EA stands up to critics of lesbian and gay content

EA has reportedly received "several thousand" letters and emails condemning the inclusion of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) content in its games, but the company says its development strategy won't be influenced by bigotry.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, plenty of small-minded types have been directing messages to EA's executive team and creative heads threatening to boycott the publisher's games if it doesn't remove same-sex relationship content.

Some of these critics claim EA has been pressurised by LGBT groups to include homosexual content in its titles, which they say is being forced on children, while others complain that EA has been deleting anti-LGBT posts on its official forums.

Jeff Brown, VP of corporate communications at EA, told GI: "Every one of EA's games includes ESRB content descriptors so it's hard to believe anyone is surprised by the content. This isn't about protecting children, it's about political harassment.

"EA has not been pressured by any groups to include LGBT characters in our games," he added. "However, we have met with LBGT groups and sponsored industry forums to discuss content and harassment of players in online forums. In short, we do put options for same-sex relationships in our games; we don't tolerate hate speech on our forums."

We think the inclusion of LGBT content in its titles has shown EA to be something of a progressive game maker, and its admirable defence of its viewpoint isn't one you'd traditionally associate with a firm recently named 'the worst company in America'.

EA after the company almost went tits up during late 90's , seemed to have turned a corner, with a positive attitude towards developing ip's and a caring approach to consumers, they were one of first to start putting out decent ps3 ports of games for example, but it was alas just a ruse, and theyve promptly gone back to their former evil status. I cant help but worry about next gen with publishers being as they are.

It's always going to draw touchy feedback really. I don't think EA have handled it well though. There's obviously a pile of default morons going to be bitching about all sorts but some of the complaints are self-made. . Despite being your supposed hardcore, together, combat pilot, he's bawling his eyes out within 5 hours of the game start. If that's not another stereotyping own goal I don't know what is.
. If you treat Steve with respect, like "no worries dude, you'll pull through this man" it gets worse to my mind, clunkier. He eventually invites you to meet him for a drink on the Citadel for a chat, some down time to help him clear his head basically. However, that chat quickly narrows to 3 options:

- I only came here watch the strippers
- I'm gay, let's sex
- f**k off

Super mature that. Where's the "I came here to help you iron out some creases", friend to friend chat, shoulder to lean on option? That WAS the purpose of the visit.

It's one extreme or the other at the moment, thats the problem to my mind. Mid ground is trampled on and time is wasted on poorly executed attempts at political correctness (which is often seen as appeasing a minoirty at the expenxe of a majority). If they actually want to add that content, go ahead! But do it right! And try not to look so biased on your own forums.

That is one thing that I applaud EA for doing!!! LGBT relationships are part of life and should not be ignored. We have an age rating on games for a reason and Children should not be exposed to sexual content - if they are then it is the parents fault for buying them games that are NOT rated for them to play!!

It also exposes the Bigotry and Hate that still remains within the human population but if they were on the receiving end I am sure they would be campaigning for tolerance, equal rights and respect!!!

I am also glad that EA refuse to budge on this and maybe with more exposure, people will become more accepting of people and their choices (although I am sure a lot did not choose to be the way they are it just happens to be that way and they certainly do NOT deserve to be disrespected and/or hated) and hopefully end up a more tolerant and respectful society.

Imagine if they said there should be no (insert colour of skin) in a game - they would be branded racist and certainly wouldn't be able to get away with saying that!!

I mean, when I tried to pull Traynor and was shot down I thought it was done quite well, and tongue in cheek enough for it to be quite humourous. But having not got tried the gay romance option, it might be too tongue in cheek and the humour might be insulting, as they aren't taking it seriously?

Otherwise, why complain? Could be EA smoothing over the worlds worst company award.

And @Imaduck, You make some valid points, especially with the same sex romances in mass effect feel incredibly hamfisted. Hopefully more companies will adopt LGBT relationships in the future, but in a much better way.

lets be honest, it's rare that any form of human interaction is done well in video games lol

They're obviously referring to DA2 and ME3. My first character in both was male. In DA2, Anders tried to flirt with me in our first conversation, I gave a pretty clear "not interested" response and it was never mentioned again. In ME3, I saw even less. I'm not actually sure which character is the gay romance option although I've got an idea about three possibilities. One died in my previous save game, one mentioned he had a husband who died so he is gay - but never came on to my Shepard, the other rarely even spoke to me about any subject.

So in other words, you've got to actively be seeking this content out in order to see it.

Dragon Age is rated 18, Mass Effect 2 and 3 are both rated 15. There is only Mass Effect that I can think of that's a 12. These types of games are not aimed at children and more to the point same-sex relationships are a fact of life so including them in any type of media is acceptable.

I don't think it's something you need to keep children away from seeing least of all in a video game. I have no doubt in my mind that most kids will see same-sex relationships everyday when walking down the street or whatever. It's better they accept that it's a fact of life at a younger age than growing up been wrapped in cotton wool.

