The train, carrying journalists and VIPs, arrived at St Pancras, instead of Waterloo, for the first time. It took two hours, three minutes, 39 seconds.

The 68-mile line is expected to help cut times on the entire route by 20 minutes to two hours, 15 minutes when it opens to the public on 14 November.

Reuters - 33 minutes ago LONDON (Reuters) - Eurostar plans to set a Paris to London speed record on Tuesday with its first ever train on the UK's long-awaited high speed track.

The 9:44 a.m. service from Paris Gare du Nord will take its inaugural run down 109 kilometres (about 68 miles) of British track, known as High Speed 1, arriving for the first time in London's St Pancras International station rather than Waterloo.

The journey time will be cut from the usual 2 hours 35 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes on the new route.

"But we're hoping to do it even quicker on that first run," said a spokesman.

Eurostar carried its first passengers in 1994 after the delayed opening of the $15 billion (7.4 billion pounds) Channel Tunnel.

But while trains have cruised swiftly across France on high speed track at speeds of up to 186 miles (300 km) per hour, they have been forced to throttle back on the British side where they mingle with commuter services heading in and out of London.

What does 'From' £39 mean? Eurostar train fares work like air fares. Book early on an off-peak train and your ticket may cost £39, but book a popular date or time or book closer to the day of travel, and it might cost £50, £73, £89, anything up to £179 full price. The fares shown without a 'from' do not increase like this, and are what you'll pay as long as there are seats left. '£260 or £329' means the price could be either £260 or £329 depending on availability.

One-way fares on Eurostar...

Before June 2009 there was a problem with one-way fares on Eurostar, as a one-way ticket from London to Paris was usually more expensive than a return! But in June 2009 Eurostar introduced sensible one-way fares right across their price range, in other words, one-way fares that are always cheaper than the equivalent return. So the problem should now have been solved.

Open-jaw journeys (e.g. outward train from London to Paris, back from Brussels to London)...

There are no fares for 'open jaw' return journeys, for example using an outward train from London to Paris but returning from Brussels to London. This is a shame as these would be useful for circular journeys or travel to (for example) Germany or Austria where some connections are best via Paris, others via Brussels. So either travel out and back via the same city, or buy two one-way tickets.

Avignon, written as Avennio or Avenio in the ancient texts and inscriptions, takes its name from the Avennius clan. Founded by the Gallic tribe of the Cavares or Cavari, it became the centre of an important Phocaean colony from Massilia (present Marseilles).
