"EGG"sploration Stations!

To celebrate the spring season and to expand on our egg hatching this week, we decided that the last day before our vacation to set up "egg"sploration stations. We had parent volunteers stay and work a station as the kids were able to explore EGGS!

There were 7 stations that asked 7 different questions.

What does the inside of a raw and hard boiled egg look like?

Which egg spins better, a hard-boiled egg or a raw egg?

What happens when you place an egg in water?

How much does an egg weigh and how many coins equal the same amount?

What does it look like after it is in dye? (I just love big kid helper pictures!)

We used a mortar and pestle to grind up the egg shells.

We made "Egg in a Nest" for our snack!

How does it taste?

Can you guess the circumference of the egg?

I think our little family is complete with 9 sweet baby chicks! They are so cute and it is going to be so fun to watch them grow. Here are the latest pictures of our little ones!

I don't think one student walked into school today! They were all so excited and ran up the stairs and went straight to the incubator! We had two more hatch over night to join "Jelly Bean" this morning. We had one hatch during our lunch and one during our afternoon class. It was very exciting to watch the children as they experienced this new life! Here are the latest pictures.

Our New Babies!

We are so excited! 21 days ago, we started up an incubator and added 24 fertilized eggs. After much care turning them, watching the temperature and charting the days...We hatched our very first chick!! As of this weekend, we started to see eggs wiggle on their own. This morning we were watching as the first crack started. We could see what looked like an eye blinking and ever hear a small "cheep". My kids and I were so excited so we came back to school this evening to find our little chick had just hatched. There are a couple more starting and the new one will be able to move to the home we have built for them tomorrow!

We want to thank the Neifergold family for letting us borrow the incubator, getting eggs and building their home! This is such a great experience for our school, we are very thankful!

Around the World with our Discovery Class

We had a hole in our week that we wanted to fill with a class. Thursday afternoons became our "Discovery Class". Every Thursday, we travel to another Continent and study different countries and cultures. We talk about languages, traditions, clothing, animals and our favorite is FOOD! We have become quite the culinary group with our new and exciting recipes! So far this year we have made Irish Soda Bread, West African Lime cake, Egyptian candy, quesadillas with homemade salsa, Pavlova, and pasta from scratch! Today we had cheese tasting and chocolate fondue (we were in France!)

New Work!

As I learn new lessons, the best thing to do it use it right away. Here are a few new lessons we have introduced this week.

Mrs. Bromley and "C" are working with Compound Words. There are pictures of compound words with a basket of objects. The child says the word and find the two words that make up that word in the obects. For example the word football, the child will find a foot and a ball to put them next to the card! It is also fun to guess the word by looking at the objects and finding the picture that matches!

This group of children are playing Bingo! Their game boards have the letters on them and the caller picks a letter from the bag for the group. Games are a great way to have children working together, having fun and LEARNING!

"B" is working the the "I Spy" box. There are objects in there and we identify them by the initial sound. "I spy with my little eye, something that starts with "sss".

This is our new teen board. It is a wonderful way to introduce the numbers 11-19 with the symbol and quantity. We use the colored beads and golden beads to let the children build the numbers. They can start to see the relationships between the numbers.

Addition is a fun activity to do with a friend. There are many steps, but it is always fun to work together. Each of the children set up the small numerals on a mat. We then build each addend with the small numerals on a tray.

Then it is off to the "bank" to build the numbers with the golden beads. This picture shows that we had three bankers ready to help!

Each child builds their number with the golden beads on the rug. Here is the number 4738 + 3251

Then the two children add their golden beads together and place the larger wooden numerals for each place value. When all beads are added up, the answer is right there! It is very fun to watch the golden bead grow. What a great introduction to addition!

Our Annual Daddy's Day!

Last Saturday, we hosted our Daddy's Day! We were thrilled with the number of Dad's, Uncles, Grandfathers and special guests that came to share a special day and make wonderful memories. We had lots of activities for them to work on and the homemade ice cream was delicious! Here are some pictures of our day!

I am sorry I have not posted much recently, as you know I am in the final months of my Montessori training. As we are winding down, the work load is filling up!

I am enrolled with the Buffalo Montessori Teacher Education Program. It is AMS affiliated and MACTE accredidated. This two year program meets Friday nights and Saturdays and two weeks in the summer.