When you read that letter it looks like a fairly sensible person who is just looking out for the children so they're not exposed to adult theme's too early. Maybe not the opinion of the rest of us, especially since the the game has a 16+ age rating and any teenager has already been exposed to homosexual content through TV, films and probably their everyday life. Then they just went and made an arse of it by writing in pen, when the rest of the letter is printed, "REMEMBER SODOM" on it. Well done!

The Ghost Recon: Future Soldier multiplayer beta will run from April 19 until May 2 on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Mill map It'll allow up to 12 simultaneous players to choose from three classes (Rifleman, Engineer and Scout) and play two modes across two maps, Pipeline and Mill (see screens).

Conflict:Players battle to complete objectives located throughout the map and earn points, the team with the most points at the end of the round wins. Game session: one round of 15 minutes.Saboteur (available starting April 26th):A bomb spawns in a central location, both teams compete to retrieve the bomb and be the first to detonate it at the opposing team's base. Game session: one round of ten minutes.

The beta can be accessed in the following ways:

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction owners. Splinter Cell Conviction Xbox 360 owners can access the beta directly through the gamePre-order Ghost Recon: Future Soldier on Xbox 360 and receive a Xbox 360 beta key.Also, look out for additional key giveaways online

Ubisoft has also announced Ghost Recon Network, which is described as a free companion service that will support all future Ghost Recon titles. Available on PC, smartphones and tablets, the Ghost Recon Network site and version one of the iOS and Android apps will launch with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier on Xbox 360 and PS3 on May 25. Beta players will get an early chance to try out some of the features on the Ghost Recon Network website and Android mobile app, both of which are in beta.

I tried the 360 version of this at last years Eurogamer Expo. I loved ghost Recon and ghost Recon 2 but when i tried this one the controls felt really fiddly and not like the first 2 instalments. Hopefully it was due to the early build code.

Rockstar has sent over a new Max Payne 3 trailer showing off the game's uncompromising shotguns in action.

The publisher says "these close-quarters specialists are just as great to make a noisy entrance as they are at dropping bad guys with their ferocious heavy rounds."

Last week Rockstar released a trailer giving us the first tour of the game's multiplayer modes, which cleverly manage to work in the series' signature bullet-time mechanic.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game launch on May 15 in North America and May 18 internationally, while the PC one's out on May 29 in the US and June 1 everywhere else.

No offence but a bit of a lame trailer. I'm never really into weapon trailers because it gives you very little info about a game. Yes you know what guns are included but you don't know how they play/feel and whether or not they are balanced. I'd much prefer more MP details : gamemodes, maps etc. Or maybe actual mission gameplay.

This year's E3 expo, set to take place in Los Angeles between June 5 and 7, is less than two months away.

2012's event promises to include a seriously strong line-up of games, plus of course the lure of new hardware - definitely from Nintendo, but perhaps not from Sony and Microsoft.

But there's no reason for us to deal in facts, is there? With the long Bank Holiday weekend stretched in front of our lucky UK readers, we thought it'd be the perfect time to open up the floor and hear your E3 reveal wish lists.

Nintendo needs to wake up and release games, more so for the 3DS. Wave Race 64 for the 3DS would do it for me, but can't see it, as all they're good for is Mario and Zelda games.

I can't help but agree with ThatLostNoob94, I really hope that the Wii U blows everyone away, if only to shut people up when it comes to talking about its power and how much of a "gimmick" the controller is. 360-degree detective mode in Arkham City would be f**king ace! But to see what Nintendo have done with it from purely a gameplay perspective is mouthwatering, regardless of the machines' grunt.

As for what games I would like to see, Half-Life 2: Episode 3/Half-Life 3 is the obvious candidate, seeing as it has been nearly 5 years. The Last Of Us and The Last Guardian are my silver and bronze medallists. Cannot wait.

Nintendo to lift the lid on Wii U and end all this hate. Not on CVG. On other sites. The specs might disappoint but whenever a system is revealed the company hypes it on whats the main point of the system. E3 2005 Sony hyped up PS3 on graphics. Last years E3 Nintendo tried to demonstrate the controller and it all fell flat. With stuff like that its better to let the user see for themselves and just show the games. The sceptics will come around when the lineup is shown. If only Nintendo wasn't so dang quiet.

I'd like to see Respawns new title, along with bungies one. Some GTAV info - max payne will have been released so it's all about GTAV after that.

That and a new Bioware game, probably Dragon Age 3, or even ME3/DA2 dlc will suffice. They'll have a lot to live up to after upsetting other fans with ME3, and Da2, though I personally liked them both.

Think you'll get the Xbox handheld before the end of the year. Except it won't be quite what you hope for. It'll be Live running on Windows 8 tablets, which will almost certainly have some cross functionality with the next xbox. I can see MS making a big deal of Windows 8 tablet gaming at E3, they need to have something to target at the iPad and if it has 360 or next gen connectivity it'll be something to lessen the Wii U's impact.

