ZUMIX Radio recently worked with students at Meridian Academy to produce short commentaries based on research papers they wrote for class. We focused on personal stories to create these commentaries and to transform their research into a message. Here is the collection of commentaries they produced:
Red Sox GM Leaves
After 9 years of Leading the Boston Red Sox to the finals and winning 2 World Series, General Manager, Theo Epstein, leaves today to join the Chicago Cubs. He turned a group of men that once was okay into a great team. After being transferred to the Cubs he says his last good-bye to the team he had made.
Since the recession, 48 out of 50 of the states have seen a drop in birth rates. The data collected in 2010 showed a drop from 69.6 thousand births in 2007, to 64.7 thousand in 2010. Minorities make up a large percentage of those affected. From 2008 to 2009, Hispanics have seen a 5.9 percent decrease, while birth rates among black women have seen a 2.4 percent drop.
This past weekend, DJ Z-Girl of the Nova Show (airs every other Thursday 5-6pm on ZUMIX Radio) interviewed Jon Herington, guitarist from the Steely Dan touring band in the studios of ZUMIX Radio! Part of that interview will air on The Nova Show in a few weeks. Stay tuned for that, and the full-length interview posted here following the debut on her show.

Planted right across the street from Madison Square Garden and down the street from Time Square, we spent the weekend learning, networking and embedding ourselves in the bustle of New York City. Here are report-backs from the journey:

Chris's report-back:

My trip to the big apple for the 71st Annual IBS International Radio, TV, Webcasting and Podcasting Conference described in one word would be amazing. Between the interesting workshops and the eye-dropping tall buildings the experience was memorable.

I am Chris Frangolini host of On The Fly Sports Radio Show, the only teen sports talk show in Boston. My show is live on ZUMIX Radio every Tuesday at 6-p.m.. Personally, I took a lot back from the conference and got tons of tips and tricks of the game of being an up and coming sportscaster. I even got several contacts, which I have kept in touch with either through email, text, or facebook. That was one of the most important things I have learned from the conference that social networking is extremely important.

My favorite workshop had to be Conducting Great Interviews. I liked that workshop because interviewing is an essential skill to have as a sportscaster. I learned that when conducting an interview to make sure that you have really done your homework and have a set guideline of questions to ask. I also met a fellow sportscaster Ray, who broadcasts for audio8ball.com, and from Mt. San Antonio College's Radio Broadcasting Program, and we hit it off talking for at least four or five hours. We talked about the most random things from family, to school, to being on the radio. Ray and I have stayed in touch and I will be having him as a guest on my radio show, On The Fly, soon.

The best piece of advice that I received from Beth Becall, a present of one of the workshops and an experience radio DJ, was to learn everything you possibly can before you do anything to pursue your dream in radio broadcasting.

One of the workshops I attended was Hip-Hop Programming On Air. The majority of people in the workshop were college students with an exception of 3 high schoolers, including myself. Being one of the youngest in the workshop changed my perspective on playing old school Hip-Hop on my show, The Junk Box. We wanted folks in the class to think deeply about the place of East Boston. That could mean exploring a particular location, person, social or political issue. And the theme offered a framework for students to pursue stories from a variety of perspectives, time-frames and narratives.

The process of the class took us everywhere from analyzing media images around us, thinking about how to describe the world using all of our senses, and listening to a whole bunch of youth-produced audio. And, we got to talk about all sorts of things in East Boston: things we like and some things we don't like as much.
Take a listen to these fantastic pieces!

Haley Collibee researched, a lot. She was curious about the rate of teen pregnancy in East Boston compared to the rest of the city, and the country. While she's still trying to find the numbers, she went out on the street to gather a variety of human perspectives on Teenage Pregnancy in East Boston.

Esmeralda Mendez lives in East Boston but does not attend the one high school in Eastie. She wondered why some parents send their kids to other schools. She explores this question in her piece Eastie vs O'Bryant. (note: this piece is in two parts. She introduces an interview that she performed live and that recording is omitted)
Eastie vs O'Bryant part 2

Lexii Viola started out wondering about racism in East Boston. But as she started asking questions, her story transformed. Listen to Changes in East Boston to hear this journey.

