Wat die beemurg oorplanting aan betref glo ek die SMS wat Jannes self gestuur het sal verduidelik hoekom die konsert vir ons so belangrik is:

Soos baie van julle weet is ek op 28 Junie 2009 met bloedkanker gediagnoseer. Ek het daarna maandeliks chemoterapie ontvang en in Januarie 2010 het die beenmurg toetse aangedui dat ek in remissie was. Beenmurg toetse is egter weer in Maar vanjaar gedoen en ek is toe meegedeel dat die kanker terug was.

Ek kry die week my laaste chemo terapie aangesien dit my nie meer kan genees nie. Ek is deur die dokters meegedeel dat die enigste manier om my kans om die kanker te oorleef van 3% na 60% op te stoot, is om n beenmurg oorplanting te kry aangesien chemoterapie nou slegs vir my tyd koop.

'n 38 Jarige dame is geidentifiseer as n moontlike skenker vir my. Ek is egter Vrydag meegedeel dat voordat die beenmurg oorgeplant kan word, welke binne 5 weke moet gebeur, verskeie toetse op die skenker gedoen moet word. Hierdie toetse en al die koste verbonde aan die beenmurg beloop 'n bedrag van R113,550.00.

Die slegte nuus is dat my mediese fonds nie hierdie bedrag gaan betaal nie en moet ek dit self finansier. My finansieele posisie is egter van so aard dat ek dit nie self kan finansier nie en daarom het ek n fonds gestig wat deur prokureurs geadministreer word en waarin mense finansieele bydraes kan maak. Volgens die dokters lyk my kanse op oorlewing maar beroerd as ek nie die oorplanting kry nie en daarom sal ek enige hulp in die verband baie waardeer.

Ek wil julle byvoorbaat bedank vir julle hulp en gebede ... Jannes Vermaak.

Time to blog again

It is time to blog again ... but I guess one of the reasons I do not blog as I feel my tenses are not well ... so I sometimes (being Afrikaans) tend to mess up my English, but I decided to ignore that and just write ... blog...

What do I blog about ... will people read it ... or is it just a way to get rid of thoughts. Do we want some kind of recognition or fame by blogging? Is blogging something of the past with stuff like Facebook and Twitter ? Has the world become one-liners filled with smiley faces ... status updates or is there more to sharing thoughts ... will we eventually get back to talking ... sharing ... and I guess it will and therefore I decided to start blogging again ... in Afrikaans as well as in English.

As I just joined the Top 10 chip leaders with a AA and KQ I folded and here I am ...

OK, what did I learn today ...

What an awesome year this was. When it comes to blogging I guess I did not do very well ... I guess I was preoccupied with setting up Pixel Pro Photography. It was an interesting year where we did more that just take/make photos. We attended functions that we never thought we would have been able to attend, but with camera in hand it was moments worth every effort.

That's possible under a new system Google unveiled on Thursday. Hoping to give its search engine a more personal touch, Google now lets users reshuffle results so their favourite websites get top billing and disliked destinations get discarded the next time they enter the same request.

It marks the first time that the internet's most popular search engine has allowed its audience to alter the order of search results.

History of photography

Photography is the result of combining several technical discoveries. Long before the first photographs were made, Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) (965–1040) invented the camera obscura and pinhole camera,^[2] Albertus Magnus (1193–1280) discovered silver nitrate, and Georges Fabricius (1516–1571) discovered silver chloride. Daniel Barbaro described a diaphragm in 1568. Wilhelm Homberg described how light darkened some chemicals (photochemical effect) in 1694. The fiction book Giphantie, by French author Tiphaigne de la Roche, described what can be interpreted as photography.

Photography as a usable process goes back to the 1820s with the development of chemical photography. The first permanent photograph was an image produced in 1826 by the French inventor Nicéphore Niépce. However, the picture took eight hours to expose, so he went about trying to find a new process. Working in conjunction with Louis Daguerre, they experimented with silver compounds based on a Johann Heinrich Schultz discovery in 1724 that a silver and chalk mixture darkens when exposed to light. Niépce died in 1833, but Daguerre continued the work, eventually culminating with the development of the daguerreotype in 1837. Eventually, France agreed to pay Daguerre a pension for his formula, in exchange for his promise to announce his discovery to the world as the gift of France, which he did in 1839.

