Aceh Besar / Jantho1. Cut Nyak Dhien House. The house is a replica of the heroine Cut Nyak Dhien House, from the Aceh War. The house was burnt down by the colonial forces but a replica was built later. This house in Lam Pisang, about 6 kilometers from Banda Aceh, is now a museum.

Sabang (Pulau Weh), Sabang island has gorgeous beaches and spot for diving. Virging Iboih forrest with beautiful waterfalls and Keuneukai hotspring. Bring your own sleeping bag If you don’t dare to lay down in the thin mattress. The price is considerably cheap. Breakfast is rarely included. From Banda Aceh, it is recommended to take speedboat from Ulee Lheu. It only takes 45 minute with cost of Rp 60,000. If you are heading to Gapang or Iboih, you can take public transportation ( L-300 minibus stuffed with passangers). The cost is around 40,000 to 50,000 with travelling hours around 1 hour.

Aceh Utara / Lhokseumawe

Lhokseumawe is a town located 274 km from Banda Aceh which is now being developed as an industrial zone. Many gigantic plants are constructed following the discovery of huge LNG resources in the area. Touristic features of the town is a.o. Samudera Pasai. It was the first great Islamic kingdom of Indonesia. All that remains of it, however, is a graveyard 18 km east of the town. One of the graves belongs to Malikussaleh, as Samudera Pasai’s first king. The western coastel ares of Aceh, Including the cities of Banda Aceh, Calang, and Meulaboh, were among the areas hardest-hit by the stunami resulting from the Indian Ocean earthquake on 26 December 2004.

While estimmates vary, appoximaately 230,000 people ware killed by earthquake and stunami in Aceh, and about 500,000 were lift homeless. The tragedy of the stunami was further compounded on March 26 when a second off-shore earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale struck the sea bed between the islands of Simeulue island in Aceh and Nias in North Sumatra.

The population of Aceh before the December 2004 Stunami was 4,271,000(2004). The population as of 15 September 2005 was 4,031,589.

VISAS

Airport Tax

Gayo Lues Regency is a regency in the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province of Indonesia. Its capital is Blangkejeren. The regency covers an area of 5,719 square kilometres and according to the 2000 census had a population of 60,800 people.
90% of the inhabitants make their living from farming. Products include chili peppers, tobacco, coffee, and lemongrass, fish, rice, candle nut, pataculi, coconut, vanilla, kapok, chocolate, sugarcane, ginger, clove, casslevera, turmeric, and sugar palm. Logging is reportedly a major problem in the regency which is the least populated area of the province with less than 2% of the total population.

Weh Island or Pulau Weh or Pulo Weh (by the local population commonly referred to only as "Sabang", the name of the largest city) is a small active volcanic island to the northwest of Sumatra. It was originally connected to the Sumatran mainland and became separated by sea after the volcano's last eruption in the Pleistocene era.[1] The island is situated in the Andaman Sea. The largest city on the island, Sabang, is the northernmost outpost of Indonesia.
The island is known for its ecosystem; the Indonesian government has declared 60 square kilometres (23 sq mi) of inland and sea around the island as a wildlife protection area. A rare megamouth shark species was found on shore and the island is the only habitat for the threatened toad, Bufo valhallae (genus Bufo). Coral reef areas around the island are known for their large variety of fish species.

Aceh is a special territory (daerah istimewa) of Indonesia, located on the northern tip of Sumatra Island with the area of approximately 57,365.57 km square or 12.26 % of size of Sumatra Island. Its full name is Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam and Banda Aceh is the capital. Aceh is surrounded by Malacca Strait in the north, North Sumatra Province in the east, Indian Ocean in the south and the west.
The first Islamic Kingdom in Aceh was Perlak, established in 804. It is thought to have been in Aceh where Islam was first established in South East Asia. Under the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-36),

Aceh was the most wealthy, powerful and cultivated state in the region. During that time, Aceh dominated in trades and politics. With the death of Sultan Iskandar Thani in 1641, Aceh's decline began. The British and Dutch both started to vie for influence. In 1824 the London Treaty was signed, giving the Dutch control over all British possessions in Sumatra in return for a Dutch surrender of their establishments in India and an abrogation of all claims on Singapore. The Dutch fought a long drawn out struggle in their attempt to subdue the Acehnese. Aceh war against the Dutch from 1873 - 1942 was the longest and the most expensive (in money and human life victims) fought ever for the Dutch, costing them more than 10,000 lives.
Aceh has substantial natural resources, including oil and gas - some estimates put Aceh gas reserves as being the largest in the world. Relative to most of Indonesia, it is a religiously conservative area.

Aceh was the closest point of land to the epicenter of the massive 2004 Ocean Indian earthquake, which triggered a tsunami that devastated much of the western coast of the region, including part of the capital of Banda Aceh. 167,736 Indonesians, the overwhelming majority in Aceh, were killed or missing and 500,000 made homeless. This event helped trigger the peace agreement between the government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), mediated by former Finnish president Maarti Ahtisaari, with the signing of a MoU on August 15, 2005. With the assistance of the European Union through the Aceh monitoring mission
of December 2005, the peace has held.
