Sirin Labs Launches Solarin: A Military-Grade Super Smart Phone Worth $14,000+

I never needed to buy a smartphone that had “military-grade” protection, but not all smartphone users are alike. Some people may value insanely complex security – or they just like the idea of using something that’s “military-grade.” The Solarin, pictured below, is supposed to be a high-end phone that has high-end security features built in. Unfortunately, it comes from a company that has no track record, it costs $14,000+, and it’s not really as high-end as you would have hoped.

Sirin Labs is a company that came out of nowhere to announce this phone, which has components that likely cost under $200 all together. The device runs an unknown operating system — though the image above seems to suggest it’s Android — and it features military-grade encryption as well as a “Security Switch” that will put the phone in a “shielded mode” and let you make secure phone calls.

“Solarin comes with Zimperium state-of-the-art mobile threat protection that thwarts the broadest array of advanced device, network, and application mobile cyberattacks, without impairing usability or functionality of a top-of-the-range smartphone,” the company explained in its press release. “In addition, Solarin incorporates the most advanced privacy technology, currently unavailable outside the agency world. Sirin Labs partnered with KoolSpan to integrate chip-to-chip 256-bit AES encryption, the same technology that militaries around the world use to protect their communications, offering the strongest possible mobile privacy protection worldwide.”

The phone’s features aren’t high-end by this year’s standards, but the Solarin would be a top of the line device in 2015. It packs a 5.5-inch 2K display, a Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 23.8-megapixel camera with laser-assisted autofocus, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera and a 4,040 mAh battery. It even comes with mesmerizing Wi-Fi capabilities, including WiGig (802.11ad) multi-gigabit Wi-Fi technology, and 802.11ac 2×2 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi support that’ll be useless in most households. Of course, if the phone doesn’t run Android then you’d end up with an overpriced 5.5-inch handset that can’t run any apps, and all that military-grade encryption probably isn’t worth it. But digging deeper on the company’s website, you discover the phone indeed packs Android under the hood, though it’s not on the latest release. Instead, it’ll run Android 5.1.1 out of the box.

OK, so maybe it’s a little more expensive to make than some other flagship handsets, but if you need a $14,000+ phone to make sure your chats and calls are encrypted, then you might have bigger problems to deal with than coming up with $14K.

What is Xposed Framework?

How do I install Xposed Framework?

To install Xposed Framework, consult the linked thread from the XDA Developers forum and note once again that your device will need to be rooted and with a customer recovery installed. Since November 2015, support for the Xposed Framework extends to Android Marshmallow-based ROMs.

Individual modules are downloaded and installed from within the Xposed Framework app or from the Xposed Module Repository website. Below is a selection of the favorite modules available for Xposed Framework.

1. LockScreen Mods

LockScreen Mods is a simple and effective lockscreen shortcut creator. There are six slots in which you can assign apps to be quickly launched without unlocking your device.

It looks good, it's useful and it works; LockScreen Mods is a classic example of how Xposed Framework can provide worthy improvements to your handset.

2. XMultiWindow

This module is convenient for multitasking with a large screen. It allows you to make use of a multiwindow-style layout as can be found on Samsung phablets (among other devices).

You can work with multiple applications simultaneously with apps organized in windows at the top and bottom (or left and right) of the screen. To get the best out of this module, you should probably be using a device with a 5-inch screen or larger but I'm guessing you probably do.

3. Never Sleep

This isn't a particularly new module but it remains useful. Do you get frustrated when your screen turns off when it shouldn't? Never Sleep seeks to solve this.

Once installed, you can create a list of applications which will prevent your phone from sleeping. If, for example, you want your display to remain on while using a PDF reader, simply add that app to the list. Piece of cake.

4. WhatsAppX

Welcome back to BizzleTech World to am going to show you guys how to shutdown your computer using your cell phone, the most important part of this tutorial is that both your cell phone and computer(PC) must be internet connect, Follow below step to your success.

The Requirements or Tools for this Tutorial

(1) One cell phone with GPRS or Internet Connection to send Messages enabled.
(2) One Email ID
(3) Microsoft Outlook on the PC to be put to shut down.
(4) Must have internet connection on your PC.

Using this method the user can shutdown, restart, hibernate the Computer just by sending an email from their cell phone. All you need to have is Microsoft outlook which comes with Microsoft word. The Microsoft outlook should be installed on the PC you wish to shut down. First you need to create a batch file to perform shutdown, restart etc. you can write them down yourself.

Note: you can complete this trick in every operating system but, here I’m representing this tutorial in “Windows 8 Pro”.

Steps To Follow:

1. Open your notepad and type the following:

c:\wondows\system32\shutdown -s - f -t 00

And save it as shutdown.bat (Executable file)

2. Open your Microsoft outlook. Make sure that it is already configured for your email id, otherwise configured it here step by step for your email id.

Note: you can complete this trick on Microsoft Office Outlook (any version like 2003, 2007, 2010). Here, I’m doing on MS Office Outlook 2010.

After opening Outlook 2010, click on File in upper side left hand corner
Now, click on “Add Account” and Set up your account detail
Now, click on “Next”. This auto account setup will configure your email server settings automatically. You can do this manually by selecting manually configure option in last step.

After this setup, finally click on Finish.

3. Now we will need to set Microsoft outlook in such a way that outlook checks you email every one minute. This can be set by going to “Send/Receive” tab-> “Send/Receive Group” -> “Define Send/Receive Groups”. After setting this click on close button.

