Frank Buzz Grady

It is with deep regrets, sorrow and sympathy that I inform you that Frank "Buzz" Grady, Elmhurst Traveler Football Alumnus and AFA Hall of Fame, Class of 2009, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 25,2010 in Englewood, Florida. He was 78 years old. Buzz was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in late June of this year. Deborah, Buzz's wife, will be holding a memorial service for Buzz sometime in the near future. As soon as I get the specific information from Debbie I will pass it on.

Those of you who knew and played with Buzz knew him not only as a hell of a football player but a fun loving guy who enjoyed life and a good time. Buzz was great to be around because he kept you loose with his care free attitude. It was great that he got a chance to enjoy his induction into the American Football Association Semi-Pro Hall of Fame in 2009. God bless him and his entire family.

The mission of the Sports Legacy Institute is to advance the study, treatment and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups. SLI was founded in 2007 to "Solve the Sports Concussion Crisis," and in 2009, SLI launched programs to also serve our military veterans. SLI is primarily focused on the study of the degenerative brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, a condition caused by repetitive concussive and sub-concussive brain injuries.

SAN FRANCISCO – Some 320,000 of the nation's smallest nonprofits filed information forms with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) between January 1 and the October 15 deadline. Thousands more are expected to lose their exemptions because they have not filed.
The new rule also was a way to weed out the IRS' records of defunct nonprofits. Under the Pension Protection Act of 2006, tax-exempt organizations that do not file annual IRS Tax Form 990 returns (or at least an abbreviated version for the smallest nonprofits) for three straight years automatically lose their exemption. That third year is the 2009 tax year, and that deadline was May 15, which the IRS extended until today (Oct. 15) after a huge cry from the nonprofit sector.
Losing tax-exempt status means an organization would have to file income tax returns and pay income tax while donors would not be able to deduct contributions, and it would have to re-file for tax-exemption with the IRS.

Unfortunately, despite previous communications from the Family of the late Ron Real stating their position, the distraction of organizations/individuals attempting to use the name of Ron Real for a trophy/championship game continues. This is not only sickening and but also extremely disrespectful! NO means NO !

After just celebrating our 30th Anniversary, the many achievements of our founder Ron Real and 600 plus Hall of Fame members, and the positive image at our level that we continue to promote, the seriousness of this issue has become more paramount. We will continue to distance ourselves from organizations that characterize themselves as associates of the American Football Association………American Football News Today, the Ron Real Trophy, the Minor Pro Hall of Fame, Minor League Football News Hall of Fame, etc.

The AFA Board of Directors and family of the late Ron Real once again state that these groups/initiatives are unauthorized and have nothing to do with the AFA, the AFA Semi-pro Football Hall of Fame or the AFA's American Football News™ created by the late Ron Real, founder of the AFA.

SAN FRANCISCO – Some 320,000 of the nation's smallest nonprofits filed information forms with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) between January 1 and the October 15 deadline. Thousands more are expected to lose their exemptions because they have not filed.

The (IRS) has been trying for months to alert charities of the requirements, even extending a May 15 deadline until Oct. 15. Large, national nonprofits might have full-time chief financial officers or even hire outside accounting firms to handle their tax forms, but the average nonprofit in the U.S. is run by volunteers. There may be more than 1.8 million charities in the U.S. but the vast majority are local community groups, like the Little League or the Woman's Club.

The new rule also was a way to weed out the IRS' records of defunct nonprofits. Under the Pension Protection Act of 2006, tax-exempt organizations that do not file annual IRS Tax Form 990 returns (or at least an abbreviated version for the smallest nonprofits) for three straight years automatically lose their exemption. An organization with annual gross receipts of up to $25,000 must file a Form 990-N, or e-Postcard, while those with gross receipts of less than $500,000 must file a Form 990-EZ. Nonprofits that have revenue of more than a half-million dollars are required to file the Form 990.

Victim Vocabulary

The Victim phrase that creates the sense of powerlessness that often accompanies us when in a state of victim-hood. They are words we hear spoken by ourselves and others and they stop progress and positive expansion of any kind dead in its tracks!

What phrase could possibly have that sort of power over us? It is simply the words, "I can't ...."

When we refer to our abilities using these two words we limit ourselves mightily. Such words are often used as an excuse that prohibits us from even trying something new or different.

For example to say, "I can't understand this math problem." When we say the words and believe them we simply go no further. We've decided "it can't be done." Now someone else will have to do it for us.

