Rising Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu on Thursday broke into the world top 20 in the latest badminton ranking following her “giant killing” exploits at last week’s China Masters tournament.

The 17-year-old Indian, who stunned the world after beating London Olympics gold medallist Li Xuerui in the quarterfinals of the China Masters, surged four places to achieve the 20th place in the BWF ranking announced on Thursday.

However, for Sindhu, the good news came on a day when she lost her pre-quarterfinal match to fourth seed Yeon Ju Bae of Korea 21-10 12-21 18-21 in Japan Open in Tokyo.

London Olympics bronze medallist and India’s top shuttler Saina Nehwal retained her fourth place in the ranking list.

The 22-year-old from Hyderabad is currently taking rest and did not play in the China Masters and Japan Open.

In men’s singles, Olympic quarterfinalist Parupalli Kashyap slipped one rung down to be placed at the 20th spot, while Ajay Jayaram jumped six places to 23rd place, following his semifinal finish at China Masters.

Senior National champion Sourabh Verma also zoomed eight places to rise to 31st spot, while RMV Gurusaidutt was placed 46th after improving nine places.

In women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta, who has decided to take a six months sabbatical from badminton, remained steady at 22nd spot on women’s doubles, while Jwala and V. Diju, who tied his nuptial knot with Dr. Soumya on September 17, dropped two places to 14th place in mixed doubles.

Trinamool Congress on Friday formally withdrew support to the UPA government and its six Ministers quit in protest against FDI in retail.

The party, which has 19 members in the Lok Sabha, gave a letter withdrawing support to the government to President Pranab Mukherjee.

Minutes earlier, six Trinamool Congress Ministers submitted their resignations to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who expressed sadness over their decision.

The Ministers — Mukul Roy, Sudip Bandhyopadhay, Sultan Ahmed, Saugata Roy, Sisir Adhikary and C. M. Jatua — went to the Prime Minister’s 7, Race Course Road residence to submit their resignations.

Straight from there, they went to Rashtrapati Bhavan for give the letter withdrawing support.

“We, the six Trinamool Congress Ministers of the Council of Ministers, including Cabinet Minister, went to the Prime Minister’s residence at 4 p.m. and we handed over to him individual letters of resignation of all the six Ministers,” said Mr. Saugata Roy.

“Now, we have come to Rashtrapati Bhavan and handed over a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, signed by Mukul Roy, chairman of the Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party, withdrawing our support to the UPA-II government... The President has accepted our letter,” he said.

Earlier, while receiving the resignation letters, the Prime Minister said he was “sad” that they were quitting, Mr. Bandhyopadhay said.

Asked whether the Trinamool leaders had demanded a floor test by the government to check its majority, Mr. Saugata Roy said, “no, we did not. Beyond what I have told you, we have not said anything extra.”

He refused to reveal what the Prime Minister told them, saying it was confidential.

Mr. Bandhyopadhyay was Minister of State for Health, Mr. Ahmed MoS for Tourism, Mr. Sougata Roy MoS for Urban Development, Mr. Adhikary MoS Rural Development and Mr. Jatua MoS Information and Broadcasting.

Industries wonder whether TANGEDCO has a contingency plan in place

With power generation from windmills steadily declining over the last few days, load shedding in southern districts has increased significantly.

While the pattern of volatile wind production is a recurring one, industries say the difference this time is that wind season is drawing to a close and power generation cannot be expected to increase again consistently to peak levels.

The escalating power cuts in the last three days have led the industries to question whether the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has a contingency plan in place as the lack of wind power will deprive the electricity grid of between 2,500 MW to 3,500 MW.

This quantum is vital for meeting the State’s peak time demand, which exceeds 11,000 MW.

Power savings

According to sources, the relief (power savings) obtained by TANGEDCO through the use of load shedding more than doubled in the past week alone. It went up to 40.569 million units this Sunday (September 16) from 16.455 million units (MU) last Sunday (September 9).

Power consumption from windmills is also varying significantly; from 64.636 MU on September 9 to 77.198 MU on September 14 before declining to 57.883 MU on September 16.

Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA) vice-president K.R. Gnanasambandan told The Hindu in Madurai on Monday that power situation had worsened significantly in the last three days with no clear answers coming from the power authorities.

Domestic consumers were complaining of erratic supply, especially during the night.

“Expedite projects”

Welcoming Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s announcement on Sunday that the government would absorb 50 per cent of TANGEDCO’s short and medium term loans accounting for Rs.9,529 crore and the sanctioning of Rs. 1,000 crore to enable it meet immediate requirements, he said these funds must be used to expedite ongoing projects and revamp existing thermal units, many of which were facing frequent accidents and equipment outages.