4. Now, This step is to manipulate our computer (MS-Outlook) with Email message as for this, we have to set up of rules and alerts on outlook. So, again go to-> Tools – Rules and Alerts. Click on E-mail Rules tab. In new window select Check messages when they arrive and click Next.

5. Now in next page, check on, on this machine only and with specific words in the subject. After checking these two values, click on specific words underlined.

6. Search Text window will open, in the input field type the command that shuts down the PC. You can use any commands. For prevention of accidental execution i kept %shutdown% as a command.

Click on Add button after you are done and click on OK.

7. Now click on Next. In the next window check mark on start application. In the lower screen, click on application link.

8. Now you’ll be welcomed to your familiar file open window. Load all files. And select the batch file that you’ve created to shut down your PC.

9. Click on Next, again click on next (don’t choose any things in this step). And finally click on Finish button.

10. You’ll have %shutdown% alert shown in the E-mail Rules tab.

11. Now, when you send a message from your phone to your e-mail address with the Subject %shutdown% your computer will trigger shutdown.bat file and instantly executes the command in that batch file finally leading to shutdown the PC.

Tablo launched its live TV and DVR app for Apple TV

Looking to cut the cord and have a new Apple TV? A new app from Tablo can help. Launching shortly for Apple TV 4th generation devices — the new models that include access to the Apple TV App Store — the app allows you to both stream live television and watch recorded programs. The app works in conjunction with the company’s Tablo DVR, a $200 device that can access broadcast programs it receives via a connected over-the-air antenna, as well as record those programs to a hard drive for later viewing.

The company had promised this January that it had this app in the works, and would be launching it sometime this spring. Clearly, it didn’t meet that deadline.

The Tablo DVR, for those unfamiliar, is something of an alternative to TiVo. It’s competitively priced at $200 (for two tuners), while ongoing access to its TV Guide data is an optional and affordable $5 per month. And if you only really use Tablo for watching live television, you can easily skip paying for the guide data, which is mainly helpful for managing future recordings.

For more serious TV watchers, a four-tuner device is also available for $300.

Tablo is not the simplest system to set up for non-technical users because it’s not an all-in-one solution. Instead, it requires you to attach your own external drive to serve as storage for its recordings. The advantage to this, of course, is that you’re in control of how much storage you have available and can expand that at will. However, it does mean you’ll have to buy another piece of hardware beyond the antenna, and you’ll have to make room for more equipment in your media center.

That said, once you get past the initial installation hurdles, the software itself is fairly straightforward to use. The Apple TV app offers a clean user interface, complete with colorful thumbnail images for show titles, and makes it easy to move between watching live TV or viewing your recordings.

Plus, the app will work with Apple TV’s voice-enabled remote, allowing you to ask Siri to skip the commercials or move forward or back in the stream (e.g. “Skip ahead two minutes” or “Go back to the start”). You can also just press the pause button instead, then swipe back and forth in the scrubber while viewing the fast-forward previews.

In the 1.0 release of the app, users will be able to watch live TV, and view and schedule recordings for programs airing in the next 24 hours. You can schedule both one-time and series recordings, says the company. Other features are planned for the months ahead, which will focus bringing feature parity between the Apple TV app and those on other platforms. That means things like the TV View, Movies View and Prime TV View will make their way over to Apple TV, as well.

In addition to Apple TV, Tablo offers apps for a number of platforms, including Roku, iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, Fire tablets, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, web, Kodi and Plex.

It’s also worth pointing out that Tablo is not the only way to watch live TV on Apple TV. The Channels app works with the HDHomeRun TV tuner to offer similar functionality. Meanwhile, Dish’s Sling TV also just launched on Apple TV this week, but is focused mainly on live television, with a smaller selection of on-demand content. Plus, its channel lineup is cable TV, not broadcast networks, nor does it offer DVR functionality.

Tablo says its Apple TV app version 1.0 has been published to the App Store, where it’s pending approval. It will be live shortly, the company says.

1. CONTINUALLY POP OUT CD DRIVE USING NOTEPAD

4. MAKE A PERSONAL LOG-BOOK OR A DIARY

A special feature which allows us to make a log exists in notepad. Using it we can make logs of stuff as notepad will put the date and time for us whenever we open a specific type of Log file. For doing this, just type ‘.LOG’ in the notepad and save it under any name that you wish. Now whenever you’ll open this particular file, you’ll see that notepad automatically enters the date and time at which it is opened, and then you can make a log record and save the log.

5. MATRIX EFFECT

Now we’ll discuss a Notepad trick that can turn our command prompt into something that looks like it just came out of the matrix movie, or maybe something that looks like something straight out of a hacker’s system. For doing this, all you need to do is paste the following code in notepad

now you’ll need to save this file with an extension .bat , and upon clicking on the .bat file that you have created, you’ll see something like this.

A small tweak to customize this cool effect is that you can change the value in front of color, i.e. 02 in color 02 to any other value like 03 for instance; this will change the color of the text that appears in the command prompt.

Assign different values to the color, and have fun.

6. TOGGLE CAPSLOCK REPEATEDLY USING NOTEPAD

You can play with someone’s computer, or maybe your own computer by writing a script that can toggle Caps Lock repeatedly.

