He talked about the nation's founding fathers and the fact that "&lt;i&gt;God-given rights&lt;/i&gt;" were at the heart of the Declaration of Independence.  &lt;br /&gt;

I wondered what Santorum would say about the "&lt;i&gt;God-given rights&lt;/i&gt;" of those men and women who were enslaved by our Founding Fathers?  &lt;b&gt;Did they have any "&lt;i&gt;God-given rights&lt;/i&gt;"?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Now, I learn that there are some in Santorum's Republican Party who no longer want to be troubled by the inconvenience of our nation's history of slavery.  &lt;b&gt;There are some GOP (aka, Tea Party) in Tennessee who want to re-write the history books being used in our public schools to give a positive spin on slavery&lt;/b&gt;. These Republican (or Tea Party) activists say that the way textbooks are worded now can portray out founding fathers in a negative light. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;"&lt;i&gt;Slavery is of course portrayed in the textbooks nowadays I'm sure as a totally negative thing. You'll found numerous beauty shops and stores inside along with the branch office for &lt;a href="http://www.rmfclassic.pl/"&gt;RMF radio broadcasting company&lt;/a&gt;. It lies in the &lt;a href="http://www.gdansk-life.com/poland/sopot-monte-cassino"&gt;Bohaterów Monte Cassino street&lt;/a&gt;, the town's most prominent promenade.&lt;br /&gt;

Are Republicans so disrespectful of Black people in this nation that they don't see where shyt like this is &lt;b&gt;NOT&lt;/b&gt; funny?&lt;br /&gt;

I usually remind people that it's never a good idea to use &lt;b&gt;Adolph Hitler&lt;/b&gt; as a comparison for anybody at anytime.  I guess I'll need to also note that it is never a good idea to show a Black man on a slave ship. Just before graduation, he married his first wife, Vivian "Buster" Burey. Their twenty-five year marriage ended with her death from cancer in 1955.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;In 1930, he applied to the University of Maryland Law School, but was denied admission because he was Black.&lt;/b&gt; &lt;i&gt;This was an event that was to haunt him and direct his future professional life.&lt;/i&gt; &lt;br /&gt;

Thurgood sought admission and was accepted at the &lt;a href="http://www.law.howard.edu/"&gt;Howard University Law School&lt;/a&gt; that same year and came under the immediate influence of the dynamic new dean, &lt;a href="http://www.charleshoustonbar.org/history.html"&gt;Charles Houston&lt;/a&gt;, who instilled in all of his students the desire to apply the tenets of the Constitution to all Americans. &lt;br /&gt;

Ferguson&lt;/a&gt; which established the legal doctrine called, "&lt;i&gt;separate but equal&lt;/i&gt;." Marshall's first major court case came in 1933 when he successfully sued the University of Maryland to admit a young African American Amherst University graduate named Donald Gaines Murray. &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;blockquote&gt;Applauding Marshall's victory, author H.L. Mencken wrote that the decision of denial by the University of Maryland Law School was "&lt;i&gt;brutal and absurd&lt;/i&gt;," and they should not object to the "&lt;i&gt;presence among them of a self-respecting and ambitious young Afro-American well prepared for his studies by four years of hard work in a class A college&lt;/i&gt;."&lt;/blockquote&gt;Thurgood Marshall followed his Howard University mentor, Charles Houston to New York and later became Chief Counsel for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (&lt;a href="http://www.naacp.org/legal/history/"&gt;NAACP&lt;/a&gt;). &lt;b&gt;During this period, Mr. Marshall was asked by the United Nations and the United Kingdom to help draft the constitutions of the emerging African nations of Ghana and what is now Tanzania&lt;/b&gt;. It was felt that the person who so successfully fought for the rights of America's oppressed minority would be the perfect person to ensure the rights of the White citizens in these two former European colonies. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After amassing an impressive record of Supreme Court challenges to state-sponsored discrimination, including the landmark Brown v. Board decision in 1954, &lt;b&gt;President John F. Kennedy appointed Thurgood Marshall to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit&lt;/b&gt;. In this capacity, he wrote over 150 decisions including support for the rights of immigrants, limiting government intrusion in cases involving illegal search and seizure, double jeopardy, and right to privacy issues. Before his subsequent nomination to the United States Supreme Court in 1967, &lt;i&gt;Thurgood Marshall won 14 of the 19 cases he argued before the Supreme Court on behalf of the government&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;b&gt;Indeed, Thurgood Marshall represented and won more cases before the United States Supreme Court than any other American&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Until his retirement from the highest court in the land, &lt;b&gt;Justice Marshall &lt;a href="http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/122/hill/marshall.htm"&gt;established a record&lt;/a&gt; for supporting the voiceless American&lt;/b&gt;. Having honed his skills since the case against the University of Maryland, he developed a profound sensitivity to injustice by way of the crucible of racial discrimination in this country. As an Associate Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall leaves a legacy that expands that early sensitivity to include all of America's voiceless. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Justice Marshall died on January 24, 1993.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Julian Kenny Award for Natural Sciences&lt;/b&gt; - Professor Julian Stanley Kenny was an eminent zoologist, author and columnist. He taught for over 25 years at the UWI, St. Augustine and was highly regarded internationally for his extensive knowledge and seminal research on the ecology of Trinidad and Tobago.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Anthony Williams Award for Technological Innovation in Arts &amp;amp; Culture&lt;/b&gt; - Anthony Williams is an early steelpan innovator. He designed the pattern of the placement of the notes on the instrument; added wheels to the bass drums; improved the way pans were made; and initiated the first scientific study on the instrument by testing his ideas at CARIRI.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Frank Rampersad Award for Junior Scientist&lt;/b&gt; - NIHERST’s first president, Frank Rampersad, was a brilliant economist who supported indigenous research and development and human capacity building in fields of science and engineering that were critical to economic development.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Ranjit Kumar Award for Junior Engineer&lt;/b&gt; - Ranjit Kumar was a well-known legislator and civil engineer. He planned, designed and constructed the first dual carriageway in Trinidad and Tobago, known today as Wrightson Road, completed in 1940.&lt;/li&gt;

