New Hints Show That Red Wine May Slow Aging

Red wine may be much more potent than was thought in extending human lifespan, researchers say in a new report that is likely to give impetus to the rapidly growing search for longevity drugs.

The study is based on dosing mice with resveratrol, an ingredient of some red wines. Some scientists are already adding resveratrol in capsule form, and in the form of a rich face cream!!!

The report is part of a new wave of interest in drugs that may enhance longevity.now been opened to drugs that exploit an ancient biological survival mechanism, that of switching the body’s resources from fertility to tissue maintenance.
The improved tissue maintenance seems to extend life by cutting down on the degenerative diseases of aging, this is HUGE.
Research started nearly 20 years ago by Dr. Leonard Guarente of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology showed recently that the famine-induced switch to tissue preservation might be triggered by activating the body’s sirtuins. Dr. Sinclair, a former student of Dr. Guarente, then found in 2003 that sirtuins could be activated by some natural compounds, including resveratrol, previously known as just an ingredient of certain red wines.

Dr. Sinclair’s finding led in several directions. He and others have tested resveratrol’s effects in mice with great success! One of the more spectacular results was obtained last year by Dr. John Auwerx of the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in Illkirch, France.
He showed that resveratrol could turn plain vanilla, couch-potato mice into champion athletes, making them run twice as far on a treadmill before collapsing.
In April, Sirtris reported that its formulation of resveratrol, called SRT501, reduced glucose levels in diabetic patients.

The company plans to start clinical trials of its resveratrol mimic soon. Sirtris’s value to GlaxoSmithKline is presumably that its sirtuin-activating drugs could be used to treat a spectrum of degenerative diseases, like cancer and Alzheimer’s,
The Wisconsin scientists used a dose on mice equivalent to just 35 bottles a day. But red wine contains many other resveratrol-like compounds that may also be beneficial. Taking these into account, as well as mice’s higher metabolic rate, a mere four, five-ounce glasses of wine “starts getting close” to the amount of resveratrol they found very effective, Dr. Weindruch said.

Resveratrol can also be obtained in the form of capsules marketed by several companies. that include extracts of red wine and of a Chinese plant called giant knotweed. The Wisconsin researchers conclude that resveratrol can mimic many of the effects of a caloric-restricted diet “at doses that can readily be achieved in humans.”

ROAST TURKEY WITH APPLES AND ONIONS

I (14 Lb Organic Turkey)

2 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

1/4 cup chopped fresh sage

2 cloves garlic, and 1/2 cup finely chopped raw walnuts

1 tablespoon sea salt

1/4 cup rasins

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

dash lemon pepper, and ground cinnamon

5 crisp apples, such as pink lady or Fujii, cored and quartered

5 red onions, finely chopped

Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Wash and rub turkey with lemon juice, brush skin with butter.

In a small bowl, combine sage, garlic,salt, lemon pepper. Loosen skin over breast and work sage mixture under skin, place mixture in cavity of the turkey. Tie legs together, place in a large roasting pan, roast 20 minutes. Lower temperature to 350, bast often, tent and roast slowly for 2 hours, or lower temp to 300 and cook up to 3 hours.

Fry giblets and neck lightly in oil

add water, bring to boil and simmer with fresh Rosemary on low flame

Add half cup, celery and 3 green onions, sliced thin

use turkey drippings and add to gravy

cook on stove top low till gravy thickens

Let turkey sit; and cool 15-20 min before carving

Serve with buttered corn,

Holiday yams and or butternut squash and set freshly boiled sweet cranberry sauce aside to cool for turkey topping.

Serve warm Apple cider, or sparkling grape juice with meal or toast with a white delicous wine

Here are a few tips to follow-

The effects of poor dental care can range from tooth decay to gingivitis, and even to more serious problems like periodontitis; tooth and bone loss. In fact, 1 in 2 adults has gingivitis, and may not even know it. Fortunately, proper dental care, including cleaning teeth correctly and regularly, can help prevent most of these problems.

If you don't clean your teeth well every day, you're putting yourself at risk for tooth decay; period.

Signs of decay include visible holes in your teeth, pain when you bite and sensitive gums and feelings of pain in your teeth.

When the carbohydrates in the food and drinks that you consume aren't cleaned from the teeth regularly, they provide fuel for cavity-causing bacteria. These bacteria can start forming plaque on teeth soon after eating, so if you're a frequent snacker, you may want to clean your teeth more often than twice a day. The truth is, bacteria are almost always present in the mouth, and frequent cleaning—and limiting sugary foods—may help prevent decay.

Cracking the case of HYPERPIGMENTATION (Age/Sun Spots)

Much of the world’s population is considered Fitzpatrick type IV–VI.

By 2050, according to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2000, 50% of Americans will be of darker-skinned racial backgrounds. One of the most common skin conditions in higher Fitzpatrick clients is that big word called ... hyperpigmentation. dark spots on the skin's surface; from aging and the harmful rays of the sun.

