Huge quantities of carbon dioxide due to industrialization and cutting down of trees affect the carbon dioxide ratio and causes the phenomena of "global warming". This "global warming" thus caused, melts polar ice caps and in turn affects rising water levels. These factors further cause extinction of birds and animals and submersion of land, countries and cities into water. Besides, increased carbon dioxide lead to acid rains and smog, which is a combination of fog and suspended gas together with other air pollutants, which cause respiratory diseases and other ailments.

Stringent procedures have been employed to curb the emission of this gas world over, yet a lot needs to be done in this regard. Carbon dioxide is primarily emitted through the exhaustion pipes of our vehicles. Thus, a careful analysis and shift in our paradigm is the need of hour. Switching over to alternative fuels sources, economizing on travel times and choice of modes of transport as well as a more responsible attitude towards this ever growing threat would in the long run save our Earth from imminent disasters. One of the major fallout of increased carbon dioxide emission is depletion of ozone layer and global warming.

One of the main cause of carbon dioxide emission is through our transport systems. Adopting some elementary steps that can assist us in reduction of carbon dioxide emission is by effectively scheduling and managing our transport systems.

1. Transportation by land:

Clever and planned usage of private vehicles is one major step towards minimizing carbon dioxide emission. As individuals, we by being more accommodative and vigilant can at least reduce the share of emission that we cause by using public transports, bicycles and walking whenever we can although providing a better public transport system is equally a responsibility of the government. Replacement of commercial diesel vehicles with small gas based or electric based vans is another efficient way to reduce carbon dioxide emission at the industrial front.

2. Transportation by sea:

Shipping accounts for about 90% of global transportation especially of oils and goods. Effective legislation and understanding between various countries can lead to reduction in carbon dioxide emission. Scheduling logistics, planning routes and using better propellers can help cut emissions by about 15%. Use of alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power to propel the ship are some conscientious options available while we still have time to save our earth form the manmade impending threats.

3. Transportation by air:

Again a global understanding is warranted with regard to air transportation. Reduced flight speeds, decrease in waiting time at the airbase as well as before landing, use of solar energy to power the craft, converting shorter air routes to high speed electric train routes and replacing fossil fuels with bio fuels to run the airplane are some constructive positive steps to reduce carbon dioxide emission. Research on use of unique and innovative materials that can be used to make the airplane lighter and reduce air drag would also prove to be an effective premise in this direction.

A better understanding of issues and taking onus on ourselves for the fate of our misdoings has never been as mandatory as in today's times. A global natural gas surplus is fading sooner than anticipated. The global recession, combined with a gush in natural gas creation from inexhaustible shale formations in the United States has soared supplies of blue-burning fuel, and reduced prices in late 2008. International Energy Agency is working to find out the solution to the problem of energy crisis. The petroleum reserves are already being used and IEA is planning to put 5 million electric vehicles on road all over the world by 2020. The concern for oil security is the biggest factor supporting electrically based mobility system. The main aim is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the transportation sector and preserve liquid fossil fuels for shipping over-the-road trucking and airline transportation.

It might sound weird but it is an environmentally sustainable option.

What difference will it make?

This form of alternative energy option will reduce five to ten percent of petrol or diesel consumption which though is small but will definitely create a huge difference over years. New revenue will be generated for the leading whiskey producers and an eco friendly source of energy will be generated.

Problems:

New researches keep coming up every day but only few are feasible. This technique of generating energy is very old but till now no major get through has been come up so far.

2. Coffee-powered car

A U.S. company has successfully created new electric cars that will be motorized using metal thorium. Thorium occurs naturally and is slightly radioactive in nature. Heat could be generated by warming small blocks of thorium in thorium-based laser. This process generates steam in mini turbines using water and in turn electricity is generated to drive the car.

What difference will it make?