TANGEDCO Madurai region sources said that power supply from Central grid had declined as many units were offline.

While the most immediate option available to tide over the shortfall from windmills was short-term power purchase from private markets, which was expensive, officials said that TANGEDCO was looking to expedite ongoing projects.

It was evident that consumers of the southern districts would face a tough time over the next couple of months as TANGEDCO struggled to manage the grid.

The TANGEDCO Madurai Region comprises Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts.

As on July 31, Tamil Nadu, with a total installed capacity of 7,084.175 MW, continued to occupy the first place in India in harnessing wind energy, accounting for 40 per cent of the country’s total capacity of 17,389.31 MW.

As I already told you that interviewers want to observe you in minimum quantity of time. They will ask you question through which you can let them know how social are you. They can ask you like How do you spare your free time? What are your activities?

REUTERS - India's parliament passed just four bills in a month-long session that ended on Friday, prompting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to question the state of democracy in the Asian power struggling with an economic crisis.

Parliament in the country often dubbed the world's largest democracy had been due to debate 30 bills in the sitting known as the monsoon session.

Sensing a chance to sully the prime minister's image as an honest politician, opposition members obstructed proceedings for two weeks by shouting, punching the air and demanding he resign over a report criticising the way coalfields were allocated.

"We have just ended a wasted session of parliament," Singh told reporters outside parliament as both houses were adjourned again after just a few minutes of work.

"This is a negation of democracy. If this thought process is allowed to gain any momentum, that will be a grave violation of the norms of parliamentary politics as we have understood."

In between the shouting, unruly behaviour and general uproar, members did pass a bill against sexual discrimination, and three others. But it failed to debate the economic crisis or policies that Singh says are vital to shield India from the global slowdown and revive growth.

"Parliament should have discussed these issues - what is our economic strategy to deal with these global tensions, these global developments - but parliament was not allowed to do any of these things," Singh said.

The recess until the last few weeks of the year gives the prime minister some breathing space and the government may decree a rise in fuel prices, a move economists say is needed to keep India's fiscal deficit at a manageable level.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for more than three-quarters of the session that started on August 8. The Rajya Sabha worked less than a third of the time alloted to it and the session was further tarnished by a shoving match between two MPs over an affirmative action bill favouring lower castes.

OBSTRUCTING PARLIAMENT

In recent years, the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has frequently resorted to obstruction in parliament to denounce government policies and scandals.

"This session is likely to be remembered for the work that was not done," said the chairman of Rajya Sabha, Hamid Ansari, while adjourning the chamber until the winter session.

The Congress party-led government has been on the back foot since a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) tabled in parliament mid-session queried coal mining concessions awarded to power and steel companies without competitive bidding, potentially denying the treasury billions of dollars in revenue.

Singh, 79, won a second term in office in a 2009 election. He has denied his government did anything wrong in what has been dubbed "coalgate" by the media.

The prime minister had already been weakened by previous corruption scandals in his government. The BJP may try to keep up the momentum against the government with protests leading up to state elections later this year.

"In this political game, the economy has been the worst victim," said D.H. Pai Panandiker, head of Delhi think-tank the RPG Foundation.

Sivakasi blast: Toll rises, six arrested

Six persons were arrested today in connection with the fire at a cracker manufacturing unit at Mudhalipatti near here. With three more persons succumbing to burn injuries, the toll mounted to 39.

The arrested include those who had taken the Omshakthi Fireworks factory complex, where the fire broke out, on lease and its foreman, police said.

Those taken to custody were identified as contractors Palpandi, Srikanth, Mahendran, Pandithurai, Annadurai and foreman Udhayakumar.
Cases have been registered under Indian Explosive Act 286, 304, 338, 337, W9 (B). Search is on for the owner of the factory Murugesan, who is absconding. Meanwhile, three more persons succumbed to injuries today, taking the the toll to 39, District Revenue Officer R Raju said.
The condition of over 40 of the 70 people injured was stated to be serious in various hospitals.
Following immediate instructions from Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, a team of Cabinet Ministers rushed to the accident spot and has begun supervising relief works since yesterday.
Condoling the incident, she immediately announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each to next of kin of the deceased.
The licence of the factory was suspended only two days ago prior to the accident and the entire products had been stored in a godown against rules, according to officials. Yesterday, a blaze swept through the cracker factory complex at nearby Mudhalipatti. The factory and 48 sheds in the complex exploded in flames as the fire broke out when workers were mixing chemicals to make fancy fire crackers, trapping many in the inferno, police and fire brigade said.
Explosions could be heard across more than two square kilometres in the sleepy village as thick plumes of smoke engulfed the area with bodies burnt beyond recognition and scores of injured lay all round presenting a sight of a battle zone. Almost all those killed were workers, with some persons who rushed inside the Omshakthi factory complex to try and rescue those trapped inside also falling victim to the blaze, police said. All the victims suffered more than 80 per cent burns. The entire production had been stored in a godown against official advice, they said. Victims screamed for help and many of the injured were carried on motorbikes, cots and on the shoulders of rescuers to hospitals, according to eyewitnesses.
Officials said most workers were amateur and some trained in West Bengal were not fluent in Tamil to warn the people. Cracker units at Sivakasi, accounting for 90 per cent of firecracker production in the country, function at 'breakneck speed' ahead of the Deepavali festival, Virudhunagar District Superintendent of Police Najmul Hoda said.
A factory official said 300 persons were at work at the unit at the time of the incident.

