Teenagers making a pact to get pregnant together is really scary and makes you wonder what would push them to do something like that.

Gloucester Massachusetts, is Americas oldest seaport. It is known for its beaches, seafood and its New England charm. Many movies, including “The Perfect Storm”, and “Mermaids” have used Gloucester as a back drop. Last summer, the city got the National press it did not want nor need, thanks to an increase of teen pregnancies that were rumored to have come out of a pact; a pregnancy pact.
Remember that pregnancy pact at Gloucester High School? You know, where everyone thought some Gloucester teens made a pact to get pregnant, but really they just all got pregnant at the same time (one of them by a homeless man!) and made a pact to raise the babies together? And Time magazine said it happened because of opposition to abortion, and others said it was because Gloucester is crumbling, and it was a big uproar for a while but has now disappeared except presumably there are still babies being raised by teens as a result?

Checkout some pregnancy pact pictures

<img style="float:left; When you have no experience with babies, being told that a sick baby behaves differently from a well baby is of little comfort. if everything about your baby seems unfamiliar, it is hard to have confidence that you can and will recognize changes that indicate your baby is ill. Besides, healthy babies can cry for a couple of hours each day. Crying does not tell you as much in the first weeks as it will when your baby is older. So how will you know if your baby is sick? Asking yourself these questions may help:.

Is there a change in the baby's behavior? Is the baby crying more than usual? Has the tone of the cry changed? Is the crying at a different time of day than usual? Is the baby more irritable than usual? Is the baby sleeping more or less than usual? Does the baby seem lethargic or listless?

Has the baby's appetite or digestion changed? Is the baby eating less than usual? Has the baby vomited more than once? If the baby is vomiting, is the vomiting forceful? (This is called projectile vomiting.) Are there signs of constipation? That is, are the stools hard or more solid than usual? Are there signs of diarrhea? That is, are the stools watery, or more runny than usual? Are they more frequent than usual? Is the baby urinating less frequently than usual? Has the color of the urine changed?

Has there been a change in the baby's breathing? Does the baby seem to have trouble breathing? Does the baby sound congested? Does the baby have a runny or stuffy nose? Is the baby coughing?

How does the baby look? Is the baby's skin pale or flushed? Is there a rash anywhere on the baby's body? Do the baby's eyes look glassy or dull? Is there any discharge from the eyes?

Does the baby have a fever?

Any of these changes could indicate illness. if you notice any of them, or other worrisome changes in Your baby, call your baby's care- giver.

Labor Pain Relief During Birth Options

Childbirth classes can teach you breathing and relaxation techniques to help you cope with pain experienced during labor and delivery. The amount of pain felt during childbirth is different for every woman. For some women, the techniques learned in the childbirth classes are enough to relieve their pain, and medication is not necessary.

More Pain Relief Options

TENS

Birthing Pool

Doula

Gas and Air

Pethidine

Epidural/ Mobile Epidural

Spinal Block

Meptid (Meptazinol)

Infertility Tests - An Overview

Infertility tests are done to help find out why a woman cannot become pregnant. The tests help find whether the problem is with the man, the woman, or both. Tests usually include a physical examination, semen analysis, blood tests, and special procedures.
Types of Infertility Tests

Female Surgical Testing
Infertility may be the result of abnormalities in the reproductive organs. If fertility tests have eliminated such factors as sperm count or hormone levels as the cause of infertility, female diagnostic surgical testing may be indicated.

Hormone Testing
Infertility testing for hormone levels may determine if they are a factor in the failure to conceive and, if so, what fertility drugs may be indicated. Female hormonal imbalances can cause ovarian problems, while imbalances in men can be a sign of testicular problems.

Ultrasound Testing
When couples visit a fertility clinic to undergo fertility tests, it is common for doctors to order the least invasive form of testing first. Ultrasound testing can be used to diagnose infertility problems in men and women.

Semen Analysis
Semen analysis is an infertility testing procedure that can help determine if low sperm count, motility, shape, or other male factor infertility problems are possible causes of failure to conceive.

Male Surgical Testing
Male fertility testing can include surgical procedures such as a testicular biopsy and vasography. These tests are designed to detect blockages, as well as problems with sperm production.