Currently, I am working on the finishing touches of my Math Albums (Math and Language fits in two 3" binders!). The album is a collection of lessons in a subject. I keep them at school since I use them all the time. Each lesson is detailed with the aims, both indirect and direct, and step by step process of each lesson. In addition we are required to illustrate and or take photographs of each lesson. They pictures are great reminders of the layouts of each lesson. Please feel free to look through the albums to see the details of any lesson or subject area.

I thought I would share a couple of pictures of my classmates as we are presented the lessons. Even though it is a lot of work, we do manage to have fun too!

Touch Tank

We loved having the Niagara Aquarium come to school to bring the Touch Tank. The children had a wonderful time learning about interesting creatures and then holding them! Here are some pictures of our new little friends.

Structure of a Montessori Environment

Upon first glance a Montessori classroom may not appear to be a structured classroom, however, when one looks more closely the classroom (environment) is a carefully prepared learning environment. Materials are displayed on the shelves in trays or in baskets. Each basket or tray contains all the items necessary to complete that activity. The teacher’s role is to present lessons, record the child’s progress, and introduce new materials as the child has mastered the old. Children receive a “lesson” from a teacher on each of the learning materials in the classroom. Once the child has had a lesson they are free to choose that “work” anytime they want. So, when looking at a Montessori classroom in action you will see children working independently at tables or on small work rugs; as opposed to group, teacher-directed lessons or activities. This freedom of choice helps children build concentration, become actively engaged in their learning, and builds self esteem.

In a Montessori classroom the children receive individualized instruction. The classroom is organized by curriculum areas. The curriculum areas you will see are: Language, Math, Geography, Science, Practical Life, and Sensorial. Language, Math, Geography, and Science are self explanatory; however, Practical Life and Sensorial are Montessori specific. Practical Life is an area where children learn care of self (dressing, lacing, buckling, tying), care of environment (learning to pour, spoon, scoop, make a snack) through very specific materials. The Sensorial area is a set of specially designed materials that teach shape, color, and size. They help children compare and contrast the world around them. The work in a Montessori classroom is multisensory, sequential and self-correcting, and facilitates the learning of skills and abstract ideas.

During our day the children have a “work cycle” of an hour and a half where they are receiving lessons one-on-one or in small groups and have the opportunity for independent work. There is also time allotted for gross motor activities, snack and circle time. Our circle time is great for learning how to take turns, to develop listening skills, and to receive whole group instruction. We play games, sing songs, and discuss things we’ve learned.

Treasured Recipes

In 1997, the Co-Op created a cookbook with recipes from the families and friends of the Co-Op. We still have some of the cookbooks at the school if you are interested in adding it to your kitchen ($5.00). I thought I would use this blog to also add some of the recipes to share with you.

The most requested recipe...
Mrs. Koester's Play Dough Recipe!

1 c. water
1/2 tsp. food coloring
1 T. cooking oil
1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar

Mix together the water, food color and cooking oil in a saucepan and bring to a boil. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, salt and cream of tartar. Add this to the boiling mixture; then remove from the stove. Mix thoroughly, cool and knead (my favorite part!). Recipe may be doubled.

We also like to add scent by adding a packet of Kool-Aid of the same color to the mixture. It makes it smell wonderful! And if you are going to make brown, add some hot coco for a yummy chocolate scent!

Metal Inset Work

First I have to say thank you for being patient with me. My dad is out of the hospital and feeling much better!

"Hot Work" Metal Insets

The metal inset table will be out all year. We will change and add shapes, but because it has so many benefits, we want children to work with it often! Because there are not as many paper projects coming home, it is nice to see the metal inset papers in the backpack. The children can choose to trace the inside of the frame or the outside of the inset...or both! It is fun to use different colors or see the beautiful shapes. You will also notice that there is a nice variety of shapes, 10 in all (We have started with 5). Within this work, the children are learning about shapes, colors and most importantly they are getting ready to write letters! There are many variation to keep the work alive and new each time. They can add vertical and horizontal lines, they can turn the inset for different shapes or color in the shapes to gain control and strength in their hands.

Parent of the Day

I wanted to share with you the fun we had Friday morning. Mr. Phillips brought in his guitar and played while the children were working...with a couple back up singers as well! Then at circle time we added some bells and reindeer headbands for a great sing-a-long! I think our favorite song was Wiggle, Wiggle from Yo Gabba-Gabba! (click for video of the song)

We are looking forward to making a craft in the afternoon class this week with one of our Grandmothers!

