Tips from a few seasoned surfcasters had led me there. “The nastier, the better,” one had insisted. It didn’t get much nastier than that night, yet I was 40 minutes into casting and not a single lure I’d tried had been able to swim right in the big swell and fierce crosswind. It was pitch black, the waves were huge, and I was going on blind faith that some stripers were out there feeding in that mess. I just needed a way to get a lure in front of them.

I clicked on my light and went picking through my plug bag. Deep in one of the tubes, I saw a glimpse of chartreuse. I’d almost forgotten! Before I’d left my truck, I made one last-minute addition to the plug bag, a “pre-loaded” Super Strike Super “N” Fish. This plug has the same body as the original Super “N” Fish models, but it has a heavier lead insert.

The 5 ¼-inch plug weighs almost 2 ounces, and the slender, aerodynamic shape cut right through the wind. After I reeled up the slack created by the big bow in the line, a bass hammered the plug.

For all their simplicity in appearance, there is a lot of thinking that goes into the design of a needlefish plug, and this is especially true of the Super “N” Fish. Unlike a number of needlefish designs on the market right now, the Super “N” Fish is tapered at both ends.

Don Musso, founder of Super Strike Lures, landed on this needlefish design in 1981 when a friend of his, Charlie Ruger, was fishing Nantucket and saw a lot of fish being taken on needlefish plugs. Don set out to make a needlefish, but when he flipped through some old fishing magazines, he didn’t like the design of the needlefish he saw.

Don wanted a needle that did a better job matching slender baitfish in all respects. An outing in 1966 taught him just how picky stripers can be, and he wanted to make sure he made a plug that worked, even when stripers were tuned in on small, slim baitfish.

“We were catching all tinker mackerel, all around six inches, and almost as soon as we could catch the mackerel and send it back out on a hook, we were catching stripers. Well I caught a tinker mackerel about twelve inches and thought, ‘what the heck?’ I rigged it up and sent it out. I sat there with that bait while the guy on my left and the guy on my right kept catching bass, twenty-plus pounders, on the six-inch mackerel. Those fish just didn’t want to eat anything else.”

By tapering the back end of the Super “N” Fish, Don created a plug that sent out very slight vibrations, similar to those sent out by sand eels, spearing or actual needlefish.

The needles were a fast hit among surfcasters, and a number of impressive striped bass were landed on them, none more impressive than a 64-pound, 12-ounce striper caught by Tom Rinaldi on a 6¾-inch Super “N” Fish.

The first runs of needles were made of wood, but when Super Strike made the switch from making wooden plugs to making plastic plugs in 1984, the Super “N” Fish was the first Super Strike plug to be made out of plastic.

The plastic Super “N” Fish was made with a hollow body cavity, and, surfcasters being the tinkerers that they are, some anglers began “loading” the plugs. Well-known surfcaster Steve Campo began loading the plug so he could cast it through the wind in the Block Island surf in the 1980s. More recently, surfcasting writer and author DJ Muller began loading up his Super “N” Fish to fit a variety of locations and conditions from New Jersey to New England.

Steve Musso, who took the reins at Super Strike lures from his father in 1992, took notice of the success that Muller and other anglers were having with the loaded needles and decided to put a line of heavier needlefish into production.

“I wanted to make a needlefish that guys could fish when it was too windy or the current was too strong to fish regular needlefish.”

Mission accomplished. Steve added weight to all three Super “N” Fish sizes, the 5 ¼-, 6 ¾- and 7 ¼-inch models. The loaded plugs weigh 1.7, 2.3 and 3 ounces, respectively. Steve also added a dressed siwash hook on the back of the plug that, along with the red-colored eyes, will help anglers differentiate between the pre-loaded needles and the original needles.

The added weight is centrally located in the Super “N” Fish. “When most guys load the plug, they end up putting the weight in the rear chamber,” Steve said. “That makes the plug sink tail first, and I wanted to avoid that. I placed the weight in the plug centrally, so it sinks level.”

