6 New Car Technologies in Your Not-So-Distant Future

From navigation systems to control for drowsy driving to cleaner fuel conversions, here’s what’s on the horizon for auto tech. Article condensed from original By Paul Weissler

1. Electronic Sun Visor

Sun visors never quite hit the mark if you travel east in the morning and west in the evening. We've even taped pieces of opaque paper to the bottom of the visor in an attempt to block the sun. A corporate research project is developing an electronic anti-glare system using an electronic matrix within the glass controlled by a computer to block the rays.

A sun status sensor and a sensor that determines the eye position of the driver both feed signals to the computer, which calculates the point of sunlight entry within the viewing angle of the driver's eyes. The computer then produces a dark "spot" in the glass electronic matrix to block sunlight at that location (similar to the automatic darkening of rear-view mirrors). The spot moves across the windshield as the car changes direction. Right now, the technology doesn't allow for use on all glass, but it would be a huge improvement over the archaic sun visor if and when it's implemented.

2. Family Tech

"Are we there yet?" It's a question every parent hears at least 600 times every hour on a family road trip. In the past, dad would roll his eyes and say, "Not yet, sweetie." Soon, the kids may be able to answer their own question. Upcoming child navigation system is essentially a rear DVD screen with a simplified representation of the route, plus special descriptions of scenes along the route. A "time worm" on the screen "eats" away at the length of the route, so the children can see it decreasing. A cartoon character on screen plays games and asks the children to do in-seat exercises and even goes to sleep when the kiddies are napping.

Do your kids that still need the child's seat? One manufacturer showed a special power seat that mounts to the second row. The system is controlled by the driver, who can raise the seat so a child can see through the windshield--or fold it back flat for naptime. Plus, the seat can swivel out, making it easier for any parent to lift the child in and out of the vehicle. Cool.

3. Traffic Decongestion

The freeway you drive everyday suddenly slims down one lane because of an accident--how frustrating. The cars in that blocked lane have to move over. So they inevitably cause a slowdown in traffic in all the other lanes. But is that slowdown really inevitable?

The German government is sponsoring an auto industry initiative called "ACTIV," intended to spur use of technology for traffic management and lead eventually to automatic guidance. As one of its contributions, German engineers produced a study that shows how to free up traffic snarls by having cars speed up at exactly the right time. It's basically what you've always wished drivers would do: speed up and let the other drivers in.

Here's how it would work: Instead of letting all cars slowdown in the traffic flow, a car in the lane adjacent to the closed lane would be instructed to speed up just before reaching the snarl. That would create a space behind it for a car in the blocked lane--without coming to a near stop and trying to edge in at the last minute. A traffic management system, tricked out with cameras and computers to record and analyze the road, would provide instructions on when to stop and go.

A more effective system would assume semi-autonomous control of the vehicles approaching the bottleneck. This could be used with an advanced version of adaptive cruise control and interactive communication to a local traffic management system. The reality, of course, is that without fully automated highways, there's not much that can be done about a rubberneck at the site of an accident.

4. Hands-off Doze Control

Drowsy driving is a major cause of accidents around the world. Soon, sophisticated camera systems will be able to read highway markings and sound a gentle warning to alert the driver if the vehicle is drifting. But even more aggressive intervention is in development, the car was able to correct its own path in such a scenario.

At a proving grounds in Germany, the system was tested at moderate highway speeds. We didn't exactly fold both arms into our lap and forget about driving--it is rather tough to trust a computer with your life--but it did work quite well. Here's how: Thanks to electric power steering, a computer can control the steering gear motor signaled by a camera system and another computer judging the situation. If the camera and sensors detect drifting outside normal driving parameters, it takes control. Although the system is aggressive, it can be overridden. For example, activating a turn signal or dialing in extra steering effort will disable the system.

Because of a lack of public acceptance, cars equipped with electronic steering have seen very limited computer intervention. It's usually just enough assistance to improve handling. Cars that take complete control away from the driver better be flawless. One of the most pressing issues is how to determine when the driver is losing attention or intentionally trying to switch lanes. So the first applications of this technology are likely to be paired with adaptive cruise control.

The car we drove actually used sensors to monitor a driver's heartbeat to determine if they were awake and alert or sleepy and dozing. As software engineers better learn such human performance, they can use all sorts of signals to activate or disable the system--body temperature, movement in the seat hands on the steering wheel, even eye movements. At this point the hardware is there, but we're just waiting for the right computer programs.

