These guns that she's campaigning against are not military firearms, they are simple semi-automatic rifles that look similar to their military counterparts.

2. "They fall into the hands, one way or the other [of criminals], they are sold out of trunks and back-seats of automobiles in cities as well as gun-shows with no questions asked."
This is a straw-man argument if I ever heard one. Because this bill that she is proposing has no operational logic behind it (see point #1) she has to rally the emotions of the people to support this. Hence this silly argument. Guess what? There are lots of things sold out of the back of trunks in back-seats of automobiles. We bought a camera that way off of craigslist, should cameras be illegal?

She's trying to put AR- 15s in the same light as illegal drugs.

3. [list of shootings]. The common thread in these shootings is each gunman used a semi-automatic assault weapon, or large capacity ammunition magazines.
The only common thread? Here's a few more items that the shootings had in common:
1. They were committed in public places.
2. They were all done by males.
3. All the shooters were atheist.
Therefor, we should make public places illegal, outlaw all men, and get rid of all atheists. Once again, this doesn't hold water when you examine it.

4. Military-style assault weapons have but one purpose, and in my view that's a military purpose, to hold at the hip if possible, to spray fire, to be able to kill large numbers.
Once again here she tries to blur the line between AR-15's and true military firearms. To go back to point #1, she's attacking firearms that are scarcely more deadly than a Ruger 10/22 or a semi-automatic shotgun, and so they do not have a military purpose.

When I got to the part about holding "at the hip, if possible" I couldn't contain myself. She must watch too much Rambo, for no soldiers were ever trained to fire from the hip. You couldn't hit a paper plate at 20 yards that way! Also, you can only spray-fire if you are using a fully-automatic firearm, which is illegal to own in the US.

I'll let you draw your own thoughts from the rest of the clip, and drop them in the comments section below!

~ Caleb Grove

Thine is The Kingdom: Gender Roles from the Bakery

Thine is The Kingdom: Gender Roles from the Bakery: So the Pentagon is opening up more combat roles in the military for women. I decided to wait until today to author that post, as I wasn't sure yet what 2012 still held for me (which was really just an audiobook).

2012 was a year of change for me. A change of vision, a change of focus.

Most of this began last February, when I started to think about the possibility of doing web design professionally. From this came OnRamp Web Design. Prior to 2012 I had never really though of web design as anything more than a hobby. Many people are resistant to turn their hobby into a profession, as that act often takes away the enjoyment of the activity, However, I have found my run with OnRamp to be quite the opposite. I love my work more than I'd ever loved it before, and the web fascinates me beyond measure.

The spring was pretty busy for me, as my time was split between school and getting OnRamp off the ground.

Then, in early June, I packed my bags and headed 500 miles east and landed smack-dab in the middle of Montana. I spent the entire summer there working on a cattle ranch. Even though I had spent parts of my last two summers doing the same, there was still quite the learning curve.

I worked long and hard days over there, getting up at 6:00 and going to bed at 11:00. It seemed most of my time was spent racing about on a four wheeler, wether it be delivering salt and mineral to the cows, checking on the grass, or spraying weeds. Once when I was spraying a patch of thistles, the rear wheel of the four-wheeler dropped into a ditch and flipped the rig over. I didn't have time to get off of it, and so rolled over with it. In the end, neither I nor the four wheeler were hurt at all, thanks be to God!

I loved the people in Montana more than anything. The simple, thoughtful, and kind lives they led were a prime example of Christ's work in people hearts through the generations, and have inspired me to be a spokesperson of their thoughts and opinions.

There is a time for everything, according to the Bible, and in September it was time for be to head back to the hustle and bustle of the big city. Bidding those fine folks farewell for the time, I began my trip back home.

During the summer, my parents and I decided that my schooling for the coming fall would be running my own business. I am truly grateful for them letting me pursue my passion. Once I got home, it was time for web design work to commence in ernest. One thing I learned was that, even though they sounded highly interested, many potential clients back out at the last minute, meaning that the first half of the fall was not quite so full as I had thought it would be. This was not a bad thing as it turned out, because it allowed me to spend that time focusing on learning some of the more advanced techniques and coding that goes into creating an amazing website.