The plug has a very slight wiggle on the retrieve that adds to its appeal. My first experience with the pre-loaded Super “N” Fish was in an October nor’easter, when most of my other lures were getting blown back in my face. I had a pair of 3-ounce Super Strike needles, and I clipped on a black one and let it fly. The plug flew like a dart into the gale, sank quickly and began to sweep with the current. Without going into details, the heavy Super “N” Fish put a 30-pound fish on the rocks when no other plug in my bag could.

Innovative thinking by Don Musso made this plug legendary in 80s, and that same innovative thinking by Steve is keeping these lures at the top of the list for surfcasters throughout the Northeast more than 30 years later.

For More Information On Needlefish Lures:

• Noteworthy Needlefish
• The New England Fall Run Plug Bag
• The New York & New Jersey Fall Run Plug Bag

The post Lure of The Month: Super “N” Fish appeared first on On The Water.

from bass fishing http://ift.tt/1WLdDj2 via smallmouth bass fishing tips
from Tumblr http://ift.tt/1QXdo0w
noreply@blogger.com (Waylon P. There are many great surf-fishing locations in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. All of these premier locales will produce stripers throughout the fishing season, but some places just seem to attract larger bass, year after year. Maybe you’ve had your fill of schoolies and smaller bass and want to try some places this fall where you have a better chance for a trophy. Here are five of the best spots I know where you just may be able to accomplish that task. Over the past 10 seasons or so, I have landed at least one 40-pound striper in each of these spots, and two have yielded several forties for me in the course of one season.

• Gooseberry Island, “The Knob”, in Westport, Massachusetts
• Narrow River Inlet in Narragansett, Rhode Island
• The Mussel Bed in Point Judith Harbor of Refuge, Narragansett, Rhode Island
• The Short Wall, also in Point Judith Harbor of Refuge in Narragansett
• Napatree Point in Westerly, Rhode Island

Gooseberry Island – “The Knob”

Surf casting Gooseberry Island is an experience. As previously noted, this spot is a very difficult location to fish, but it is the best of the bunch, and if I wanted a 50, I would concentrate my efforts here. Most of the “island,” which is connected to the end of Westport’s Horseneck Beach by a short causeway, is fairly easy to fish, and you will probably do O.K. almost anywhere along its shore. But the really great spot is out at the “The Knob.” This section of Gooseberry Island is a small clump of large rocks located off the southeast corner. To get to these rocks, a surfcaster must traverse a bar of rock and sand for approximately 200 yards, in darkness, an hour and a half after high water, in a ripping east to west tide. Add a southwest wind and some white water, and a surfcaster will wonder if a big fish is really worth it. Therefore, chest-high waders, a good waterproof rain top, wader belt, neck light and even a wading staff are absolutely necessary equipment if you want to arrive at The Knob in one piece. A full wet suit makes things a lot easier.

Once out on the rocks of The Knob, cast to the east, southeast and south of the large boulders during the balance of the dropping tide. Stay until almost low water as the fish do show up at times with about an hour and a half left of the tide. By the way, the walk back across the bar at low water is much easier. The entire bar is in mostly ankle-deep water at that stage of the tide.

To get to Gooseberry Island, follow Route 195 to Route 88 (Horseneck Beach). Follow Route 88 southeast along the beach; at the end of the beach turn right and park at the first unpaved parking lot on the left before the causeway. This is a great spot in the fall and should be fished until Thanksgiving. New moon periods are best or during a full moon if it’s cloudy, from one and a half hours after high tide (on Newport) until one hour before dead low. Fish live eels or 9-inch rigged Slug-Gos here when the wind blows southwest. If the wind is east, stay home.

Narrow River Inlet

The Narrow River Inlet is the most consistent surf-fishing location in Rhode Island in my opinion, a great spot to catch striped bass all season long. There are usually a few stripers in this outflow even when all other spots are dead. Big bass frequent this river at times, particularly in the late spring, early summer and again in the fall.