According to this trick, if you enter the flight number of the flight that struck the twin tower, i.e. Q33N in notepad and then change the font type to ‘wingdings’ and the font size to 72, then you’ll see a very strange thing.
It is a very cool trick, but unfortunately is a hoax as no such flight struck the twin towers.

10. CHANGING HEADER AND FOOTER IN NOTEPAD

Go to File ->Page setup in notepad, and then in the fields for header and footer, type any of these codes.

11. DELETING STARTUP FILES USING NOTEPAD

A way to devastate a PC would be to remove the files that help it to start up. Though not advisable, this is the code that has the power to do it.

And if you’re a computer nut like me, tweaking the OS is always the fun part. Discovering and implementing power user tips are my favorite part of getting a major new version of an OS. I still remember back when DOS 5.0 came out, and I was running DOS 3.3, and I got to try all these new things to optimize my 286. And when I upgraded from Windows/286 to Windows 3.0, I felt like my life had changed.
Nostalgia aside, here’s what you need to know to amp up your Windows 10 install and take it to the next level.

The awesomely named GodMode brings up a special menu that puts lots of settings together in one place. To enable it, create a new folder anywhere on your root drive and rename it GodMode.
It will create a special icon that when you click on it shows you a beautiful advanced control panel.
One of the best things about Windows 10 is how it handles virtual desktops. The fact that it finally handles them at all, out of the box, is a great step, since Mac OS X and Linux users have had that capability for a long time. It lets you set up a series of tasks and windows on your desktop, your email and Twitter window on another, and a third for general Web browsing and research. To get started, click the Task View icon on the taskbar (immediately to the right of the Search box), or hold down the Windows key (abbreviated throughout as Win) and Tab. You can also drag an app to a new virtual desktop by bringing it over to the +New Desktop option at the lower right.

When you’re first setting up Windows 10, make sure to select a Custom install so you can modify the privacy settings, instead of going with the Express install. (If you already installed it, no worries; you can fix it all in Settings). Otherwise you’ll find yourself agreeing to all sorts of private data sharing — and while Windows 10 is free for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, it’s not a free product in and of itself — so there’s no reason to share your personal information when it’s not required.
Windows 10 lets you personalize your desktop more thoroughly than before. Head to Start > Settings > Personalization > Colors, and choose Show color on taskbar and Start Menu. You can also tell it to automatically pick a color from your wallpaper and apply it underneath icons of open apps, and you can remove the Start Menu’s translucent option.

You can finally print a document (or rather, save it) as PDF without using a third-party utility. This makes it much easier to save and distribute documents that aren’t easily modified. Another long overdue feature makes it in under the radar.
Instead of getting ambushed whenever Microsoft decides to push out a patch, you can schedule restarts to install updates by going to Start > Settings > Updates and Recovery > Windows Update. You can do this for future updates as well by selecting Notify to Schedule Restart.
If you’re thinking of taking the Windows 10 plunge, but don’t want to disturb your machine that’s currently running just fine, here’s how to install Windows 10 in a virtual machine first. Note that this is different than the virtual desktops I mentioned above; it’s virtualizing the entire OS within another OS (your existing one).

Windows Explorer windows are a lot more useful this time around, thanks to a new Home tab (pictured above). It makes file copies a cinch. If you look at the top left of the window, you’ll see a new Quick Access group that lets you navigate to recently accessed folders. That makes it much easier to maintain a fast workflow as you navigate around your computer’s file system. And while File Explorer defaults to the Quick Access view, if you don’t like it, you can set it back to This PC by choosing View > Options > Open File Explorer > This PC.

The new Start Menu is such a huge improvement over what came with Windows 8.1 that it’s almost impossible to describe the relief. It combines the best elements of Windows 7 and Windows 8. And it’s also fully customizable. You can resize tiles in the Start menu by right-clicking them and choosing Resize, and then selecting a size from the pop-up menu. You can also unpin them or uninstall them completely. I admit the first thing I did is unpin all of Microsoft’s tiles and then shrink the size of the menu so it looks a lot like Windows 7 (pictured).

For a while, during some of the Windows 10 Technical Preview builds, you could pin the Recycle Bin to the taskbar, which makes it a bit more like OS X. Unfortunately, that functionality seems to be gone in the release version, though you can still pin it to the Start Menu as a tile.
A lot of Windows 10 utilities underneath the service still look the same as they did in Windows 7 and Windows 8. But one of the hidden tweaks is in the Command Prompt — head over to Properties and you’ll suddenly find you can enable a host of customizations, including a transparent background, resizing the window, and word wrap.

If you’re on a laptop and your battery is running low, Windows 10 is smart enough to begin throttling back background services and other threads so that you can squeeze the last bit of battery life out of your machine. To enable Battery Saver, click the Start menu, and head to Settings | System | Battery Saver.

Ever notice how when you hover your mouse cursor over a window and try and scroll, you still can’t, because the window wasn’t active? Turn this feature on in Settings | Devices | Mouse and Touchpad and you’ll be able to do just that.
Here are some keyboard shortcuts you may want to be aware of — ones that will really help your daily workflow:

If you’ve got a laptop, or a desktop with a microphone attached, click the search field and select the Notebook icon on the left. Then click Settings and click “Let Cortana respond to “Hey Cortana.” Now Cortana will listen for your commands. Cortana can also use Google instead of Bing, even though Microsoft really wants you to use the latter. Install the Chrometana extension in Chrome, or just install Firefox and make that your default browser; both will accomplish the task of removing Bing from Cortana’s brain.

