Scrappy Triangles Quilt

On my design wall....is a quilt for my Aunt Grier. I wanted to make her a throw quilt for her solid colored couch to match the chairs in the room. Below is the fabric on her chairs, I got a sample from Calico Corners. I used the sample to match a color scheme. She has no idea I have her chair fabric! She will be surprised.

I just love this solid gray couch, I am hoping the quilt

will go on the couch.

She lives on the water in Annapolis Maryland so my thoughts were to make her a Nautical quilt. I came up with these scrappy triangles because I thought it I could make it look like sails.

Sarah's College Graduation Gift

A quilt to remind her of a semester abroad in Mexico. Below is a picture she took while studying abroad. It is a window grill. As soon as I saw this picture, I knew I had to turn it into a quilt. She has no idea that I am busy trying to complete this by May for her college graduation. She attends Peace College in Raleigh NC and will be graduating with a Forensic Anthropology Bachelors of Science Degree! We are so proud of her!

How did I do it? I took the picture and photoshoped it. I cut out the color and then sent it to Kinko's and had it blown up to poster size. Now it's 25" by 44". See below my template that I use to cut out my quilt pieces. I decided to make a wool applique quilt, my first. So hopefully I can do this.

My plan is to use the turquoise dyed felted wool of various fabrics as the wrought iron window grill on a background of cream wool. Then border with this wonderful coral fabric from Michael Miller's collection Ooh La La and I am using the Spice Palates. The fabric above will be part of the backing as well.

Fun once again. Our group was a little smaller this week with only 14 ladies, made up of my fellow nurses that I work with at The Johns Hopkins NICU. I was very happy to teach again. This was my second class teaching this group. I can't believe there are this many who wanted to learn how to sew. Very happy to share my knowledge and my reward is passing on the love of quilting. I forgot to pics of show and tell. Next month, I promise to share their accomplishments.

Tee Shirt Tutorial

Tee Shirt Quilt

A friend at work wanted my mom to make her a tee shirt quilt and gave her these tees. Unfortunately, mom never got a chance to complete it before passing away in July. I knew I had to finish it for her. Tee shirt quilts are my least favorite quilts and I knew if I was going to do it, it had to be interesting or I would be miserable making it. I decided to use the colors of the tee shirts, see below. I bought bright primary colors to compliment the tees. Below is a tutorial if any of you happen to have a bunch of tees you have saved and are ready to do something with them. Hope you enjoy the tutorial, let me know if you have any questions!

Tee Shirt Quilt Tutorial

Supplies:

tee shirts
fabrics of varied colors, I used 10 different fabrics (8 fat quarters and 2 fabrics measuring 1/2 yd).
Pellon 821 Quilter's Grid or any type of one sided iron-on interfacing, thin or light weight.
thread to match your fabric, I used yellow, blue, red and white (white in my bobbin)

is what I used to back the tee shirts, it worked great!

Directions:

Cut out the designs from the tee shirts that you want to use in the quilt. I cut out each design roughly and left as much fabric around the design as possible. I used designs from the front and back of the tee shirt and from the pockets.

Trim the designs down leaving about 2 inches around each design using a rotary cutter and ruler. You will notice that the fabric rolls. This is why you have to put a stabilizer onto the back of the tee shirt designs that you want to include into the quilt.

Cut a piece of Pellon just smaller than the tee shirt design.

Iron the Pellon onto the back of your designs using a pressing cloth. I use a piece of an old sheet.

Trim the tee shirts down to the size you want them, leaving ample room around for seam allowances. I only cut off enough to make the similar sizes. All the small ones I cut to the same width and the larger ones I cut them down to 2 inches around the design on all sides.

Plan your design. I played around with them before settling on the final layout.
I cut strips of fabric to go around all the big squares. Each strip was cut 3.5 inches wide.
I then sewed the strips around the big squares and then layed on the design wall to see how they would look.
I then pieced the squares together by centering the squares and trimming off any extra strips that were bigger than the rest.
In the center square, I decided to put all the small designs together.

Quilt it anyway you like. I did a simple stitch in the ditch to protect the tee shirts. I didn't want any quilting to interfere with the words on the tee shirts.

I used all the left over fabric and pieced it to make the back and the binding.

Only two more blocks to hand quilt!

This is the quilt top in full view. I have all but the bottom two outside squares and the border completed!

The center says: "Suzanne Lindsay 1982, quilting by Stephanie Hughes 2010". I will have to put a block on the back with the actual date I finished it since I decided to hand quilt it. Mom did the embroidery before giving it me late 2010 and passing away summer of 2011.