All the time from getting home to now could pretty much be summed up as computer work. I got my own iMac, which is sweet and allowed my sisters to use the families computer, found my way to twitter (which is epic), built my own website (calebgrove.com), started another blog (on that website), spent a lot of time in the Freeway community, and have done various jobs for clients.

Christmas was enjoyable, and now I'm looking forward to what 2013 holds for me. My plan for 2013, so far, is to stay home this summer to work on the business, and to really get my name known in web design circles.

How did 2012 treat you? One of the issues is that a blog looses a lot of credibility if that's all it is, and I have big thoughts for this blog and calebgrove.com in general.

My reasoning was simple; I wanted a place to unite/showcase all the various odds and ends that I've created, a place for me to help other web designers, and a home for Anson S. This blog will remain as a place for me to write stuff related to politics and religion in general. The web design/tech side of stuff will branch off to my other new blog, found at calebgrove.com.

Anther reason is that the few posts I did write here about web design/tech received a fair number of visits from google searches, but none generated subscribers as those people were not really concerned about politics (I guess). This way you can pick what you want to hear about, and it should begin to really bump up my readership stats. Hopefully some of the readers of my other blog will morph into Anson S as well.

Any thoughts/suggestions regarding the new website?

~Sir Caleb

P.S. Last time I was updated, there was 28 dead, 20 of whom were children.

This begs the question: Why?

Why do we suddenly have so many school shootings?

The answer, like most everything else, does not lie in politicians, but rather the heart of the people. What more can you expect in a country that freaks out over a shooting of school children, but is in support of killing those same children when they are yet smaller and more defenseless, and makes that act legal?

The media has already jumped on this as another time to push their anti-weapon agendas. Rest assured that shortly you will be hearing the familiar "If guns were illegal, this wouldn't have happened". The man was using a semi-automatic .223, and those will be the first to go. Labeled "assault rifles", even though by definition they aren't, they have withstood the brunt of the anti-gun legislation thus far.

I have heard of many other solutions, all crazily expensive and difficult to implement. Have four security guards assigned to each classroom with the teacher locking the doors, etc.

Realize though, that any solution besides mass revival won't really fix the problem.

However, I think I have a short-term solution. It would be easy, fairly cheap, and highly effective. Jump into the mind of an insane person:

If you wanted to kill as many people in as short of a time possible, where would you go? Not a supermarket, there are too many adults, some of whom would be carrying firearms. How about a school? There is not chance of meeting opposition at first, as there are not guns on school grounds. High densities of people in classrooms makes it even more perfect.

Although we can't fix the second point, the first would be obliterated. What if there were more guns in a school than you would find in a supermarket? It wouldn't be attempted, at least not near so often as it is now.

My suggestion is to arm all the teachers willing to carry a weapon. Make them take hunters-education and go though all the classes and tests associated with getting a concealed-carry permit. Make sure they are mentally very stable. Then give them a pistol. They would keep it on their person where a kid couldn't get to it easily.

If we had this system implemented in the school that had the shooting, I can guarantee you that the result would have been different. Instead of having 28 dead, you might have had 2-5, including the gunman himself. It might not have even happened at all.

Changes

There are some changes in the pipeline!

The first is that this blog has moved, from anson-s.blogspot.com to anson-s.calebgrove.com. Both my dad and my younger brother filled their tags (The other younger brother just tagged along), but mine has gone woefully unattached to any four-legged beastie.

This was not for lack of opportunities. We have located an AWESOME hunting spot, crawling with mule-deer. I had at least 3 very good chances to bring home some venison, but when the time came to pull the trigger, I hesitated. I would try to screw up my courage, but by the time I was ready to shoot it would be too late. Either the deer would leave at a run, trot out of range (150 yards with a muzzleloader), stand against the skyline, or otherwise make it impossible to shoot.