The new Maps app lets you work offline (Remember those old Microsoft Maps programs?); click Settings > Download or Update Maps, and then select the continent and country you want.
Windows 10 finally shows some real Xbox integration, and you can use it to log into your Xbox Live account. But more importantly, you can use it to stream Xbox One games locally on your PC. You’ll have to enable it first on the Xbox One under Settings | Preferences | Allow game streaming, and then on the PC in the Xbox application. (Interestingly, Microsoft is also going the other way and adding keyboard and mouse support to the Xbox One — not that you’ll need that, since you’ve already got a PC.)

You can now record videos of apps or games using the Game DVR function. Press the Windows Key + G, click ‘Yes, this is a game box,’ and then you’ll see options to manipulate the recording.
The new Settings panel is easy to navigate and makes more sense than the crufty old Control Panel, but you’ll still need the latter to access some deeper options in the system. It’s easy to call up, even though it’s hidden; just right click on the Start button on the bottom left of the screen and choose it from the pop-up menu, or type Control Panel in the Search bar at the bottom left in the taskbar. When you right-click the Start button, you’ll see all kinds of useful things there, such as Computer Management and Disk Management; for what it’s worth, those options bring you right back to the familiar Windows 7-style apps in each case.

Notifications are a giant pain in Windows 10; there’s just too many of them, and some are unnecessary. Turn ’em off by heading to Start > Settings > System > Notifications and actions, and turn off Windows tips and specific app notifications (you’ll need to scroll down for the latter).
Are you sick of the occasional Office ads that pop up on the desktop? So are we. To kill them, right-click on Get Office in the Start Menu and uninstall it.

June 15, 2016 - SMS messages have now been integrated into the Facebook Messenger Android app, Facebook announced on its website. Instead of using a separate messaging app for SMS conversations, users have the option of including these texts in the Messenger app. SMS messages will appear in purple while Facebook messages will appear in the traditional blue. In addition, SMS in messenger supports rich content such as stickers, emojis, GIFS and more.

"We hope that this new choice will bring the convenience of being able to access all your messages in one place, making your messaging a lot simpler and helping you stay on top of your conversations," said Facebook.

This feature isn't enabled by default, you must go to the settings menu in the Facebook Messenger app, tap SMS and then enable Default SMS app.

Responding to why this feature wasn't in place on iOS, Facebook said, "iOS doesn't currently support app permissions for accessing text messages/SMS." Another win for Android.

April 21, 2016 - Facebook has announced that you can now carry out group calls on Facebook Messenger. Within any group conversation, just press on the phone icon to initiate a group call. The service is currently equipped to handle up to 50 people, suggesting a clear line of sight on this being used in the workplace. No word yet on whether this feature will be expanded to provide a video service, but with the feature in the works for WhatsApp, it seems safe to assume it will arrive sooner or later.

March 9, 2016 - Facebook Messenger has received Material Design, first introduced with Android Lollipop. This comes from a Tweet from David Marcus, the head of Facebook Messenger.

The user experience will not be affected as this is a purely cosmetic update. The blue bars at the top of the screen have a cleaner look. There is more space in the app which gives it a roomier feel. There is a new blue plus button that will serve as a way to start a new conversation. You can see the new design below.

February 11, 2016 - Facebook has begun testing some very notable new additions to Facebook Messenger, the first in some time.

The first new feature follows closely in the footsteps of Messenger's photo-sharing sister, Instagram. Multiple account support means that your friends can use your phone to check their Facebook messages, and people who use the social networking platform for work purposes will be able to switch between professional and personal accounts with much greater ease.

The other big change is SMS integration. This feature appeared on the Messenger app in 2012 but was removed after about a year due to low user take-up. Well, now it's back, in a testing phase, at least.

Facebook is testing these new features on an undisclosed number of devices, and there's no word on when or even whether we can expect to see a full roll out.

You can find out if you're one of the lucky ones by going to Settings > Accounts and seeing if there's a plus button at the top right of the screen that'll let you add extra accounts. If you've been gifted with SMS support, there should be an SMS option in the Settings menu.

June 25, 2015 - You can now sign up for Messenger without a Facebook account. To do so, you simply have to tap the 'Not on Facebook?' option on the welcome screen. All you need to enter is your name and phone number and add a picture. The option opens up the world of Messenger to people who don't use Facebook, which seems like a sensible addition for Facebook to have made at this point in time.

The benefits of using the service with a Facebook account are still evident, however, as it allows instant access to all your Facebook friends and messages and it allows cross-device access. If you only have a Messenger account, the app works more like WhatsApp.

If you thought smartwatches were too big for your wrist, wait until you see this. The Rufus Cuff is a wearable Android tablet designed for your forearm. And it’s so crazy it just might work.

Running Android KitKat, the Rufus Watch features a 3.2-inch display, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, built-in microphone, and a front-facing camera (helping you to make those video calls). It's a standalone product which doesn't require smartphone pairing but which will allow users to do many of the same processes.

The Rufus Cuff was successfully funded on IndieGoGo way back in May, 2014 with the wearable exceeding its funding goal of $200,000 and closing around $490,983. Last week, pre-orders went live on the official site, which suggests the final release is just around the corner.