The best surf casting for large fish usually occurs in late October into the first week of November. I have caught all of my forties except one in that time period. The Narrow River mouth fishes best during the dropping tide, particularly the last few hours. Be sure to take into account a 2½- to 3-hour lag after dead low on the outside before the river flow reverses, so add that to low tide at the Newport tide calculation.

Some of the best fishing at the river mouth comes at the start of the incoming flow. Most surfcasters would be surprised at the size and amount of really big bass that come into the river mouth at this stage. But fishing the dropping tide is best. Swimming plugs work best when the tide is humping, with the 7-inch Red Fin (weighted with 10ccs of water) the absolute best artificial for this spot. As the flow slows, you can’t beat a live or rigged eel or a 9-inch weighted and rigged Slug-Go.

Park at the north lot of the Narragansett Town Beach just off Route 1, and walk east for about 10 minutes or so to the mouth of the Narrow River. This spot can be fantastic in stormy conditions with a northeast or southeast wind; in fact, I think it is one of the only places to fish in really rough weather. Under normal weather conditions, a southwest or southeast breeze is best. Fish the few days on either side and during a new moon or full moon period if the weather is cloudy. Mid-May to mid-June, and mid-September through mid-November are the prime times.

Use swimming plugs if the tide is running hard, and use eels, live or rigged, or big Slug-Gos as the tide slows.

The Mussel Bed

The Mussel Bed is located in the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge. To the untrained eye, this spot doesn’t appear to be a location that would attract big fish. However, it is a real sleeper and has given up very large stripers over the years. A good friend of mine, John Kowaleski, caught a 59-pounder there one June, and I had two 40-pounders one night in August 1996.

This area is easy to find and fish. Locate an A-frame house on the beach and look for white water to the east. It is the only white water located in the normally calm Harbor of Refuge. Station yourself on the right or west of the bar and white water. Wade out to about waist deep, and fan your casts over and along the bar.

June is the best month to fish here; October and November are good, too, although the action is somewhat inconsistent. I haven’t seen a lot of difference in success at this spot related to phases of the moon, but as with everywhere else, dark nights are always better than bright ones. Fish from a half an hour before high tide to three hours after. Northeast, northwest, or light southwest and southeast winds produce good fishing, but if it has been blowing hard from the south, this area tends to weed up.

Live eels are tops here, although I have done well with 9-inch Slug-Gos over the last three seasons. My next choice would be needlefish plugs, particularly if it’s blowing and there is a lot of white water on the bar.

To get to this side of the Harbor of Refuge, follow Route 108 South to Sand Hill Cove Road. Turn right onto Sand Hill Cove Road, then left onto Stanton Avenue. Park in the small dirt lot next to the “million dollar” house on the right. Although this small parking area is easy to find, there is only room for a couple of vehicles.

Short Wall Breakwater

This spot is also located in the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge and is renowned for producing large fish. Old-time sharpie Ray Henneky had a thousand-pound night here a long time ago. Yes! A thousand pounds of striped bass from the surf! Today, you might not do as well as Ray, but you will have a very good shot at a big fish or two.

There are two ways to fish the Short Wall. The tide screams through the two jetties flanking the entrance to Great Salt Pond, and the best time to fish the channel is during the dropping tide. The first method involves fishing while the water is running hard. Because the current is so strong, fairly heavy lures must be employed to reach the bass, which stay close to structure on the bottom. The best way to do this is with bucktail jigs with soft plastic twister tails, and you may have to go up to four ounces depending on how hard the tide is running. But bring along a good assortment because, as the current slows, you can get away with 1- or 2-ounce jigs. To get in the strike zone, cast your lure upcurrent, let it sink to the bottom, and start reeling fast enough to eliminate any slack in the line as you feel the jig hit. Reel 10 or so cranks, then free-spool the lure to the bottom again. Repeat this method until the jig is down-tide and the bottom can no longer be reached. Reel jig in and repeat. This is called the drop-back method and is an extremely effective way to catch stripers here or in any strong-current situation. It takes some practice but is well worth it. Work the entire wall with this method.