Using thorium as an alternative to power cars is a good option because huge amount of unexplored thorium resources are available throughout the world. U.S alone has 440,990 tones of thorium followed by Australia. But according to some organizations India is expected to have largest thorium deposits ranging from 319,667 to 716,490 tons.

Problems:

Though large sites are expected to be rich in thorium deposits but its distribution is poor. Also the process is quite expensive and converting thorium into alternate fuel will take more years of research.

4. Car running on human waste

What’s new?

A car named Bio-Bug has been created by British engineers which is powered using biogas produced from human waste. This car is supposed to be a feasible alternative to petrol vehicles. Human waste from just 70 houses was enough to generate power to run car for 10,000 miles. The starved bugs without oxygen break down into biodegradable material in an anaerobic digestion and produce methane. The performance was remarkable and if this technique becomes feasible it will be a very good alternate to save fossil fuels.

What difference will it make?

Almost 20 million cubic meters bio-gas is produced at Wessex Water's sewage treatment plant in Avonmouth every year. This much amount of bio-gas in generated only from human wastes. This gas can be used to power cars without compromising with their performance. It’s a green method of powering cars without producing carbon footprints.

Problems:

The process is under work and is not fully complete. Researchers are working on it to make it fully feasible and commercial.

Peugeot Velv

The French government has always been enthusiastic about promoting a green living. It has made ardent efforts in the past including the enactment of a tax system based on ‘bonus-malus’ to reward citizens who purchase and maintain their vehicles and help reduce carbon emissions and at the same time penalize buyers who don’t adhere to green purchasing. Recently it formed a consortium in collaboration with research laboratories for developing the tricycle Peugeot Velve. Read the following to get an insight into the concept.

To adequately handle the future mobility challenge, a new concept Peugeot Velve was showcased in France in a forum organized by the French Environment Agency and French Agency for Energy Management (ADEME). This new city vehicle was developed by a consortium of French companies like Michelin and Valeo along with other research laboratories. The electric gull wing drives on a 20KW electric motor, powered by a lithium-ion battery of capacity 8.5KWH. It has a range of 100Km and will accelerate to a top speed of 110 km/hr. The car has a powerful grill and a front apron that makes it resemble a broad and strong scooter. The design of the vehicle is a fusion between the BB1 and the EX1; improving the aesthetics of BB1 and topping it with a double rear axle form the EX1. It offers a ride for three people; the driver sits in the center and the two passengers on the right and left behind respectively. It meets all the standard safety regulations, despite a light weight of 650 pounds. Easy drive through congested places, the Peugeot Velve has a turning radius of 7.20 meters. Comes with a special feature of identifying the nearest charging stations that can be reached with the charge left.

Green Factor

The consortium in collaboration with the numerous research laboratories was set up so that the project would collectively achieve the objective of reducing the total amount of on board energy consumption. Leroy Somer, GNK and Valeo contributed their expertise to create the 20Kw electric motor. Johnson Control offered the lithium-ion battery. Valeo developed the heating system and the signal and power cables were designed by Leoni. This could be done using an electric motor and instant available maximum torque plus the light weight of the car. The total energy consumption of the Velve per kilometer is 85WH, which puts is parallel to environmental footprint of a train trip. The target consumers who will eventually benefit from this car will be the corporate fleets, self service Autolib’s, traditional rental companies and even second car buyers who are looking for an environment friendly option.

The Power Train

The power train systems have three main components, namely the motor, the battery and the inverter. The Velve has a specially designed motor of 20KW that will deliver a total power of 26HP with autonomy of 62 miles. It will consume only 85WH per kilometer to reach the top speed of 68MPH, which will equal the environment footprint of a train trip.