- The rumored PlayStation brawler looks interesting and should hopefully get an announcement and / or trailer.
- Gameplay of The Last of Us or The Last Guardian (Do the double "last" titles mean the PS3 is reaching the end of it's life cycle? :O )

- More Vita titles, most known unreleased Vita titles are set to release within the next few months so it makes sense to announce more now. We haven't heard much on the huge franchises such as Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed that were confirmed to be on the Vita.

- Something (perhaps not a game) for Vita. An app or other to interest Vita owners.

Nintendo:

- The potential re branding and entirely new console of the Wii U. Something definite considering it'll probably release within this year.

- A killer app. Eg: A Mario, Zelda, Metroid or a neglected franchise that'll appeal to Nintendo audiences.
- New IPs. As much as we love them Nintendo (Unlike Sony and Microsoft) rarely publishes any new franchise. Something creative, fresh and interesting would be wonderful.
- Something fans want for the 3DS. Whether that be the petitioned Majora's Mask 3D, A new Pokemon Snap, or another franchise that hasn't received a lot of love in the past few years; something to excite fans for new 3DS games.
- Super Smash Bros Wii U / 3DS. Although incredibly unlikely considering that Sakurai only recently finished Kid Icarus: Uprising, a trailer or mere proper announcement would be great.

Microsoft:

- Gameplay of Halo 4. A definite seeing as fans are feeling a bit hesitant about the game, some gameplay could help ease those concerns.
- Hyping up a new console. With the 360 having a grand total of three upcoming "big" titles (Halo 4 , Fable: The Journey and a new Forza game) it's clear the 360 is on the way out. Giving us an idea of what to expect would be useful. Not a full console announcement, just a small something.
- Less emphasis on Kinect. We're all proud of how well the Kinect sold but you don't need to dedicate most of your press conference to actors looking silly on stage.

Other:

- If Valve are planning to do a big announcement oftheir next "three-quel" now would be a cool time. What ever it is will be done so masterfully like they did with the Portal 2 on PS3 announcement.
- What ever Kojima has been working on (It was for Vita wasn't it?)
- More Assassin's Creed 3 gameplay. A walkthrough of a level like what they did with 2 might be nice.
- Doubtful but whatever Gearbox is planning with Duke Nukem. Something original made entirely by Gearbox without being shacked down by the original Dev's ideas will be grand.
- And finally, maybe something on a new Sonic title or Sonic 4 Episode 2?

The Vita games have dried up quite a bit recently, the next one/two coming out to interest me is two games i have had for years, but i still love every second of, MGS HD Collection. MGS3 on the go will be a thing of beauty. Hopefully they get the controls working well

I would like to see a new developer revealed for the game Aliens: Colonial Marines. A developer who cares about the franchise, about making the game, and wants to get it out there for gamers to play. That's what I'd like to see.

What I expect to see (non-Alien related) is a bunch of people, too full of themselves to accept the lack of quality and imagination from their industry bleat on about their next game; probably suggesting it's the best thing they've ever made, and has enahanced... whatever (graphics, AI, features, blah, blah, blah)!

I've wanted a blade game for years.It could be awesome, I always pictured it as a hack and slash but I dunno if it could stand up against Dante and Bayonetta. There was a rumour posted on cvg a few weeks ago about Rocksteady making a TMNT game. Now that I would get excited for.

Also I really want to see what Platinum Games has in store. I like the fact they focus on original IP, but I'd love a sequel to Vanquish. Vanquish is massively underrated, and whilst it was a fun game, I don't think it completely lived up to its potential. Was far too short. Give me 15-20 hours more and I'll be a happy chappy. I've got a feeling they're working on Bayonetta 2, and whilst I'd welcome it (Bayonetta is an incredible action game) my heart of hearts tells me they can't better the original, so I kinda think, 'why bother?'.

Yes it's good to have all the new apps and stuff but I kind of miss gaming at the moment. Kinect has so much potential and it's obvious right now that kinect was released on this platform to iron out bugs and to see what peoples trends on it are so the next Xbox/kinect that's released will be targeted to the correct group of people.

First off, why has no-one mentioned the limelight of the WIIU and 3DS announcements? LEGO CITY STORIES was just thrown out there, into the blue, with only six pictures confirming its existence. Yes, LEGO BATMAN 2 is the latest TTGAMES project, but whatever happens in that game will set the benchmark for CITY STORIES. Open world gameplay. Talking characters. And more. A whole heap of info on both games would be nice, but more for CITY STORIES since nothing has been revealed since last E3. TWELVE MONTHS WORK ALREADY!

Now I saw some comments on it, so say it I will. Having played the previous two on PC and the second on the PS2, I would like STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT 3 to finally be revealed, hopefully with a big massive trailer that says - "Look at me. Here I am. I will explode onto your machines soon." With only two PSP games and a useless DS game of BATTLEFRONT, it is finally time for the console version to come to the forefront, having collated all the best from all the BATTLEFRONT's released. PC version is a definite, with a PS3/4, XBOX360/720 also a definite. A WIIU version might be plausible, but definitely not on any handhelds .