You can also fish live eels along the Short Wall as the water slows toward the bottom of the tide. For this, position yourself near the marker at the end of the wall where the wall takes a slight curve. Cast your eel into the channel, letting it sink a bit before starting your retrieve. Be sure to twist on a ¾-ounce rubbercore sinker about 12 to 18 inches ahead of your eel; this will keep the eel from rising to the surface as you reel in and can be the difference between a skunking and a good night.

Fish the Short Wall jetty this way from one hour before dead low through about one hour of incoming. The first hour of incoming can be the best time for big fish.

To reach this spot, follow Route 108 south to Galilee Escape Route. Follow this road to the intersection, and turn left onto Great Island Road. Next to George’s Restaurant you’ll find a parking lot by the channel.

Fish here in June and early July. The action picks up again in September and lasts until mid-November. This is a spot for a monster bass. But it is often overlooked because it is tough to fish and most don’t know about rubbercore sinker and eel rigs or how to drop-back bucktails. This is also a spot where one can smoke the fish in a northeast gale, particularly in the fall.

Napatree Point

Napatree Point is located in the Watch Hill section of Westerly, Rhode Island, and is another consistent surf spot. My logs indicate I have never been skunked here. It is also a great late-season spot producing big bass through mid-November. There is only one drawback – it takes about 20 to 25 minutes of traversing soft sand to reach the prime area at the end of the point. This discourages a lot of surfcasters as hoofing that distance in waders is not a pleasant experience. But rest assured, the long walk is usually well worth it.

I like to fish Napatree from mid-May until mid-November. Midsummer can be great, with enough 20-pound fish to rationalize the walk. June and October through November are best, though, for better fish, and you will surely work up a sweat if you decide to walk that trophy back to your car!

The very end of Napatree is the best. You can fish along the beach on the way out, but that usually produces only schoolies. Fish the rocks around the south and west parts of the point, and then move around the corner – you’ll be facing northwest – to another prime spot. Keep an eye out for a string of large boulders awash a fair distance offshore and perpendicular to the point. The water between these rocks and the shore is probably the best spot at the point; I know of at least one 50 and several 40s that have come from this area in the last five years. My best was 42 pounds, five years ago in late October. The dropping tide is best, and I have done well at night on either side of the new moon, but frankly, in the late fall the fishing can be good almost anytime, and I guarantee that you won’t have to deal with crowds. Live eels are tops, but I have taken 40-pounders here in recent years on rigged 9-inch Slug-Gos. The water can weed up if a strong southwest or southeast breeze has been blowing, but these winds also push in the bass.

Parking in Watch Hill is difficult if not impossible in the summer, but that’s not when the best fishing occurs anyway. You should be able to park without any problem in the late fall. Follow Route 1A in Westerly toward Watch Hill. As you enter the downtown area, you will see a large parking lot with stores on one side and the Watch Hill Yacht Club on the other, right on the harbor. Drive to the far end of this parking lot and park near the private beach club, then begin the marathon walk down the beach to the point.

Lastly, remember you may only have one shot at a trophy. Fall fishing at the spots I’ve outlined demand relatively heavy tackle that is in tip-top shape. Big bass will find rocks and quickly take advantage of any weak links in your gear. If you have been using the same line since the spring, change it! Use shock leaders of heavy monofilament or fluorocarbon, and double-check your knots. Hooks should be new and razor sharp – check them frequently if you’re fishing around rocks, and touch them up with a sharpener whenever they seem to be getting the least bit dull. Reel drags must be smooth to handle the long runs of a big bass fighting to stay alive. Attention to tackle is important – as important as knowing where to fish – if you want to succeed in landing the striped bass of your life.

The post 5 Spots For A Fall 40 appeared first on On The Water.

from bass fishing http://ift.tt/1WLdFr1 via smallmouth bass fishing tips
from Tumblr http://ift.tt/1FVeZTT
noreply@blogger.com (Waylon P.
