This has been a project that is very close to me, because when I first started photographing the ocean, the mental image that I had of the ocean was a simple, boring one. but after that I started to look with a little bit more awareness and the ocean became a wonderful image, visually, and also there was a process of elimination, I have been taking photos in the beach for quite a long time now, there are lot of things that happen in the beach, morning poojas, workouts, walks, talks, and there are several people who visit the beach, lookers, kissers, shitters, joggers, this and that. I had to leave them all out of the frame, I concerned myself only with the sky, the water and the sand, and ofcourse the beautiful line thats there at the horizon.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 256px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JoMYjN9r0WQ/S8agBpmxStI/AAAAAAAAF-8/zURfHxbtMb8/s400/beach+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460227548442086098" />

This series of photographs is a meditation on the ocean, the shifting colors, the moods it displays and imaginary line that splits the water from the skies. For almost a year now I have photographed the ocean from the beach at different parts of the day, concentrating on the three layers before me, the sand, the water, and the sky. The horizon line fascinates me; the beach is one of the very few places where one can look as far as the eye can go without buildings, trees, or pretty much anything blocking the view. And the line at the horizon is a delightful destination. I have used an instant film camera, which I felt expresses the uniqueness of each moment felt, the fragility of an instant.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 258px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JoMYjN9r0WQ/S8af3Q-uT-I/AAAAAAAAF-0/icLefK6Q7Yw/s400/beach1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460227370032975842" />

New York, New York

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 36px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JoMYjN9r0WQ/S8aA5IkprdI/AAAAAAAAF-k/DcT-MtA_kZc/s400/Untitled-1+web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460193317275413970" />

Newyork is like Varanasi, very very special.

Untitled for now

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 265px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JoMYjN9r0WQ/SqvU3Z3rA4I/AAAAAAAAF2Y/wk5SVspy8kI/s400/cloisters.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380628228126475138" />

my fingers have been hovering in front of the computer keyboard, waiting for the words to flow..

Cairo Impressions

I am now sitting in a internet bistro opposite the egyptian museum. in the last few day I was here, I have seen so much and I hope I remember most of the impressions of this place, when I get back to Chennai, where I will continue this post.
today was filled with adventure in the desert. The Dashur pyramid is magnificant. after looking at the collection at the Egyptian museum, I imagine what this civilization would have been like at its prime.
I don't want to write anything more now, I have only a few days left here and I want to use it. I wanted to do portraits of interesting women who are going after their dreams, who have traveled miles and miles and faced a lot of hardships to go after what they want.
Erina and Arisa are such people who are doing amazing things in their lives, I am inspired by them, and I wanted to showcase their photos that I have done. the photos are full of movement and energy.
And as a variation for this project I choose to photograph more or less " head shots" of more interesting women, it was quite challenging because I have only their face to work with and its very still without any movement, but the picture should still be able to convey something. the Portrait of Ingrid is one such photograph.<br clear="all" It has been quite some time since I have seen it, and I am still thinking about it.

Arisa Kasai is a photographer based in Tokyo,Japan. she has done a photo documentary of a Japanese women who has Cancer, but these photographs are not about pathos, neither do they beg for people's sympathy, it does not have filmy drama images, it does not have the images one usually associates with cancer patients or people with illness in general, in fact there is no indication that the person photographed has cancer, everything slowly unravels and acquires momentum as the pages turn the intensity of the images is hard to handle. Arisa kasai presents a new way of seeing, which will make many photographers question their own ways of seeing.

I had a strange feeling when I was looking at the photographs. The same feeling I get when I look at a Van Gogh or when I listen to Mozart, I enjoy looking at a Vangogh but at the same time I am depressed that I did not do anything as intense or as worthwhile as that.

I hope Arisa Kasai's book comes out soon, since the book is probably the best way to exhibit these set of pictures, they have a feeling of intimacy that would be lost in an exhibition hall or in an online gallery. I do wish we could see some of this wonderful photographers work online. she as of now maintains a very low profile online.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" <![endif]-->
Engulfed – is the word that comes to my mind when I think about the performance last evening. I am not a dancer, I don’t know much about dance, I have watched quite a number of performances though. But the one I watched yesterday evening is something special.

The month of December is probably the best month in Chennai, the day is not so hot and the night is pleasantly cold, and the auditorium in the city fills with Music and Dance, everyday almost around the clock you can go to any performance halls in the city and it will be full of activity. The sheer volume of performances that happen this month is incredible.

Last year around this time, I was swept off my feet by the most beautiful and enchanting performance I have ever seen. Nrityagram an odissi dance group from Banglore came to Kalakshetra and I became their fan. Ever since then I wanted to see them perform again.

And yesterday they came to this city, to Krishna Gana Sabha, to do magic yet again. And this time, I got permission to photograph the event, without a tripod it was little difficult. But I am not complaining.

How exciting to see Bijayini Satapti perform again, other performances I can watch and enjoy, but my level of participation is somewhat diminished, I can feel I am watching a performance nothing more than that. But to watch Bijayini dance is something so wonderful that it’s hard to describe, I don’t feel I am watching a performance anymore, the edges begin to fade, the crowd disappears, and everything vanishes except Bijayini and the spell the casts’ sets me in a trance. There is some sort of playful innocence in her smile, dancers usually “wear a smile” - even though what they are doing is physically taxing and requires hours and hours of practice and discipline, they smile when they perform- sometimes this smile looks mechanical because of the amount of strain that the dancer feels when they perform, but Bijayini’s smile plucks at my heart.

She is beautiful and displays a wide variety of expressions and all of them excite the senses. When she is performing all my senses surrender to her.

Yesterday’s evening’s performance was a little slow compared to the last year’s one, they had only one “allegro” item, but it in no way diminishes the beauty.

I am still reeling from the effects, If Nirtyagram is performing with Bijayini in it and if I have enough money, I will follow them wherever they go to watch them dance.

9009

now its 9009

hello green fairy

will say hello to green fairy soon, and then will write about it.
salut "La Fée Verte"

Three crows and a sleepy Dog

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" The blog has news and notes from the campaign to give the kids the power of Global Knowledge..

This week’s featured fan photo comes from Joel Lazarus. While traveling in southern India’s state of Tamil Nadu in the town of Pondicherry, Joel came upon a family sitting outside of a local shop. Inspired by their joy and the colorful fabrics of the mother’s saree, Joel took this digital picture and immediately showed it to the family. Modern technology enables us to share pictures with one another instantly and, in that way, helps establish intimate personal connections. Joel writes, “I don't know what their names are, or what they do, or why they were there, but we were part of a photo-taking ritual; taking a photo of a person and showing the photograph to the person, is a ritual that bonds people in a different way.”

Sometimes photography celebrates the uniqueness of people and places inside of borders, and other times it blurs these borders, reminding us of a deeper universal connection.

Joel continues, “No matter where somebody comes from, or what somebody does or how much money they have, there is something beautiful in all of us and on magical occasions we {can} see the beauty, and it’s a great feeling. On such instances, I feel that we are all one--afterall.”

Thanks Joel for this great shot and your inspiring words! Share your global perspective with us by uploading your pictures on the My Wonderful World Facebook page; we’d love to feature your shot on the next Featured Fan Photo.

**Want to read more about modernizing Indian cities like Pondicherry?