The 3.2-inch Rufus Watch isn’t exactly compact and with a TI Cortex A9 Processor, 400x240 pixel display and unspecified RAM, I suspect it’s not especially powerful, either. It's not going to be an alternative to smartphones but it could be a genuine competitor to smartwatches.

Firstly, the larger, rectangular touchscreen may be better for typing and viewing media content. The default format for videos is 16:9 widescreen and webpages are generally rectangular too: most smartwatches can't compete with this. What's more, the Rufus Cuff taps into a certain retro aesthetic that may appeal to people: it's a chunky, wrist-mounted gadget the likes of which has often been seen on science fiction TV shows.

However, Rufus Labs might be targeting corporations before consumers, with this recently released promo video revealing the potential uses for it within the workplace:

The Rufus Cuff can be pre-ordered at the Rufus Labs store in three color variants starting at $299 for the 8 GB internal storage version, and running all the way up to $438 for the 64 GB version.

Though $299 might strike you as expensive for a wearable, the ability to make video calls and watch video content in the correct format – as well as type more accurately and use Android KitKat rather than Android Wear – already make this more appealing to me than most smartwatches.

It’s like Windows, but for mobile devices.

The Android software itself is developed by Google, who releases major updates to the platform every year. Manufacturers which run Android on their phones include Samsung, Huawei, Sony, Lenovo, HTC, LG and many others; it's currently operational on more than one billion devices.

Where does Android come from?

It comes from Google, who actually acquired Android in 2005 (no, Google didn't invent it). Android is based on the Linux kernel, which, if you have friends who work in IT, you might have been told about before.

What is the difference between Android and iPhone?

It’s not so much a difference between Android and iPhone but Android and iOS. You see, iOS is the software which runs on iPhones and the differences between this and Android are simultaneously big and small.

Smartphones with Android or iOS installed are capable of doing most of the same things: they can both run apps, connect to Wi-Fi, take photos, send messages etc. But there are many differences in how they look and feel, and the possibilities of both.

Why does Android look different on each phone?

Android doesn't look different on every device, but it does have a number of different versions. Android is open-source, which means that manufacturers are free to customize the software and make it their own.

The "purest" version of Android is often referred to as "stock Android" and it's often preferred by the Android community: it's the original software as Google intended.

Other user interfaces include Samsung's TouchWiz, Sony's Xperia, and Huawei's Emotion.

What does Android offer that other OSes don’t?

Choice. For example, if you want iOS, you have a choice of iPhone, iPhone or iPhone. If you go for Android there are stacks of great devices to choose from, from cheap and cheerful handsets to really impressive flagships. Those flagships are often cheaper than the equivalent Apple devices, too.

Investment apps are democratizing Wall Street tools. In the past, high minimum investment capital, crippling fees and ridiculous commissions made it difficult to take control of savings. But a couple of apps are giving you the power. We interviewed representatives from two of these companies.

Now, you're in control of your money

Many old Wall Street companies make it difficult for small investors to get in the investment game. For instance, some financial institutions make you invest a minimum of $10,000 just to get your foot in the door. You might have to pay a 3 percent fee and another 5 percent on your profits.

But over the last few years we've seen the growth of new companies who are making it easier for you to invest in traditional Wall Street investment packages. One of those companies is Betterment and we spoke with its Director of Investment, Dan Egan, to understand what the company is doing different.

Dan said Betterment is an online adviser and wealth manager. "We do all of the smart goal based tasks that a financial adviser would normally do for 1/10 of the cost. The Apple internet of things arrives, in theory, with iOS 10

Apple has finally launched its internet-of-things (IoT) smart-home service with a new mobile app called "Home." The only problem? A distinct lack of products to work with.

Speaking on stage at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier yesterday, senior VP of software engineering Craig Federighi outlined a range of changes in the latest version of its iOS operating system, due this fall.

One of them was the "Home" app, which brings Apple's much-touted but long-delayed HomeKit system to your mobile device. The app itself was slated for release this time last year, but was pulled.

Federighi showed how, from an iPhone or iPad, you will be able to turn on/dim your lights, open your door locks or garage door, and even answer your intercom, quickly and efficiently.

In a sign that for Apple, nothing exists until it does it, Federighi also announced how combined actions would work "with something we are calling 'scenes'."

The concept of "scenes" – where you pull together a range of actions such as unlocking a door while also turning on lights and a radio under one name like "Arrive Home" – has been a mainstay of smart homes for at least a decade.

"Scenes" also represent the biggest hurdle to effective smart-home management: how to make different products work together in a seamless fashion without forcing consumers to spend hours creating them.

This is one area where Apple's control-freak tendencies have the potential to pay off. By insisting that anyone who wants to work with its HomeKit system follows its hardware and software requirements, Apple is in a position to create a simple and polished interface that just works.

Except.

Those same tendencies mean that very, very few companies are willing to sign up to Apple's controlled ecosystem, especially when the market is still wide open.

Deja vu

Federighi announced HomeKit two years ago at the same conference.

"We thought we could bring some rationality to this space," he said back in June 2014, noting that Apple was working with home-automation companies including Schlage, Honeywell and Haier.

He even talked about scenes, again as if Apple was introducing the concept to the world for the first time. He told attendees: "With Siri integration, you can say something like 'Get ready for bed,' and be assured that your garage door is closed, your door is locked, the thermostat is lowered, and your lights are dimmed."

This year, he said the same thing almost word for word.