Another big game to have more info on would be GTA5. This I would love to have. With just little few details on it, and one trailer that is careful with what it announced, a big blowout of info would be grand. Story, console releases, cars, gameplay modes, online functionality. The list goes on with what could be announced for this.

Back to NINTENDO and the WIIU. For me to buy it, and I'm sure a lot of people would want this, is way more MII playability. And the best way to do this? WUHU ISLAND of course. Recreate the entire island, and make it all accessible. Even inside buildings. Have us sailing in boats, flying in paragliders and planes, or just go on a grand walk. Play in any sports, all from WII SPORTS/RESORT, and to top it all off make it an online multiplayer hub, with your own house elsewhere with items you can trade with other people. ANIMAL CROSSING might become less popular with this but at least we get more to do. And to sweeten the deal, why not include ANIMAL CROSSING cameos. K.K. SLIDER, for example. Or TOM NOOK with a shopping mall.

Talking of ANIMAL CROSSING, why not more info and a release date for the 3DS version? We know some info, and some guesses hint at other features, but more concrete info about it would be great. And of course POKEMON BLACK AND WHITE 2, a full info blowout scaling the tallest peak of EUROPE. Other NINTENDO games would be good too, as well as a new IP which was rumoured to be in the works.

Onto the PSV, GRAN TURISMO PSP remastered for the PSV. POLYPHONY DIGITAL should really see sense in this, beings as they never release a new GRAN TURISMO game after the first few years of a consoles life. However, if this year they could surprise us with a PSV version, that would be great news, and would tie in well with the PSV's empty release period. Also, more info on DOCTOR WHO: THE ETERNITY CLOCK, as I would like to see if it is worth buying.

Last of all, solid info on the next KINGDOM HEARTS game. The 3DS version needs a release date for EUROPE, but we know all about that one now. I'm talking about the final frontier of KH. The final chapter of a series that needs to stop drooling in backstories.

It's nearly Easter! You know, the time where it's completely OK to gorge on cr�me eggs till your blood turns to chocolate, your eyes start secreting fondant filling and you keel over and collapse as a result of your euphoric chocolate eating frenzy.

Easter Eggs aren't just chocolaty treats though. In games, they take different shapes. They could be a hidden reference to another game, a different developer or something else entirely unexpected.

Gaming Easter Eggs gift you with a brief moment of discovery as you piece the connection together. A spark occurs, and your smile spreads from ear to ear. "I know what this means!" you cry inside your own little head, feeling like the cleverest person in the world, but not wanting to outwardly express your joy for fear of seeming odd. Then, just like that, you're back in the game, shooting stuff, driving cars or slashing monsters.

Here's a brief list of some of our favourite video game Easter Eggs to keep your curious brains ticking across the holiday weekend. Obviously, there's hundreds of classic video games crammed with Easter Eggs, but they're all well catalogued, so we've decided to pick a few from recent games.

We're sure you've got hundreds to share with us, too, so leave them in the comments below for your fellow readers...

DEAD SPACE

Warning: Spoilers ahead

Dead Space mostly had us soiling our pants, but did you ever notice the connection between chapter names?

An observant eye would've noticed that the first letter of each chapter spells out a rather ominous message: NICOLEISDEAD.

Of course, had you noticed that then you would have spoiled the game for yourself. Nicole was protagonist Isaac's beloved girlfriend, who - for the majority of Dead Space - you were led to believe was alive. That is until the game did a psychedelic twisting flip on you and revealed your gorgeous sweetheart had been dead the whole time; she topped herself before the events of the game had even started. Gutted, right?!

PAPADECEASED might work in France. It'd amuse some bilingual people working at Renault, anyway.

Devs want Xbox 720, PS4 to be 'more open development platforms'

A number of developers have expressed hope that Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4, or whatever Microsoft's and Sony's next generation consoles are called, will be more open development platforms than their predecessors.

While PC games can largely be updated on the fly relatively inexpensively to offer new content or fixes, making changes to console titles often requires cutting through a lot of red tape. Ultimately, the argument goes, these issues can affect the quality of the game and console owners get a rough deal.

"It's sometimes expensive, there's an awful lot of bureaucracy, even when you want to do quite small things," David Polfeldt of Ubisoft Massive, the studio behind Far Cry 3's multiplayer component, told Gamasutra.

"If I agree with [a suggested fix], I start to think 'Oh yeah, to change that I would have to -- oh shit, it's just too much work.' And I won't change it even if I think [the feedback] is right."

Crytek's global business development director Carl Jones agreed: "I think that'd be really helpful [if the consoles were more open], because certainly we're seeing a change in models in games toward more freemium content, and a quicker response to your community.

"We're always going to need quality control," he added. "We're going to need a decent submission process, to get the first version of a game out, and make sure it's solid and everyone gets a good experience. But during that period, if developers can be generating content that they know they can shoot out really quickly, on demand, well, I think the tail of that game becomes longer, the overall revenue from that game becomes higher, and everybody wins."

Capcom senior vice president Christian Svensson commented: "I'm hoping for a much more fluid means of providing updates to consumers, being able to have a much more rapid turnaround in between when content is submitted and when content goes live to consumers, to provide a higher level of service to them.

