(Mar 24, 2021))--Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), President Biden's fellow Delawarean and his closest ally in the Senate, may also be emerging as a "shadow" secretary of state, Politico writes.

He did, after all, just return from Ethiopia, where he met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to discuss the allegations of atrocities in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region.

Coons told Politico the meeting was "positive and purposeful," and Abiy did admit for the first time after meeting with Coons that Eritrean soldiers had crossed the border into Ethiopia, while also acknowledging reports that both Eritrean and Ethiopian soldiers have carried out war crimes.

It's unclear whether Coons influenced Abiy's thinking, but the timing checks out. Read more from The week (FP) »

(Nov 19, (WP))--World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has received his share of criticism from world leaders, most famously from President Trump, but now his own country of Ethiopia attacking him.

In a televised address Wednesday night, Ethiopia’s army chief of staff, Gen. Berhanu Jula, called Tedros a criminal and said he should step down from his position as director general of the WHO for seeking to procure weapons for the Tigray region, where the Ethiopian military is fighting local forces.

“He has worked in neighboring countries to condemn the war. He has worked for them to get weapons,” Berhanu said. He offered no evidence to support his accusations. Read more from WP »

Ethiopia's Nobel Prize-winning Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed vows a final strike to win the war in the Tigray region of the country.

The conflict first erupted on November 4 when Addis Ababa ordered military response to a raid on an army camp in the Tigray region. Now there are growing evidence suggesting that mass killings are happening in Ethiopia.

( Nov 19, (BBC))--With the Ethiopian government conducting a military offensive in the northern Tigray region, some people have taken the opportunity to spread misinformation online. This includes material either not directly related to the conflict or, sometimes, altered to make it look like it is.

Some have been sharing photos they say show an S-400 Russian missile defence system, claiming it is in use in the Tigray region to ward off Ethiopian air attacks. They also claim a Russian-made flamethrower system is being used.

Accompanying text reads: "This weapon you see on the picture, even Ethiopia doesn't own it as a country." "The Tigrayans have it to protect themselves from air strikes." Read more from BBC »

(Nov 19, (Washington Post))-- When the government shut down the Internet, new Twitter accounts filled the information void. In the early hours of Nov. 4, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed shut down telecommunications and deployed troops to his country’s northern Tigray region. Shortly after, a flurry of new Twitter accounts appeared and began to tweet about the situation. By the following week, new accounts were responsible for nearly a quarter of tweets about the crisis.

On the surface, this is a familiar phenomenon. Some regimes use swarms of automated accounts — known as “bots” — to sway political discourse.

However, my analysis of nearly 90,000 recent tweets, along with interviews with Ethiopia’s diaspora, revealed a different phenomenon: There are real people behind most of these new accounts. Their tweets are trying to shape international understandings of the conflict in Tigray, filling an information vacuum created by the Internet shutdown. Read more from Washington Post »