5. Cleaner Fuel

The European auto industry is taking a hard look at synthetic fuel, made by solid-to-liquid or gas-to-liquid processes. Most of these methods, including improved versions of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis invented in the 1920s, use catalysts (usually iron or cobalt) to convert solids like coal and agricultural waste or natural gas into liquid fuel. Also under development is ethanol produced from cellulose (straw, wood and various waste materials), rather than from corn or beets, which affect food supply.

Biomass fuels, called "SunFuels" because of their renewable origin, are made by the same basic processes as other synthetic fuels. Synthetic fuel can be designed for the precise combustion characteristics needed for certain advanced engine technologies.

And what about hydrogen? Manufacturers are not particularly optimistic. A company has been developing a high-temperature fuel cell (so it needs far less cooling to continue working), but even German engineers see fuel cells as 20 years away or more.

And as a German engineer said, if lithium-ion or another battery technology can achieve an energy density to propel a car 200 kilometers (120 mi.) per 100 kg weight (220 pounds), "the fuel cell is surpassed." At this point, lithium-ion is at just 7 km (4.2 mi.) per 100 kg, and the ones in development will reach 21 km (12.2 mi.) per 100 kg soon. The research is apparently underway for 70 km (42 miles) per 100 kg performance in these batteries.

6. Future Power plants

The near-term steps are to use fossil fuels more efficiently in piston engines. Adjunct to these, according to German researcher Jurgen Leohold, are gasoline engines with start-stop capability, traditional hybrids and the "range extender." That's a plug-in hybrid with a tiny gasoline engine to recharge the batteries for distances greater than plug-ins alone can provide.

All vehicle manufacturers are developing Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines that use spark ignition for heavy load operation but in light load can ignite a lean mixture throughout a cylinder without a spark. The "homogenous charge" is a uniform mix of air, fuel and up to 70 percent of the already-burned exhaust gas. Compression stroke brings the mixture to a controlled self-ignition state -- no need for a spark. Because of the uniform mix in the cylinder, there's no hot flame front, and the mixture burns almost instantaneously and completely throughout the cylinder. So there aren't any "hot spots" to produce engine knocking. The engine requires spark plugs for starting and heavy loads, but in HCCI mode, it improves fuel economy about 10 to15 percent--close to a diesel. It does require a "designer" gasoline, perhaps a synthetic gasoline.

One manufacturer has gone further, using a designer gasoline in a combination mode diesel engine with what it calls Combined Combustion System (CCS). Unlike diesel injection, which occurs when the piston is at top dead center on compression stroke, the CCS begins fuel injection as the piston is still rising on compression stroke, well before top dead center. This early injection promotes good air-fuel mixing with a lot of recirculated exhaust gas. The exhaust helps delay combustion until just after top dead center. The result is about 5 percent better fuel economy than a diesel. Just as important, the fuel-air-exhaust mixture burns at lower temperatures, so there's less formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx)--a major air pollutant that diesels require expensive after-treatment to reduce. In the CCS engine, the "designer gasoline" is a synthetic fuel, and a test car we drove at VW's proving grounds used SunFuel made entirely from biomass.

Hottest New Cars and Trucks for 2015

With automakers already having largely renewed their fleets of mainstream sedans and small cars, a bevy of all-new and completely redesigned sports cars, luxury sedans, SUVs and pickup trucks take center stage for the 2015 model year.

One of the most prominent among next year’s top models, particularly in terms of its market presence, is the industry’s best selling vehicle of any type, the Ford F150 full-size pickup truck. Lighter in weight for the sake of fuel economy but still no lightweight in terms of its capabilities, Ford dealers have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of a new F150 following successive model years that saw revised pickups from Chevrolet, GMC, Ram and Toyota arrive to take advantage of renewed demand for big trucks.