Marvin Gonzales grew up in East Boston. One day in class he told us a story about the dirt park he used to play in as a kid and how one day he noticed the area transforming. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the consequences for use of alcohol and other drugs among teens have been linked to issues such as injuries caused by fighting, problems at school, and illegal acts. Many teens have been getting involved in drugs and alcohol due to peer pressure, trying to be popular or accepted by their peers.

Teens who use drugs and alcohol as an escape from the world and reality don't see how bad the consequences are. Here are some statistics:

~ About two fifths of students (41%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by 8th grade.

www.sadd.com

~ Three out of every four students (75%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school.

www.sadd.com

There are also serious results for teens who abuse drugs and alcohol, like drunk driving incidents, diseases from drugs and alcohol, STD's, and HIV. Cigarette smoking has many negative health consequences.

How can teens seek help for this problem? There are many local organizations in Boston that help teens with problems around drug alcohol and drug abuse. Some organizations ask you to follow a "step" process. These groups take what they do very seriously and strive to get teens truly out of drugs and alcohol.

The Adolescent Substance Program is an Abstinence based program. Not everyone believes in abstinence as the only way to prevent teen drug and alcohol abuse. They may believe in giving alternatives to teens. But in this interview, Intake Coordinator Camilo Chao tells me about the way his program runs and how they deal with their patients.

Graffiti and Us.

Graffiti seems so right to some but to other it's not just wrong, it's a crime. The people who draw graffiti love it because they love what they do. The people who are getting their property tagged hate it because they feel invaded.

Graffiti is something that will always be around. The concept of graffiti predates ancient Greece, and the word "graffiti"comes from the Greek word "graphein," which means to write. In fact, everyday new graffiti is created. According to statistics compiled by the Department of Justice and Attorney General and available on www.lawlinks.nsw.org, the police recorded 1.4 million incidents of graffiti in the United States in 2008 alone. The law considers tagging property vandalism, while the kids doing it describe it as "art". There are also academics and adult artist supporters and every year, books compiling examples of graffiti are released. Justin Zullo is an example of an academic and an adult artist supporter. You can listen to my interview with him here.

There are two types of graffiti, tagging and more careful, "artistic" pieces. Taggers do what they do because they want to spread their "tag name" and mark their property. What they do only takes a few seconds and then they are on the run. People who do more "artistic" graffiti take time with what they do. Victor is an example of an artist who takes time with what he does. You can hear my interview with him here. They work hard on their sketching, shadowing, outlining, and coloring. Some of these people get hired by organizations to work on murals and move on to make art their profession. Here in East Boston there was a time when most of the tagging was gang related. The police I spoke to said that tagging in general has subsided and they believe the gang related tagging has completely stopped for the time being. You can hear the interview I had with Sergeant George Corrino here.

Can We Bet On a Casino in Suffolk Downs?

The future of Suffolk Downs?

Does putting a casino in Suffolk Downs mean Massachusetts is trying to solve its money problems by following the gambling pack? If so, is that a good idea?

Casino gambling is currently available in 29 states. As a consequence, annual gaming revenue grew from $9 billion in 1991 to over $30.74 billion in 2009. Supporters of the Suffolk Downs casino want a piece of the action.

Advocates believe the casino will create thousands of jobs, and will bring hundreds of millions dollars to Massachusetts that is now being spent in New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Maine.

Opponents say the casino will breed crime and create new gambling addicts. Proponents respond that they will set aside a significant amount of money to help the few who become addicted to gambling.

Residents of Massachusetts can gamble already with the lottery, scratch tickets, racetracks, online poker, and lotto. Will the possible windfall in hard cash be enough to turn Suffolk Downs into a gambling hot spot?

According to the East Boston Times, at least for the moment, the idea seems doomed. The state legislature and governor agreed on the concept of one casino, but when Robert Deleo, Massachusetts House speaker, said he wanted two slot parlors at two racetracks, the governor said he was "done" and took the casino idea off the table.

For the moment, the casino idea is in limbo. I think it will be put back on the table and be accepted once Massachusetts becomes so financially desperate that is can find no other alternative.