I have been working on this quilt since March 2011, spending a few hours a week hand quilting it. Only two blocks and the borders are left to quilt! I can't wait to finish. I am please with how my hand quilting turned out. Mom would be proud. For those of you who don't follow me, these blocks were my mom's that she made in 1982, this is how she learned applique. She never did anything with it but saved them and put them away with all the fabric she used to make it. In 2010, mom showed them to me and I told her I would quilt it if I got to keep it! She agreed. She then embroidered the center and gave it me. She passed away last summer after giving it to me and I am determined to get it done and cherish it for the rest of my life! Every moment I spend quilting it reminds me of my mom! Love you Mom!

Tutorial for my car trash bags

This little bag has received lots of attention on Pinterest. I have been asked by many to give a tutorial so here it is! Enjoy. Steph

Fabric pieces you will need:

1. The main part of the bag can be anything you want! In this bag I used a wild print but you can quilt or do anything you like in this part, be creative!

* cut 1 of front fabric 22" x 13"

* cut 1 of lining fabric 22" x 12.5"

2. Binding: mine is pink!

* cut 1 - 22" x 3.5"

3. Handle: mine is the same print here but you can use anything!

* cut 1 - 22" x 2.5"

Step 1: Fold the main fabric you selected in half lengthwise with right sides together. Sew the center back seam as shown in the picture (sew all seams in this project at 5/8", secure with a zig-zag stitch, trimming all seams). Repeat same step with lining. You will make two separate bags, one out of fabric and one out of lining. You cut the lining slightly smaller than the main fabric so it will be slightly shorter in the width and fit easily inside the main fabric once completed.

Step 2: Fold the bag in half and sew the bottom of the bag's seam, centering the side seam as in the picture below. Do the same of the lining.

Step 3: Open the bottom of the bag and pull the corners out like in the picture below:

Step 4: Mark 1.5" down from the corner as in picture below and mark of the corner, this is where you are going to sew:

Step 5: Sew both corners and then trim.

Do the same with the fabric and the lining fabric

Step 6: Open bag

Step 7: Turn the main fabric so that the right side is out. Keep the lining inside out and place it inside the bag. You should not be able to see any seams.

Step 8: Sew binding end placing right sides together, creating a circle. After sewing the seam, open up and fold in half with wrong sides together.

Step 9: Sew the binding to the top of the bag about 1" below the top of the bag, with the seams all facing up towards to the top of the bag. You will be folding the binding over the seams on top to the inside of the bag, onto the lining.

Step 10: pin the binding to the inside of the bag, onto the lining. Hand whip stitch in place.

Step 11: Sew the handle by folding it in half length wise and securing the ends. Pin the handle to the inside of the back of the bag at the top. Sew the button on.

Step 12: Use Pellon to create a stiff holder for the plastic bag you will be using in the bag.

Step 13: Cut the Pellon to be slightly smaller than your bag.

* If you used my measurements, cut the Pellon 8" tall by 18" wide.

Step 14: Sew the Pellon into a circle by overlapping the Pellon. I was able to use the machine for the edges but had to hand secure the center closed. I overlapped it slightly by about 1/2" and sewed the layer down.

Step 15: Place the Pellon into the bag and secure it to the bag by hand sewing it low, leaving room for a bag to fold over the Pellon inside the bag.

As you can see by this picture, the Pellon is attached to the bag low in the back middle only. This gives you plenty of room for the bag to fit over the Pellon.

That's it! It is simple to use and fun to give as gifts! Here is a few copies of others I have made:

Finally, this is how it looks with a plastic bag inside for your trash. Now your car with be clean! No more car trash! I use doggie poop bags, newspaper bags and veggie grocery store bags inside my trash can. Any skinny bag, recycled will do! Enjoy!

Hi everyone! Just wanted to share with you some exciting news...I put a sign up sheet at work asking if anyone wanted to learn how to quilt. After some planning and getting ready, tonight we had our first class. We will meet monthly! WOW do I have an amazing group. We made a small project and next month I will show you everyone's finished work. I am just tickled pink that I am bringing the joy of quilting to 16 individuals. How exciting? Since I have 3 sons and have had little luck in getting them to sew, I feel the need to teach others. Nothing like getting 16 nurses together in one room!

2011 Year in Review

2011....my year in review

2011 was a very difficult year for my family! We lost my mom and my granddad, my hubby Kevin had knee surgery and hurt his back, my Aunt Beth was diagnosed with breast cancer and my Dad needed a pacemaker.

2011 was also filled with some wonderful things! I got a new cousin, my children finished another year of college (putting me one more year closer to retirement!), Kevin's back got better, we both lost some weight, I made a few quilts (one for my Aunt with breast cancer who is doing great), I found wonderful things at my mom's to finish making, and my sister Kim was the winner of Rascal Flatts’ Flatts Fest 2011 Karaoke Challenge! Lots of wonderful things happened this year.

I just have to say to all my blogging friends...

My Fabric Storage Solution

My new fabric storage solution.

Ikea's PAX wardrobe systems.

(Not available at all locations.)