For their part, Chevy and GMC are hoping to enliven the otherwise dormant midsize pickup segment with long overdue redesigned and reintroduced Colorado and Canyon models. GM hopes there are still enough buyers out there who want added vehicular versatility, but for whom a full-size pickup is otherwise too big, costly and gas guzzling. At the other end of the size spectrum, General Motors renews its fleet of large truck-based SUVs (the Cadillac Escalade/ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/XL) for the first time in eight years, just as sales in that long-deflated product segment begin to tick healthily upwards.Still, there’s no hotter vehicles in the automotive business these days than compact crossover SUVs, which are attracting boatloads of buyers across a wide demographic swath. New crossovers for 2015 include the Chevrolet Trax, Jeep Renegade, Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC and what should instantly become both its brand’s sales leader and most profitable model, the racy Porsche Macan.

Among more pulse-pounding models, one of the longest running vehicles in the business – the venerable Ford Mustang – gets a major makeover that brings the original “pony car” into the modern age (yes, with an independent rear suspension that finally replaces the car’s traditional solid rear axle). Chevrolet, meanwhile, takes last year’s redesigned Corvette to new heights of performance with the blazingly hot track-ready Z06 coupe and convertible. The newest sports car to reach U.S. dealerships comes from Italy, courtesy of Alfa-Romeo, who intends to regain a foothold in the U.S., starting with the low-slung 4C. Among true exotics, Porsche reaches for the high end of the market with its limited production mid-engined 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid supercar.

New luxury models for 2015 include the compact Audi A3, which morphs from a sporty hatchback to an equally entertaining sedan; the Kia K900, which tests the brand’s upper limits in terms of both its size and price; the Acura TLX, which replaces both the TL and TSX in the luxury division’s lineup; the Hyundai Genesis sedan, which undergoes a major redesign; and a sleek S-Class coupe that supplants the former CL-Class models in Mercedes-Benz showrooms.

Of course there are a number of more mundane, though no less worthy, models being introduced for the 2015 we aren’t featuring here, including redesigned versions of the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Fit, Hyundai Sonata, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, MINI Cooper Hardtop and the Subaru Legacy and Outback. Chief among the more “normal” cars being recast for ’15 that we are in fact highlighting is one that’s arguably the most improved model of the year, the midsize Chrysler 200 sedan; to our tastes it went from one of the segment’s ugly ducklings to a bona fide swan in one fell swoop.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: December 2013

With the top seven automakers reporting sales, the industry is on track to end December 2013 about flat with December 2012. Don't call it a sputter just yet. Recall that December 2012 was a decent month — and that 2013 still ended well. Toward that end, each automaker charted its own course to the finish line.

Shoppers gave Toyota the indifferent shoulder as the automaker fell 1.7 percent in December. Three of Toyota's four best-sellers — the Camry, Corolla/Matrix, RAV4 and Prius family — saw lower sales versus year-ago figures. Nissan, by contrast, chalked a 10.5 percent rise on strong Sentra and Rogue sales. And Honda gained 1.9 percent in December as dealers began the month with Accords and CR-Vs aplenty, and shoppers lined up for both. Despite a similar inventory situation, however, the Civic fell 12.4 percent.

Chrysler stemmed losses from its Chrysler and Dodge brands with a 16.7 percent surge in Ram trucks and a 33.6 percent surge at Jeep, thanks in large part to more than 15,000 sales for the new Cherokee. The automaker said it was the best December in Jeep's 72-year history, and the SUV became Chrysler's third-best-selling vehicle, period. It more than quintuples the year-ago December sales of the Liberty it replaces.
Ram trucks aside, pickups had a weak month. In November, the home-construction market saw its best month since February 2008. Pickups have been on a roll, so we expected big numbers to end the year. Not so much: Full-size pickup sales sputtered in December, down 1.4 percent versus a good-but-not-great December 2012.
GM fell 6.3 percent overall as shoppers spurned the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Sales decreased 16 percent for the Silverado, adding to the lead for Ford's rival F-Series. Sales increased 8.4 percent for the automaker's best-selling pickup, which, despite its age, was also one of the fastest-selling cars in December. Sales for GM's full-size pickups remain up for the year, however, propelling the automaker to a 7.3 percent overall rise in 2013.
Ford's success extends past the F-Series. The Fusion sedan soared 26.6 percent as Ford dealers had a pile to sell — 95 days' inventory on Dec. 1 versus the industry's 77-day average, according to Automotive News, and nearly double the Fusion's 49-day supply in December 2012. Year-over-year incentives stayed put, but they could increase this month if Ford has any remaining supply to trim. Inventory for the automaker's Escape SUV is higher, too — 83 days — but Ford elevated incentives in December, and shoppers responded. Escape sales gained 21.5 percent through the month.
Still, overall transaction prices gained $882 per car in the first half of December versus all of December 2012, according to CNW Marketing Research. That means the average new car cost $32,900 in the first half of last month.

