Clipping Dew Claws - Always a Drama?

The highlight of the doggy maintenance calendar came around again last week. Yep, those dew claws were starting to look like contenders in the guiness book of records. Unfortunately Jack is about as receptive to nail clipping as I am to molar extraction, so stealth was required!

We've tried wrapping him in a towel, bribery, kindness and being firm - all resulting in total failure with us coated in hair and a small pug sulking in his bed.
The only technique that works for us is sneaking up on him while he's asleep and snipping a nail with toenail clippers (he can sense the guillotine dog nail clippers
from 2 feet!)

Any tips on how you clip your dogs nails - we'd love to hear from you?

Missing Dog | Chipping Camden | Reward Offered

A REWARD has been posted for a missing pug at Chipping Campden.

Popular pedigree puppy Saffron went missing at 12.15pm on Wednesday from her home at Calf Lane.

Frantic owner Jane Glennie believes her beloved pet could have been stolen.

She has put up posters and offered a reward for the 13-month dog's safe return.

She said: "Everyone in Campden knows her and adores her.

"They're all out looking for her. She goes for walk through town every day with my Labrador Bess and rescue greyhound Wendy.

"And she's a real sight as she wears a red harness.

"She's a fabulous, lovely little friendly animal - but perhaps a bit too friendly as anyone could have picked her up and put her in a car.

"We started to call her for her afternoon walk and she'd vanished.

"Possibly someone left the door open and she went into the street."

Saffron is a faun Pug, wearing a red harness with a name and address tag.

She is also micro-chipped.

We're adding to our range of dog tags. Soon you'll be able to buy these great tags from a US designer. There's lots of finishes and designs to choose from and they all come with free engraving.

Designs include a St Francis tag (patron saint of animals), shamrock, skull and cross bones and tatoo styles. We hope to be offering these online in the next couple of weeks, so watch this space!

We love to hear from customers, whether what we do is good or bad. We all love getting great customer service and we always aim to give as good a service as we would expect to receive ourselves.

Sometimes though, things don't always run smoothly. Some times the odd technical glitch pops up, sometimes it's third party intervention whether it's a royal mail strike, a supplier not delivering on time or even a power cut. We try to deal with these issues as best we can, in order to still deliver great customer service.

We always remember that it's a living human being on the end of the phone or receiving an email, in the same way that we, ourselves are not robots.

I'm starting a new Bigup feature on the Jack Paws blog, "bigging up" favourite pet related (even in the loosest of terms) products.

Today, I want to talk about Wildberry Incense sticks. Not your average, over powering incense from down the local hippy stall, but really good quality incense which actually smell like they say on the tin when you burn them!

With 2 house cats and a small windy dog, and a dislike for chemical overload from aerosols and plugins, I've been using oil burners and incense sticks for a few years now. I originally came across Wildberry Incense whilst on holiday in Looe in Cornwall. I dislike the heady smell of many incense sticks, and was wowed by the rather delicous scents of the Wildberry range.

I think there's something like 75 fragrances to choose from, although Mysteriosa and Fairy Dust are particular favourites of mine. While I'd love to travel down to Looe everytime I run out, sadly that's just not practical, so I've found Crafty Jungle sell them at a very reasonable price. And as scratch and sniff monitors just aren't available yet, you can by packs of mini sticks to find the scents you like!

Product Testing: The Furminator!!!

What is it?
A very normal looking grooming comb which makes you wonder what's so special!

What do you do with it?
We bought a small one to try out on our pug, one long haired cat and our other semi-long haired cat. You have to make sure there are no knots or tangles in your pet's coat (it's not for detangling), then lightly start grooming in short strokes toward the tail.

Results?
Lot's of fur flying around the room, sticking to everything so we highly recommend you use it somewhere without carpets or upholstery and wear old or easily defluffed clothing!

Our three absolutely loved being groomed with it (which is really something as our semi-long hair hates being groomed.

We've seen a huge reduction in "dust bunnies" and hair on the carpet. Neither of our cats have coughed up a furball since we started using it, plus all their coats are looking really glossy and sleek.

How often should you use it?
It's recommended to use 1-2 times a week depending on your pets shedding abilities.

Bungee Dog Leads Review

You may have wondered what on earth all the fuss is about bungee dog leads (or indeed actually what they are!)

Well, there's a variety of different companies producing a bungee dog lead, the picture on the left shows one of the Ezydog versions which comes in a variety of colours and specifications. This one is the one that looks most like a traditional bungee rope (i.e. the sort you use to tether your luggage to your roof rack!)

The Ezydog Cujo version as seen here, has an easygrip handle which helps spread the weight of your dog pulling across the spread of your hand as well as giving you a better, more comfortable grip. (we have the 40" black cujo for Jack, and the handle has really proven it's worth this winter as I'm finding icey fingers don't grip so well!) This dispersement of weight, mixed with the bungee action of the actual lead reduces strain on your arm and shoulder. If you have a dog that pulls a lot, it won't stop them from pulling but it will reduce the impact on you and any jolting on your dog's neck, making walks a good deal more pleasant for both of you!

We've been using our Cujo lead for 5 months now and it's just been brilliant. We've also started using it with a cujo extension (actually designed for use with the 25" lead, but we use it with the 40" as we've not got on with extendable leads which seem to get stuck and tangle a lot.)

The one thing that is close to our hearts is providing excellent customer service, which includes getting our customers orders to them in super quick time. In order to keep prices low, and to provide great service we've forged great relationships with our suppliers to allow us to do just-in-time delivery of stock in some cases.

Unfortunately, our supplier of Dear Dog products hasn't been able to provide an acceptable level service to us, so with regret, we will no longer be selling these products online.

Jack's Product of the Week: Camo Bed by Dear Dog

We've just started stocking a new range of dog beds by dear dog. We've been trialing the camo bed with Jack and he absolutely loves it. He wastes no time snuggling down into it, and it's currently doubling as a toy box, as he likes to "bury" toys underneath the removable cushion.

As he's still a puppy, we have to report he's had more than his fair share of "little" accidents on the bed! We've washed the whole bed once, and the removable cushion at least 10 times and the fabric is wearing well (considering the difference in no. of washing between the 2 parts of the bed, there's no difference we can see in the material.)

All the beds are available in 2 sizes (as with all Dear Dog products, they are aimed towards the small to medium sized dog market.) They are beautifully made, and ooze quality - they're certainly some of the nicest soft dog beds we've seen on the market.