The highs

Developed keeping in mind the need of the citizens of France and they congested street planning, PSA developed the Velve. It is an electric city gull wing with hinged glass doors and right above the passengers head, there is a span of glass dome that ends in the rear of the car like a strong slot like glow. The Zwilligsreifen with the big fenders is another highlight. The lows

3. Romet’s 4E prototype neighborhood electric vehicles

The Romet 4E is a NEV classed vehicle that can easily fill the void between bikes and cars. A prototype from Romet Motors, a Polish automobile manufacturer, the 4E is powered by a 4 kW DC motor. With a top speed of 28 mph, 4E falls under the speed criteria set for NEVs.

With two prototype neighborhood electric vehicle will run on power supplied by either lead acid or lithium-ion battery pack with an operating range exceeding 62 miles. Much cheaper than gas

Seeing the effect of global warming all over the world, people are becoming conscious about their contribution towards the environment. The rapid switching to the environment friendly products and vehicles is the result of same consciousness. People across many countries have started using electric bikes for various strong reasons. Electric bikes can help you remain fit even if you have busy work routine. Your body gets automatically exercised whenever you use your bicycle to go to office, to shop or to meet friends. It is an economical mode of communication. Maintenance cost is very low and it costs less per mile of commute. They do not run on gas therefore there is no need to visit petrol pumps for refill.

Can this be better?

Market is flooded with a large variety of electric bikes each having some unique features. The difference lies in choosing the right bike for right place. For example, lead acid batteries are available at reasonable prices and can be easily recycled but they have a limited life span. The electric power per charge generated by the bicycle lasts for range of 15-40 miles only. The maximum acceleration offered by these electric bikes is limited to 20mph therefore relying on these bikes to reach destination on time won’t be a good option.

2. Lost luxury

There is a very limited scope of luxury in any electric bike. Also, it’s a single commuter vehicle. Seat is not comfortable and there is no scope for additional lavish enhancements. Traveling with family is not on list. Even for the single rider there are no provisions against harsh weather and adverse road conditions. Most of the bikes remain sidelined for months during severe winter.

3. Battery charge

Battery charging system is also not very convenient. It can take four to eight hours to charge completely and looking for electrical power outlet is not an easy task because there are very few such outlets in cities.

Can this be avoided?

Some new concepts have been introduced to improve efficiency of these bikes. “Energy generation” is one such technology which uses kinetic energy generated through braking to rejuvenate lithium-ion batteries. The bicycle has thus an improved pedal power by capturing kinetic energy. This technology has been used in Lexus Hybrid Bicycle.

The ugly

1. Non renewable electricity source

Generating electricity is not totally green as we imagine. Coal plays an important role in electricity generation across the world. In fact, 41 percent of the major electricity is generated from coal refined power plants. These coal refined power plants generate large amount of CO2 which is one major cause of global warming.

2. Range

The range offered by these bikes is low which makes them impractical for long distance journeys. They can be used only within the city and taking them out of the city is not at all a viable option because nor is it safe and not feasible.

Why are we so critical?

Human life has been threatened by global warming and toxic emissions and people are becoming aware of hazards of messing up with the environment. The main reason for getting critical is that these no-emission bikes which are considered as the most eco-friendly source of commuting are not totally green. The electricity generated for electric motors is not completely generated using renewable sources. Still, 41 percent electricity is harnessed using coal power stations which pollute environment in the same way as by depleting fossil fuels and carbon emissions.

The bottom line

Now, if we have to answer the question that is electric bike a viable alternative to car? The answer will be 'yes' but only for short commutes, that too only in well planned cities with proper roads and traffic system. Though, we can’t ignore the extra benefit of fitness achieved while using bicycle for commuting, there is a need to improve dependency on renewable resources for clean and green electricity so that electric bikes can fulfill the motive of their creation.