29.5 inches wide by 90 inches tall.

They have different width of cabinets. I picked the 29.5 inches width but they go up to 39.5 inches wide. The one I picked can't have a door on it unless you go wider or put two together. That is fine for me because I want as much light to help me see my fabric. I wanted easy access and no door helps me do this, plus I think it looks great like this.

I have been very busy and sorry for not posting much lately! What have I been doing? I have been working on a new storage solution for my quilting fabric! I decided to store my quilting fabric on small boards. My boards are handmade by me by cutting white foam core board into 5 inches by 7.5 inches rectanges and pinning fabric onto the board. I put anywhere from one to three different fabrics on each board depending on how much yardage there is for each. I can put 4 fat quarters on one board or 3 yards of one fabric by itself.

When searching on the web, I saw many quilters putting their fabric on store bought boards but that was too expensive for me. They are available in cases of 10 sheets. I was able to buy 40 sheets of white foam board (link here) directly from a supplier with free shipping (by using a code I found by doing a coupon search $10 off $100 purchase got me free shipping) for only $116. After cutting the boards, that is 640 rectangles for $116! In my opinion, it's better than the foam core board you buy in the craft store because they have a heavier paper covering, making them more difficult to cut. I discovered this because the first sheets I bought in the craft store were difficult to cut because of the paper on them plus 2 sheets for $9.99 (640 sheets for $320) was too expensive, I might have just bought one made by the vendors at the quilt shows. I did an online search for a discount price and found these in bulk. I was pleasantly surprised they were much easier to cut!

This system worked for me because I could fit three rows of boards in these bing from IKEA. Many bloggers show their fabric on boards like this but they display them on shelves. I didn't want to expose my fabric to the dust and sunlight that most have to deal with when placing their fabric on shelves out in the open in their sewing room. I wanted a more protected, yet easy access storage solution and this is what I came up with after much searching!

I love how the drawers can be completely removed to allow me a great view of my entire collection. I can see all the fabric at once. In my past fabric storage drawers, the back part of the bin could not be visualized easily. My folded stash always sat ontop of each other making it difficult to see my stash. This way I see it all!!!!

The lid sits on top and it is easy to lift off to enter.

No locking mechanism on these lids.

This drawer has over 70 fat quarters and some yardage stored in it! There are 10 drawers, so that's 700 fat quarters plus!

Below is just a small taste of the fabric I inherited from my mom when she passed away in July. I had to make 5 trips in my car! Thus, I had to come up with a way to store all this stuff and give away stuff I just couldn't imagine using.

HOW DID I DO IT?

Here are the supplies I used...

You need:

1. Cutting mat (I double layered mine to not hurt my table)

2. X-acto knife 2.0

3. Applique pins (so far I have used 6 boxes of 350 pins)

4. white foam boards measuring 20 inches by 30 inches

(link here) cut into 5" x 7.5" rectangles. EACH white foam board I cut into 16 rectangles.

See above information about the boards.

5. Iron

6. Storage unit (mine is IKEA's PAX system)

Lots of ironing and folding the fabric onto the boards and then pinning. I ironed them to fit onto the board. Here I have 3 different fabrics on this board which saves space in my drawers. I put similar colors on them and made sure I could see each one. They overlap each other.

You needs lots of pins!

I have used 6 (350 in each) containers of applique pins!

Pinning the fabric with small applique pins works great! I pin at an angle directly through the fabric end into the board. Use a thimble to save your fingers! You need to stab the pins into the board making sure the pins are at an angle and don't go through to the other side. I sometimes have to redo them until I got the pins just right.

I just LOVE how I can keep a lid on top to keep the dust out! One is not enough, so off to the store next week to buy a second entire unit. I hope to decorate my room next so keep posted for more pictures once I get my space looking good!

I moved around all my furniture to make it fit. My design wall is now behind my sewing machine. In the top of the drawer I put things I don't use as often, interfacings and pellons. I have a step stool nearby. The IKEA PAX system with let you put many different types of drawers in them. I chose the plastic bins but they metal drawers, wood drawers, shoe racks and much more. This is just my system I designed. You can go to their website listed above and design it they way you want it. Thanks IKEA! Love my storage unit.

On, and Kevin's new truck...I am so happy to finally have something to haul stuff in if I need it!

Something I made 22 years ago

This is a cross-stich sampler I made in 1989 for my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary! I couldn't resist retrieving it from my grandparents home now that both of my grandparents and my mom have gone to heaven. This will be something I will cherish for a long time to come. It will remind me of how much they loved each other. It also reminds me of special time in my life because when I made this I had given birth to my first son Jimmy. It was done on finely woven linen. This gift was loved by my grandparents for 22 years!