"I'm hoping that the networking and the processes in the future are built with that in mind. I'd like to see more server-based backends that are more under publisher-developer control, rather than being forced through systems that are bit more pre-defined by the first-party. That would enable experiences online that are not currently available in today's console marketplace."

PS4 and Xbox 720 are rumoured to be in line for release next year, and both are said to feature inbuilt anti-used games measures.

Microsoft's most recent comment on Xbox 360's as-yet-unannounced successor is that "there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon".

Asked last month about Sony's plans for new home console hardware, US PlayStation boss Jack Tretton played down the chances of the company launching PS4 any time soon.

If you're that sick of the 'red tape', here's a thought: how about you concentrate on creating games that work properly upon release so that you don't have to patch them later, thereby avoiding the red tape involved in getting patches approved.

The online aspect introduced with this generation of consoles is becoming more of a curse than a blessing; as well as virtually killing local multiplayer, far too many developers and publishers are adopting the 'release now, patch later' philosophy.

Actually its more release now, say well patch latter, then when the customer has already bought it walk away laughing. Since there are basically no consumer protection laws because its "merely a game" they can get away with virtual theft. Instead of less red tape, we need more legal protections!

O.o Are you joking? The problem is patching something on consoles is not easy or cheap. And for bethesda games, there are going to be bugs, you just have to deal with that. Yes bethesda may drop the ball but no matter what for a game like skyrim it was going to be filled with bugs. If you want big games, expect bugs. Oh and just because they catch bugs doesn't mean they will be in time for release, deadlines and whatnot so i wouldn't recommend you blame developers. And sometimes it's not even bugs it's just fan feedback, even games that work well on release can still have things that need to be fixed. Games are software as well as media.

Think about how much more awesome it would be if publishers could release awesome MAP PACKS..... one map at a time. They could vomit out a map, weapon, or other piece of downloadable content, every other week. Conditioning their player-based into steady, impulse-puchasing, steams of revenue. With enough "freeedom", they could effectively steer their customers into obsessing over pay-to-win-style content systems.

I feel insane. Here's a secret, you could spend a millions of dollars on quality assurance for skyrim, AND THERE WOULD STILL BE BUGS. Even if a team of testers rarely find bugs, a lot are going to be found when MILLIONS PLAY THE GAME. I understand that bugs are terrible, but what game has more content and scope than skyrim? I'm sure they could release an elder scrolls with much less bugs if it was a corridor hack and slash. And ps3's poorly designed blahblahblah. Also developers DO want this, because patching on consoles is expensive and apparently not very easy. Which is why pc's are mmo friendly, and why tf2 is possible, and it's why dust 514 is not on xbox. Developers want a more open platform as well.

It's like every developer in the last 3 years have forgotten all about proper QA. You can argue their side all day long, its not my problem to feel sorry for them. I don't care 1 bit about how much costs are for their uncontrolled budgets or how hard something is. I'm a customer so why would it be in my interest to take it up the arse?

I'm not blaming Developers here, its the greedy fat c**ts Publishers that are destroying the whole industry. It's all about mugging consumers today Only games that sell in the millions will even be patched anyway.

In my opinion, there needs to be MORE red tape. When a game is released it should be in its complete form, fully checked for bugs and a solid piece of software. But since the patch/update culture emerged, thank you Mr. internet, games have become incomplete bugfests that developers can't be bothered to finish during the development cycle. So they try to cover up their laziness with patches and updates. I say, penalize them for their laziness. Make them finish their games properly, like the good old days, and then release them. And if they want to try and fix their mistakes through the internet, make it bloody hard for them to do so. Yes, this is just my opinion, but when every game I buy for my PS3 needs at least one update each, it makes me realize that developers just aren't releasing the finished product any more. And don't even get me started on Gran Turismo 5.

If their games are too complex to ensure a high standard of quality, then they should make them simpler until they find a way to ensure that that high quality can be met. They chose to make it a complex game so the fault sits with them.

But publishers are also to blame in all this for pushing very tight deadlines on developers and stressing them out. In the creative industries it is happy, healthy workers that produce the finest products.

I agree but don't tar everyone with the same brush, there are still many developers that take pride in releasing games that work properly (Naughty Dog, Valve, Nintendo, Rockstar to name a few high profile ones).

But I agree on Bethesda, that was all of their own making, they named a release date they couldn't make, they didn't test Skyrim PS3 to the extent they should've, they released it in that state then to top it all off they didn't send out PS3 review code in the hopes that no-one would find out, that is not on.

Fr33kye: You're out of line on this one. No one cares about a floating mammoth bug, it's immersion breaking, it's a minor annoyance but it's not game breaking, 'Rimlag' was and still we be for those not on the internet.

For the record i dont think the developer handled the QA for new vegas. I think that's usually the publishers job, they sometimes hire third parties to do it. I'm just saying that games are a technical product as well as media and if we want them bigger and better and more open with more choices then expect bugs.