Irregular menstrual period cycle - Causes

A wide variety of factors can be responsible for irregular periods, among them:

Significant weight gain or loss

Over-exercise

Poor nutrition (or a diet too high in carbohydrates)

Smoking

Drug use

Caffeine

Excessive alcohol use (interfering with how the liver metabolizes estrogen and progesterone)

Eating disorders

Increased stress

Polycystic ovarian syndrome/estrogen dominance

Uterine abnormalities (fibroids/cysts/polyps/endometriosis)

Hormonal imbalance related to perimenopause

Medications

Chemotherapy

Recent childbirth, miscarriage, or D&C

Breastfeeding

Prevention of Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Most women believe that they can prevent stretch marks by using creams and lotions. There are many formulations on the market today that claim to help prevent stretch marks. Some of these may help moisturize your skin and reduce itching. They may help reduce some stretch marks however there are no scientific studies that support this.

However, there are some things you can do to limit the possibility of getting stretch marks. Following these guidelines, all of which are good for your overall health and the condition of your skin, will go a long way toward putting the odds in your favor.

 1. Eat a healthy, diverse and balanced diet that keeps your weight gain within the recommended range of 25 to 35 pounds.
 2. Use wash cloth to massage the areas where you have stretch marks, or want to prevent stretch marks from appearing.
 3. Drink plenty of water. Hydration is important for your overall health and well-being as well as that of your growing baby.
 4. Generally, most of the babies are born with a specific shape to their head, which occurs due to the pressure of birth canal, at the time of delivery. The little flattening that results from delivery cannot be changed. However; a positional plagiocephaly can be prevented with a little care. Avoiding a flat head in your baby is necessary because it looks weird and may even lead to some health risks. Moreover, a child with flat head syndrome also may develop a prominent forehead, abnormally shaped ears, and sometimes, even uneven facial features. Go through the tips given below, to know how to prevent your baby from getting a flat head

Reposition Therapy

Most of the children sleep on their back and this can cause flattening of that particular side of their head, which is always pressed down. So, don’t put your baby to sleep in the same position every time. It is necessary to put pressure on different areas of the head and positioning him/her in different positions will greatly reduce this problem. Put your baby to sleep on his or her side as well as back. In addition, you need to limit his/her time in the swing and switch him/her side to side, while feeding.

Sleep Pillow

Some sleep pillows are especially designed to support the back of the baby and prevent the occurrence of flat head. Ask your podiatrist about it and then buy it from a baby shop. With this, you can put your baby’s head at the foot of the crib one day and change it to the head of the crib next day.

Place Him On Tummy

The more time your baby spends on his tummy, the better it is for the shape of his/her head. Some babies don’t prefer to stay on their tummy; however you can distract them by putting toys in front and singing lullabies to them. Start preparing your baby for bed early and put some time aside for tummy time.

Baby-wearing

You can keep your baby’s head in proper shape by carrying him/her in a sling, for some amount of time in a day. It will help limit the time spent by your baby on his back and with it, the chances of getting a flat head.

Play With Your Baby

You can play with your baby lying down or face-to-face or by lifting him/her up and down. You can use some special pillow or a rolled out towel or blanket to keep under his or her head, while playing.

Consult A Pediatrician

If you feel that your baby has a very prominent flat head, even after you have followed the above points, you need to consult your pediatrician. You baby may have developed torticollis i.e. tightening of the neck muscles. You doctor will be able to tell you about the condition in a better way and cure it as well.

Breastfeeding Positions

When you are new mother, there are a number of things that you have to learn and teach your baby. One of them is to breast-feed. Sit down comfortably. The baby should be on his side facing you. Tuck the baby close to you, with his head on your forearm. His nose should be opposite your nipple and in level with it. If you find it easier use a pillow at first. When his mouth is wide open, bring him towards your breast, allow him to take as much of your breast as possible. His tongue should be under your breast. If your breast hurts a lot or he manages to dislodge himself, start again. Repeat this till you get it right and feel him lodged firmly. Things you should be able to see: Baby tucked close to your body.

The chin should be against your breast and stretched upward and not tucked in.

Mouth should be open wide and their bottom lip should curl outwards.

There should be movement of the face and jaw.

Lower lip should take in more of the areola that the upper lip.

Things that you shouldn't see:

Cheeks that are sucked in.

Lip action as if they are sucking a straw.

Sounds you should hear:

Slow and quick sounds of milk being swallowed.

Sounds you should not hear:

Clicking noises

Smacking lips

You should feel:

Being firmly gripped.

Feel the letdown reflex, a tingling feeling in the breasts, usually when feeding begins as the milk flows to the baby.