It’s probably safe to say that few people have ever heard of the Wilhelm Gustloff, making it reasonable to ask why it would make it into my top ten most famous shipwreck list. The reason is because this list is not just about the most famous, but the most significant shipwrecks as well, in which case this German liner easily fits the bill. What makes it so? The fact that it was responsible for the largest single loss of life in maritime
history when the overloaded vessel—fleeing the advancing Red Army into northern Poland in the winter of 1944-45—left the port of Danzig (modern day Gdansk) one cold January evening in 1945 only to be sunk by a Russian submarine shortly after reaching the open sea. Not only did it sink in a matter of minutes, but with a water temperature just a degree or two above freezing, even those not trapped below decks had a minimal chance of surviving in the frigid waters of the Baltic. The final death toll from this horrific event? No one will ever know the precise number of people who died when the Gustloff went down as the ship had no passenger list and, as a refugee ship, was loaded to three times her normal capacity. However, best estimates are that as many as 10,000 people were jammed onboard the ship, with a mere 900 or so managing to be rescued from the frigid waters, making it the greatest loss of life from a single ship sinking in history.

While not the most famous passenger liner ever to sink, when the luxurious flagship of the Italian Line collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm in heavy fog off the coast of Massachusetts in July of 1956 and sank a few hours later, it came as quite a shock to the world. What made it such a surprise was not the scale of the catastrophe—only 46 of the 1660 people on board died as a result of the collision—but the fact that
such a disaster was even possible in an age of radar and high tech ship-to-ship radio communications. It was also famous for being one of the few major ship sinking ever filmed while it was happening, giving the world a bird’s-eye view of the proud and beautiful ship’s final moments and forever cementing her in maritime legend. Eventually the fault for the collision was placed on both captains for not only plunging through the pea-thick soup at over twenty knots, but for managing to completely misinterpret what their counterpart was doing. It might have even been funny had not it ended in the loss of life and the sinking of one of the most expensive ships ever built. Today the Andrea Doria remains one of the world’s most popular diving sites (it’s even referred to as the “Mount Everest” of deep-sea diving), though because of its depth and the rapidly deteriorating condition of the wreck, it remains a treacherous site to dive on—as evidenced by the fact that it has claimed the lives of half a dozen divers over the years.

Although ZEM is not into production anymore, it did gave David a unique idea that might be used for mass production some day.

Andrew Angelloti, a 16 year old, has done something really amazing, he has turned his 1988 Mazda pick up truck into an electric vehicle. This all he did using his own savings (around $6000) to make an EV which runs around 40 miles per charge and has a top speed of 55 MPH.

5. Alaska teen converts his own electric car, a 1971 Super Beetle

A member of the Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA), Bart Grabman has converted his own car, a 1971 super beetle, into an electric car. Doing a lot of internet research, this high school senior got the idea from one of the speeches he heard at the organization. The idea of self converting a truck into an EV struck him and he started working on his project. The result was his very own electric car.

Ohio resident, Deitrich Ludwig, is just 16 and he's the youngest person on earth to build a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup electric truck. The teenager built his own EV by replacing its engine and exhaust and replaced it with an emission free electric driven train, a dc electric motor, and a few batteries. Setting a new world record, Deitrich is helping the world in his own way.

8. Teenager mods Ford Escort to run on electricity

Not wanting to spend too much on gas, Andrew Loader, a 17 year old, converted his old Ford Escort into an EV. Andrew hardly had any knowledge about automobiles, but by using internet as his source of knowledge, he changed the fuel based engine and put in its place some batteries and an old forklift engine. The car runs about 11 miles in one charge and goes to the top speed of 38 mph, enough for a ride back from school.

9. Teenage students hope to win the Automotive X-Prize with Hybrid Attack

Students of West Philedelphia High School have worked painstakingly at this project and why not, for this could win them a $10 million Automotive X Prize. The car is called Hybrid attack and has the power to go from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds.

Hailing from Uzbekistan, a 15 year old student has invented something everyone was trying to do, to make a car on a renewable source of energy. Maruf Karimov, the young student, has been able to start a conventional internal combustion engine with air pressure. The car has been able to move a few meters, but is, as Maruf states, quite slow. The idea, however, can be a seed for further inventions and a greener tomorrow.