Although many of the popular treatments performed on a regular basis on Caucasians may be well-tolerated by clients with darker skin, special considerations need to be taken to ensure positive treatment outcomes for such clients. A deeper understanding of the causes of hyperpigmentation, and of the myriad of ingredients available for its treatment, will help clients understand what may cause and correct it.

Skin discolorations

Within any ethnic background, a variety of Fitzpatrick skin types can be identified. Darker skin can commonly be seen in Hispanics, Latinos, Africans, African-Americans, Caribbeans, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, East Indians, Pakistanis, Eskimos, Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Japanese, Thai, Cambodians, Malaysians, Indonesians and Aleuts, according to dermatologist Pearl Grimes, MD.¹ With this broad global representation in mind, we can should expect to see an increase in clients of one or mixed racial backgrounds with darker skin.

The most apparent difference in the skin of those from different ethnicities is, of course, the color, although there are also differences in skin thickness, vascularity, and predispositions to certain skin conditions and diseases. Hyperpigmentation can occur due to UV exposure, cutaneous trauma or hormonal fluctuations. Studies by dermatologist Susan Taylor in 2005 demonstrate that up to 86% of women of Latino, Asian and African descent are concerned about skin discolorations.²

Melanogenesis and skin color

Melanin is the complex molecule that is responsible for the pigment in the body; specifically eyes, hair and skin. Melanin works to protect by reducing the penetration of UV rays into the skin and, even more importantly, into the nuclei of cells where DNA resides. Those with both dark and light skin have the same number of melanocytes—the cells responsible for melanogenesis or melanin production—although their level of responsiveness differs. Clients whose genetic heredity is that of global regions with extreme UV exposure have melanocytes that will, out of protective necessity, instigate the process of melanin deposition much more quickly than someone with lighter skin. Some clients with mixed genetic heritage may have lighter skin, but still have a greater predisposition for hyperpigmentation than a typical Fitzpatrick skin type I or II.

As a result of inflammation or hormonal fluctuations, the following process is stimulated.

Microdermabrasion is performed to lighten the spots by resurfacing the skin and depending on the sensitivity of the skin, I add a peel for additional renewal. I like to finish off the Treatment with Photo Lite Therapy to calm and soothe as well as attack the Hyperpigment process from the Dermis out.I offer a Bleaching gel I send the client home with to use daily, in between facials for optium results. please note when having the series done; one must know that Avoiding the sun and exercise directly afterwards is strongly suggested and must be avoided at all cost.

The Breakout Role

Just as you may see a little thinning in your hairline or the slight shadow of a moustache, more blackheads and blemishes are a sign of aging. "About a third of women will get adult acne, usually in their early 30s, even if they didn't have breakouts when they were younger," says Katherine Vaccaro PMA (Para Medical Esthetician at the Facial Loft in Dana Point,CA and co-founder of Ziba Botanical). "Starting in your late 20s, estrogen levels decline faster than testosterone." Because testosterone is an androgenic hormone, it increases masculine qualities (hence the new facial hair) and boosts oil production, plugging your pores and causing repeat blemishes. The difference between adult acne and the teenage type? The approach to ethnic skin care and treatments can be challenging. This mainly is because ethnic skin has a propensity to develop hyperpigmentation—or a darker discoloration of the skin—or hypopigmentation—a lighter discoloration of the skin—when the appropriate products or treatments are not utilized. To further examine the challenges of ethnic skin care, one must first define ethnic skin.

Defining ethnic skin
     The Fitzpatrick Skin Type classification often is used to define ethnic skin. This scale ranges from type I (ivory white skin) to type VI (dark brown skin) and identifies skin type based on its reaction to UV light. Skin of color can be classified as skin types IV–VI.

Biology of ethnic skin
     Pigmentation in the skin is determined at the cellular level. Melanocytes are the cells that make melanin, or pigment, in the skin. Melanosomes are the packages of melanin produced by the melanocytes. Pointy extensions of the melanocytes then transfer melanosomes into the keratinocytes.
     Although there may be some variation in the number of melanocytes among races, this difference is not striking. In all races, there are approximately 2,000 epidermal melanocytes/mm on the head and forearms, and 1,000 epidermal melanocytes/mm on the rest of the body. These differences are present at birth. Thus, all people have the same total number of melanocytes; it is the distribution of melanosomes in the keratinocytes that correlates with skin color. In white skin—typically types I–III—melanosomes are small and aggregated in complexes. In black skin—types V and VI—there are larger melanosomes that are distributed singly within keratinocytes.
     The role of melanin in the skin is to absorb and scatter energy from UV light to protect the epidermal cells from damage. Melanin provides considerable protection from sun damage, and the degree of protection corresponds directly to the degree of pigmentation. We offer sun protection thats gentle yet effective, Full Sun Block with Soothing Aloe Vera and Japanese Green tea; that controls and prevents significant prevention of photo-aging, which is one of the primary cosmetic concerns in Fitzpatrick skin types I–III.
     The cosmetic advantage of skin types IV–VI is an increased protection from photo-aging. However, the cosmetic disadvantage of skin of color is its propensity to develop hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, which ethnic clients frequently experience and are most concerned about preventing.³Essentially, any inflammation or injury to the skin can be followed immediately by an alteration in pigmentation.We suggest to wear a Full Block under makeup every day and to fade and even bleach out any existing spots and damage already caused in the evening; and our day protection to protect any further damage.