Back in 2014, Federighi put up a slide with a range of companies it was working with to develop HomeKit-compatible products. However, only half of them have done so, and most of the remainder have produced only a single product as a test-of-concept.

Among those present in 2014 but missing on Apple's current list of compatible products: Cree, Chamberlain, Kwikset, Skybell, Osram Sylvania, and Withings. And of the others listed: Haier has but one product; likewise iHome and Netatmo.

Why the lack of support? Because Apple changed the specs last year just when companies were getting ready for a big push into the smart home. Instead of a software solution, it decided that manufacturers would instead have to include a specific Apple-approved-and-stamped chip into their products in order to provide a suitable level of encryption and security.

The concern is understandable: security risks associated with the IoT is the single biggest factor in people not buying smart home products. But Apple's decision to do a u-turn and insist on sticking its own hardware in other manufacturers' products caused an immediate cooling in the relationship: one that has yet to recover.

Window still open

So why did it introduce the Home app at all this week? Because due to its functionality, the application can only be introduced in a major software upgrade – in this case iOS 10.

Although Apple is behind, the market has yet to really take off and the opportunity is still there for it to muscle in. The company clearly feels that it needs to demonstrate progress in 2016 rather than wait until June 2017 (and iOS 11) to pull HomeKit into its devices.

But clearly, it still has some way to go. So far today only one manufacturer – August – has bothered to use Apple's announcements to showcase their product.

It is noteworthy that smart thermostat company Ecobee – which put out an entirely new model with a HomeKit chip in it last year – has said nothing. In fact the "pinned" tweet at the top of Ecobee's Twitter feed talks about how its product now works with Amazon's Alexa voice technology – a growing competitor. The announcement was from back in February.

So, HomeKit is here. At least the app is. The big question is whether it will be moved into the special "Apple stuff" folder that most users feel obliged to create and sit, unused and unloved, alongside Numbers, Health, Pages, Wallet, Watch, Find Friends, iTunes U and all the other apps Apple has foisted on its users that they never use.

Or will the "Home" app break out and make it on the first screen on iOS devices? That depends almost entirely on third-party manufacturers deciding whether to allow themselves to be sucked into Apple's closed system.

Apple's attitude to third parties – where it dictates terms and expects people to follow them – has not worked out so well in other markets. Its Newsstand approach, for example, was a disaster, with publishers simply refusing to hand over control. Apple revamped and relaunched it this time last year with greater flexibility, but it has still yet to take off.

With the announcement of the device's release through AT&T, we also got an official specs listing, which closely mirrors what we've seen in recent leaks.

The S7 Active has a very sizable battery, coming in at 4,000 mAh. That's 400 mAh bigger than the S7 Edge.

The 5.1-inch screen is Super AMOLED and has a QHD resolution, making it the same screen as the Galaxy S7 and the S6 Active, the predecessor to the S7 Active.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 820 backed with 4 GB of RAM – that's 1 GB bigger than the previous generation. We also see 32 GB of internal memory as standard on the device, with SD card support enabling this to be expanded up to 200 GB.

The Galaxy S7 Active has the same weatherproofing as the S7 and S7 Edge, that is IP68. On top of that it offers a military-grade body (MIL STD-810G) and a shatter-resistant screen.

The camera system on the S7 Active comprises a 12 MP rear camera, which is 4 MP smaller than its predecessor. But this is not something we need to be worried about. Samsung did this with the move from the S6 to S7 and made up for the reduced pixel count with dual-pixel technology, which is exactly what the S7 Active does. The front-facing camera is 5 MP.

Samsung expected to launch new wearable today to compete with Apple

Samsung will announce a new device today (02/06) in New York. Judging from the invitation sent out to the press, the South Korean manufacturer will not announce its forthcoming Galaxy Note 6, but instead the next version of its fitness band. This move would give Samsung an 11-day jump on Apple’s own big wearable-related announcement.

According to the press invite, the event will take place at 17:00 EDT, and it seems safe to say that the company will announce something, shall we say, geared towards health:

What draws attention is the fact that Samsung has sent this invitation on the date of the launch event. This leads me to believe that the South Korean manufacturer is trying to get the jump on Apple's upcoming developer event, the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which takes place on June 13.

Among the most anticipated of Apple's announcements is a new Apple Watch with new bracelets, a thinner design and improved battery. Last year, Apple snapped up a lot of customers who were interested in the health and sport benefits that the Apple Watch's functions were geared towards. Now, Samsung might do the same. But what next?

The Gear Fit 2 is coming

In 2014, Samsung announced the first version of the Gear Fit, its fitness bracelet. In 2015, the company launched the Gear S2, one of the best smartwatches presented that year. Considering the recent rumors about the second generation of the Gear Fit, we will most likely have an announcement about this new gadget today.

According to a tweet from Tizen Cafe channel, the Gear Fit 2 has been in development for some time and may not change its design significantly. But we can expect a big change in the features of this bracelet, which could contain all the Gear S2 software features.

SamMobile also released some possible specs for the Gear Fit 2. The bracelet, which would also function as a smartwatch, will reportedly have a 1.55-inch curved AMOLED display. In addition, it appears that device will be focused on sports, as indicated by its appearance in leaked images.

Other rumors suggest that Samsung has developed a biological processor, or "bio-processor", which would have a wide range of sensors purpose-built for tracking sports activities. Among them would be a built-in GPS, heart-rate monitor, gyroscope, accelerometer and barometer.