Once we had just breached a hill, and were cautiously moving forward, when my Dad announced that there were some deer up ahead. A quick glance revealed that we had spooked a herd of mule-deer does (the only deer we could shoot). We stood like statues for a minute or two while frantically developing a battle-plan. The end conclusion was that my dad, who had already gotten his deer, and my youngest brother, who was too young to hunt, would stay in plain sight of the deer to distract them while I and my other brother snuck around to the side and got within shooting range. We quietly snuck along a cliff edge. When I figured we were close enough, we popped our heads over a rock outcropping to spot the deer 75 yards away. I set up for a shot, lining up a deer in my sights. It was standing broadside and didn't seem to be too concerned.

It was as close to a perfect shot as possible. But I hesitated, and lost that chance.

I regret not pulling the trigger. I sorely regret that choice (yes, it was a choice).

Regret is not a bad thing, regardless of what the modern psychologists say. It, like doubt, is neutral. What we do with it is what makes it good or bad. It should not cause us to keep from trying again, but rather should prompt us to make the right choice later on when that question once again is presented to us. We shouldn't live in the past, but we can't ignore the past either. We need to be able to look back and learn, which involves regretting what we did wrong, while deciding the proper way to do it in the future.

I didn't learn that fast enough, which mean that I passed up several easy shots in the course of the week. I finally did realize that though, but lo and behold, the next day (and probably the last day this year) we found no does (it's a doe-only season). We have never had a single day where we saw no does in two years of hunting in the same spot. It was a little perturbing.

As Christians, we tend to pass up many opportunities to be the salt and light of the world because we hesitate. We think "I'm not an expert, I don't have my bible with me, I can't speak clearly, what if I mess up, I'm not perfect, aren't there other people who are more prepared than I?". What's often worse is that I don't think we regret these missed opportunities nearly as much as we should.

I would like to end with a challenge; look back at the past week, and think of all the chances you had to share Christ with the world. Think about them, and regret the missed opportunities. Don't stop at the regret though, utilize it! Get a pocket Bible, and bring it along. Spend more time in The Word. But more than anything, make the most of the opportunities that God has given you. You may not have those chances again, and souls are not something trivial.

-Caleb

NEEDED: Opinions

Folks, this blog is at a crossroads. The stated purpose of Anson S is a place for me to write my opinions on two subject areas; politics and tech. I feel that this blog's scope has shrunk to just the first, not that this is a bad thing, but it does mean that my most honorable readers probably don't care to hear my thoughts on HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, UX, and more.

So, now I feel it is time to make a decision. Here are the options:

1. Continue using just one blog. As I said above, the problem with this method is that it means my two completely different groups of readers would have to be fine to get notified of posts that don't interest them in the least.

2. Split into two different blogs. Anson S would be dedicated to politics, social issues, religion, and the like, whereas the second blog would be just for web stuff.

What do you all think?

We Have Forgotten

"We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown.

But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.

Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!"

~Abraham Lincoln

Take a moment to re-read this quote. This is the fourth redesign for a blog that's been running just under a year!"

Guess what? You're right. I am crazy. If I wasn't, life would be sooo boring!

Enough rambling. About the redesign:
Blueprint 4.1 ("Paper") has been my most time consuming re-designs so far. I built it from scratch. It's interesting to see how my blog has evolved over the year. The first one I built in iWeb, a now discontinued piece of WYSIWYG software from Apple. The second was built by mixing Freeway Pro 5.5 and Blogger. The third was just a facelift. Now we have this one, also built with Freeway, but with a lot of hand-coded CSS to further customize the appearance and more advanced tweaks.

A good example of this is the "comments" link found at the bottom of every post. I HATED the blogger default, a teeny-tiny text link, hardly what I'd call visible. In my mind, the comments are the highlights of the blog, so you can understand that I wanted to make it stand out. Here is a sample of the CSS that went into making it:

a:link {
text-decoration: underline;
}
.comment-link {
font-family: 'Open Sans',HelveticaNeue,Helvetica Neue,sans-serif;
background: none repeat scroll 0 0 #313436;
border-radius: 4px 4px 4px 4px;
color: white !important;
float: right;
font-size: 14px !important;
padding: 13px 55px;
}

The other big change, besides the new interface, is new fonts. It used to be that a webdesigner was restricted to about 11 font choices, because those were the only fonts that were universally available on almost all computers. However, now we have web fonts, which, although they have the potential of slowing down a webpage, allow for much more creativity without having to revert to graphic text.