Meanwhile, Hercules Florence had already created a very similar process in 1832, naming it Photographie, and William Fox Talbot had earlier discovered another means to fix a silver process image but had kept it secret. After reading about Daguerre's invention, Talbot refined his process so that it might be fast enough to take photographs of people. By 1840, Talbot had invented the calotype process, which creates negative images. John Herschel made many contributions to the new methods. He invented the cyanotype process, now familiar as the "blueprint". He was the first to use the terms "photography", "negative" and "positive". He discovered sodium thiosulphate solution to be a solvent of silver halides in 1819, and informed Talbot and Daguerre of his discovery in 1839 that it could be used to "fix" pictures and make them permanent. He made the first glass negative in late 1839.

In March 1851, Frederick Scott Archer published his findings in "The Chemist" on the wet plate collodion process. This became the most widely used process between 1852 and the late 1880s when the dry plate was introduced. There are three subsets to the Collodion process; the Ambrotype (positive image on glass), the Ferrotype or Tintype (positive image on metal) and the negative which was printed on Albumen or Salt paper.

Many advances in photographic glass plates and printing were made in through the nineteenth century. In 1884, George Eastman developed the technology of film to replace photographic plates, leading to the technology used by film cameras today.

In 1908 Gabriel Lippmann won the Nobel Laureate in Physics for his method of reproducing colours photographically based on the phenomenon of interference, also known as the Lippmann plate.

The Rules of Photography

People often refer to “the classic rules of photography”: “This photo follows the classic rules…” or “he/she broke all the classic rules…” etc. But what are those “classic rules” anyway?

Rule #1 : F/8 And Be There!

This is rule number one and it has little to do with your camera and technical proficiency, as is the case with the other four rules. Read this rule again, breath it and live it. As simple as it sounds, it is the most important of all rules in photography.

The part about f/8 refers to a camera setting, or rather a lens aperture setting. It’s a technical detail and it’s not really important. But at the same time it’s what makes this rule so memorable.

It’s not a bad advice using f/8, it’s a pretty standard value and often safe to use if you want to be sure to get your subject in focus without giving it much thought.

But it’s true value is that it boils all the complicated art and tech issues down to that simple 1-letter-1-number statement, f/8 (simply read f eight), the hidden message being: Forget the technical aspects, concentrate on the subject. Simple and brilliant.

In my experience it’s mostly used in the context of spot news photography, where it’s certainly important to be on the spot when something happens. But I wouldn’t forget about it in the context of normal peoples lives, peaceful landscape photos and even photos for the family album. Whatever photo you want to capture, you have to be there first. You have to get up and go out, walk that extra mile, lose that hour of sleep, do whatever it takes for you to get there with your camera.

A talented, but lazy photographer is not necessarily as successful as a very active, less talented one. Because you have to be there.

Rule #2 : The Decisive Moment

A term coined by photography legend Henri Cartier-Bresson. Sort of a time-version of rule number 1. Together we could call these two rules: “Being in the right place at the right time”.

But there’s more to this rule than just being there at the right time. You have to press the shutter button at exactly the decisive moment, when all the elements of the photo (perhaps including the photographer himself) suddenly come together in a fraction of a second. A blink of an eye and it’s gone again. The man jumping over the puddle has touched down again, the guy in the background has turned his head away from the kissing couple and the dying soldier has fallen flat to the ground.

It happens so fast that it’s hard for us to see and react to before it’s over. But that is one of the big charms of photography. It can capture these fleeing moments and make them last forever — on print. For Cartier-Bresson it was an intuitive thing. “Think before and after you take a photograph, not while you are doing it.”

Sports photography arguably has a lot of decisive moments, but in my book they don’t really count, since it’s just a game and not truly a slice of reality. I know Cartier-Bresson in his book set off with quoting someone “there’s nothing in the world that doesn’t have a decisive moment”, but I don’t want to get into the discussion here. Many people who are more sports enthusiastic than me would probably disagree with me, but I do think that there’s more real decisive moments to be had on the stadium seating than on the pitch.