The Gear Fit 2 may also come with IP68 certification which would ensure it could survive for up to 30 minutes in 1.5 meters of water, which could theoretically allow a user to swim while wearing it.

Could Samsung surprise everyone today?
If Samsung announces a device today which has evolved from Tizen like the Gear S2, and takes advantage of exclusive services focused on health, it would be able to seriously challenge Apple in the wearable arena.

In the upcoming WWDC conference, it is expected that Apple CEO Tim Cook will reveal a unique feature of the next generation of Apple devices: the ability to accumulate blood data in partnership with Cor. By offering such a service, Apple could revolutionize the market for smart appliances associated with health.

Huawei Watch Review

While the smartwatch segment has yet to pick up steam, that hasn't stopped most smartphone manufacturers from trying their luck. It's safe to say that Samsung is the most visible in this space, with its early start and aggressive marketing campaign for the recently launched Gear S2. That aside, the Samsung Gear S2 is actually one of the better premium smartwatches currently available, if not the best.

Huawei has gained some much-needed recognition in India after the successful launch of the Google Nexus 6P (Review), and now the company has finally announced its first smartwatch in the country, simply called the Huawei Watch. Based on Android Wear, the Huawei Watch was first announced at last year's MWC so it's not exactly brand new. Priced at Rs. 22,999, it competes directly with the Motorola Moto 360 (2nd Gen) and the Samsung Gear S2. Let's find out how good Huawei's debut watch really is.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY

There are multiple options for the case and straps internationally, for both men and women, but for now, we in India have to settle with a single model which has a stainless steel case and a black leather strap. The watch is designed to be unisex, and the 42mm diameter could work for anyone. It is a bit thick at 11.3mm but then so are most smartwatches out there.

The Huawei Watch looks smart thanks to the metal frame and leather strap, and goes well with either casual or formal attire. The build quality is great and the watch is comfortable to wear. The leather straps are secured well and can be easily detached with the help of a metal latch. This is similar to the system used by the Moto 360 as well, so theoretically at least, you could use straps designed for other 42mm smartwatches. The bezel doesn't sit flush with the display and is raised a bit, so it does get in the way when you're swiping through menus. It's not a big issue, to be honest, and we got used to it in a couple of hours.

The display is a 1.4-inch Amoled panel with a 400x400 pixel resolution. Due to the dense pixel count of 286ppi, pictures and text are sharp, with barely any noticeable pixellation around the edges. The screen is also scratch-proof thanks to the use of sapphire crystal. Colours are also pretty vibrant, and sunlight legibility is decent. The Huawei Watch has a fully circular display, but that comes at the cost an ambient light sensor. Having that sensor saves you the headache of manually adjusting the brightness when you move between light and dark places, but we guess that's the price you pay for aesthetics.

There's a single button on the side which is positioned slightly higher than the centre, like the one on the Moto 360 (2nd Gen). A single press lets you wake or dim the display; a double press will turn the display off; and a long press takes you to the app drawer. The button is comfortably stiff in order to avoid accidental presses.

Underneath, we have the heart rate sensor and contact points for the charging cradle. The watch also gets IP67 certification for water resistance, but that doesn't apply to the included leather straps, which you will have to protect. The charging cradle is magnetised so the watch latches onto it easily. Contact points are not the best way to charge devices as the leads on the watch will inevitably wear off which could be a problem in the long run. Inductive charging would have been ideal here but as some consolation, the watch does support fast charging and Huawei promises an 80 percent charge in about 45 minutes. The charger is modular but its cable is fixed to the cradle, which means you can't replace it, should it develop a fault in the future.

SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES

The Huawei Watch is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and has 512MB of RAM. There's 4GB of internal storage for apps and data, as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy, and a 300mAh battery. Other than the heart rate sensor, you also get an accelerometer, gyroscope, and a barometer. The watch runs on the latest version of the Android Wear platform, which is 6.0.1, and is compatible with Android smartphones (obviously) and iOS devices as well.

Unlike with their Android smartphones, manufacturers can't mess about too much with the interface of Android Wear devices, which means if you've used one such watch, you've pretty much used them all. Companies can however add their own watch faces, and the Huawei Watch comes with some pretty cool looking ones out-of-the-box. A total of 43 watch faces are pre-installed so there's usually something for every occasion. Huawei uses the Android Wear app on your phone to keep track of watch faces, discover new watch apps, and control which apps need to be triggered for certain actions. You can also monitor the watch's battery and storage.

Thankfully, there are Android Wear equivalents for most of the common messaging, fitness and productivity apps. If you already have the main apps installed on your phone, the watch will automatically install the Wear equivalents when you first sync it.

PERFORMANCE

Setting up the Huawei Watch is simply a matter of pairing it with the Android Wear app on your phone - the watch does the rest. Performance is speedy with very little lag when swiping through screens or launching an app. There were times when the interface froze up, but this only happened once or twice during our week-long review period.

The latest version of Android Wear holds a steadier connection to your phone then before, and we seldom faced arbitrary disconnections. It's sadly still a bit buggy; certain functions don't always work as they should and the only way to fix it is to reset the watch. For instance, the always-on display feature simply decided to stop working even though it was enabled. This behaviour usually kicks in when the battery is low but it failed to go back to its normal behaviour even after a reboot.