Much like my last design, I plan on converting Paper to a Freeway template. I'll announce it here. You can still download the template for 3.x, codenamed Smart, from here.

Here is what Blueprint 3.7 looked like (click to enlarge):

So, what do you all think of the new design?
(FYI: the best compliment I could get would be that it doesn't look remotely like a blogger blog.)

Post-Election Thoughts

Okay, I know the election ended awhile ago. However, I've been extremely busy with another website. I've had a partial break for a few days, so I took some time out to write here.

Although this probably doesn't even need saying, I was severely disappointed at the result of the presidential election. For a day or so I couldn't comprehend how we, as a country, re-elected Mr Obama again.

As soon as the result was announced, most of the conservatives began hunting for methods to shift the blame. They said it was because of the illegal aliens. They said it was because of the so-called ObamaPhones. They said it was because of almost anything other than what it really was.

The reason why Obama was reelected is because We The People voted for him. It's a simple fact, and a sobering one. It really showcases how far, as a society, America has come. After four years of bad economic decisions, ramped-up regulations, increased penalties for us business owners, and more, we voted for this fellow! Four years ago, he didn't have very much of a track record, and I gave his voters the benefit of the doubt. However, everybody know who he is now.

Think about what he did while President for four years. Now he doesn't have to worry about being reelected and so can't be held accountable for his decisions. Think about what he'll do. The NRA states that he has a huge stack of gun regulations ready. It wouldn't surprise me. ObamaCare was just the beginning.

So now that you're throughly depressed and ready to move to Canada, I have two items of interest on a more encouraging note.

1. Have you every noticed how a pendulum swings? Public opinion is much like that. We have swung to the far left in this election, meaning that we will probably swing to the far right next one. This may actually be a good thing. I would rather have someone like Ron Paul for one term than Romney for two.

2. As Christians, these are just details. We can't loose for winning. Even if we are killed for our beliefs, which is often seen as the ultimate version of loosing, we win because of what comes after the life here on earth. In the end, this world will end and all things will be righted by the one and only perfect judge.

In the end, we win.

The Impact of Wolves in Yellowstone: An interview with JD King, producer of Crying Wolf

As I have worked on a cattle ranch in central Montana, I have heard the concerns of the booming wolf populations first hand from the ranchers in that area.

One of the first books I read on wolves was from someone who had tracked them for years. This book described in detail the brutality of the wolves, which really made me oppose the actions taken by the government in reintroducing these animals. Wolves kill, not only for food, but also for recreation. The author had seen entire herds of elk hamstrung by the packs, with only a few consumed. The rest of the herd slowly died, as the wolves hamstrung the animals and left them alive. Those that they ate, they ate alive.

Seomthing that really surprised me, at the time (not so much anymore), was that the media hailed the reintroduction of wolves as a great victory.

However, this trend appears to be reversing starting with the movie Crying Wolf.

You can purchase the film from cryingwolfmovie.com

I asked JD King for a interview, and he graciously made time in his busy schedule to answer a few of my questions.

Caleb: What was it that caused you to be passionate about this subject?

JD: I grew up on a working cattle ranch in a beautiful valley in southwest Montana. In addition to living the rural lifestyle, which included cattle, horses, hunting, and fishing, I loved studying applied worldview and ideology during my homeschool years, especially in terms of biblical creationism. I challenged myself to come up with my own arguments against atheism and evolutionism. So before I really knew beans about wolves, I knew that with the film I wanted to give people the opportunity to look at an issue like this through the lens of a biblical worldview. That's what I am passionate about. It doesn't matter what you're dealing with, it all goes back to theology and worldview, and Christianity is the answer. Christ is King, that's what I want the world to know and to take away from any film I create.