Of course this sort of "victim game-playing" can be harmless up to a certain point. "I can't reach it, will you get it for me?" spoken by a young woman to the tall, handsome stranger standing beside her can be seen as a light flirtation perhaps. But even this sort of repartee is not a good habit to get into because
we run the risk of believing them.

"I can't do it" then becomes an automatic response to everything! These two words, "I can't" are limiting and disabling when believed.
The more we convince ourselves and others that we can't do something, the more unable to do we become. Our lives become increasingly narrow and constricted in direct proportion to how often we think and speak the words, "I can't ...."

Begin to listen for how often you hear yourself using the words. "I can't." When you observe it, quickly ask yourself "Is it really true that I can't?"

Try replacing the phrase "I can't" with one of the healthier, more accurate phrases below.
"I can!"
"I can, but am choosing not to ...
"I don't want to do it."
"I want you to do it."
"I am willing to learn ... show me."
"I am learning a lot through trial and error."

Notice how expansive and freeing these phrases are, in contrast to the dead-end words, "I can't." Refuse to limit yourself with such victim vocabulary!

Virginia Crusaders win Mason Dixon football title

With the Mason Dixon Football League championship on the line, the Virginia Crusaders played like champions. Their defense shut down the power-running game of the defending-champion Arbutus (Md.) Big Red, and after a slow start, the offense proved virtually unstoppable as the Crusaders cruised to an impressive 38-6 victory Saturday night at Bailey Field.

Red & Black plays tonight in Harvest Bowl semis

The Watertown Red and Black will host Lackawanna tonight in a semifinal game of the Harvest Bowl Classic at Carthage Central School.

The football game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

The Lackawanna Dynasty (11-1) play in the United States Football Alliance and were rated No. 1 in the state before losing in their league playoffs, according to Watertown head coach George Ashcraft.

"It should be a great game," Ashcraft said. "Both teams are pretty equal. They're big and physical and have a lot of potential."

Watertown (12-2), which defeated Finger Lakes two weekends ago in the first round, is one victory away from the championship game. If the Red and Black wins today's matchup, they play in the title game versus the Red City Outlaws/New Jersey Buccaneers winner on Nov. 13 at Carthage.

Staph Infections Associated With Artificial Turf ?

As high school and college athletes prepare for a new football season, sports trainers and coaches are concerned about outbreaks of an antibiotic-resistant staph bacterium that some people have associated with synthetic turf fields. But a study by researchers in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences should help put those concerns to rest.

Conducted by the university's Center for Turfgrass Science, the study found no trace of Staphylococcus aureus bacterium in any of the 20 infilled synthetic turf fields tested in various locations in Pennsylvania.

Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterium that often lives harmlessly on the skin or in the nose. When introduced into the body through a cut or medical incision, it can cause anything from minor skin lesions to life-threatening bloodstream infections, pneumonia or organ damage. A strain of the bacterium, MRSA (methicillin-resistantstaphylococcus aureus), has developed resistance to the antibiotic -- synthetic penicillin -- typically used to treat it and is becoming a major concern for sports teams with synthetic turf fields. The strain has also become one of the most common causes of skin infections requiring emergency room treatment nationally.

The Penn State study also found low overall microbial populations in the synthetic turf systems. "The microbe population of natural turfgrass far exceeds anything we've found in the infill systems," McNitt says. "In fact, a number of the infill systems had zero living microbes in the sample at the time of testing."

The researchers did find S. aureus on other surfaces (blocking pads, weight equipment, stretching tables and used towels), as well as on the hands of five randomly tested passersby. The bottom line, McNitt says, is that while everyone should be concerned about the spread of bacteria and the cleanliness of equipment and other surfaces that players contact, infilled synthetic turf systems do not appear to be a breeding ground for microbes generally.

"Some other studies indicate that a player playing on synthetic turf may acquire more skin abrasions due to the abrasiveness of the surface," McNitt says. "Thus, they have more entry points for the staph, but they're not getting it from the field -- they're picking it up in the locker room or somewhere else. This year's Class of Hall of Famers will be honored at the AFA's 30th Anniversary Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Dinner which will take place at the Hilton Suites Chicago/Oak Brook, 10 Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois June 24 - June 25, 2010.

Elmhurst Travelers Semi-Pro Football Team 40 Years Existence

Aside from the AFA National Association's concerns for bringing recognition to today's market of semi-pro type teams and leagues - its desire to keep alive the memories of those who were associated with this level of the sport for the past 100 years has come to the forefront in the formation of the AFA's Alumni Clubs. Operating under the umbrella of the AFA's non-profit tax exempt corporation, the American Football Association has begun issuing "Charters" to team, regional and state alumni organization who qualify for official Alumni Club status.