Slight pain when the baby begins to feed, in the initial weeks.

You should not feel:

Pain lasting longer than the initial momentary pain.

If you feel, hear and see things that you shouldn't, then put your finger gently inside the baby's mouth, between the corner of his mouth and your breast. This will stop his suckling and prevent you from becoming sore. Re-position the baby.

Before you begin breast-feeding, make sure that you are comfortable, relaxed and have enough support. Make whatever arrangements are required to keep you comfortable while feeding. Remember the following:

Tuck the baby close to you

His ear, shoulder and hip should be in the same line and not twisted.

Always ensure the baby is facing your breast, if he is turning away feeding becomes more difficult for them.

Memorize 'tummy to mummy/chest to chest/nose to nipple/chin to breast'.

There are a number of positions to breast-feed a baby. Here are a few of them:

Traditional position: Keep a few pillows on your lap; place the baby on it so that he is on the same level as your breasts. If your baby is sleeping, the best way to carry him/her is to place him/her lift-off push chair.

A carrycot is fitted with mattress, which can be used in case the baby is sleeping overnight. While traveling with your baby in a public transport vehicle, purchase a foldable and lightweight push chair. Three-wheel pushchairs are suitable for country walking and jogging with your child. A waterproof push chair will be apt, if you are traveling with your baby to areas prone to rainfall. A twin pushchair is suitable for twins.

While purchasing a pushchair of any type, make sure that it is sturdy and the seat is well padded. You would not want to feel uncomfortable with your baby, while de-boarding from a train, bus or car. Hence, make sure that the push chair is foldable, which doesn't leave you frustrated every time you board or de-board any automobile, with your child in it. Wheel is a decisive factor of the travel gear. Lockable swivel wheels are apt for effortless navigation.

Car Seats For Baby

There are certain things to consider, when you are purchasing car seat for your baby. First, check the weight limit of the car seat, as to how much weight it can bear. Generally, most of the car seats are designed to accommodate infants weighing up to 20 pounds. Next, consider the durability of the car seat. Pay attention to its height limit as well. You should also make sure that the car seat shields the baby, in the event of an accident.

Car seats that specially designed for infants can be used until the baby is nine months old. Rear-facing seats are appropriate for small babies, because they are safer. Such seats can be used in the front passenger seat as well, provided your car is equipped with air bags. Shop for car seats that have a base system, which is beneficial for installation and removal of the seat. This is very important to consider, because baseless infant seats are more likely to be installed loosely or incorrectly.

Traveling Tips

Always carry the basic skincare products, while traveling with your baby.

Do not pack too many suitcases and bags when you are traveling with your infant, because you will also have to carry the pushchair along with you.

Carry a bottle warmer with you, if your child drinks from a feeding bottle.

You may take some snacks with you, if you baby is old enough to nibble them.

Nappy Rashes in Baby

Nappy rash, a common problem faced by infants, is characterized by inflammation of the skin in the nappy area. Stale urine and faeces accumulated in their nappy make the baby's skin become sore. Irritation in the area surrounding the nappy is another indication of nappy rash. As a result, spots or blotches (red or pink in color) may appear in the affected area, thereby aggravating the problem. While most of the nappy rashes are mild and can be treated with simple skincare routine, the pain or discomfort experienced by the baby makes it a problem that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Learn about the causes and the possible treatment of nappy rash, in the following lines. Causes Of Nappy Rash

When a nappy, with stale urine and faeces, is worn by a child for a long time, the waste products are converted into ammonia, a chemical that can irritate the infant's skin, making it become sore and inflamed.

Fungal infection is another leading cause of nappy rash. In case your baby's skin is damp for a long time, it can lead to the growth of fungus known as candida. The baby's skin starts reacting to the production of ammonia. When it is exposed to the fungus, the problem is even more aggravated.

Apart from the above causes, nappy rash can also be a problem due to eczema. If your child is already suffering from eczema, the skin around the nappy area can become dry and sore. Moreover, your child will not be able to find a relief from nappy rash even after frequent nappy changes, if he/she is suffering from eczema.

The red and scaly skin of the baby is caused by seborroeic dermatitis, which is another cause of nappy rash. This condition is commonly seen in baby aged between two week and six months.

Bacterial infection is another prevalent cause of nappy rash. Check whether your baby's nappy is unhygienic, or infected with bacteria.