ETBU Receives $100,000 From Fenton Motor Group For West Rusk Scholarships

East Texas Baptist University received a check for $100,000 from the Fenton Motor Group on Thursday in Tyler to assist the 2013 graduates of West Rusk High School. MARSHALL, Texas (8/1/13)- East Texas Baptist University announces a major contribution of $100,000 by the Tyler based Fenton Motor Group to assist the 2013 graduates of West Rusk High School who will attend the upcoming fall semester. The donation was given in response to the fact funds did not materialize from a scholarship announcement made on May 29 at a West Rusk assembly that a benefactor would provide full scholarships to all 2013 and future graduates to attend ETBU.

ETBU has worked with each student to provide a scholarship package in order to assist them in attending. Over $125,000 in ETBU aid has been awarded to the West Rusk graduates for the 2013-2014 academic year. The gift by the Fenton Motor Group will significantly help toward the total cost for the 16 West Rusk students to attend ETBU.

"We are extremely grateful to Lance Fenton and the Fenton Motor Group for recognizing a need and stepping up to help these students,” said Vince Blankenship, ETBU Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing.

When it appeared the funds from the benefactor would not be in place by the tuition payment deadline, Matt Nerhling of Longview, created a Facebook page asking for donations for the West Rusk graduates. Nerhling contacted ETBU wanting to set up a donation account in order to give the public a way to help. Any individual, business, or group who would like to contribute to the West Rusk Scholarship fund may contact the University Advancement office at (903) 923-2069.

Fall classes at ETBU begin Monday, August 19 with freshmen move-in day on Thursday, August 15.

The great American road trip has a vaunted place in this country's history, and rightfully so. After all, we've been hitting the open road since the days when the family wagon had "Conestoga" chiseled on the wood panels.

Every road trip is memorable in its own way. Many of those memories, though, include overheating engines, circling vultures and expensive stays at bed-lice-ridden motels in two-bit towns — moments most of us would have preferred to avoid.

In that spirit, here are our Top 10 Road Trip Tips.

1. Get Your Car Checked Out

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Or, put another way, do you want to risk passing through the digestive system of wolves because of a loose hose clamp? We didn't think so.

Get your vehicle thoroughly serviced before you go. Wondering what to have checked? We shamelessly suggest the checklists in our Summer Driving Tips,Winter Driving Tips and our Service Advice area. If you need a good mechanic, you can check our humungous database of listener-recommended garages at the Mechanics Files.

2. Build In Rest Days

Are you going on a vacation — or a forced march? Give yourself a break!

When you're planning your itinerary, add in a few extra rest days. You'll enjoy the trip more, and since you'll be taxing your car less, it will be a bit less likely to break down. And you'll have time for that unplanned stop to see the World Famous Ear Wax Collection. (OK, there's not really a World Famous Ear Wax Collection. You weren't really looking forward to that, were you?)

3. Bring a Basic Repair Kit

Have a repair kit on hand for fixes you might be able to take care of yourself. At the very least, bring a few different sizes of regular and Phillips-head screwdrivers, vice grips, bailing wire to secure an errant muffler and a roll of duct tape. 5. Join a Travel Club

If you're not already a member of a travel club, join one before you leave on your adventure. It will save you a hassle right at the moment that you least need another migraine. There's always AAA, which has affiliates almost everywhere. But if you don't agree with AAA's self-serving push for highways over public transportation, check out the Better World Club or an auto club offered by your car's manufacturer.

6. Don't Drive 15 Hours a Day

Think your reaction time is just as good at 10 p.m. as it was at 7 a.m.? You crack us up! (And you might crack yourself up.) Professional truckers aren't supposed to drive more than 11 hours in a 14-hour workday — and neither should you.

Even when you keep it under 11 hours, it's still important to stop frequently. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. It's good for you, and it will force you to pull over frequently and take pit stops!

Our recommendation? A 15- to 30-minute doughnut and caffeine break (or carrot and tofu juice for some of you) along with a stretch every few hours.