Rule #3 : Go Close

– And when you’ve done that, go even closer! Coined by another photography legend, Robert Capa, who died following this rule, camera in his hand, as he stepped on a landmine in the French-Indochinese war. But not all situations of course are life-and-death situations. So use it whenever you reasonably can, and your photos will in many cases have a stronger appeal and give a more intimate connection between the subject and the viewer.

Again, it’s not just for spot news photography. If you are portraying normal life, it is equally important to get close to people. Get into their homes and into their private lives where they are themselves. Do it in a way that isn’t prying and offensive. It will give you an honest and intimate view of life.

This rule usually implies using a wide-angle lens, which tends to give a more “open” perspective. Much good can also be said about the long tele-photo lenses as well, and they have their place. Especially in fields like wildlife and sports photography, where it is often impossible to be up close to the action.

Rule #4 : The Rule Of Thirds

This is one of these rules that are great to follow and equally great to break. But photography would be a lesser thing without it. Briefly stated, it tells you to place you main subject, not in the center of the frame, but a little to the left or right side, a third into the frame. And also to place any dominating horizontal lines in your photo, like for instance the horizon, a third into the frame from the top or bottom. Just not in the center.

This will arguably give your photo a more appealing look, pleasing to the eye by leaving a significant space on one side of the subject for the surroundings. The rule, also known as the divine proportion and the golden mean, have been used by painters for thousands of years. Having survived that long, there’s got to be something about it!

Rule #5 : Use The Light

The magic hours, the hour around sunrise and the hour around sunset have a particular pleasing, soft light that works particular well for landscape and outdoor photography. It’s always the light that creates the photograph. For indoor and portrait photography, use a barn door or, if you don’t live on a farm, a big window without direct sunlight will also do. Place your subject close to the window and you will get a nice, soft light from different angles falling onto your subject. You can get the whole studio lighting set-up as well if you prefer not to rely on the constantly changing natural light.

SLR camera is first to shoot video

Nikon hopes to hammer that point with the release of its latest digital single-lens reflex camera, the D90, expected in stores this month for approximately R15000. Nikon is billing the D90 as the first SLR with video capability.

Newer SLRs, such as the D90 and best-selling Canon Digital Rebel EOS XSi, let you compose a shot on the camera's LCD preview screen rather than the viewfinder, just as you would with a point-and-shoot camera. Nikon engineers were able to take advantage of the feature, called Live View, to enable video-shooting on the D90.

They did it by using a faster frame rate (a measure of how fast a camera produces consecutive images) and a different way of processing the images. "The big plus is that you can now shoot video with a great lens," said Steve Heiner, Nikon's senior technical manager.

Clips can be shot in both high-definition and standard-definition.

High-def clips take more room than standard, so you'll need a high-capacity storage card for the camera, 8 gigabytes or bigger.

Point-and-shoot cameras have fixed lenses that extend only so far.

With an SLR, you can hone your shots using ultrawide-angle or telephoto zoom lenses -- accessories that can cost thousands of dollars because of their fine optics. Camera enthusiasts who step up to SLRs do so to take advantage of the higher-quality images. "This is a game-changing product," said Chris Chute of researcher IDC.

Google 404 widget

Google now offers webmasters a JavaScript-based gadget to include into their 404 (page not found) pages. Depending on where the user went and what other pages are available on the server, this widget will show suggestions of where to go, and offer a search box (sometimes with a suggested query in it as well).

To get the widget, log-in to your Google Webmaster Tools and pick Tools -> “Enhance 404 pages” from the navigation. Now copy the code snippet you’ll get into your 404 template.

In the screenshot you can see a sample by Google showing the different features, and then a live test at this blog. I’ve activated the widget here for now (I’ll probably remove it later) so you can test it by entering some non-existing URLs at blogoscoped.com. Note the widget comes with some stylesheet classes so you can change the layout.

Online Gaming Legalised in South Africa : Gaming Alerts: "Thabo Mbeki today officially allowed online gambling in South Africa, after the nations gaming association called for amendments to current laws. A report conducted by the gaming association highlighted the need for legislation to control and maintain a safe online gambling industry.
