I am so excited to spend Christmas at home in Florida with my family, and have my boyfriend visit my home for the first time. Christmas in Florida is different than anywhere else in the world-- instead of snowman building, we build sand castles.. we put lights on our palm trees, and it's not unusual to spend Christmas Eve watching the sunset at the beach.

It's not a snowy white traditional Christmas, but I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

I am so in love with these vintage Florida Christmas portraits from the Florida State Archives. It perfectly evokes a classic coastal Christmas.

How to: Look Cute in Cold Weather

Today I experienced my first snow storm ever. Growing up in Florida i'm not versed in snowman building, shoveling, or winter dressing. So, it's been a whole new experience for me! The power went out for long periods of time, but I still managed to enjoy my first snow day!

I always see lot of stylish winter fashion inspiration, but rarely any for the really cold weather that we get in the Midwest and other parts of the country. So i've pulled together some of the pieces I think are essential to looking stylish in really cold weather and snow (it is possible)! I actually worked in outerwear merchandising for a year so I have some great background on the subject!

the essentials:

lightweight down jacket: these packable pieces, are great for layering and stowing away in a bag, but also offering maximum warmth while still lightweight.
cute boot socks: will keep tootsies warm & toasty in the snow or indoors
fur lined parka: these military style parkas are super warm, but stylish too with fur trim hoods and olive green
waterproof boots: these sorel snow boots were the best investment I made when I moved to the frozen tundra, they keep feet warm & dry, and are actually stylish too
down coat: when I first moved here, I insisted I would never buy a puffy down coat, but they are seriously the warmest thing you can wear- and you can find some flattering feminine fits
fleece lined tights: cold wind cuts through regular tights and leaves you freezing when you're wearing dresses & skirts, a fleece lined pair will keep you from shivering all night!
warm & toasty boots: everyone loves ugg boots because they keep feet so warm, but I hate wearing the same thing as everyone else-- these boots are a great update
chic knit hat: an accessory that is functional too, for keeping your ears warm!
colorful ski jacket: a ski jacket is a colorful layering piece on or off the slopes. choose a style that is "fully seam sealed" which means it is 100% waterproof, essential for wet snow

Tulle and feather skirts poke out of the entrance to Carmen Creation, a family-owned boutique specializing in handmade Victorian-inspired dresses for women and girls. It's impossible to miss the store at 321 1/2 Olympic Blvd., as onlookers constantly "ooh" an "ahh" while passing by Carmen's creations. Carmen has been sewing Victorian couture dresses and accessories for over 24 years. Each gown is one-of-a-kind, and often times custom made to order. Every aspect of the design and manufacturing process is directly overseen by Carmen herself; she picks every fabric and applique used in each design. In fact, most of the fabrics used are hand-dyed, and detailing is so important in the creation of each piece that on average a dress takes an entire day to make.

Carmen specializes in flower girl, Christening, and Quinceañera gowns. Wedding gowns are available for custom order, as are First Communion dresses and costumes for plays and theater productions. Carmen's costume work has been featured on shows such as So you think you can dance? and American Idol. She's also dressed A-list celebrities, the likes of Heidi Klum and Jennifer Lopez!

A self-taught seamstress and designer, Carmen began her career in interior design creating Victorian inspired home accessories. However, creating art has always been a passion of hers. As a child in Mexico, she taught herself ceramics and has been creating ever since. We don't think she's ever looked back.

What we love about Carmen is not just the obvious passion she has for her craft, but the love she sews into every piece. Every one of her dresses tells a story. Whether it be a fairy tale, a love story, or the simple beauty of a new beginning, she has the perfect dress for every special occasion.

The abundance of all the most pleasantly moments in the whole year is exactly at this time of the year. All the snow outside makes me happy and fancy like a child. I have always been a big dreamer, so this Christmas atmosphere makes me even more nostalgic. I think there is nothing more special in the humans life than the moment when your dream comes true. Even if you think that your dream is absolutely ridiculous, never stop dreaming and one day you may realize that your fear to pursue your dream was actually the most ridiculous think. So, I urge you at least at this magic time of the year to really enjoy your life, left behind all your problems, stop fussing, close your eyes and just dream...

There is only one week until I will be able to fully enjoy my winter, spending my winter holidays on my beloved hometown Chisinau. I am so glad that this year winter came to us earlier and there is such a magic atmosphere outside so I feel like a child during an evening walk I can't take my eyes from all these sparkling lights around me. Now talking about my outfit, you may have already noticed that I am a big fan of different type of blazers. There you can see my new acquisition, a beautiful military jacket, that I have been craving for a long time. It quickly became one of my favorite items for this cold season, so I can't get enough of wearing it. I like how it looks with khaki pants, bright turquoise blouse and my new amazing burgundy bag.