Hyperpigmentation
Any ingredient that has a potential to cause significant irritation or dryness when applied to the skin can cause pigment alteration in ethnic skin. Although hypopigmentation can occur, hyperpigmentation is very common. The patients at greatest risk are those with dry, sensitive skin. The most common topical treatments associated with pigment alterations include benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, salicylic acid and glycolic acid, I suggest, for the client to be supervised and instructed on the usage, for night time correction. Protection durning the day light is crutial, a two step regime. Additionally, in predisposed clients, hydroquinone can be applied in a 3-6 month preparation and we offer our Luminous peptide serum to follow after, for the hot summer months when the sun is most damaging to this condition of hyperpigmentation. Typically, individuals first report dryness and irritation. In more severe cases, this is followed by redness and even superficial erosions, thats why I offer free consultations with the product purchase.
In skin types I–III, if any reaction occurs, the skin typically will return to normal once use of the product is discontinue, the sun block will be your best friend in controlling this condition.Like brushing your teeth everyday!

. Ethnic skin differs from the lighter skin types because, in these clients, dryness and irritation frequently are followed by postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. In predisposed individuals, hyperpigmentation usually develops within one to two weeks and can last for several months. However, it is important to note that pigment alterations are rare when benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, salicylic acid and glycolic acid are utilized correctly in ethnic skin. Clients with ethnic, dry, sensitive skin can avoid pigment alterations by using products that are formulated in emollient-based vehicles or with lower concentrations of the active ingredient.Doctors sell a high concentration ; which I have seen make conditions worsen, this is a condition I carefully monitor on a 2 week to 2 week basis.

Retinoids
     Acne is the most common dermatologic diagnosis, with an incidence of up to 29% among black patients. In comparative studies between black and white patients, the prevalence of acne appears to be equal.
     The first line of therapy for acne continues to be retinoid therapy. Adapalene, tretinoin and tazarotene are the most commonly used prescription retinoids for treating the condition. Retinol is available over-the-counter (OTC) and is used primarily in anti-aging formulations.
     Adapalene has been well-studied in the treatment of acne for black clients. It is best-suited for those with mild to moderate acne. Of the retinoids, it is useful especially in those with dry, sensitive skin because of its low incidence of irritation. Studies of adapalene in black clients with acne also report reductions in hyperpigmented macules—or patches of skin altered in color—and density of hyperpigmentation.
     Tretinoin also has been studied as a treatment for acne in black individuals. It is best-suited for those with moderate acne and oily skin. Similar to adapalene, tretinoin is effective not only on comedones, but also on the associated hyperpigmentation.
     Tazarotene is an excellent treatment choice for clients with moderate to severe acne. Individuals must be advised to expect dryness and scaling when beginning this medication. Skin care professionals often recommend a dosage of tazarotene be applied every other night for the first two weeks, then be increased to a nightly application in order to improve tolerability. As with all topical retinoids, among some skin types, irritation can lead to hyperpigmentation.

My approach is more gradual and longer lastly. It is also a more natural approach and aviods damage to the skin cells.

Benzoyl peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is available in both OTC and prescription formulations. It is quite effective in treating acne; however, there are a few side effects to be aware of in skin of color. Skin of color can vary in pigment from light brown to dark brown, but it is generally falls among types V–VI on the Fitzpatrick scale. Some formulations of benzoyl peroxide can leave a white or gray film, making it cosmetically less acceptable for patients with skin of color. Additionally, when significant irritation occurs, some clients can develop hyperpigmentation with benzoyl peroxide. Overall, however, benzoyl peroxide is well-tolerated and is a useful adjunct in treating acne in ethnic skin.

Weather conditions can vary greatly in the winter months and depending on where you live or where you'll be vacationing, you'll need the low- down on climate appropriate skin care.

In cold climates, dryness is our very worse enemy. Dry flaking skin, chapped cracked lips, windburn, rashes, and even blisters come with extreme cold and the artifically heated homes.

The cold climates also bring the dangers of sun exposure. If you are skiing, watch out for the sunburn (Sun reflects off water as well as the snow in the winter) -and in extreme cases-frostbite! In mild or tropical winter climates, we still experience dryness. Often, with slightly cooler weather, we become lax in sun protection. Also, buildings tend to be way over-heated even in mild climates, and artifical environments can be rough on your skin. Prevent loss of moisture and replenish what moisture you know you will lose by following your prescribed skin-care routine.