7. Don't Drive at a Sustained High Speed All Day Long

When you're getting hypnotized by the sight of cornstalks for hours on end, it's easy to find yourself doing 85 mph. (Not that we've ever done that, mind you.) Wind resistance increases exponentially with speed, so driving fast places a huge demand on your car's engine. The end result? Your car is working a lot harder than it works at 55 or 65 mph. Stick to the speed limit, and you'll prolong the life of your engine's lubricant and, in turn, the life of your engine's components. And it will reduce the chance of a flaming breakdown in, say, Bugtussle, Ky.

8. Check the Air Pressure, Including the Spare

10. Going Up a Mountain? Back Off on the Throttle

If you're taking a long road trip, at some point you'll have to cross a small mountain range like, say, the Rockies or the Appalachians. Back off on the throttle. Many people assume they are required by natural law to maintain the same speed going up a mountain that they've maintained on Interstate 80 through Iowa. Not true. Your engine is working a lot harder to get your car up a hill, so by slowing down a bit, you'll save wear and tear, reduce the damage done by overheating, and you'll improve your gas mileage. Here's another good reason: There are plenty of places without guardrails. We rest our case.

11. Skip the Junk Food

Roadside convenience stores are notorious for lousy food. If pork rinds and a Slurpee aren't your idea of a great road trip lunch, bring a cooler on your adventure. In the morning, fill it with ice and drop by a decent supermarket. The ice should keep things cool until the next morning, when you can refresh it. Then, when the munchies hit, at least you won't be insulting your body with food products whose ingredients were developed in a secret lab in New Jersey.

It will guarantee that your trip will be memorable.

1st Gear: How A Weak Currency Is Going To Help You And Mazda

Mazda is in a strange place. No longer tethered to Ford and with no looming connection to another automaker, Japan's fifth largest car company doesn't have a huge bank of cash behind them (they had to sell a bunch of shares to get the cash they do have). They need to be careful.

Yet, they have a huge inherent advantage because they're an export focused company and Japan's move to dramatically weaken the Yen means they're making a huge profit any time they sell somewhere with a stronger currency (i.e. the U.S.). Bloomberg breaks it down nicely.

What does foreign currency manipulation have to do with you? Simple. If you love driver-focused, bold designs then you should be supporting Mazda anyways. They're more interesting in driving pleasure than any other large automaker. The Mazda3, Mazda6, and Mazda CX-5 all get the Jalopnik seal of approval.

Even if you didn't care about all that, Mazda can make the same profit on a vehicle with a lower price than it offered previously. This means volume is suddenly more important to Mazda which means one could reasonably expect incentives to go up. I.e., go buy a Mazda while the buying is good.

This year, at the 2013 Canadian International Auto Show, many auto manufacturers appear to be focusing on fuel economy, and getting to the elusive 1.4L/100km economy target.

Each manufacturer unveiled either a new fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle, or a new means to get more out of the traditional engine.

Nissan redesigned its Versa Hatch, rebranding it the Versa Note and making it one of the company’s most fuel efficient non-hybrid/non-electric vehicles in the lineup.

With its new CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and a single 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine, Nissan says that the Versa Note will get an estimated 40 mpg on the highway. They’ve also improved the car’s design for less wind resistance.To achieve this, Nissan is using an in-house fuel efficiency package called Pure Drive, which is designed to give the car low CO2 emissions and great fuel economy.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen is going a different route. The German automaker is deciding that hybrids can be fun, so it’s sticking a turbocharger in one.

Rather than just going the traditional route that Chevrolet did with the Cruze (which uses a smaller engine and a small turbocharger added for extra power), VW put a turbocharged hybrid engine in its new Jetta.

This being the company’s first hybrid in its fleet, VW decided to pull out all the stops. Not only did they design it with less wind resistance, they also put a 7-speed DSG (dual-clutch gearbox) in it, giving the car the fun of a manual ‘box, but the ease of an automatic.

Power comes from a turbocharged 1.4-litre 4-cylinder gasoline engine that pumps out 150 hp, paired up with a 25 hp electric motor, which can run in pure electric mode at 70km/h.

But that’s not all from VW. As a sign of things to come, it unveiled an AWD concept crossover called the Cross Coupe.

The concept uses VW’s familiar TDI diesel engine, combined it with a plug-in hybrid system. Volkswagen says that the concept SUV can sip fuel at a rate of 1.8L/100km.

