New Strategy - Rather than uploading digital copies of various rare tin toy catalogues to the galleries attached to this blog (a time consuming task which I will never get around to) I'm reworking them into downloadable pdf files. The files, which you can view on your own computer, can be purchased from my online shop for a nominal fee (under $5.00 / £5.00). I hope collectors find this service useful. Please do not copy or redistribute these files or there will be very little incentive to invest the time it takes to add more catalogues to the list below.

Company Name/s: Aoshi Co., Ltd. / Aoshin Shoten Co., Ltd.

Name Derivation / Meaning: Unknown. Does not appear to be a family name.

Location/s: Unknown, Japan.

Trade Mark/s: Toys are found with either the word "Aoshin" within an oval or the letters "ASC", within a diamond / lozenge (Aoshin Shoten Company). Toys occur with both the ASC trade mark and the ST (safety toy mark introduced 1971) so it's likely that the ASC trade mark is the later one.
Dates: Unknown.
Notes: In addition to the usual run of tin toys, vehicles, novelty toys etc., the company produced/distributed a number of TV and film related tin toy vehicles and other toys. These include Batman, The Monkees, James Bond 007, Thunderbirds and Green Hornet. The company seems to have moved on to the production of diecast toys in the 1970's.

Basic List And Origins Where Known.

There seems to be very little information available on Chinese tin toys. This is, initially, just an attempt to track down all the numbers and names of the toys produced in China. Many Chinese toys are original designs, others are copies or probably 're-manufactures' made using, mainly, Japanese machinery. With re-manufactures the metal pressing will be identical but usually the lithography will be entirely different.

Dates: Founded in 1932 - Dissolved in 1984.

Notes: Registered as a private company on 31st August, 1932. The company was founded by Philip Ullmann and Arthur Katz. Both Ullmann and Katz were Jewish, moving to Britain following Hitler's rise to power in 1933. Ullmann was originally managing director and then sole owner of Tipp and Co., a company set up to manufacture mechanical tin toys and located in Nuremburg, Germany.

Locations, 1933 - Winteringham Ltd., St Andrews Street, Northampton. Initially shared the workshops of Winteringham Ltd. (a model engineering company closely associated with Bassett-Lowke). Notes: Fuji Press seem to have specialised in the manufacture and/or distribution of plush covered, mostly novelty toys. There is little or nothing in the way of planes, trains, cars etc. The toys are made from tinplate pressings but are covered with material of various types. It's an ideal combination for the production of sweet and cuddly toys which when combined with various ingenious mechanisms have a very strong appeal (see also Shuco). As a result there are many furry animals playing instruments, chasing butterflies, somersaulting etc. in the Fuji output. Lithography is at a minimum with only the occasional base or accessory being tin printed in the normal way. The vast majority of Fuji Press toys are powered by clockwork motors with just the occasional item being battery operated. The company name, Fuji Press, suggests that it may have been a manufacturer rather than just a distributor. A press being the large machine used to press out toy parts from sheet metal.

Dates: Founded by Jacob Beatus in 1935 - dissolved 1953.
Notes: There has been some confusion as to the exact location of this company. Some sources maintain that the company was located on the Treforest Industrial Estate, just north of Cardiff (i.e. National Museum Of Wales - see lower part of page). Other sources, for instance a brief entry in M. Fawdry's book "British Tin Toys" gives the location as "Port, Glamorganshire". Initially I assumed that this was a misprint and should read Port Talbot (and this assumption was incorporated into previous versions of this Post). It appears that I was only partially correct. It turns out that there is an error in the text but it is the omission of only one letter 'h'. Thanks to the information below it is now clear that the company was located in Porth, South Wales.

The following extract is taken from an article ‘Penny Trains’ to Hornby Packaging by Ian Layne.

"Jacob Beatus (pronounced Bee-art-uss) was a pre-war emigre from Nazi Germany. Like his compatriot Phillip Ullman of Mettoy he set up himself in the business of making tin toys, but on a rather more modest scale. He settled in Porth, South Wales and called his firm Glamtoys after the County of Glamorgan. His specialty was toys in the cheapest range; small racing cars, clicking frogs and animals and unpowered toy trains of the smallest sizes. In short, what has become known as 'Penny toys'. Woolworths were a particular customer for these products, which were displayed and sold loose from their toy counters. In post-war years Woolworth's requirements became more sophisticated and they decided that the toys which they sold should be individually packed in printed cartons. Jacob set up his own small carton-making plant within his factory, only to find that he was making more profit from the cartons than from the contents. Toy making was abandoned and he went over exclusively to carton manufacture under the title of Jacob Beatus Ltd.