Two thoughts come to mind for me.  First, do we have any '&lt;i&gt;villagers&lt;/i&gt;' who are from Trinadad and Tobago.  Second, I wonder if the Miss Universe 1977, &lt;a href="http://www.pageant.com/universe/history/jc.html"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Penny Commissiong&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, will be involved in this award on any level? The movie focuses on the heroic Tuskegee Airmen and their performance as pilots in World War II. The movie is directed and produced by George Lucas with a cast that is virtually all-Black. My main reason for waiting is simple -- I like to save money whenever possible and Netflix or &lt;a href="http://electronicvillage.blogspot.com/2010/07/public-libraries-make-difference.html" target="_blank"&gt;the library&lt;/a&gt; are much less expensive then going to the movie theater.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;There are three reasons I'm not all-out 'ga-ga' about this film&lt;/b&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Give some credit to the 1995 television show&lt;/b&gt;!  George Lucas makes it seem that this is the first film on the topic.  I recall a great film called '&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114745/"&gt;The Tuskegee Airmen&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt;' with Laurence Fishbourne, Allen Payne, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Courtney Vance, Andre Braugher, Cuba Gooding Jr., Mekhi Phifer and others.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Terrance Howard is an asshole&lt;/b&gt;! The guy has some talent but he seems to always find a way to show disrespect with Black women ... whether it is his apparent &lt;a href="http://jezebel.com/287242/terrence-howard-thinks-women-are-unclean-and-dressed-like-whores"&gt;hatred for women&lt;/a&gt;, his &lt;a href="http://bossip.com/513058/that-bish-cray-terrence-howard-claimes-his-ex-wife-hates-black-people-and-threatened-to-have-russian-goons-murk-him-43081/"&gt;messy divorce&lt;/a&gt;, or his &lt;a href="http://theurbandaily.com/gossip-news/shamika-sanders/terrence-howard-moving-on-to-white-women/"&gt;recent trysts with white women&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;No worthy story lines for Black women!&lt;/b&gt; There is some merit in &lt;a href="http://www.whataboutourdaughters.com/waod/2012/1/13/um-so-why-am-i-supposed-to-go-see-red-tails-are-there-any-bl.html"&gt;recent blog post from Gina McCauley&lt;/a&gt; (&lt;i&gt;What About Our Daughters&lt;/i&gt;).&lt;/li&gt;