Chrysler, meanwhile, seems to think a bigger engine isn’t necessarily the worst thing. The American automaker unveiled the new Grand Cherokee, and announced that it will once again offer a diesel engine in this SUV, beginning this spring.

Chrysler says the diesel Grand Cherokee will be able to travel 100 km on 7.1 litres of fuel. This means that it could travel 1,300 km on a single tank of fuel, in theory.

Many companies seem to be going rolling out extended range vehicles. Honda is one of them, unveiling a plug-in hybrid version of its award-winning Accord.

The 2014 Accord PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is going to be powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine which produces 137 hp, paired up with a 124-kilowatt electric motor.

This sedan is expected to get more than 100 mpg-e, and will be able to run on its electric motor for 20 – 28 km. That means that Honda is hoping it will achieve 1.6L/100km.

Ford, meanwhile, is still going strong with its EcoBoost engines. The blue oval`s latest and greatest is a 1-litre 3-cylinder engine which will be sitting in the all new Ford Fiesta.

Already fun to drive, the new Fiesta will be able to go even further on its small tank of gas than previous models.

Cadillac, meanwhile, is giving Canadians a first look at its new ELR. The sister car to GM`s already successful Chevrolet Volt, the ELR has a full driving range of 480 km using both the electric and gas motors.

This Caddy is also the first in the brand`s lineup to offer paddle shifters, letting drivers change the gears when they want to.

But unlike other paddle shifters on hybrids, the ELR`s transmission will also take extra power from the downshift and transfer it into the batteries for storage.

BMW unveiled two “i” series concept cars: the all-new i3 concept and the evolving i8 concept.

The i3 is the first concept car that is purposely built as an electric vehicle – meaning that there are no parts from any other cars in it. It`s also completely built from carbon fiber – a first for a production vehicle.

Like many other electric vehicles, the i3 has a limited range of only 160 km, but BMW says it`ll only take three hours to charge from empty.

Something else to note – the i3 concept is 99 per cent recyclable, and BMW is hoping, once they get a production model ready, to make it 100 per cent recyclable.

The i8 is a plug-in hybrid that can do just under 3L/100km, and travel 35 km on just electric power alone.

With the price of gas edging higher these days, it’s good to see that manufacturers are looking at alternative ways to save on costs, but not sacrifice on fun or practicality that drivers have come to expect from their vehicles. It will be interesting to see what’s to come next year.

AAA Warns New Year's Day Is Worst for Drunk-Driving Deaths

Planning to head out for New Year's Eve? Make sure you get home safe. New Year's Day is the worst day for alcohol-related traffic fatalities, AAA warned today. The group threw its support behind the National Transportation Safety Board's recommendation earlier this month that all 50 states require DUI offenders to have breathalyzer ignition interlocks installed after the first offense. Currently, 17 states have such a mandate, and a study by AAA found nearly 80% of Americans support all states including it.

For partygoers on the 31st, AAA recommends the following:

Before the party kicks off, designate someone who won't drink anything to drive you home.
Never get behind the wheel after any alcohol — even one drink. Never ride with someone who's had anything to drink.
Don't hesitate to take the keys from friends or family who appear impaired.
Call a taxi or a friend if you need a ride.
If you host a party, remind guests to make safe choices, and always offer non-alcoholic beverages.
If you see a drunk driver on the road, stay a safe distance and ask your passengers to call 911, or pull over to a safe location to make the call.
Remember that illegal drugs and certain medications can impair your ability to drive safely.

Nissan Leaf Limo arrives for those electric occasions

This is the Motoramic Dash, a daily roundup of the most interesting news in the automotive world.

The electric-powered Nissan Leaf's struggles to find buyers in the United States has been well covered; Nissan thinks it can still sell 20,000 this year, even though it's sales totaled 2,613 through May. Fortunately, there may be new market opportunities for the Leaf, thanks to a Missouri firm's brainstorm of building the first Leaf limousine. Styling, meet profiling.

Spotted by Electric Vehicle News, the conversion was handled by Imperial Coach Builders of Springfield, Mo., a professional limousine builder whose output generally trends toward the stretchedEscalade/Hummer/Chrysler 300C range. One can only watch so many Hollywood awards ceremonies with stars arriving in hybrids and stumpy electric cars before wondering if there isn't a better way. As the video below shows, the conversion adds an extra set of seats and some amenities to the Leaf without changing its basic character, although I'm not sure Nissan wants to know how the builders extended the power connections between battery pack and motor.