When Jacob retired my good friend Philip Mee, a fellow member of the Institute of Packaging, became managing director of Jacob Beatus Ltd. At the back of a drawer in Jacob's former desk he came across a small parcel of the original tin toy products, the sole relics of the company's former activity. They remained there for several years until Philip in turn vacated the position. Knowing my particular interest in tinprinting history he passed them over into my care. The small package which reached me contained a typical range of the Former Glamtoy products; three clicking frogs of various sizes, a small tin pistol and four items of Glamtoy train rolling stock but alas no engine! The final item sets the approximate date when toy production ceased. It is a diorama about the size of a throat lozenge tin and commemorates the present Queen's Coronation in 1953. The lid has a rectangular aperture representative of a theatre proscenium or cinema screen. Rotate the handles at either end and the procession passes by on a paper reel".

Toys may be marked either "Made In England" or "Made In Great Britain". As noted in the extract above most Glam Toys were sold without packaging. As a result, although they are very common, they are usually found in a fairly worn condition.

Name Derivation / Meaning: Dickinson Brothers - Dibro.
Location/s: 8/10 Lilly Road, Litherland, Liverpool, England.

Trade Mark/s: DIBRO (Sometimes within an oval or diamond).

Dates: Founded 1933 - Present.

Notes: Initially set up by three brothers, Ewart, Harry and David Dickinson, the company specialised in the printing of general business stationary. After WWII the stationary business was sold off and the proceeds used to buy a factory in Litherland where simple metal toys were produced for F.W. Woolworth. The company was quick to invest in plastic injection moulding equipment as well as a vacuum metallising facility. This allowed a move towards the production of plastic toys. Dibro also produced metallised plastic parts for other toy makers including Meccano Ltd. Ultimately the company was able diversify beyond the toy industry. Today it makes mainly vacuum coated products.

Notes: Early catalogues and brochures give the anglicised name of this company as S.Y. Toys Co. Ltd. At some point in the 1960's this appears to have changed to Yoneya Toys Co., Ltd. This may have occurred at the same time as the trade mark changed but I can't confirm it at this point. You will commonly find the company referred to as Yone in references and within online auction listings. As far as I know this abbreviation was only ever used on the later trade mark and never as part of a company name. Yoneya is often confused with the Yonezawa toy company because of the similar sounding names. You may also find toys from other companies that use a Y within their trade mark i.e. Sanko (Y within a circle), Yoshi (Y within a diamond) miss-labelled as Yone (Yoneya).

Boxes
Most, if not all, Marx bagatelle games seem to have been supplied in boxes.
Early boxes. Early boxes enclose the game and often have an artistic representation of the game on the upper surface.
Playline boxes. The phrase Play-Line was trade marked, in the USA, by Marx in late 1965 for their pinball/bagatelle games. Many bagatelle games were subsequently supplied in rather dull, generic boxes with an open window, displaying the actual game. They also feature the phrase Play-Line. These clearly saved the company money and made the games more profitable.

GOOGLE+ / PICASSA Gallery - When I started this blog a couple of years ago I also began adding images to what was then known as Picassa. It's a very useful gallery in that I can add in pictures of trade marks and photographs of toys as I produce them. They can be continuously rearranged as more pictures are added. If you browse these galleries you will find that, as far as possible, I've arranged companies in order of the country in which they are based. Within countries companies are arranged alphabetically, the first image being of a company's trade mark, subsequent photographs being of example toys. You can change the settings on the gallery to suit you own preferences, zoom in, show as a slide show etc. (personally I find the old Picassa view option with titles beneath each image most useful). You will find links to these galleries at the side of each blog page as well as within the entries for the many companies and toys listed within my company indexes.

Please note that at the time of this post I have split the original single gallery into three more manageable categories. These are:-

JAPAN - GREAT BRITAIN - EUROPE

This arrangement will almost certainly change in the future with a separate gallery for German manufacturers and so on. The Japan gallery, like the index of manufacturers, is the best developed at the moment but the others should grow substantially in the near future.

I love tin toys! I don't know what it is but something about them makes me want to collect them. It may be the art, the colour, the ingenuity, the humour, I'm not sure. There's certainly a lot of nostalgia involved. If you've found your way to this blog it's likely that you feel the same way.