Only games that sell in the millions will even be patched? Isn't that a good reason consumers should want lower costs for patching? Because for games that dont sell incredibly well patching may not even be worth it in the eyes of the devs/publishers. So maybe we should care that patching is expensive, because it affects us as well.

Do people realize that if games take MORE time in development that means they have to sell more? Is that a good thing with struggling sales already? Do you know why enslaved didn't bankrupt ninja theory? Because they spent half the time they spent on heavenly sword. The game might actually have a future rather than another closed developer. Although i dont think ninja theory or that big and i doubt they would be bankrupt if this were the case but my point still stands! There are a lot of f**king problems in the industry and limiting developers isn't going to solve them. It's just going to cause more bugs and more deaths.

Not at all. If it becomes easier and cheaper all that it will do is encourage much more laziness and a bigger step up in the 'take money now, fix maybe later' attitude most publishers have taken on. I say they should be forced to finish their games or be severely punished.

Alright i'm going to try to explain this to you. Quality assurance, is a different team. Dlc is likely done by people who would otherwise be doing nothing. Even if problems are found, they might not have time. If they take more time, they need more money. Who is that f**king stupid to believe that developers consciously choose not to fix bugs?

Do you really believe that platform holders are the only thing preventing developers from breaking their games? Are they that incompetent? If you believe a developer is that incompetent then dont buy their games.

Red tape is the reason dust 514 is on ps3 and not xbox. It's the reason many games aren't on wiiware. So what happens when publishers aren't seeing enough return and consoles are seen as archaic and not the "hot" platform? They move to browser, social, casual and mobile games. Then suddenly big console titles aren't anywhere near as attractive, a business model that doesn't work and red tape that doesn't allow for it to change, what do you think is going to happen? If there is more red tape they are going to play it even safer than before and the only games that get patched are going to be sequels that sell well into the millions. And even when they do patches WILL TAKE EVEN LONGER, if they come at all.

After a turbulent few weeks GAME's future is finally a little more stable.

Although it had its initial bid rejected by lenders, Comet owner OpCapita's fresh bid to acquire the 333 GAME stores looks to have been accepted, earlier today it confirmed it's to buy a large portion of the troubled retailer. According to multiple press reports a consortium of banks led by Royal Bank of Scotland, which is owed £85m, have approved the takeover, which will save 333 stores and 3,100 jobs.

The investment group has an uphill struggle to return the retailer to full strength, and you can be sure competitors aren't going to make it easy. Tesco has already started to capitalise on the absence of a dedicated video game retailer, its latest print ad campaign positions the supermarket as "the home of gaming" and boasts "the largest number of gaming stores in the UK".

PwC, GAME's administrator, said the retailer's demise was largely a result of having too many stores positioned too close together, and also because it expanded overseas too quickly. Opcapita will no doubt be mindful not to make the same mistakes again, but it is also in an excellent position to address some of the retailer's more irksome practises.

Obviously the main sticking points that will require immediate attention is the disparity of prices between GAME and its competitors. Although it might unrealistic to assert it should be competitive with online rivals, it should at the very least stay on par with outlets such as HMV, which almost always undercut GAME on software launch prices. It's trade-in model could also do with an overhaul, otherwise gamers will likely head to alternatives such as CeX, or sell their games online.

As consumers you're in the best position to analyse what worked and didn't work for GAME, and to come up with solutions and new ideas for what could drive the retailer to success again. So, tell us: how you would change GAME?

Price the games competitively with supermarkets and online retailers and have more playable games in store.Also, have the staff stop pouncing on customers as soon as they enter the store.

GAME can't compete on price, so it has to compete on choice. To do that, it has to wean itself off its over-reliance on the used market and use that shelf space to offer a wider range of games than it already is, including but not limited to keeping less recent games on for longer than they would have otherwise, as well as stocking games it would otherwise have passed up.

To an extent this does mean that GAME would have to become a publisher itself, or at least cozy up to/buy out an existing smaller publisher in order to bring games that may have bypassed retail and gone straight to digital distribution back to The Disc Side.

It probably wouldn't hurt to do some kind of events in-store, but I've no idea what sort of thing they'd do- most personalities in gaming aren't based in the UK, so anything in the vein of signings or talks are out of the question, and I'm not sure tournaments are the big draw people think they would be.

That all being said, apparently GAME's UK operation was always profitable and it's expanding overseas too aggressively that's hurt them- so maybe they'll be fine in the short term.

as silly as it may sound, you are correct.

a lot of us "gamers" are waiting for the next big release.

so for example, me3.

i personally shopped around until i got the ultimate lowest price of the standard edition, which at the tie i pre-ordered, was Zavvi. I never use Zavvi. like ever. But, most people are wise-ing up to cheaper prices online.

my most recent walks into games stores saw games like professer layton and uncharted 3 at 35 to 45 quid mark.

i have recently purchased uncharted 3 on play.com on playtrade brand new, for 21 quid. because, i shopped around. why on earth would i go on a bus on weekend to town, just to look at silly prices of games in a game shop, when i can just type into google "price comparison for ps3 games" and find it compared across about 10 different retailers. and get the same game for about half the price.

game and gamestations biggest market was selling games for cash, and trade ins and their deals for trade-ins on new releases.

