expressions with statements like "just wait until you're an adult," or "why don't you watch the news for ten minutes" are sending the message that such feelings should be suppressed and worse yet, not addressed.

A Better Approach

So how should parents deal with children's negative emotions and expressions? The first rule is to simply allow them to occur. This is not so easy. It means that parents must be able to endure the feeling expressed and at the same time encourage a thorough enough expression so that the child feels understood. In essence, what this means is that the parent plays the role of facilitator and container at the same time. You facilitate the expression of the emotion while also containing the feeling without any attempt to get rid of it, bypass it, or suppress it.
Let's take these two tasks one at a time. To facilitate the expression, the parent needs to draw out the feeling by asking leading questions, listening carefully to the responses, and reflecting back what is heard. Going back to Suzie in the early example, let's walk through the process. As Suzie comes in the door from school and tells you she is very upset, you would respond by asking questions about exactly what happened, how she learned that the other girls had been invited to the friend's house, where was she when she heard about it, how did she feel when she heard about it, and what did she do next. Maybe she cried, or went to the bathroom so no one would see how she felt, and so forth. You want to get an almost visual picture of what happened while keeping very attuned to the development of feelings along the way. Maybe Suzie felt hurt at some points in the process, disappointed at others, and perhaps angry at being left behind. Help her elaborate not only the events, but also her feelings along the way and her emotional reactions. As she tells you what happened, reflect back to her what you think she is saying. It's like a check and balance to be sure that you understand what happened, how she felt, and as a result, can now really empathize with her.
That's the facilitation piece. Now for the containing piece. Actually, this takes place as you facilitate the conversation. By allowing Suzie to recount every facet of the events along with encouraging her to verbalize the emotional process that took place, you are communicating your ability to understand how she feels while also imparting your concern and caring. You are letting her know that you are able to sustain her painful feelings and are not afraid of them, angered by them, or unable to hear them. As she tells you about them, you are in fact emotionally containing them for her so that she can gain some space from them and some control over them. More importantly you are sending the message that life has its disappointments and that she is strong enough to endure them and work through them. How does she know this? Because you are containing and sharing her feelings in a way that shows strength and acceptance.
In some instances, the expression of the feelings are all that is required and necessary. In many cases, however, there is another step that follows which is to problem-solve. In Suzie's case, it would be important to find out if she has had other trouble with these particular friends. Or perhaps she needs to develop some other friendships if the girls in question have been routinely rejecting or cruel. It might also be that Suzie has contributed to the problem in some way, but has no awareness of it. A thorough examination of all the possibilities would help Suzie learn to analyze problems to see if there are ways she can resolve them. Having her own slumber party as mentioned above might be just fine once she has thoroughly worked through her hurt feelings and analyzed the situation to see if she has somehow contributed to it.