Some of the settings mentioned below are optimized for 256k connection. If you want to calculate the optimal settings for your connection, check at the end of this tutorial. But I suggest you to read the entire tutorial for guidance on other settings.

1. Under ‘Port used for incomming connections’, enter any port number. It is best to use a port number above 10000. I use 45682.
2. Randomize port each time utorrent starts: UNCHECKED. I leave this unchecked because I have a router. If you do not have a router or a firewall, and want extra security,check this option.
3. Enable UPnP port mapping (Windows Xp or later only): UNCHECKED. I leave this unchecked because I have experienced it slowing down speeds. It is not needed if you manually port forward.
4. Add utorrent to Windows Firewall exceptions (Windows XP SP2 or later only): UNCHECKED (do this only if you have windows firewall disabled)
5. Global Maximum upload rate (kb/s): [0: unlimited]: 22 (for 256k connection)
6. Protocol Encryption: ENABLED. I would recommend everyone to enable this. This can help increase speeds with many ISPs.
7. Allow incoming Legacy Connections: CHECKED

Network Settings

1. Global Maximum Number of Connections: 130 (for 256k connection)This number should not be set too low or the number of connections made to your torrents will be limited. Setting it too high may cause too much bandwidth to be used and can cause slowdowns.
2. Maximum Number of connected peers per torrent: 70 (for 256k connection)If you see that the peers connected to a specific torrent are exactly this number, or very close, increase this number to improve speeds.

Major fire breaks out at cracker factory in Tamil Nadu, 50 feared killed

Around 50 people were feared killed and as many people injured as a massive fire broke out at Sivakasi Fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district on Wednesday.

According to police, about 100 others were missing even as the fire department struggled to douse the fire and prevent it from spreading to an adjoining magazine. Till last information, the fire was still on with explosions rocking the area. Ten fire tenders were trying to extinguish the fire.

Earlier, talking to Headlines Today over phone Virudhunagar SP Najmun Hooda had confirmed that the police had collected around 30 bodies from the spot and rushed many injured people to hospitals. He said the fire victims included several onlookers who had gathered at the spot after the fire broke out.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa was likely to visit the town on Thursday to meet the victims and their families.

This modern loft inside the Victorian Westbourne Grove Church, located in London is a project by DOS Architects. The architects renovated the top two floors of Westbourne Grove Church, a Baptist chapel initially built in 1953. The church is located in Notting Hill, London and now counts with new highly contemporary interiors where a double high space acts as the core of the loft.

This loft is simply marvelous. The beautiful contemporary design, the colors, details and materials are inspiring and create an awesome environment, definitely a great place to live ;)

The young guns came out all blazing on Sunday in coastal Australian town of Townsville to beat hosts and holders Australia by six wickets, powered by skipper Chand's unbeaten 111 in a tense final on a bouncy pitch.

Wicketkeeper Smit Patel (62*) played a perfect supporting role and their unbroken 130-run stand saw India win the U-19 cup the third time.

Sent in to bat, Australia made 225-8, with captain William Bosisto scoring 87 not out.

India started strongly but collapsed to 97-4 before Chand guided the winners to 227-4 in the 48th over

Luxology’s modo 302. It’s hard to believe that the first version of modo was introduced at the SIGGRAPH confab more than four years ago. This brilliant tool helps artist create realist objects quickly, while incorporating advanced features such as n-gons, 3D painting and edge weighting. The current version offers tool updates, more rendering and animation features, and a physical sky and sun model. Oh, and don’t forget that some of the artists working on this little indie movie called WALL’E used modo to deliver the goods this past summer!