Allergic reaction to a particular substance, such as grooming products including soap, fragrances, detergents, oils, and powders can trigger nappy rash. The condition may even lead to irritation and inflammation on the affected part of the body.

Treatments For Nappy Rash

Change the nappy of your baby regularly. Be sure to replace the soiled nappy with a new one, whenever your baby defecates. Even if a nappy can soak the urine for a long time, it is better to change it frequently.

Leave your baby to play around without wearing a nappy, as long as possible. He/she would feel better without the nappy. Moreover, the rash will be healed quickly.

Do not forget to follow a skincare routine for your baby. Clean the genital areas of the baby, every time after he/she defecates. Allow the area to dry completely, before putting on a new diaper.

You may cover your baby's nappy area with a thin layer of protective ointment or a baby's powder. Do this only after ensuring that your baby is not allergic to such products.

Allow room for air to circulate in the nappy area. Therefore, do not tighten the diaper too much. Nappies should fit somewhat loosely, so that the area of the body is allowed to 'breathe'.

A normal nappy rash may continue for two to three days. If the condition persists for more than five days, consult a doctor and get a medicine prescribed for the same.

Potty seats for Baby

Toilet training can be one of the most difficult phases of parenting a new born child. These first baby toys help in the over-all development of the personality of the child. These soft baby toys are generally colorful so that it appears attractive to the eyes of the babies.Infant toys are generally attached to the cribs or set on the floor, as the child can't move. They are sometimes hung on the upper side of the child cot so that the sound and movement amuse the little oneThere are some baby toys can be attached to car seats and strollers. Also you can attach aquarium to the cribs of your babies so that the sight of the vibrant colored fishes and sound of the water ripples soothes the sight and hearing organs of the baby.

Another useful toy for the babies are the rattles and teethers especially when the child is chewing. But it is better to keep them in refrigerator when unused. The coolness of the refrigerated rattle will be a relief to the gums of the baby. Also toys that make noise or move when squeezed also create massive development in the child. They get to know that their act of squeezing the toy makes it move or occurs some sound in the toy.

You can also hang activity center on the side of the crib of your child or you can set the activity center on the floor and put your child on it. Some of the sets have give your child the driving facility, which helps to develop the reasoning, and driving power of the babies.

Though it might appear quite astonishing to your ears but another way of developing the intellect and personality of the child is by reading simple short stories to him. Reading habit never goes without paying off and it can easily overcome all the obstacles that age creates. When he is little grown - up then you can give him the more durable rhyme books or other colorful pictured books. Even so it will help to remember the following:Bathing environment should be calm and warm.

The baby should not be hungry or tired.Everything you need should be ready and at hand.

Some babies do not like having a bath. So instead you can 'top and tail' or sponge the baby everyday for sometime: Wrap your baby in a towel to stop them from waving their arms. Undress them only if you want to.

Wipe his eye with a little cotton wool that has been dipped in cooled boiled water. Begin with the inside of his eye and work outward. Wipe the other eye with another piece of cotton wool.

Use wet cotton wool to wipe over and behind his ear. Use fresh piece of cotton wool for each ear.

Wipe their face, neck and under their chin with damp flannel or cotton wool.

Pat dry with a soft towel making sure that they are not damp in the creases.

Wipe dry their hands.

Change their nappy after cleaning nappy area and change into clean clothes. Using special bedtime clothes can help them get used to a bedtime routine.

Hair: You need not wash your baby's hair everyday. Just wiping it with a damp flannel cloth will remove any dirt that is there.

Nails: The easiest way to cut your baby's nails is to nibble them off. You can use a pair of scissors to cut them off while they are asleep. The best time would be after a bath, when the nails are soft.

Ears and Nose: These organs clean themselves, so just wipe them gently with wet cotton wool.

Cradle cap: This is a yellowish crust on the baby's scalp, which looks a little like dandruff. This occurs when the baby is between a month and six months old and almost all babies have it. This does not harm the baby in any way and normally disappears as the baby grows up. If it is noticeable you can do the following:

Use a baby shampoo.

Massage one tablespoon of olive oil or almond oil into his scalp. Leave it on for an hour then wash it clean by shampooing.

Apply oil carefully to ensure that it does not enter the baby's eyes. The baby should not touch the oil as it may get into his eyes after that.

Bicarbonate of soda rinse: Dissolve a teaspoon of soda in 500 ml of warm water and apply on scalp with the help of cotton wool. Shampoo thoroughly. Use this regime once or twice a week.