Healthier Kids, Happier Lives

One of the hardest things many people struggle with is balancing one's self-image with the possible health risks of being overweight, as this risks are very real and are only getting worse. For example,Type-2 diabetes, once common mostly among adults, it is now affecting more and more children between the ages of 10 and 19. More than 13,000 children are diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes in the United States each year.
   http://www.athealth.com/consumer/disorders/youthdiabetes.html

http://news.wustl.edu/news/pages/4881.aspx

We are brainwashed by the media culture to try and look a certain way and to worship celebrities. At the same time, the rate of eating disorders is rising among youth and, in general, our food choices are not only becoming more harmful to our health, but increasing how much we weigh as well.

http://www.something-fishy.org/cultural/themedia.php

Many different types of organizations are trying to find ways to fight obesity and bad eating habits, such as the "Let's Get Moving" program from the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center. This program focuses on educating local residents about proper nutrition and the importance of exercise for children. Public schools are also integrating the idea of healthy eating habits by providing students with an array of healthy food choices.

http://www.ebnhc.org/programs.letsgetmovin.php

     http://www.edutopia.org/blog/tackle-obesity-schools-students-healthcorps

How can my generation prove to younger kids, especially those who are over-weight or at risk of obesity, that nutritious can be delicious? An increasing number of these residents are afraid of using banks because some immigrants are undocumented and banks check identification of people who want to open new accounts. This creates a tricky balance between financial security and personal safety. According to the website heinrichhispanidad.com, less than fifty percent of Latino immigrants have bank accounts.

The same website states that immigrants have “...little experience with financial institutions and many are accustomed to functioning solely within a cash economy.”

Ironically, banks have lobbied for legislation that has given immigrants more flexibility to create bank accounts. Passed in 2003, this legislation grants wider legal acceptance of Matriculas Consulares, the photo ID issued by the Mexican government to its working citizens.

The results of immigrants not using banks is concrete as there seems to be a correlation between immigrants not using banks and an increase in the number of robberies of Hispanics that occur. According to Americans for Legal Immigrations, between August 2005 and June 2006, Hispanics were targeted in 45 percent of 42-armed robberies in Raleigh, North Carolina.

There needs be adjustments on both sides. As ALIPAC states, “This is the time where the community's getting used to a new world, a new system and a new culture." Financial institutions, for their part, need to make a more user-friendly system for immigrants.

White Hen Pantry used to be a marvelous sight to witness: rows and rows of junk, aisles dedicated to sugar, cases and cases of alcohol waiting to be consumed. The store used to look lively! Candy here, drinks there, deli meat; but now, there is nothing except empty rows that no longer bear the weight of the goods that used to reside there. Everything is empty. It’s become a dark, gloomy place.

Zumix was once right across the street from this White Hen Pantry on Maverick St., but moved to a new location in the winter of 2010. About four months after Zumix's relocation, White Hen abruptly, and permanently, shut its doors. Did the store close down because Zumix moved to a new location? Or, did White Hen Pantry close down for another reason? The last owner fled so quickly that he even left a pair of his glasses on the counter. It made me wonder what really happened.

I spoke with the owner of Swish 'n Swash , the laundromat located next to White Hen. He told me some very interesting things about its closing. There was some things that he would not talk about because the situation was in litigation, but he did tell me that he thought Zumix had nothing to do with it. "White Hen has been doing bad for years," he said. "Its a shame. It's been around for years. White Hen and myself lost business when they built those houses over there. That used to be a passageway from the main road to here."

It may or not may not be Zumix's big move that dramatically changed White Hen's income. It is also true that the huge national chain 7-Eleven recently bought all of the New England White Hen Pantry franchises. We do not know exactly what effect 7-Eleven's purchase has had on the New England White Hen Pantries, but their Director of Corporate Communications did send me a press release that answered general questions about the acquisition, but did not address this situation specifically.

where the passage was.

I talked with a few kids at Zumix about how they felt about the recent closing, and also their favorite memories of White Hen. Below is some audio from those conversations.

Lisa and Rokia Traore!

I am Lisa Herrera and I am in the Zumix Radio Journalism Class.