It is a sight seen by many immigrant families as they sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to come to the shores of the United States.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Few people know that the &lt;a href="http://www.blackladyliberty.com/"&gt;original Statue of Liberty was a Black Slave in shackles&lt;/a&gt;!&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Soulclap to Jamia Shephard and Dr. Angela Molette for bringing OURStory (not "his"-story) to our attention.  Dr. Molette points out that French Abolitionists (anti-slavery proponents and supporters of John Brown) were among the monument’s creators ... and this was the most compelling and overriding reason for creating the statue as a Black slave in shackles.  &lt;b&gt;The idea for the Statue of Liberty was born of a shared historical connection between Egypt (the original intended recipient of the Statue) and African slaves in America for whom the tribute to liberty and freedom was delivered.&lt;/b&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is worth noting that the final product delivered to America had significant changes that can be attributed to white privilege, arrogance, jealousy and financial pressure. &lt;/tbody&gt;&lt;/table&gt;&lt;b&gt;Edouard Rene LeFebvre DeLaboulaye, an internationally renowned lawyer and author of a three-volume history of the United States, first discussed the idea of a symbol to represent the end of U.S. Slavery at a dinner party in 1865, at his country home near Versailles, France&lt;/b&gt;. In attendance at the dinner party were many abolitionists including Victor Hugo and Frederick Auguste Bartholdi, who had initially been retained to create a sculptured bust of Mr. DeLaboulaye.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Victor Hugo and Edouard DeLaboulaye were leaders of the French Abolitionist movement. &lt;b&gt;They hated slavery and were in strong support of John Brown when he attempted to arm slaves in West Virginia for rebellion by raiding the armory at Harpers Ferry in 1859&lt;/b&gt;. After John Brown failed and was hanged, Hugo and DeLaboulaye took up a collection among the French people and presented a gold metal to John Brown’s widow.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States in 1861, the French liberals and abolitionists including Hugo, Bartholdi, and DeLaboulaye urged Lincoln to free the slaves even if Civil war resulted. Lincoln was told: “&lt;i&gt;You would become the first country in history to have fought a war against itself to free the internal slave and you would go down in history as a truly great country and a beacon of light to all freedom loving people&lt;/i&gt;.” &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The French abolitionists saw the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 as a worthless piece of paper since it only freed slaves in the Confederate controlled states where Lincoln had no jurisdiction and not in Union controlled states where Lincoln was still in authority. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When the war ended in 1865, French abolitionists were extremely happy and in addition to again urging Lincoln to free all slaves, &lt;b&gt;DeLaboulaye and Bartholdi requested permission to build and dedicate a monument of colossal statuary to that freeing of all slaves in America&lt;/b&gt;. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, DeLaboulaye again headed the abolitionists’ committee that presented a gold medal to Mrs. Lincoln, just as he had done for the widow of John Brown.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In addition to a staunch abolitionist, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) was an outstanding French sculptor. Bartholdi trained to be an architect in Alsace and Paris and then studied painting with Ary Scheffer and sculpture with J.F. Soitoux. &lt;b&gt;Bartholdi’s life and ideas changed dramatically after 1855 when he toured Egypt and witnessed the magnificent colossal monuments and statues created by the ancient Black Egyptians&lt;/b&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;b&gt;Bartholdi’s creation of a giant Black ex-slave female with broken chains at her feet and left hand was readily accepted in France&lt;/b&gt;. Although liberals, freemasons, and businessmen with American interests were the most enthusiastic supporters of the project, by 1881 some 100,000 people and 181 towns throughout France had contributed money.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In 1871, Frederic Bartholdi at the urging of DeLaboulaye undertook a voyage to America to sell his idea of a colossal statue clearly symbolizing the end of chattel slavery in the United States. He was armed with a large terracotta statue and numerous drawings to clearly illustrate his proposed Statue of Liberty. The original African face of the Statue of Liberty was published in The New York Post dated June 17, 1986 as part of the centennial celebration. &lt;b&gt;Bartholdi found little American support for his African slave model&lt;/b&gt;. In 1878, as the African head of Miss Liberty first went on display at the Universal Exposition in Paris, France, rampant reaction raged throughout the American South.&lt;br /&gt;