Fenton Honda's Paul Manziel Enjoying Son's Heisman Success

Inside his office at Fenton Honda in Longview, Paul Manziel has an incredible story to share. Manziel returned to work this week after the most amazing trip of his life. Manziel had a front row seat, as his son Johnny was the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy.

"It was a big day," say Manziel. "We've worked for 20 years to get here. For it to all be real is very emotional."

Tears of joy turned into a surreal experience.

"We walked back across the street to hotel and they had a suite for us where they put the Heisman Trophy for the family and we all took pictures with it," said Manziel. "They treated us like royalty the whole time."

In college football, Heisman winners are royalty.

"To meet Doug Flutie and Tony Dorsett and all the guys and watch Flutie play drums and sit with Tony and some of the other guys and just talk and chat and be welcomed into that family, you can't dream of it," said Manziel. "I still pinch myself to see if it was real."

The pictures prove it's real. Rewarding moments from a journey that started in Tyler, before moving to Kerrville.

"Kerrville and Tyler I guess will have to split it," said Manziel of his son's award. "He's (Johnny) lived in both places and made an impact on both towns."

His greatest impact has come in Aggieland. Johnny Football's not done yet.

"What it's done for that school is a shot in the arm," said Manziel. "It couldn't have come at a better time with a change in conferences. It's a blessing."

Fenton Touch It To Win It Car Giveaway in The News

TYLER, TX (KLTV)- Fourteen East Texans were on a mission Friday night, each of them determined to win a car by being the last person touching it.

Longview has a long history with a contest similar to this one.

For years, the ‘Hands on a Hard Body' contest was held at a Longview auto dealership.

Friday, Fenton Motors in Tyler started a new tradition. They say "Touch it to Win it" will be held annually at their dealership near the loop and Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler.

General manager Sam Price says that, as a new business, they want to become part of the community.

"We wanted to do something for the community," said price. "We wanted to give a car away, we thought this was the best way to do it. Make somebody's Christmas come early."

A drawing gave 60 people the chance to win a $25,000 car.

The last person standing got to choose between a 2012 Mazda 6 or a 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

But for some, it's not about the new car.

"I want to take and get a home for my daddy. The house they live in is just falling down around them and this would make a good down payment on something for them to live in," says Jo Rushing, a contestant in the competition.

Contestants must keep one hand on the car at all times.

They get a 15 minute break for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also get a five minute break every hour and a 30 minute break every 24 hours.

"My strategy is rotating my hands without taking both of my hands off the car," says Tessa Walton, another competitor.

"The hardest part so far is, I think, the mind games they're starting to play, you know. They think they're getting me but they're not," competitor Kailee Boyd says.

Boyd's mother won a similar competition, so she says it's in her blood.

"She's like, 'You've got to do this, you've got to stand like this and don't be saying this,' and I'm just like, 'Mom, we've got this,'" says Boyd.

Regardless of their strategy, everyone on Friday claimed they would be the last one standing.

"It means a lot, so you fight for the things you've got to have," says Michael Shelman, a contestant in the competition.

Holiday travel continues steady climb from 2008 level with 43.6 million Americans expected to take Thanksgiving trips

ORLANDO, Fla., (Nov. 13, 2012) – AAA projects 43.6 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, an increase of 0.7 percent over the 43.3 million people who traveled last year. This increase marks the fourth consecutive year of growing holiday travelers since 2008 when Thanksgiving travel fell by 25 percent. The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 25.

Highlights from this year’s 2012 AAA Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Forecast include:

Thanksgiving travelers to total 43.6 million, an increase of 0.7 percent from the 43.3 million who traveled last year
Ninety percent of travelers or 39.1 million to travel by automobile, an increase of 0.6 percent
Holiday air travel to decline to 3.14 million travelers from 3.2 million in 2011
Median spending expected to drop 10 percent to $498, compared to $554 last year. Spending remains consistent with historic averages as Americans continue to prioritize travel while finding ways to economize
Average distance traveled to decline to 588 miles from 706 miles, due in part to a decrease in the number of air travelers and Americans desire to economize budgets
Despite mild improvements in unemployment, the housing market and greater consumer optimism, the economy is still struggling to keep its head above water

“While we do not yet know the full impact that Hurricane Sandy will have on travel from the Mid-Atlantic region, we do know that the impact for many Americans in that region is substantial,” continued Darbelnet.“Thanksgiving travel hit a decade low in 2008 when only 37.8 million Americans traveled,” said AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet. “Since that year we have seen a steady increase in the number of travelers taking to the roads and skies for the holiday. Americans continue to find ways to economize their budgets so they can gather around the holiday table to carve the turkey.”