Parent of the day can be whatever you make of it. We would love to hear about a trip you have taken, share a family recipe, a favorite craft or songs! It is such a great opportunity to be part of your child class and make memories that will last!

Just a side note- I will be out of the class Monday (12/13) and Tuesday(12/14). Mrs. Bromley will take over my position and Ashley Noeker will be there to help out. She filled in for me for my maternity leave last year. I should be back on Wednesday.

Cylinder Blocks

It seems that this weeks, the Cylinder Blocks have been off the shelf a lot! This work was here on the first day and will be on the shelf through the end of the year. Since the children have worked with them often, we brought in a new extension...a blindfold! The children now have to use their sense of touch to complete the work. It is very interesting to see how they use their hand to find the correct holes.

Below you will find a demonstration of how the work is presented. You will notice that there is no language used and the pincer grip that she uses to hold the cylinders. The only thing I would add to this lesson is to model tracing the bottom of each cylinder as well at the holes with two fingers in a counter-clock wise motion. This motion will help use the muscle memory to make the connections between the difference in size. We use counter-clock wise movement because letters such as "c" or "a" are made with that movement. This work is a preparation for writing as well as training for the senses.

Snow Day!

I hope you all enjoyed the early Christmas present of a snow day. We had a fun day around the house making forts and watching Christmas movies!

Since we were home all day, I started working on an extension for some work you may have noticed in the class. In the Sensorial area, we have a set of blue Geometric Solids. The children learn the names of these shapes. I am working on some cards to go with them to classify familiar objects with the solids they may see at school. For example, a drinking glass is a cylinder and a tent is a triangle-based Prism.

When the children work with the solids, Montessori uses a teaching method called the "Three Period Lesson". The three periods are
1.) Name the object ("This is a cone.")
2.) Point out the objects from a small group ("Which one is the cone?")
3.) Have the child name the object ("What is this?")
A child can move through the periods at their own pace. They need to hear the new vocabulary many times for them to be able to use it. You may hear a teacher tell a child "Can you put the cone on your head?" Can you turn the cone over?" "Can you pass the cone to your friend?" The child is using their sense of touch manipulating the object as well as hearing the word over and over again.

It is always exciting when a child reaches the third period!

In an effort to communicate with our families more, we are sending home weekly newsletters. I want to include lots of information so you can have an inside look at our class. I decided that I would like to go a step further and create a blog so you can get even more updates and include even more information!

New class offered for students

With so many changes happening we are constantly reassessing what is best for the students. At our last Board Meeting, we decided that the classes work best with a smaller number of children. We currently have our Tuesday and Thursday afternoons available. We would like to get an idea of who would be interested in switching to an afternoon class on Tuesday and Thursday. This would be the same as the other classes but allow for even more individual lessons for the children. Please complete the attached response and return it to school so we can move forward with the plans. This will not register you for this class, but we will know that there is an interest. Once we have a complete class we will notify you of the change. This new class will happen after the holiday vacation. Please see a teacher if you have any further questions.

"Hot Work" Counting 1-9 with Objects

This is work that is out all year long. There is a basket of 45 objects (last month it was gourds and this month it is beautiful ornaments!). The children unroll a rug and bring over the number cards with 1-9 on them. They place the number one on the top left of the rug and then take the basket over to the place where the ornaments are and place one in the basket and bring it back. They place one ornament next to the number one. Then they flip over the next card, two and place it under the one. They then walk over to the ornaments and put two in their basket and return to the rug. They continue with this until they have counted out all the numbers to 9. In the end they have a rug filled with 45 ornaments! This work has so many benefits-

· They can visually see the numbers grow as they move down the rug

· They are moving a lot! They have to walk back and forth from their rug to the objects

· They have to remember as they are walking what number and how many to bring back (this is called distal memory)

· It makes the connection between numerals and quantity

· There are so many opportunities for repetition To master the skill!

Stone Soup was a Success!

Thank you to everyone that attended our first School wide Stone Soup! The children had a great time scrubbing, chopping, peeling and eating the soup! Having your kids help with food prep is a great way to teach many fine motor skills as well as introduce new foods. During the week of prepping the food, the students had an opportunity to taste test many new vegetables…even an avocado! It was fun to see their faces as they experienced new foods!
