UFC's return to Brazil on Jan. 19 will be UFC on FX 7

2012-11-03T21:45:00.001-04:00

A month after taking its FX road show to Australia for the second time, the UFC and the cable network will head to South America.

The just-announced UFC return to Brazil in January, made official by the promotion early Saturday, officially will be its seventh card on FX. Sources close to the promotion on Saturday confirmed the broadcast plans to MMAjunkie.com(www.mmajunkie.com).

"UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping" (or numbered, UFC on FX 7) will take place Jan. 19 with a four-fight main card and eight fights on the prelims.

Middleweights Vitor Belfort (21-10 MMA, 10-6 UFC) and Michael Bisping (23-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC) will headline the card, with a co-feature between C.B. Dollaway (12-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and Daniel Sarafian (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Also on the main card are heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga (13-6 MMA, 8-5 UFC) and Ben Rothwell (32-8 MMA, 2-2 UFC), plus a lightweight bout between Thiago Tavares (17-4-1 MMA, 7-4-1 UFC) and Khabib Nurmagomedov (18-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC).

As has been customary for the UFC's cards in Brazil, a Brazilian fighter is featured in each of the 12 fights on the card.

Although a city and venue have not yet been announced, published reports have indicated the UFC is likely to head to its third different city in the South American country – like Sao Paulo. The promotion had hoped to hold UFC 147 there earlier this year in a soccer stadium, but those plans fell through.

But regardless of the location, the card will be the UFC's fifth in Brazil in about 17 months, a sure sign of the promotion's commitment to continue to bring live events to what most consider the birthplace of MMA. It will, however, be the first non-pay-per-view card for the UFC in Brazil after numbered events for UFC 134, 142, 147 and 153, which took place just this past month in Rio de Janeiro.

The latest card for the UFC's return to Brazil includes:

MAIN CARD

Vitor Belfort vs. Michael Bisping
C.B. Dollaway vs. Daniel Sarafian
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Ben Rothwell
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Thiago Tavares

PRELIMINARY CARD

Godofredo Castro vs. Milton Vieira
Andrew Craig vs. Ronny Markes
Nik Lentz vs. Diego Nunes
Edson Barboza vs. Justin Salas
Michael Kuiper vs. Thiago Perpetuo
Yuri Alcantara vs. George Roop
Roger Hollett vs. Wagner Prado
Francisco Trinaldo vs. C.J. Keith

Dave Bautista will face Vince Lucero in MMA debut

2012-10-01T22:52:00.001-04:00

Former pro wrestling headliner Dave Bautista went from being slated to fight a series of men, who like him, had no pro fights. Instead, he ended up at the last minute with a 13-year-veteran with 45 bouts.
_________________________

Former World Wrestling Entertainment headliner Dave Bautista has a new official opponent just five days before his scheduled MMA debut on pay-per-view.

The 43-year-old former bodybuilder and WrestleMania headliner will face a legitimate experienced fighter, Vince Lucero (22-22-1) at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Given the name "Real Pain," the show will air nationally in the U.S. on DirecTV pay-per-view, and stream for $29.95 worldwide at www.bautistamma.com
The search for an opponent of Bautista, better known as "The Animal" Batista by pro wrestling fans over the past decade, took a number of twists and turns in the past few days.

Rashid Evans, not to be confused to Rashad Evans, a 230-pound heavyweight with a number of amateur fights, but no professional bouts, had been scheduled and announced for weeks, even though he wasn't training and was in jail at one point when being promoted. However, Evans was able to get a release to get in some training for the fight, until a probation violation after being pulled over by police and not having a valid license, landed him back in jail.

Bruno McKee, a New Jersey based fighter who had fought at both heavyweight and super heavyweight, with three amateur bouts and no professional experience, was slated as the replacement. But late last week, McKee pulled out of the fight, citing a lack of time to prepare.

Promoters were scrambling. Sources said that a number of inexperienced heavyweights in the Massachusetts area were asked as late as the weekend about taking the fight, but all turned it down, due to a lack of training time.
Promoters on Monday night announced Lucero, 40, as Bautista's new opponent. The bulky fighter who cuts to make the 265-pound top limit of the heavyweight division, has fought twice this year on Rage in the Cage show. His most recent fight was a win on April 13 over Mike Martinez via split decision.

Lucero, in 2007 was a member of the International Fight League's San Jose Razorclaws. He trained under Frank Shamrock, but was stopped in 1:55 by Ken Shamrock's heavyweight Roy Nelson, during the battle of the brothers show in Oakland. He was then cut by the team.

Lucero has been fighting for 13 years. The closest thing to a notable win would have been a 2004 win over future Ultimate Fighter participant Josh Haynes.