A tablet of law tucked into her folded arm that bears the date July 4, 1776, replaced the broken chains in the slave’s left hand. &lt;b&gt;Ironically, the chains were left at the feet but the meaning changed from broken American slavery to broken English tyranny.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On May 18, 1986 during the centennial celebration, The New York Times joined The New York Post in describing the original Statue of Liberty and the intention of DeLaboulaye and Bartholdi in presenting this statue to America. It’s unconscionable that the Encyclopedia Britannica and the official Statue of Liberty literature can still lie and say that this is a monument celebrating American Independence of 1776 or Franco-American alliance of 1778. Dr. Jack Felder sums it up clearly: &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;"&lt;i&gt;Once in place, Miss Liberty received a new meaning. She was hailed as the ‘Mother of White Exiles,’ greeting European immigrants seeking freedom in America. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;The movie follows a woman named Ruby who loses her husband to incarceration and loses herself in the process&lt;/b&gt;. Eventually, she becomes torn between two world - and two men - on the journey back to herself.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Ruby is played by newcomer &lt;b&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1538675/"&gt;Emayatzy Corinealdi&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt; with &lt;b&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1165044/"&gt;Omari Hardwick&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt; and &lt;b&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0654648/"&gt;David Oyelowo&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt; co-starring as the two men in her life.  I enjoyed watching Omari when he was prominent in the &lt;i&gt;Dark Blue&lt;/i&gt; television series.  I also enjoyed David when he was a principal in the BBC drama series, &lt;i&gt;MI-5&lt;/i&gt;.  I hope that they both get recognition for this move to the big screen.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Big props to &lt;b&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/avaduvernay"&gt;Ava DuVernay&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/b&gt;  She wrote and directed this film.  It is nice to see Black people no longer feel a need to complain about the lack of Black images in the movies ... instead they take the initiative to create their own projects that put our actors and actresses on the screen themselves! &lt;b&gt;&lt;a href="http://electronicvillage.blogspot.com/2008/12/kwanzaa-kujichagulia-self-determination.html" target="_blank"&gt;Kujichagulia&lt;/a&gt; in action&lt;/b&gt;!&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/tbody&gt;&lt;/table&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.slideshare.net/BDPAFoundation/bio-kelly-jones" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Kelly Jones&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt; began his career in the Air Force. He spent five years (1991-96) in the Far East as a fighter jet pilot. He also taught new pilots to fly F-16s and other jets.  Kelly served as a pilot for an international airline after leaving the Air Force.  A few years ago Kelly suffered a horrific collision that threw him from his motorcycle.  He suffered a compound fracture of his left leg and a severe injury to his arm.  He had several surgeries.  Kelly never complained ... even as he learned that his flying career was over.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;During his rehabilitation Kelly began to spend time on computerized race-car simulations&lt;/b&gt;.  He wasn't satisfied with the experience on a normal computer and began to build a more life-sized simulator.  His tinkering and imagination eventually led to the creation of a business, &lt;b&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX4VfgnlHFQ&amp;amp;feature=colike"&gt;Performance Cockpit&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt;.  &lt;b&gt;His idea has grown into a professional simulation experience for aviation and motorsports&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

Kelly moved his business to Indianapolis in order to be closer to a larger number of current and future race car driver.  Turns out that there is a gym that many of the Indy race car drivers use to stay in shape.  &lt;b&gt;Kelly put a couple of his simulators in the gym and began to offer hands-on workshops that used the simulators&lt;/b&gt;.  &lt;br /&gt;

Jim Dutton&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt; flew a Performance Cockpit Aviation Simulator as part of a VIP meet-and-greet evening at the &lt;a href="http://www.azchallenger.org/" target="_blank"&gt;Arizona Challenger Space Center&lt;/a&gt;.  &lt;i&gt;Astronaut Dutton remarked that he has flown numerous different simulators and the Performance Cockpits simulator realism and fidelity were among the best he had seen&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is truly wonderful to see Kuumba ('creativity) and Kujichagulia ('self-determination) in action!&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;I look forward to seeing where the creativity of Kelly's business will take him in the months and years to come&lt;/b&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;

Also it was only the second national holiday in the twentieth century (the other was Veterans Day, created as Armistice Day in 1926 to honor those who died in World War I). King is the only American besides George Washington to have a national holiday designated for his birthday (those of Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee and others are celebrated in some states but not nationwide).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Internationally, King is one of the few social leaders of any country to be honored with a holiday (Mahatma Gandhi's birthday is observed in India).&lt;br /&gt;