Impact of gasoline prices on travel plans

AAA estimates the national average price of gasoline will drop to between $3.25-3.40 a gallon by the holiday, similar to last year’s average of $3.32, which was the most expensive average ever on Thanksgiving. Despite the historically high prices paid by motorists this year, the national average has declined by nearly 40 cents a gallon since early October and should continue to drop through the end of the year. The national average price of gas for Thanksgiving from 2007-2011 is $2.75 a gallon.

Wednesday before the holiday is expected to be busiest travel day

The Thanksgiving holiday is unique falling on a Thursday every year. Many people are off from work the Friday after, giving travelers the opportunity to spend more time with family and friends. AAA asked intended travelers which days they would depart for and return from Thanksgiving Travel. Among those surveyed, the majority of travelers plan to leave the Wednesday before the holiday (45 percent) and return the following Sunday (36 percent) with another 25 percent expecting to return on Monday, Nov. 26.

Automobile travel remains dominant mode of transportation, air travel decreases

Approximately 90 percent of travelers or 39.1 million people plan to travel by automobile this Thanksgiving. This is a 0.6 percent increase over the 38.9 million people who traveled by auto last year. Air travel is expected to decrease 1.7 percent as 3.14 million holiday travelers will take to the skies.

Those traveling by air will find lower airfares according to AAA’s Leisure travel Index. For the Thanksgiving holiday the average lowest round-trip rate is $188 for the top 40 U.S. air routes, an 11 percent decrease from last year. Approximately 1.3 million travelers will choose other modes of transportation, including rail, bus and cruise ship.

Hotel rates relatively flat, car rental rates increase 27 percent

According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, Thanksgiving holiday hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are expected to decrease one percent from a year ago, with travelers spending an average of $143 per night compared to $145 last year. Travelers planning to stay at AAA Two Diamond hotels can expect to pay one percent more, at an average cost of $104 per night. Weekend daily car rental rates will average $47, compared to $37 last year.

Average travel distance decreases

According to the survey of intended travelers, the average distance traveled by Americans during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is expected to be 588 miles, which is a decline of 16.7 percent from last year when travelers planned to log 706 miles.

Median spending down ten percent; visiting family, dining and shopping top activities

Median spending is expected to be $498, a 10 percent decrease compared to the expected median spending of intended holiday travelers ($554) in 2011.

While spending time with friends and relatives and dining are primary activities for nearly all holidays, it is even more relevant for Thanksgiving travelers. Therefore it is not surprising that spending time with family and friends (75 percent) and dining (56 percent) are the most popular activities planned by travelers. Despite lower median spending, half of all travelers (50 percent) plan to shop during the holiday which can be expected given Black Friday occurs during the holiday weekend.

In order to celebrate ten years in Canada, Mitsubishi is introducing the 2013 Lancer 10th Anniversary Edition at $19,998.

Used Car Prices Drop

Now that gas prices have eased a bit, demand for fuel-efficient used cars has slipped. By NADA estimates, the biggest loser is the Toyota Prius. The 2011 model's value is expected to average $20,325 in June -- down $900 from May's high of $21,225.

Other cars losing value include the 2009 Toyota Camry (-$675), the 2009 Honda Civic (-$600), and the 2010 Hyundai Elantra (-$500).

If you're shopping for one of those vehicles, of course, that's great news, but if you own one of them, don't fret: your investment is still way up for the year.

If you own that 2011 Prius, for example, the value of your car shot up $2,350 between January and May. So, even if you were to sell it in June for $900 less than you could've in May, you'd still come out $1,450 ahead.

And NADA says that demand for used cars will remain strong -- and it will do so despite lower gas prices, and despite the fact that we're done with the busy spring shopping season. On average, cars will fall about 2% in the near future, with truck values dipping 1%.