Maya ’09. Once the crown jewel in Alias|Wavefront’s arsenal of digital creation tools, Maya is now a sibling of Autodesk’s 3ds Max. Maya ’09 launched just in time to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the popular 3D modeling, animation, rendering and effects solution. Highlights of the latest release include a new Maya Assets toolset and other new tools for managing the complexity and size of scenes, a new Render Proxy feature in mental ray, additional multi-threading work and algorithmic speedups, accelerated modeling workflow and collaborative, iterative projects and pipelines. The software has a new animation layering paradigm that provides animators with increased non-destructive flexibility, as well as an updated Render Pass toolset that offers precise control over render output and optimizes integration with Autodesk Toxik procedural compositing software. The suggested retail price is $1,995 for Maya Complete 2009 (standalone) and $4,995 for Maya Unlimited 2009 (standalone). Pixologic’s ZBrush 3.1. It’s not surprising that many of today’s 3D artists, game developers and CG model supervisors have embraced this leading software application. Toon Boom Software. Our readers had a hard time picking among the Montreal-based company’s family of various products, but one thing they all agreed on was that the Emmy-winning solutions have made 2D animation much easier and user-friendly. Whether they’re aimed at home users (Toon Boom Studio), boutique shops, freelancers and educators (Toon Boom Animate or Toon Boom Digital Pro) or traditional film/TV industry studios (Toon Boom Opus and Harmony), they’ve been hugely influential in the creation of modern animation projects in the past two decades. They even have a great model for beginners’Flip Boom, which is ideal for learning the basics. Apple wins $1 billion in patent case against Samsung

Apple won more than $1 billion in a massive US court victory over Samsung on Friday, in one of the biggest patent cases in decades - a verdict that could have huge market repercussions.

A jury in San Jose, California awarded $1.049 billion to the US tech giant, according to reports from the courtroom. But analysts said the damages could be tripled because jurors found Samsung "willfully" infringed on patents.

The jury rejected the South Korean electronics firm's counterclaims against Apple, which had claimed its iconic iPhone and iPad had been illegally copied, according to live court reports from the tech sites The Verge and Cnet.

Samsung reacted by saying the verdict was "a loss" for consumers and that Apple had "manipulated" the patent system.

The South Korean firm also said the verdict was "not the final word" in this case or other similar battles around the world.

"Today's verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer," Samsung said.

"It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies... Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer."

The decision appeared to be an overwhelming victory for Apple, but it was not immediately clear if it would halt sales of Samsung devices or affect newer models released since the case was filed.

"This is a huge, crushing win for Apple," said Brian Love, a professor of patent law at Santa Clara University.

"All of its patents were held valid, and all but one were held to be infringed by most or all accused Samsung products. Even better for the company, five of the seven patents were held to be willfully infringed by Samsung."

Love said this means that Judge Lucy Koh "now has the discretion to triple Apple's damages award, which is already a monstrous and unprecedented" sum.

The case, which is almost certain to face appeal, could shake up the sizzling market for mobile devices in which Apple has been losing ground to rivals like Samsung that use the free Android system developed by Google.

"Samsung is a proxy for both Google and the other Android vendors and better protected than most," said analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group.

"I think this will force a reset on Android products as they are reengineered to get around Apple's patents."

The jury decided the case with over 700 separate claims in less than three days of deliberations.

In one minor snag, the judge sent them back Friday after discovering they had made damage awards for two devices not found to have infringed, and the jurors then revised the award, which had been $1.051 billion, reports said.

The verdict affects patents on a range of Samsung products including some of its popular Galaxy smartphones and its Galaxy 10 tablet - devices alleged to have been copied from the iPhone and iPad.

But some devices are not affected, including the flagship Galaxy III S recently released, although they could be targeted in separate litigation.

Technology analyst Jeff Kagan said of the verdict: "This is a great day for Apple. And it will turn into a very expensive day for Samsung."

Kagan said it was not immediately clear if Samsung would be able to continue to use the technology and pay Apple for the right to do so, or if they must pull their devices and redesign them.

In any case, the verdict in the case - one of several pending in global courts - is likely to have massive repercussions in the hottest part of the technology sector, smartphones and tablets.

Even a delay in sales could endanger Samsung's position in the US market, where it is currently the top seller of smartphones.

A survey by research firm IDC showed Samsung shipped 50.2 million smartphones globally in the April-June period, while Apple sold 26 million iPhones. IDC said Samsung held 32.6 percent of the market to 16.9 percent for Apple.

Samsung had steadfastly denied the charges by Apple, claiming it developed its devices independently, and countersued in the case, seeking more than $400 million for infringement on its wireless patents.

The verdict came the same day a South Korean court ruled Apple and Samsung infringed on each other's patents on mobile devices, awarding damages to both technology giants and imposing a partial ban on product sales in South Korea.