His Funeral

Eugene Bernard "Gene" Gorrell, 93, of Lusby, MD passed away peacefully on October 24, 2011 at his residence. He was born on January 18, 1918 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Warren A. and Eda Kelly Gorrell. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Elizabeth "Betty" Gorrell and daughter, Suzanne Lindsay. Gene is survived by his loving children, Grier Smokovich, Beth Wilkinson, and Kelly Gorrell; grandchildren, Stephanie, Jay, Amy, Kelly Anne, Marybeth, Molly, Kate, Keegan, Emily, Kelly, Keith Allen, and Christopher; and fourteen great grandchildren.

My granddady was the most wonderful man I have ever knew! He was always there for me. He was born during WWI and served in the Navy in WWII. There were 14 million men and women who served in WWII and he was one of 2 million left. He was strong, loving, a wonderful family man and he took care of me many times.... when my parents were in a car accident one summer, he and MiMi cared for us the entire time while my parents were recovering.

Today we celebrated his life. Many friends and family came together in Solomons Island, Maryland where they lived and attended church for almost 40 years. Granddaddy built his own retirment home. He was an electrician involved in the building of many Washington DC landmarks...... The National Cathedral, The Smithsonium Institute, The Senate Building, The World Bank and The University of Maryland, College Park. Stories from his friends and family were shared at the funeral and we laughed and cried! At 93 he saw the world change! An amazing life!!! Love you Granddaddy!

Designing a wool quilt

It's time....time to plan a Graduation present for our daughter. She will be graduating from PEACE COLLEGE in Raleigh NC this spring with a degree in Forensic Anthropology. She is currently in the process of applying to a PhD program.

She took this picture in Mexico and it was one of her favorite pictures from the trip! I think it will be a beautiful quilt. Hopefully this will remind her about her great time and of her success.

How I did it.....I took the picture above and used photoshop to improve the clearness of the design. I next cropped it and printed it into 6 (8.5 x 11) sheets, printed out the 6 separate pages and then taped them all together.

Mom's stash, tears of joy...

Found some wonder surprises while going through my mom's sewing stash. Looks like she was planning on making me a new purse with this above flower. I had asked her for a dark purse for fall. She passed away in July and I am just now going through her room full for stuff. This is only half of it! Her sewing machine, supplies and fabric stash is next to amazing! I am so excited because whenever I make something with any of these fabrics, I will think of her. I think she has enough stuff here for me to never stop making things or thinking of her. She had tins and jars of buttons, monopoly peices, remote control insides, fabric, lining, interfacing, batting, ribbon, tons of embellishments and much, much more. I couldn't help but tear up when going through this gold mine! Everytime I see her stuff I think about how advanced and talented she was for her time. She was 70 years when she passed and I can't help but think how lucky I am that she passed on this talent to me. My sister and brother had no desire for any of this stuff. Amy, my sister only asked for me to provide her a simple sewing kit with needle and thread and everything else she knows she just ask me and I would do it for her! I am BLESSED!!!!

What have I been up to?

This quilt was first blogged about here! It is a sampler my mom (God rest her soul) made in 1982 that I am finishing for her. She made the squares but never did anything with them. I consider it a privilege to finish this and cherish forever!

This makes three squares done and all the borders around the squares! This means one third of the quilt is done! Yippie!

I hope all my blogging friends are doing well. I have been busy working full time and overtime, thus not getting much blogging done! Overtime to pay for rennovating our kitchen plus with the three kids in college every extra $$ going out as fast as it comes in!

Baby quilt finish

A simple log cabin with lots of pinks for a new baby girl named LucyKate, my new cousin, to be born in October. I made this quilt for my Aunt Judy. She is going to give it her son and daughter-in-law for the birth of her first grand baby!

The back is made with lots of spare fabrics, left over from previous quilts. Nothing bought new for this one.

As you can see, trying to learn my new camera, too blurry! I already mailed the quilt so I can't retake the pics! UGH!

I machine quilted everything on this quilt except the label.

Pink Quilt Completed!

This pink quilt was made to give to my Aunt Beth today. She recently completed breast cancer surgery and radiation therapy. She is a strong lady who has always been there for me. I hid a few pink ribbon fabrics into the quilt for a suttle surprise. I embellished the quilt with some hand work with pearl cotton, hand quilted it and then added a label to the back as my signature.

Before mom passed away in July, she helped with the picking of fabrics and the idea so I added her name to the label. Aunt Beth is her sister, so it means a great deal to have a quilt my mom helped with.

BeBe was added to the back because that is what her grandchildren call her.

The label was made and then added to the back after hand quilting the entire quilt. I tacked it to the back.

Her three children and husband's name was hand embroidered into the front. I used a verigated pink pearl cotton to add the details. I really enjoyed making this quilt. While mom was near the end in the hospital, I was hand quilting this one and so it will always mean more to me than anyone will ever know! Aunt Beth said I can come and visit it anytime! Luckily she lives less than 2 miles from me!