Besides Nelson, he has lost to a number of name fightes including Christian Wellisch, Travis Fulton, Justin Eilers, Soa Palelei, Ruben "Warpath" Villareal, Eric Pele, Brad Imes Devin Cole, Lavar Johnson, Tim Sylvia and Tim Hague.

Bautista was one of the biggest stars in the pro wrestling world from 2003 to 2010, due to his impressive look at 6-foot-3 and weighing between 280 and 310 pounds of muscle. He's cut down on the size significantly and has for years wanted to do MMA, with an attitude very similar to Herschel Walker. He has no illusions of championships, but has trained seriously with Cesar Gracie's team and, of late, has admitted taken his lumps in training from Stephan Bonnar.

He left pro wrestling in 2010, saying he wasn't having fun and didn't like the direction the business was going. Bautista as a pro wrestler was a significantly bigger drawing card than Brock Lesnar or Ken Shamrock. He has since done a number of action and martial arts movies, including working with UFC fighter Cung Le. He talked about doing MMA as soon as he was free from his WWE contract. Negotiations for a fight in Strikeforce, and on Showtime, fell through when Zuffa purchased the organization and had no interest in using him.

Dana White on UFC 153 injuries: 'It’s part of the business and we have to deal with it'

2012-09-19T10:49:00.002-04:00

t hasn't been an easy month for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White.

From dealing with the UFC 151 fiasco in which the promotion was forced to, for the first time ever, pull the plugon the highly-anticipated pay-per-view (PPV) event, and now having to deal with another first, losing the main event and co-main event of UFC 153, (on the same day) which is set to go down on Oct. 13, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo was forced to bow out of his title fight against Frankie Edgar due to a bum foot after being hit by a car weeks before, while Quinton Jackson pulled out of his light heavyweightscrap against Glover Teixeira, which was set to serve as the evening's co-main event, due to an elbow injury.

As White told Yahoo! Sports, "It's part of the business."

"Jose Aldo gets hit by a car, screwed up his foot, he's hurt, he's out. Rampage Jackson messes up his elbow, he's hurt, he's out. The main event and the co-main event on the same day within an hour of each other in two different continents. I don't know, I gotta fix it now. You know, I gotta fix it. I have time to fix this one. And, you know, we will figure something out. Frankie Edgar is devastated right now man. He's devastated. He comes off that controversial loss in his last fight, gets another title shot, steps up to the plate, starts investing in another camp and spending money to train again and now Aldo's hurt. This kid can't catch a break either. Everybody was pumped up for Frankie vs. Aldo and for Glover vs. Rampage. So, it's a tough one man, its part of the business. It is what it is and we have to deal with it."

No word on who exactly White and the ZUFFA matchmakers have reached out to in attempts to save this card. One thing is for certain, with plenty of time to work with, UFC 153 will not suffer the same fate as UFC 151.

More on the UFC 153 shake-up right here.

UFC 152: Jones vs Belfort Extended Preview

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Vs. Dave Herman Booked For UFC 153 On Oct. 13 In Rio

2012-09-12T22:00:00.000-04:00

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently suffered a huge hit to its upcoming UFC 153 pay-per-view (PPV) event scheduled for Oct. 13, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but it looks like it's starting to rebuild its main card.

Yesterday (Sept. 11) news broke that Jose Aldo andQuinton Jackson had both been injured and had to withdraw from their respective bouts on the card. They were in the co main and main events, respectively.

Now, with a severely weakened card, the UFC will have to put together some more convincing fights just to make it worth watching. It looks like it's taken its first step towards that, with Brazilian mixed martial arts (MMA) icon Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira now being set to fight heavyweightpersonality Dave Herman.

MMA Fighting has the details, after the jump.

A day after the card lost its main event and co-main event, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Dave Herman have verbally agreed to meet in a heavyweight bout on the Oct. 13 card in Rio de Janeiro, according to sources close to the event. The news was first reported by journalist Guilherme Cruz of Tatame.com.

Nogueira hasn't fought since a gruesome submission loss to Frank Mir at UFC 140 in December 2011. "Minotauro" looked good at the start, but unfortunately was defeated in an amazing feat of strength, technique, and heart by Mir.

Herman won his UFC debut against Jon Olav Einamo at UFC 131, but has lost his last two bouts to Stefan Struve and Roy Nelson, respectively. He is known for an indifferent attitude towards training, and he's been criticized as not living up to his potential because of it.

However, Herman is certainly an interesting personality, but he'll be fighting for relevance (and possibly his job) here.

The bout is not expected to headline UFC 153, which will take place on October 13 at the HSBC Arena. A headlining bout still remains a mystery after Jose Aldo needed to pull out of his featherweight title fight againstFrankie Edgar thanks to a bum foot.
