I spotted this super cute gray desk at Ikea over the weekend. I kinda fell in love. . . and then found out that the legs also come in hot pink! (Ikea calls them red, but they are most certainly hot pink)

I am sort of obsessed with the thought of hosting a wine & cheese night. It really is one of them easiest types of dinner parties to throw. All you need is good cheeses, accompaniments, some charcuterie, a couple of bottles of wine and some rustic serving pieces. Of course you could always go with modern pieces, but the wine & cheese night in my head is totally rustic chic. The best part about this kind of dinner party is that there doesn't have to be any cooking, the only pre-party prep required is setting the table and displaying your cheeses.

Another reason I want to host a wine & cheese party is because I will look for any excuse to use the word charcuterie. Charcuterie. . . seriously, it is like my favorite word.

DIY: Honeycomb Cupcake

I have been inspired by all the cute honeycomb crafts that Studio DIY has been making, so I decided to give it a go and make myself a honeycomb cupcake. . . and you can too.

Supplies:

at least two different colored honeycomb balls (or honeycomb paper)
scissors
stapler
pen
cardstock
glue

Optional:

cardstock in multiple colors
1 inch round paper punch

The first thing you want to do is cut off the top and bottom of your flat honeycomb balls.

Decide which one of your colors you want to be the bottom to the top of your cupcake. Take the bottom and cut out a rectangle that is tapered slightly a long one side. Run a row of staples along what will be the inside of your cupcake bottom.

Now it is time to cut the top. Use your cupcake bottom to help determine the size and shape of your cupcake top. Just free hand the top the shape of the top of the cupcake making sure you have a very flat bottom. Run a row of staples along what will be the inside of your cupcake top.

It's time to connect your two pieces. Take your pieces of plain cardstock and do a simple free hand cut in shape that is slightly smaller than the two of your combined cupcake pieces.

Glue your card stock pieces on to your to you cupcake cut pieces and let dry.

Now it's time to open your cupcake, I use some white paper clips to secure the cupcake along the back side, but if you plan on leaving it open permanently you can just use some glue.

Optional: if you want to add a little more pizazz to your cupcake punch out some multi colored circles using your paper punch and your colored cardstock. Treat these like sprinkles and glue them on top of your cupcake.

Making Progress

So the plan this weekend was to do some major cleaning up and get some projects done. And as long you only count the exterior of my house - I got that done. . . Well, I should say we got that done, I had my parents help (thank goodness).

Besides the general mowing and weed eating that goes along with yard care, we pulled out my old weed riddled front path and replaced it was a strictly mulch one (I'm not sure I made the best choice, but we'll see). We pulled out the white fly eaten ficus bushes that ran along my fence in the front yard (it involved a large pick-up truck, some chain and a lot of digging). I bought a shed! and put it together! We planted some plants (I ran out of potting soil, so I'm not quite done). Oh, and I finally got my flag hung back up just in time for Memorial day!

. . . and I did get some work done inside, just not nearly enough.

Honeycomb Fail

Not all my DIY / craft projects turn out how I planned. I've had an idea for a fun (and hopefully) simple DIY honeycomb party decoration, but so far all I have accomplished is a few epic fails. At least the fail pictured above makes for a pretty photo.

Why am I telling you about my failings? Well, because I think I may have worked out the kinks and I want to rework the craft this weekend and share it next week. . . and I know if I don't share my plan with you I probably will keep putting it off. Oh, and I totally plan on begging a certain professional photographer I know into taking the photos for me.

Who Does That?

So I was reading an article on organization (something I need help with) in one of my favorite magazines when I became extremely distracted by the styling of the photo. . .

All I could concentrate on was "who puts a watermelon in a bookcase?" The article suggested using bookshelves with unusual shapes (like the one pictured) made for a perfect match of storage and styling, which I totally agree with. . . but then there's the watermelon. . .

The article also suggested using extra bookcases in other parts of the house for storage, like the kitchen as a pantry. . . okay, so that sorta ties in the watermelon, except for the fact that this bookshelf wasn't styled as a pantry. . . so, again, who puts a watermelon in a bookcase?

Plants, Plants and More Plants

I've set myself a summer goal of bringing some curb appeal to my little house. The chartreuse paint has to go, the front door needs a new shade of pink and I want to do some planting.

So I took a little trip to the local plant nursery to get some ideas. Turns out that I am attracted to plants that look like they are from outer space. I loved the crotons, bulbines, and marginatas.

I need to actually sit down and draw up a yard plan to figure out where and how to use all these alien plants.

An added bonus of wandering around the nursery was that this friendly little nursery cat decided to wander with me. She stayed right at my feet for a good 20 minutes, until she spotted a dog that another customer had brought with them, then she hightailed to into the cactus section.

I have a bit of a wrapping paper problem. . . if I see cute wrapping paper on sale I buy it, wither I need it or not. . . yeah, let's be honest, I'm a wrapping paper hoarder (I have a roll of paper I bought some 10 years ago, because it was pretty and I've never used it). So yeah, I'm kinda in love with this modern Wrapping Cart from Crate and Barrel.

One In Every Color

I found these dresses at Target and fell in love. They are the perfect summer dress. . . cute, light weight, easy to dress up or down. . . oh, and they have pockets!

I've tried on the black, white and teal one and the denim and patterned one and loved them both, but I have it in my head that I want the mint and navy with polka dots one. . . I just haven't been able to find it in my size yet. Not to worry, I have no problem checking every Target in a 20 mile radius.

And let's be honest, in the end I will most likely spurge on more than one of them.