The flakes will become loose if you gently comb his hair gently.

Never pick or scratch to loosen the flakes.

If serious or you see red patches on the baby's neck and behind his ears then consult a doctor immediately.

Holding your baby

Holding babies can be a puzzle for their dads who dread hurting their soft cuddly bodies and crushing them with their loving embraces. Mom's hugs and dad's embraces are the right of every child that enters this world and makes a new baby feel loved and cared for. The reassurance communicated by the firm and secure arms of a father and soothing touches of a mother is irreplaceable by anything else and plays an important role in the development of a child's reactions to the world. Similarly, swaddling the baby is also an ancient way to soothe a child when mothers cannot afford to hold or hug the child and have to leave it alone for sometime while finishing other household work. Here are some useful tips for you:

The head of the infants need a firm support, as the muscles of their neck are still not strong enough to hold the head in position.

Pick the baby very gently and keep your movements slow and smooth.

Be confident and do not pick the baby when your hands are shaking for you may drop the child accidentally.

If the baby is sleepy, hold them upright against your shoulder. Rest their head against the shoulder; place one hand on their upper back and other on their bottom.

To rock the baby or talk to them, cradle them in arms while resting their little heads just above the crook of the arm and let the lower arm support the rest of their body. Use the other hand to rest their bottom and make sure that their head is a slightly raised position than the bottom.

See, if your baby really gets soothed when being swaddled or becomes more frantic. However, most babies do calm down by swaddling as they feel as if they are being held securely.

To swaddle the baby, lay them on a cotton blanket or sheet spread on a flat surface. The neck of the baby should be in line with the long edge. One side of the sheet should be passed diagonally across the baby's shoulder and tucked under the body snugly. The arms of the baby should be free to move and sheet should not be very tight. Bring the other side across the other shoulder of the baby and tuck it under the other side of their body safely. The bottom of the baby may also be tucked under baby's feet.

If you have tightly swaddled the baby and the little one falls asleep, keep an eye on the temperature and breathing pattern of the baby for overheating may cause a problem.

Crying Baby

Infant communications is mostly limited to crying and it is the only way that babies can attract the express attention of their parents and let them know that they need something. The art of interpreting their wails and moans and figure out why the baby is crying depends on the skills of parents. Here are some problems of cranky babies and their possible solutions:

Hunger is the most common reason for crying babies and easiest to solve too. Feeding the babies may soothe them almost instantly.

Baby wailing just after the feed may indeed be asking you to help him pass the wind. Hold him in the upright position against your shoulder for the purpose.

Babies try to attract your attention after wetting their nappies for a diaper change. Do not delay it long for it may cause nappy rash.

Babies may cry if they are feeling too hot or too cold. So, use an appropriate blanket and monitor the room temperature according to the baby's needs.

Some mischievous naughty infant may just feel neglected, if you leave them alone for long and cry to be held. Carry them in a sling or baby carrier so that you can move about with your baby and yet get the work done.

If the babies are very tired, they might cry themselves to sleep. Massaging them can help them soothe too, in such cases. They are usually their happy self after the restful nap.

It has been observed that cranial osteopaths can gently massage baby's head and neck to soothe them after a difficult birth experience.

Very high-pitched tones or frantic crying may mean that your baby is really ill and needs professional medical help. Go and see the doctor immediately.

Some babies do not like to come out of womb and cry incessantly because of new experiences, lights, noises and stimulations or may be precocious enough to try to do things they are still not capable of physically and cry in frustration. Such crankiness of babies usually disappears with age, maturity and development.

If the crying baby is getting on your nerves, you may need to vent out your feeling by punching a pillow, have a warm bath, talk to someone who would listen patiently to you, ask somebody to take care for the baby for a few hours and take a short break and ask advice from the doctor.

Premature babies

The normal term for a baby is 37 weeks. Those babies that are born before this period are premature babies. Modern medical technology has advanced to such an extent that today babies that are born at 23 or 24 weeks can be kept alive and monitored till they reach full term. Babies born at 25 weeks and after have a perfectly good chance of healthy survival today. Special Care Baby Units (SCBU) are designed and equipped to look after sick and early babies. Premature babies have Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) or difficulty in breathing. As the baby is born too early its lungs haven't developed enough to produce surfactant, an important substance that prevents the inner side of the lungs from fusing together. Today the babies are given artificial surfactant. They need special care and are kept in an incubator in a controlled environment and fed through tubes to their stomach.