Though a comparatively tiny vessel whose foundering during a gale off notorious Cape Hatteras, Virginia on new year’s eve, 1862, taking sixteen of her crew down with her, was barely noticed by the press at the time, the sinking spelled a tragic end to one of the most revolutionary ships of its era. The brainchild of a little known naval engineer by the name of John Ericsson, the Monitor, in being the first all-metal, turreted warship in history, became the prototype for what would become the standard for warship design for the next century and a half. Derisively called a “cheesebox on a raft” by both sides, the little ship changed the face of naval warfare forever when it battled the South’s own ironclad warship, the CSS Virginia, to a draw off Hampton Roads, Virginia in March of 1862. While the battle did little to affect the outcome of the war, it signaled the end of wooden sailing vessels with fixed cannons and initiated the age of steam-driven, ironclad warships with revolving turrets, making the battle—and the ship—one of the most important in history. The ship’s precise location remained unknown for over a century until it was located 16 miles off the Virginia coast in 1973, after which is was designated a national historic landmark, making it off-limits to divers and salvagers. Eventually, however, the government gave authorization for elements of the ship to be brought to the surface, resulting in the recovery of its massive steam engine and, in 2002, its revolutionary turret. The site is now under the supervision of NOAA, with many artifacts from the ship, including her turret, cannon, propeller, anchor, engine and some personal effects of the crew, being put on display at the Mariners’ Museum of Newport News, Virginia.

While most people imagine the vast oceans to be the most dangerous waters to sail upon, some of the roughest waters in the world are actually experienced on the Great Lakes, which has more non-war related shipwrecks per square mile than any other body of water in the world. Without doubt, the most famous of these took place on November 10, 1975, when the gigantic ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald, at one time the largest ship on the Great Lakes and holder of numerous tonnage records, was caught in a vicious November gale and, after hours of battling high winds and 30-foot waves, suddenly disappeared from radar without as much as a single distress call, taking all twenty-nine members of her crew down with her. The loss would likely have remained little known outside the Great Lakes maritime community had not singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot written a popular song about the sinking in 1976, immortalizing the ship’s demise and making her the most famous shipwreck on the Great Lakes. While the precise cause of the sinking has never been determined, later surveys done on the wreck revealed that the 800-foot long craft broke in two, suggesting it either “bottomed out” on the shallow lake bottom and broke in two, or it was wrenched in two by a rogue wave and plunged to the bottom of the lake in mere minutes. Whatever the cause, the ship remains off-limit to divers as a grave and continues to serve as a reminder that even the largest vessels are no match for the Great Lakes when—as the song says—the gales of November come early.

Steamship S.S. Republic, 1865

When this Civil War-era side-wheel steamship sank during a violent gale off the Georgia coast in October, 1865, it went down with something other than the ordinary goods most vessels of the era carried. In the case of the Republic, her holds were filled with tons of silver and gold coins and ingots being transported from the West Coast to help rebuild the war-ravaged south, making her loss an incalculable financial blow to the country at a time when it was still struggling to regain its economic legs after four years of civil war. (The only positive thing from the sinking was that the ship’s entire crew and passengers managed to get off safely before the ship foundered, making it one of the few famous shipwrecks that did not result in loss of life.) The ship’s precise location remained unknown until 2003, when she was finally located after an extensive search some 100 miles off the Georgia coast in nearly 1,700 feet of water. The subsequent recovery effort not only yielded one of the largest caches of gold and silver coins in history, but included a fascinating assortment of 19th century goods that revealed much about life in the mid-nineteenth century. By the time the recovery was concluded, over 51,000 U.S. gold and silver coins had been recovered along with nearly 14,000 artifacts, making it not only the richest find in the history of salvaging, but the highest-tech archaeological excavation ever conducted. So successful—and lucrative—was the expedition, in fact, that it set a precedence for the emerging field of deep-water shipwreck exploration and recovery.