Caleb: What was the most unexpected information you unearthed during the making of your movie?

JD: I was shocked by almost everything I would learn, including:

                             - The wolves that were introduced were not a native species, thereby breaking the law of the Endangered Species Act.

                             - The affected states and the US Congress said no to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service's plan to reintroduce wolves.

                             - Because congress would not fund the wolf transplant, the USFWS stole upwards of $60-70 million dollars to do it anyway.

                             - Numerous, "secret wolf reintroductions" happened in the '60s and '70s that were equally illegal to the publicized one of '95.

                             - The Canadian Wolves cause so much stress to the wildlife here that in addition to the game animals that are killed by wolves,

                             - Reproduction rates drop dramatically and abortion rates skyrocket. +90% or more of game in some areas has disappeared.

Caleb: Have you been surprised by the response that Crying Wolf received from the media in general?

JD: We really haven't been in the mainstream media much. The agricultural and rural magazines have been very welcoming. Feedback has been over 90% positive. Because of our internet release which garnished close to 90,000 views, people all over the continent and even across the ocean have taken time to view the film and many have sent me messages of thanks for making this film. It has made it all well worth it!

Caleb: More specifically, what have the "tree huggers" done in retort?

JD: Other than receiving a few critical emails, not much. The emails are usually filled with name-calling and hate, not a point-by-point rebuttal. I was called an anti-Christ wife-beating slave-trader once. But no challenges to debate and no successful hacking jobs yet. There have been a couple of websites that were talking heavily about my film, and then some environmental groups bought up all the ad space and filled it with pro-wolf propaganda. I think the other side has a very hard time arguing with the personal testimony of the ranchers, outfitters, and business owners as well as with the shady history of the "re-infestation", as I call it. I mean, how do you argue for theft, lies, and corruption?

Thanks JD for you time!

In case you aren't following my blog, JD has recently announced that he is working on a new film, this one centered on the green movement, and how it really isn't green at all.

Sorry.

Sorry, but we just got 4 more years.

<strike>Even though Romney won the popular vote,</strike> Obama will continue to be honored with the title of Mr. President.

Update: As the finishing votes came in, Obama also won in the popular votes. Too late, I had picked it up. Darn.

It was a lady on the line. She curtly prattled off about how important this coming presidential election is. When I agreed, she asked me how much money I would donate to Romney's campaign.

"Well", I explained, "I don't agree with Romney on a lot of topics. Many people would call me a Constitutionalist, though I personally prefer the term Wierdo."

Then, much to my shock and terror, she, as monotone and "bleh" as ever, replied: "Well Mr Grove, I see that you are still registered as a Republican, so apparently we haven't completely lost you to the dark side."

THE DARK SIDE!?? She was insinuating that I was a cohort of Darth Vadar because I don't agree with Romney!

The most ironic part came next: "Mr Grove, I'm sure you realize that this is not the time to think about our differences..."

Huh? After saying that I was with the bad guys, she says not to worry about our differences! Oh, the irony!

"...but rather to unite. How much would you like to donate to Romney?"

Arg. In this years Republican nominations, did you watch the debates? In these debates, the moderators asked people not to applaud the candidates because of time constraints. While, for most of the candidates the spectators obeyed this rule, there was loud applause EVERY time Ron Paul made a statement. He was the only person who the fickle voters seemed to continually agree with. He was never attacked on his political or personal history, because he is highly consistent. He had virtually no vulnerabilites compared to the others.

However, if you payed attention, both the GOP and the media were doing all they could, in a polite manner, to make sure he didn't make the ticket. The moderators focused their questions mainly on the two most liberal candidates, while the media reported that Romney won almost every debate although he had more booing crowds and less cheering than any of the others.

They (the media and the GOP) had decided who would win before it even began. 'Twas rigged. Then they just had to make it look like a real race.

Basically, they just ignored Ron Paul, attempting to make us believe that Mr Paul was "un-electable" by acting like to only real candidates were Romney and Gingrich. And guess what?

It worked.