You are alerted of notifications with a slight vibration and you can answer or reject a call too, although you'll have to use your phone or a Bluetooth accessory to actually converse, since the watch's built-in speaker is only barely audible even if you're indoors and there's very little ambient noise. The speaker was inactive when we first received the watch due to an Android Wear limitation. The update to Android Wear 1.4 enabled it, but in our experience it took a few reboots to begin working. You can also use the microphone for voice searches using the 'OK Google' trigger. This didn't work really well in our experience.

The Huawei Watch also doubles up as your fitness companion, and comes with the Google Fit app pre-installed. There's a tracking app which helps you set daily goals for walking and lets you know the number of steps you've taken and calories you've burnt. It isn't very accurate but you do get a rough idea of the extent of your activities. The heart rate sensor works well though, giving seemingly accurate results.

It doesn't take long to familiarise yourself with the interface as you get a quick tutorial in the beginning for basic functions. Some of the stock apps include Alarm, Agenda, Find my phone, Fit, Fitness tracking, Hangouts, Maps, Play Music, Reminders, Stopwatch, Timer, Torch, and Together. The last of those lets you send quick messages directly to nearby Android Wear smartwatches, once paired.

Huawei claims a one-and-a-half-day battery life but during our testing period, we found that the watch lasted only a little over a full day, falling short of the claimed duration by about 8-9 hours. You get a prompt to turn on the battery saver mode once the charge reaches 15 percent. In this mode, vibrations are disabled and the screen turns off when not in use. Charging it is pretty quick and there's a nice screen gesture that shows you the charging status.

VERDICT

The Huawei Watch is currently available at Rs. 22,999 on Flipkart, which feels too expensive considering the Gear S2 costs just slightly more and is much better. The problem is not so much on Huawei's part as it is Android Wear itself, which even in its latest iteration, feels like a work in progress. The Huawei Watch is beautifully crafted and can look just like a regular watch with the right face. Performance is good, and the display is sharp and vibrant too.

The software is a bit glitchy and there's no telling when certain functions will stop working, requiring you to reset the watch and re-pair it with your phone. There isn't much you can do to personalise the watch either, as you can only get the stainless steel case with a black leather strap as of now.

The Huawei Watch will be a good pick once the price drops closer to Rs. 15,000, as it's a good alternative to the Moto 360 (2nd Gen). But at its current price, you're better off with the Samsung Gear S2.

Mobile trends in early 2016: Android takes another bite out of Apple

A new report published by DeviceAtlas provides an insight into the Android / iOS duel, the popularity of smartphone screen sizes and more. In the report, Android is revealed to be gaining in its share of web traffic, while iOS is falling off. Smaller phones, between 4 and 5 inches, are also shown to be the most popular, although phablets are making small gains

This new report from DeviceAtlas covers Q1 2016 (January - March) and reveals patterns in mobile devices used to access online content. Let's take a look over some of the key findings.

Android takes web traffic from iOS

The report paints a positive picture for Android: "Android maintained its leading position and grew its share in most countries [DeviceAtlas] analysed." Android saw increases in its share of web traffic in eight out of the ten countries looked at. iOS saw the inverse: decreases in seven out of ten countries. This is a very different story to Q2 2015, when the roles were almost perfectly reversed.

Italy saw the most dramatic turnaround: in Q2 2015, Android's web traffic share there fell by 7.39 percent, while in Q1 2016, it rose by 6.59 percent. On the other side of the fence, iOS witnessed a particularly painful fall from grace in Germany, where it grew by 6.47 in Q2 2015, but fell by 5.51 percent in Q1 2016.

Smaller phones dominate

The launch of the iPhone SE earlier this year meant the first compact smartphone capable of competing with top-tier flagships like the Galaxy S7 and Apple's own iPhone 6s. Apple's decision appears to be a good one in light of the data from DeviceAtlas.
4- and 4.7-inch devices are the most popular in six of the ten countries studied, often by a significant margin (in the UK, 4-inch phones account for almost 30 percent of mobile web traffic).

5.7-inches proved the least popular size in all ten countries. Despite this, 5.7-inch phablets made gains in their share of web traffic but by small degrees (one percent growth or less), while 4-inch devices fell in all but one country (Nigeria) by as much as 4.83 percent (Germany).

Apple and Samsung

Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the global market:
"In Q1 2016 Samsung had the largest web traffic share in India, Nigeria, Germany, Italy and Spain, while Apple devices generated the largest amount of website visits in France, UK, Australia, Japan and USA."

One bot accounted for almost a third of all web traffic

A curious finding: bots and crawlers, which can either be neutral (for search engines, market research, etc.) or more malicious in nature (spambots, data scrapers, etc.) accounted for almost 49 percent of all web traffic, with the other half being us, humans. Even more curious is that the most widespread bot was Majestic-12, beating both Google and Bing by huge margins: Majestic-12 accounted for 68.53 percent of the bot web traffic (Google and Bing sat at around 20 and 4 percent, respectively).
The Majestic-12 bot, therefore, accounted for around one third of all web traffic. A pretty mind-blowing statistic.

Although it may be surprising to hear that humans only account for half of all web traffic, the figure "is in line with industry averages for bot generated traffic", according to DeviceAtlas.

Older and non-LTE phone remain significant

While LTE devices achieved 97 percent of the mobile web traffic in South Korea, "web traffic generated by non-LTE phones is still significant in many countries, including India (45%), Nigeria (39%), Italy (36%), Spain (29%), and Germany (20%)."