They need to set an example. they need to pick a few big A-class titles, like uncharted, like me3, skyrim and make them sudenly low, lke ultra low, for one week only or something. 25 quid for me3 etc. get people into the store. get people to notice other bargins and make people wnt to come to the store.

if i saw an advert for game tonight on tv and it said, ps vita, half price, for one week only, in store only, i would be there in a shot. anything else that caught my eye would then be on my etc, its how marketng works.

game became un-popular by a few experiences and word of mouth.

Bundles would be a step in the right direction; either combining new releases with their predecessors under one competitive price OR with peripherals. Though to be honest their Ps3 choice has always been so lacklustre I doubt I'll ever return.

Also I am ashamed to admit I wouldn't change having that hot student work there who knows sweet FA about games, computers, media or technology.

Reserving games as soon as they come in stock, using gift cards online, hire staff who know something about games and have a console/dedicated rig, BOGOF sales, more exclusive content for pre-orders and eliminating Wii games and replacing them with PS2/Gamecube games. Reason being that the PS2/GC were better consoles and actually fun to play. Annihilate casual games of all types and rebrand GAME as a hardcore gamers shop.

I think the first thing they have to do is cut back on the used game sales. This is necessary to get the publishers back on side.

Then I think then need to pump the publishers for a bit of promotional money/ discounts that can either be used to bring more instore attactions or cheaper prices. Its things like that in my opinion that would bring gamers back.

They need an event or two (even a local COD tournament), a reason to bother going into the shop. A dedicated section for lesser know games would be nice with staff that knew about them and tried to expand casual gamers beyond COD and fifa.

As I said before they need to win the publishers back.

GAME cannot compete with online retailing. The same is true in all kinds of retail markets. Online retailers are killing the highstreet. GAME felt the effects worse because of excessive expansion and a poor business model. And (of course) the crash.
As a consquence GAME has to offer something online retailers cannot offer: somewhere people can go to meet. All the gamers I know I know through the internet. This is ridiculous. In the 21st century gaming is not gay. Film goers can go to cinemas, fans of bands can go to arenas: where the f**k do we go? OK, so there might be some embarrassment but a complete re-brand is inevitable so why not re-brand (and re-name) as some kind of bar/gaming setup?
Course, it might only be me who would be interested in this sort of thing...

Sega of America warns of layoffs

Sega of America has said that parent company Sega Sammy's recently announced plans to restructure its loss-making games business could result in a number of layoffs within its western publishing business.

In a statement issued to Joystiq, Sega's US division also reiterated that the company will now focus on established IPs like Sonic and Football Manager, as well as digital content, which should ensure that the likes of Jet Set Radio HD and the rumoured Shenmue remakes get released outside of Japan.

Western releases for other Sega games like Anarchy Reigns, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz and Yakuza 5 could possibly be at risk, although nothing has been confirmed on this front.

Sega of America said: "Due to the challenging economic climate and significant changes within the interactive gaming industry, Sega has made the decision to consolidate its publishing business in order to focus on developing digital content and driving its existing IP such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, Football Manager and the Aliens franchise.

"This realignment of the business around existing and digital IP is a necessity to ensure that Sega continues to invest and enhance its digital business offering, whilst reducing its reliance on traditional packaged goods.

"As a result of the Sega Sammy Board decision to consolidate the business, many of our internal functions will be re-structured and this could result in a number of redundancies within the publishing business across the Western organisation. The company will be entering into a re-structure phase to reflect the unprecedented change in our industry and to move the company forward appropriately.

"The changes will position Sega as a content led organisation, maximising sales with a strong and balanced IP portfolio across both packaged and digital distribution. The management team are confident that the proposed restructure will benefit the company and make it fit for purpose within the changing nature of the industry over the coming years."

Sega of Japan's work is most of their best work - except for the Total War series mostly everything else they produce outside of Japan is dreck. Valkyria Chronicles, the catalogue of Platinum Games, Yakuza - even Binary Domain had its merits. Damn more merits than those movie tie-ins they insist on publishing anyway.

And far, far more merits than anything Sonic Team have produced since the Saturn.

It looks like their getting their current act together by following Colours with Generations which I thoroughly enjoyed and left me craving more.

The rumours about Xbox 360 and PS3 successors are coming in thick and fast now. Microsoft has reportedly told third-party developers its next-generation Xbox will feature in-built Blu-ray and Kinect functionality, take steps to crack down on piracy with an always-on internet connection requirement, and be available in time for Christmas 2013.

Meanwhile, Sony is apparently "confident" PlayStation 4 will release before Xbox 720, with reports claiming that key third party development partners are already working on games for the unannounced console, which players will be able to control using Vita's twin sticks and touch capabilities.