During their first 38 years of existence, the Elmhurst Travelers forged a record of 292 wins, 79 losses, 29 ties and 11 undefeated seasons; they averaged 8 wins per season. In 1967 after 40 years of existence, George Kulton (AFA HoF Class of '86) owner and coach of the Elmhurst Travelers semi-pro football team retired and sold the franchise to Rockford, Illinois then becoming the Rockford Rams.

Please note picture of Elmhurst Travelers Jackets. Stars indicate "championships" and "bursts" indicate teams played for/awards. These jackets can be provided for any team, colors make no difference. We want to congratulate the chartered Elmhurst Travelers Alumni Organization which was organized by Roman Strzala (romanstrzala@juno.com) Hall of Fame Class of 2002. This newly formed alumni club has established a set of by-laws and has developed a process for submitting nominees to the AFA's Hall of Fame. We use this organization as a model and best practice for how to establish Alumni Clubs. A separate website is being setup to recognize Alumni Clubs as we continue to grow our network of semi pro alumni.

AFA ANNOUNCES NAMES OF THOSE SELECTED FOR INDUCTION INTO THE SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME - "CLASS OF 2010"

Recently the AFA/Hall of Fame selection committee completed its annual task of reviewing personal profiles of qualified individuals nominated for induction into the Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame as the. . . "Class of 2010". Information submitted by HOF alumni and subsequent review by the selection committee resulted in the selection of 21 people for enshrinement this year. The American Football Association is a national 501(c) (3) non-profit, tax exempt corporation in its 30th year of operation and is dedicated to the advancement of adult (semi-pro) football from coast-to-coast.

AFA HALL OF FAME DINNER RESERVATIONS STILL AVAILABLE !

AFA ANNOUNCES NAMES OF THOSE SELECTED FOR INDUCTION INTO THE SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME - "CLASS OF 2010"

Recently the AFA/Hall of Fame selection committee completed its annual task of reviewing personal profiles of qualified individuals nominated for induction into the Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame as the. . . "Class of 2010". Information submitted by HOF alumni and subsequent review by the selection committee resulted in the selection of 21 people for enshrinement this year. The American Football Association is a national 501(c) (3) non-profit, tax exempt corporation in its 30th year of operation and is dedicated to the advancement of adult (semi-pro) football from coast-to-coast.

This year's Class of Hall of Famers will be honored at the AFA's 30th Anniversary Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Dinner which will take place at the Hilton Suites Chicago/Oak Brook, 10 Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois June 24 - June 25, 2010.

AFA TO ANNOUNCE SELECTIONS FOR INDUCTION INTO THE SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME - "CLASS OF 2010"

AFA TO ANNOUNCE THE NAMES OF THOSE SELECTED FOR INDUCTION INTO THE SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME - "CLASS OF 2010"

The AFA announced today that they are reviewing nominations of those individuals who have been singled out for enshrinement into the national association's "Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame" . . . Class of 2010. The process involves reviewing bios of each potential inductee prior to presentation to the selection committee. The national association will then contact each new inductee by mail before releasing all of the names to the public. The public announcement is expected to come later in the week.

Over the past 29 years the AFA has inducted 612 devoted and deserving former 341 players; 98 coaches; 78 executives; 26 officials; 21 pioneers; 20 media/historians; 12 trainer/equipment men; 6 associated with youth football; 5 involved with international semi-pro; 4 from the women's level; and even 1 'super fan'.

30th Annual AFA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony - Friday, June 25, 2010

As stated in previous releases, the AFA's Board of Directors decided in October to establish an annual recurring time frame for Hall of Fame Inductions as June of each year. Hold the date of June 24 & 25, 2010 for the American Football Association's 30th Anniversary Hall of Fame Inductions in Chicago, IL. More info details to follow.

AFA Misrepresentations

We continue to focus our attention on organizations that have characterized themselves as associates of the American Football Association………American Football News Today, the Ron Real Trophy, the American Football Hall of Fame, the Minor Pro Hall of Fame, Minor League Football News Hall of Fame, etc.

As a result of this and previous incidents, the AFA Board of Directors and family of the late Ron Real want to formally state for the record that these groups/initiatives are unauthorized and have nothing to do with the AFA, the AFA Semi-pro Football Hall of Fame or the AFA's American Football News™ created by the late Ron Real, founder of the AFA.

We plan to continue this message in an effort to eliminate confusion, alert the national media, and to further protect the organization, the Real Family, and the general public at large.