Styled to Rock Casting Call

Style Network contacted us with some very interesting news a few weeks ago and we are excited to finally be able to share it with you. Style will be launching its first-ever fashion design competition series, Styled to Rock, from executive producer Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Yea, that Rihanna. Style is inviting all of you to their open casting. As per the email we received, "Slated to premier in 2013, the hour-long 10-episodes series will give 12-up-and-coming designers, hand picked by Rihanna, the opportunity of a lifetime - to create unique fashion pieces for A-list celebrity talent."

Contestants must be able to take their designs from conception to reality, meaning you must be able to design, manufacture, assemble, construct, and style a variety of garments an items. For more information and to submit your application for the casting, visit the Styled to Rock casting website.

One of my go-to outfits lately has been throwing on a colorful paid shirt & statement necklace- if i'm feeling extra bold, a pair of mint cords too! I love the combination of all of my favorite fall trends into one brightly hued outfit!

Baroque Layers

I am so glad the real winter have finally come and even if it is really hard to make some outfit photos now, I will endeavor to keep updated my blog. I am almost done with all these awful semestrial tests and now I cannot wait to get back in my beloved Chisinau. Now talking about my outfit, I am so glad to present you my new, baroque inspired dress that goes so well with this snow-white background. Even if the dress has already some small details like golden spikes on the neck, I felt the need to add also a peplum belt to make it look more sophisticated. Not to mention my new oversized coat that I have shown you recently. I just can't get enough of wearing it, I literally forgot about my other coats. Most of all I like the fact that I can wear like a dozens of layers underneath, so I can keep me warm.

Holiday Sample Sales 11.7.2012

Today is the day folks! Sample Sale Friday is here and as always we've got some of our favorite sales below. We did a quick run through the buildings this morning and found super cozy sweaters at the California Market Center (CMC) for $20 and no line at Wildfox (located on the 3rd floor of the Cooper Building), which all of you Wildfox-lovers out there know how incredibly rare that is. Sample Sales are also taking place in The New Mart and Gerry buildings. You can find a list of The New Mart sample sales here. You'll want to follow the signs at the Gerry, and definitely stop by Vertigo on the 2nd floor.

Oh and don't forget, you get $6 parking at the CMC today. Happy Shopping!

December 12 & Christmas Celebrations at the Flower District

Poinsettias line the shelves, tables, counters, and floors of the Flower District (located in the Fashion District) in anticipation of December 12 - Poinsettia Day and Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe) - and the official start of the floral holiday season. Red and white potted poinsettia plants are the classic holiday staple and beginning next week, December 10, fresh pre-made wreaths will also be available. It's our very own floral holiday wonderland! Poinsettia plants can be purchased for $5 at the California Flower Mall.

Fun Flower Facts: It's believed Poinsettias first became associated with Christmas in the 17th century, when Franciscan missionaries settled in an area of Southern Mexico where Poinsettias grew. According to one legend, the Poinsettia acquired its bright red color while being used in a nativity procession, becoming "la flor de Nochebuena" or Holy Night (Christmas Eve) flower. In reality, Poinsettias have always been red. They were first cultivated by the Aztecs as a gift from the gods. The color red symbolized blood and the sacrifice the gods had made to create the universe. Very different meanings, no?

Día de la Virgen: Along with Poinsettias, the California Flower Mall expects shipments of red and white roses in time for the Día de la Virgen altars and flower offerings. Flower Mall vendors have begun taking orders for custom Día de la Virgen "arcos" and altar arrangements. The California Flower Mall, as well as many other merchants in the Flower District, will have extended hours on December 11 and 12 to accommodate shoppers for the Catholic holiday.

The Holiday Spirit

New Rates for Street Parking in the Fashion District

Look for the blue "P" parking sticker on the meters.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) has made changes to parking meter rates in the Fashion District. If you plan on using street parking on your next visit, please pay close attention to the new rates and time limits.

The changes are part of LADOT's year-long LA Express Park demonstration project. Parking rates at the affected meters will fluctuate throughout the day, depending on the demand for parking in the area. These meters are marked with blue “P” labels. Rate maps showing the hourly rates can be downloaded from the LA Express Park website.

As part of the changes, these parking meters can now be accessed via the Parker mobile application. Parker allows shoppers to locate available meters in the area, decipher street signs, and feed the meters via mobile device. To learn more about Parker, please visit www.theparkerapp.com.

LPF Cooks: Healthy Taco Salad & Made from Scratch Margs

True Story: it is the absolute worst time of year you could possibly diet. Though, I hope to think of it as less of a diet and more of a transition back into healthier eating. Wisconsin has wayyy too much delicious food, and it's all about balance (keep your balance y'all!).