Elsewhere, we started giving away free beta keys for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online, Capcom said it doesn't believe there's a distinction between content locked on a disc and DLC, and former Gamestation MD Martyn Gibbs was appointed as GAME's new CEO, shortly after the retailer's new owner, OpCapita, ruled out closing any more stores in the UK and Ireland, safeguarding the future of 333 outlets and 3,200 employees.

After months of uncertainty and an administration process that saw 100s of stores closed and 1,000s of jobs lost, GAME's future is looking a little brighter today.

With a new owner, a new management team, and assurances that there'll be no further store closures of job losses, the retailer is on the road to recovery.

But Richard Wilson, CEO of UK video games trade association TIGA, has today warned that GAME needs to get with the times quickly if it's going to counter the growing threat to its business posed by digital marketplaces.

"GAME has suffered from physical and online competition, the shift from physical to digital games, and the decision by big global publishers not to stock GAME with new releases," he said.

"Given the rapid transition to digital gaming with consumers spending money on platforms such as Steam, Origin, the App Store, PSN, XBLA and Android market, GAME will have to develop a digital strategy - fast.

"More generally, it is vital that we support the growing number of small to medium sized developers and digital publishers that have emerged over recent years. TIGA are working hard to support these studios in a variety of ways, including through the provision of best practice information and advice."

10 ways to extend your laptop's life
Energize your laptop and extend its life and performance

For many of us, laptops are an indispensable part of our lives. They travel with us to school, to work, and even on vacation, giving us immediate access to the internet and our files wherever we are.

And new advances in technology have made laptops so lightweight and portable, they can even double as chic accessories, with a range of colors and designs you can personalize to match your every outfit or mood.

But don't let the designer covers and colorful keyboards fool you—a laptop is still an investment. And with the right treatment, your laptop will last much longer than this year's fashion trends.

Take care of your hardware

The health of your laptop relies largely on the condition of its hardware. While you can't completely avoid wear-and-tear, you can keep your hardware as healthy as possible by following 3 simple rules:

Keep your display and keyboards clean. With proper care and treatment, your computer's display, keyboards, and tracking pad should last for a long time—even longer than the hard drive itself. However, these components can also be easily damaged through careless mistakes.

Keep food and liquids away from your laptop to prevent any inadvertent spills or stains, regularly wipe the screen with a lint-free cloth (dry or lightly sprayed with glass cleaner), and clean out the keyboard using compressed air.

Don't let your laptop overheat. Perhaps the worst enemy of hardware is heat. The good news is that hard drives in laptops can be more tolerant of high temperatures than those in desktop models, but even a laptop is susceptible to damage caused by excessive heat. If the temperature is high, make sure air can flow and circulate around your laptop and that the exhaust fan is not blocked. Install and update antivirus software. It's critical to the life of your laptop that you keep viruses, spyware, and other malicious programs from infiltrating it. Your first line of defense is good anti-malware software, and because malicious files evolve and change very quickly, it's equally important that you have a program capable of adapting to new threats.

Put your laptop into "sleep" or "hibernate" mode when you're not using it. Configure your laptop so that it powers down after being idle for a set amount of time—this conserves a great deal of battery power. Laptops typically offer a "sleep" (or "standby") mode and a "hibernation" mode.

With a sleep mode, power is suspended from the display and from most, but not all, system operations. When you return, you'll be up and running quickly, but your laptop still will be drawing some energy from the battery pack.

With a hibernate mode, your laptop is not using any battery power at all. Of the two modes, hibernate saves the most energy, but the time it takes for everything to power up will be a bit longer; this mode may be ideal for when you're away from your laptop for a long period of time.

Turn off or limit use of power-draining processes. There are a number of small changes you can make to cut down on the amount of battery power your laptop uses: for example, you can dim the brightness of the screen, turn down the sound, and turn off the WiFi feature when you're not web surfing. The basic rule of thumb is: if you're not using it, turn it off. Read more useful (and eco-friendly) energy-saving tips.

Beware of energy-hogging background programs. Some PC maintenance programs run their system checks while you're working on other projects: this processing can not only slow you down, but can drain energy away from your battery right when you need it the most.

Chevy adds GogoLink navigation to list of MyLink apps

Chevy's MyLink system, which integrates smartphone connectivity with the car, adds the GogoLink navigation app to the current Pandora and Stitcher offerings.

Pandora has become the app most widely integrated withcars, but while customized streaming-music channels are nice, navigation is much more useful. Chevy obliges by adding the GogoLink navigation app to its MyLink connectivity system.

GogoLink will be available late this year in Chevy Sonic and Spark models equipped with the MyLink option. Including it in these cars lets Chevy offer navigation at the bottom of its model lineup.

MyLink's apps are embedded in the car, and the driver's smartphone gets used as the data conduit.

GogoLink, based on the GogoLive navigation app, not only shows point-to-point route guidance, but also integrates real-time traffic data to help avoid trouble spots. It includes a points-of-interest database and integrated Google local search.

Most usefully for navigation, it downloads and stores maps, so it can provide navigation in areas with no data connection.

Chevy will demonstrate its GogoLink integration at the New York International Auto Show, which runs from April 6 to 15.