One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges. But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold, which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our White brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be s&lt;a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/R5K_lnN7SfI/AAAAAAAACbc/oxfvP9Pc1AQ/s1600-h/MartinLutherKing-3.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157395176196098546" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/R5K_lnN7SfI/AAAAAAAACbc/oxfvP9Pc1AQ/s320/MartinLutherKing-3.jpg" style="cursor: hand; float: left; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px;" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;atisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little Black boys and Black girls will be able to join hands with little White boys and White girls and walk together as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring."&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania! Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
From every mountainside, let freedom ring. When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! Free at last! Prior to his solo career, he had already been in the spotlight for many years as the lead vocalist of one of the most lyrical and distinctive of the Philadelphia soul groups, &lt;a href="http://electronicvillage.blogspot.com/2008/02/manic-monday-blue.html"&gt;Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes&lt;/a&gt;. In 1982, Pendergrass was in an automobile accident that left him a paraplegic. However, he was able to successfully resume his career until his retirement in 2006.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;The book asserts that First Lady Michelle Obama has forcefully imposed her will on White House aides and tries to portray her as "&lt;i&gt;some kind of angry Black woman&lt;/i&gt;."&lt;/b&gt;  This is a familiar meme for Mrs. Obama that began during the 2008 presidential campaign.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Lisa Alexander, mother of Neli Latson, was convicted earlier this week on misdemeanor charges that for many would have resulted in little to no jail time&lt;/b&gt;.  Not the case with Ms. Alexander.  She was sentenced to one year incarceration (later reduced to six months).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Lisa Alexander is an 11 year military veteran with no prior criminal history&lt;/b&gt;. She left the military to dedicate her life to her children and to especially build a stable life for her autistic son, Neli. &lt;b&gt;Neli was &lt;a href="http://www.avoiceforneli.com/"&gt;racially profiled, thrown in jail, and unjustly convicted&lt;/a&gt; in May 2010 at the hands of the same district attorney that prosecuted her. &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Lisa has been tirelessly advocating for Neli and the only constant throughout his terrifying ordeal has been his mother's voice by telephone each day and their weekly visits. She is her son's coping mechanism and is absolutely vital to him.&lt;br /&gt;