My boyfriend and I are suffering through our holiday dieting together (with small indulgences along the way of course; see: made from scratch margs). We whipped up this taco salad for dinner the other night, and I didn't even miss the tortilla chips!

Healthy Taco Salad:

Ingredients:

1 lb lean ground sirloin

2 tbsp. seasoning (don't buy the pre-made packs, mix your own)-a pinch of cumin; black pepper, chili powder, garlic powder; salt

1/2 head of iceburg lettuce

1 onion

1 green pepper

2 c. of romaine lettuce

1/4 c. green onion

2 tbsp. cilantro

1/4 c. of reduced fat cheese

Optional condiments: salsa, sour cream, wholly guacamole (my favorite!)

1. Sautee onions and green pepper in a pan with a tbsp. of olive oil; set aside when onions are translucent.

2. Add seasoned ground beef to pan on medium-high heat, add back in onions & peppers when cooked.

3. Top lettuce mix with ground beef & veggies, sprinkle cheese, cilantro and whatever condiments you'd like

Save calories by: skipping the tortilla chips, using reduced fat cream cheese, and not using high-sodium pre-mixed taco seasoning

This is a much healthier way to make margaritas, and significantly less sugar and better natural flavor than store bought margarita mixes.

Made from Scratch Margs:

Ingredients:

1/2 lime

1 tbsp. simple syrup (it's easy to make your own- we store ours in a squeeze bottle!)

2 oz. tequila

2 oz triple sec

1. In a cocktail shaker, squeeze lime, add simple syrup, tequila & triple sec, add ice and give it a few good shakes

2. Pour over a margarita glass and fresh ice.

Experiment with margarita flavors; add muddled strawberries or grapefruit juice for a fun twist.

Syrup Loft 3rd Annual Holiday Art & Gift Show

Syrup Loft will be hosting its 3rd Annual Holiday Art & Gift Show every Saturday and Sunday in December 3-8 p.m. and every Wednesday 6-10 p.m. The show features unique art, photography, jewelry, sculptures, ceramics and one-of-a-kind gifts made by local artists. Prices range from about $25-$250, with special stocking-stuffers added every week.

Syrup Loft will also open on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 6-11 p.m. for Downtown's Artwalk.

Exhibiting artists include: Alexandra Underhill, Alissa Warshaw, Andrea La Hue aka "Random Act," Andreanna Iakovidis, Benjamin Simpson, Charles Sherman, Chelsea Dicksion, David "DAK" Knudsen, Daphne Vegas, Deb Vogt, Debbi Anne, Ismael Cazarez, Jim Stern, Sia Aryai, Sylvie Cogranne, Terri Bromberg, Thomas Cox, Tiger Moon, and Yoni Koenig.

One of our favorite gift-ideas were these gorgeous, handmade scarves. The photo doesn't do them justice, but the pink and green hues are beautiful. We are also big fans of the fun, bright-colored jewelry. The pops of neon are perfect for adding color to our outfits year round.

How amazing are these? Each piece is one-of-a-kind, handmade, and beautifully detailed. Only these two are left!

Fair Isle // Four Ways

Fair Isle is one of those winter trends that is totally classic, but has been given some fresh updates in recent years by putting it in trendy colors and new fabrications. It's definitely one of the must-have patterns of the season.

I have some outfit ideas that won't leave you looking like a vintage seventies ski bunny (though, I must admit, they were pretty chic)!

Look 1: Pair this Modcloth fair isle sweater in trendy winter shades with skinny mint cords & studded navy loafers for a look thats fireside fabulous.
Look 2: Casual but chic-- this Titlenine wrap sweater is flattering with a pair of jeans tucked into these fair isle sweater boots. Keep jewelry simple like this monogram necklace from Swell Caroline

So, I know that enough time have passed since my last post, but I believe that the styling I suggest will compensate for this delay.

This outfit, with guest my cousin (part 2), combines a romantic, vinatge, dress with a special detail in sleeves, with leopard high heel shoes (very fashionable this year!!)

The hairdo adds to the romantic mood, travelling as back in time....

This dress is a buy that I have made recently in a very good price! You can find items in very good prices today, and if you combine them ''correctly'' you can create unique, really beautiful looks!

So, today is a first day of winter and I still can't believe it. Christmas is approaching and even there is not any sign of snow, beautifully decorated streets lined with tiny, sparkling firs are adding instant Christmas cheer. Now talking about my outfit, I know it is more autumnal but I cannot avoid sharing it with you. It really reminds me about Indiana Jones movies and at the same time it looks like British style. I think the background perfectly completed my look and created a specific old atmosphere.