Lisa has been under such an extreme amount of stress over the past few years since Neli's arrest that she has suffered severe vision loss rendering her barely able to read. &lt;b&gt;Family and friends are greatly concerned for her health and well being.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Most consider that the initial joining of Africans and Native Americans &lt;a href="http://www.questia.com/googleScholar.qst?docId=5001897777" target="_blank"&gt;began in April 1502&lt;/a&gt;, when the first Africans kidnapped were brought to Hispanola to serve as slaves. Some escaped and somewhere inland on Santo Dominico life birthed the first circle of Black Indians.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Some Black Indians have a dual ancestry of African and Native American bloodlines. Others are Black people who have lived with Native Americans and maintain their cultural-ceremonial traditions. The seizure and mistreatment of Native Americans and their land, and the enslavement of Native Americans and Africans, were the two parallel institutions that resulted in the Black Indian culture.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Though neither white, Christian, nor European, together they created communities of permanence, that included people from overseas. The &lt;a href="http://siteground243.com/%7Ehiram155/2009/10/16/black-seminoles/" target="_blank"&gt;early history of these communities&lt;/a&gt; provides examples of two diverse people living together in peace. Exclusion from most written historical texts does not erase or deny the facts. Only the absence of true understanding of the relationships &lt;b&gt;red&lt;/b&gt; and Black peoples had, leaves unanswered questions for those groping to understand their family's past. &lt;div&gt;Many people believe racial and ethnic groups in North America have always lived as separately as they do now. However, segregation was neither practical nor preferable when people who were not native to this continent began arriving here. Europeans needed Indians as guides, trade partners and military allies. They needed Africans to tend their crops and to build an infrastructure.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Africans arrived on 'New World' shores with valuable assets for both European and Native Americans. They were used to agricultural labor and working in field gangs, something unknown to most Indians. As experts in tropical agriculture, Africans found much to share with Native Americans, and the two groups shared and combined knowledge about indigenous farming.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Americans found that Africans had 'Great Medicine' in their bodies. They were virtually immune to European diseases that decimated most native populations. This was also an &lt;a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/Rll4vSGV2cI/AAAAAAAAATg/WWelBj8vmCU/s1600-h/BlackIndians-3.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5069215609289824706" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/Rll4vSGV2cI/AAAAAAAAATg/WWelBj8vmCU/s400/BlackIndians-3.jpg" style="cursor: hand; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;encouragement for joining together, to create stronger, healthier children from the unions.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Their slave experience also qualified Africans as experts on whites - their motives, diplomacy, armaments, strengths, weaknesses, languages, defenses and plans. From a common foe, Africans and Native Americans found the first link of friendship and earliest motivation for an alliance.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;They discovered they shared some vital life views. Family was of basic importance to both, with children and the elderly treasured. Religion, a love and respect for 'Mother Life', and the sacred mystery behind life, was a daily part of cultural life.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;a href="http://colorq.org/MeltingPot/article.aspx?d=America&amp;amp;x=blackIndians" target="_blank"&gt;Both Africans and Native Americans&lt;/a&gt; found they shared a belief in cooperation, rather than competition and rivalry. Beyond individual human differences in personality, generally speaking, each race was proud, but neither was weighed down by prejudice. Skill, friendship and trust, not skin color or race was important.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;That Native Americans and Africans merged by choice, invitation, and bonds of trust and friendship, cannot be understated. It explains why families who share this biracial inheritance have never forgotten these family ties.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Since 1502, Black Indians have been reported, documented, painted, and photographed coast to coast from Hudson's Bay to Tierra del Fuego. In the decades between the 1619 Jamestown settlement and the 'Great Treaty Signings' of the 1880's, Black Indian Societies were reported in more than 15 states from New York to South Carolina as well as the thirty Caribbean Islands 'blessed' by European colonization.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;It was around the 1740's that British colonists in the southern colonies, introduced the practice of slavery among neighboring Native Americans. When more than 60,000 Native Americans were removed from their homes during the 1830s by U.S. Federal troops from the southeastern states of the United States - they were forced Westward to Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. This was called the "Trail of Tears".&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Many of these Native American tribes had previously embraced and either helped or kept numerous African Americans as slaves. &lt;a href="http://blackindians.homestead.com/" target="_blank"&gt;African Americans and Native Americans&lt;/a&gt; created a mixed cultural blend depending upon the specific tribal group.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Later, as the new American government began to thrive, laws were drafted to protect the land and property the colonists had acquired. These laws strengthened the powers of slave owners, limited the rights of free Africans and barred most Indian rights altogether. Today, Black, white and red Americans still feel the aftershock of those laws.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;In order to enforce the new laws, Indians and Africans had to be distinguished from Europeans. Government census takers began visiting Indian communities east of the Mississippi River in th&lt;a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/Rll4OCGV2bI/AAAAAAAAATY/_dvj0k0W7GE/s1600-h/BlackIndian-2.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5069215038059174322" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/Rll4OCGV2bI/AAAAAAAAATY/_dvj0k0W7GE/s320/BlackIndian-2.jpg" style="cursor: hand; float: left; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px;" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;e late 1700s and continued their task of identifying, categorizing, and counting individuals and "tribes" well into the 20th century. In the earlier days of this process, Native American communities that were found to be harboring escaped African slaves were threatened with loss of their tribal status, thereby nullifying their treaties with the U.S. government and relinquishing all claims to their land.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Despite the restrictions imposed by the U.S. government, Indians and Africans still managed to form close bonds. Some Native American communities ignored the laws and continued to aid fleeing African slaves. Some free Africans aided displaced Indians. Sometimes the two groups came together in "prayer towns" -- European communities that welcomed and protected converts to Christianity, regardless of race. Sometimes, Indian women married African men when the number of men in their own communities was decimated by war or natural disaster.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Some Native Americans listed themselves as "Negro" or "mixed" in order to retain ownership of their land.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Some Native Americans refused to sign the census rolls during the 18th and 19th centuries, some refused to register with the Bureau of Indian Affairs or to allow themselves to be "removed" to "Indian Territory" in Oklahoma during the 1800s. As a result, many of their descendants grew up in urban environments instead of on reservations. Others, such as the &lt;a href="http://www.buffalosoldier.net/SeminoleNegroIndianScouts.htm" target="_blank"&gt;Seminole-Negro Indian Scouts&lt;/a&gt; formed some of the toughest units in the United States Army. This isn't the image of Native American experience most people carry in their heads but, in this part of the country, it is quite prevalent.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;There are some who hold the mistaken belief that one must look, act and speak in particular ways, to be recognized as being part of a particular cultural heritage. During the past 400 years, slavery, oppression and racism have served &lt;a href="http://www.african-nativeamerican.com/" target="_blank"&gt;African American Indians&lt;/a&gt; like wind upo&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/Rll2TyGV2ZI/AAAAAAAAATI/Bf4k1G0CWUY/s1600-h/BlackIndians-cover.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5069212937820166546" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/Rll2TyGV2ZI/AAAAAAAAATI/Bf4k1G0CWUY/s320/BlackIndians-cover.jpg" style="cursor: hand; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;n the desert corn, they have caused the roots of our culture to grow deeper, in places where experts would say it is impossible for plants to grow.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
African Americans suffered grievously under lynch law. With the close of Reconstruction in the late 1870s, southern whites were determined to end northern and Black participation in the region's affairs, and northerners exhibited a growing indifference toward the civil ri&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/RlEOWyGV2NI/AAAAAAAAARk/OKtcpXjLgxM/s1600-h/lynched-4.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5066846840336799954" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/RlEOWyGV2NI/AAAAAAAAARk/OKtcpXjLgxM/s200/lynched-4.jpg" style="cursor: hand; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;ghts of Black Americans. Taking its cue from this intersectional white harmony, the federal government abandoned its oversight of constitutional protections. Southern and border states responded with the Jim Crow laws of the 1890s, and white mobs flourished.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
With Blacks barred from voting, public office, and jury service, officials felt no obligation to respect minority interests or safeguard minority lives. In addition to lynchings of individuals, dozens of race riots--with Blacks as victims--scarred the national landscape from Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1898 to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1921.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Between 1882 (when reliable statistics were first collected) and 1968 (when the classic forms of lynching had disappeared), 4,743 persons died of lynching, 3,446 of the&lt;a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/RlEOqCGV2PI/AAAAAAAAAR0/7wnYvkO7690/s1600-h/lynched-3.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5066847171049281778" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DmtdGP6kzMQ/RlEOqCGV2PI/AAAAAAAAAR0/7wnYvkO7690/s200/lynched-3.jpg" style="cursor: hand; float: left; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px;" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;m Black men and women. Mississippi (539 Black victims, 42 white) led this grim parade of death, followed by Georgia (492, 39), Texas (352, 141), Louisiana (335, 56), and Alabama (299, 48). From 1882 to 1901, the annual number nationally usually exceeded 100; 1892 had a record 230 deaths (161 Black, 69 white).&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Although lynchings declined somewhat in the twentieth century, there were still 97 in 1908 (89 Black, 8 white), 83 in the racially troubled postwar year of 1919 (76, 7, plus some 25 race riots), 30 in 1926 (23, 7), and 28 in 1933 (24, 4). Sadly, we still see signs that &lt;a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-elf2u1mmay20,0,5086697.story" target="_blank"&gt;racial demons can reared their head&lt;/a&gt; in 2007.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Statistics do not tell the entire story&lt;/b&gt;. These were recorded lynchings; others were never reported beyond the community involved. Furthermore, mobs used especially sadistic tactics when Blacks were the prime targets. &lt;b&gt;By the 1890s lynchers increasingly employed burning, torture, and dismemberment to prolong suffering and excite a "festive atmosphere" among the killers and onlookers.&lt;/b&gt; &lt;i&gt;&lt;a href="http://withoutsanctuary.org/pics_51.html" target="_blank"&gt;White families brought small children to watch&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt;, newspapers sometimes carried advance notices, railroad agents sold excursion tickets to announced lynching sites, and mobs cut off Black victims' fingers, toes, ears, or genitalia as souvenirs.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Nor was it necessarily the handiwork of a local rabble; not infrequently, the mob was encouraged or led by people prominent in the area's political and business circles. &lt;b&gt;Lynching had become a ritual of interracial social control and recreation rather than simply a punishment for crime. &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Recently lynching has come to have a contemporary informal use as a label for social vilification, particularly in the media, and particularly of African Americans. However, I recall that even the &lt;a href="http://mediamatters.org/items/200704160004" target="_blank"&gt;Don Imus situation&lt;/a&gt; resulted in headlines using the word 'lynching'.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Located in the Ginza area of Tokyo, the Nagakin Capsule Tower, was originally designed as a Capsule Hotel to provide economical housing for businessmen working late in central Tokyo during the week.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The 14-story high Tower has 140 capsules stacked at angles around a central core. Kurokawa developed the technology to install the capsule units into the concrete core with only 4 high-tension bolts, as well as making the units detachable and replaceable.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Kurokawa's design theory was to replace the capsules when needed but the building has not been maintained in 33 years which has caused drainage and water pipes to be damaged.&lt;br /&gt;
