Corporate web server solutions, personal web sites, and small business e-commerce sites require very different web hosting solutions. A corporation would definitely want a dedicated web server, that is managed 24 hours a day 7 days a week, by a staff of highly trained administrators On the other hand, someone who runs a casual, personal web site may find that a basic free web hosting service is more than enough for them.

When choosing a web host it is very important that you first consider what your needs are. After you have figured out your needs(after reading the Web Host Guide) you will be able to choose the correct host type. Web host types can be narrowed down into the following categories:

Minimal Shared Hosting - Free, very little features
Shared Hosting - Most Popular, your web site is located on a server that hosts many other sites.
Dedicated Server Hosting U- Unmanaged (little to no customer support), server administration is left to the customer.
Dedicated Server Hosting M- Managed (includes customer support), the administration is *usually* taken care of.

Basic Shared Hosting - Free

For those who are new to web design it makes little sense to pay a monthly fee for a hosting service when you barely know how to create a web site. Choosing a free host is a logical solution for someone who would like to experiment with web design, or maybe host a low-traffic personal site. Free hosting often includes a small amount of storage and bandwidth. Features also tend to be limited, often with no support for PHP, MySQL, multiple email addresses, and poor web statistics.

Bottom line: Free hosting is great to practice your web design, or even host a web site for family and friends. However, free hosting is not a plausible solution for the serious web master or business owner.

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is the most popular type of web host on the market. Nearly all small businesses, intermediate to large web sites, and professional web sites require only a fraction of the resources of a complete web server. It would be expensive for these sites to all reside on their own server, which makes shared hosting the perfect choice.

The downside to having a shared host is lessened security, due to 10's to 100's of other clients on your server, and usually total email addresses, databases and domains are not unlimited.

Dedicated Servers - Unmanaged

If shared hosting does not give you enough bandwidth, storage, or the features that you require, a dedicated hosting solution may be the right solution for you. With a dedicated server there are no limits on the number of databases and email aliases you can create. Your bandwidth is much greater, with typical dedicated server plans alotting 500-1000GB of bandwidth per month. If extra storage is needed, simply order a new hard drive for your server. The only downside: you must know a great deal about server administration.

Becoming a skilled server administrator requires a great deal of training and computing know how. If you are low on cash and are willing to learn server administration the hard way, prepare for a difficult journey. However, if your budget is large enough, then managed dedicated hosting may be a better solution.

Dedicated Servers - Managed

You have steep requirements for your web site. Shared hosting doesn't work for you, but you do not know how to set up your own web server, nor do you know how to customize it to your needs. You are going to need a lot of assistance to get your server box up and running and you need support when something goes wrong. The solution for you is a managed dedicated solution provider.

Managed hosting is a very specialized market, with a wide range of prices that depend on how much security, reliability, and the level of support you require. Search Engine Optimization is a very hot topic in the World Wide Web. After all, everybody wants to rank higher and come up on the first page of Google search and get more traffic. I have identified and made a list of top 15 SEO practices that I tend to forget quite often. These simple SEO techniques if practiced properly can make a significant difference as to how my pages are ranked in the Search Engine Queries.

Use rel=”nofollow” tag on low value links to not pass the page rank juice. For example ‘Read the rest of the entry’, ‘About’, ‘Contact’ etc.
Use proper anchor text for interlinks. Don’t use ‘here’ or ‘there’.
Optimize the images, always create alt tags and write description in the alt tag.
Use search engine friendly permalinks. Make sure the URLs do not have ‘&’, ‘?’, ‘!’ etc characters.
Use hyphens (-) between words to improve readability.
Do not use underscores (_), use hyphens (-) instead.
Do not use session id in URLs.
Use sticky posts.
Use tag clouds.
Have a category description paragraph.
Let the visitors subscribe to category specific RSS feed
Use internal linking when possible and appropriate.
Use sub-directories rather than sub-domains when possible. Sub-domains do not share link love from the main domain as it is treated as a different domain.
Research the target audience and aim the site content appropriately.
Keep the content up to date. Visitors don’t like outdated content. Updating the content frequently also attracts the Search engines spiders to index the web pages frequently.

As a result, tons of web hosting advertisements can be easily found both online and offline. Their sole intention is clear, they want to catch your attention and win your business.

Sometimes the offers on the advertisement are so attractive that you sign up straight. You could not wait to receive their free gift or their free software. Unfortunately, what turns out is disappointment. You never get what you thought you are getting. You feel cheated. Promotions still remain as promotions but the truth seems to be well covered up by the sales talk.

I consider that marketing tricks.

Here are 6 popular tricks used by web host providers that you should beware of. In fact they are not cheating. They are just presenting their products in such a way that we will not want to find out what is behind the promotions. Therefore it is our responsibility to find out ourselves.

The usual response from the consumer is – Wow, I can store as much files as I want now! That’s cool! For you information, unlimited storage and bandwidth are IMPOSSIBLE! Web hosting is just like the hard disk in your desktop. Your hard disk has a storage limit, so does web hosting. So when a web host offers unlimited, they indeed mean unlimited BUT subjected to their term and conditions. The next question is what are the terms?

Trick 2: Cheap Pricing

With the fierce competition in the industry, pricing war has already begun. Always the price is printed BIG on the banners. $2.99/month, $1.99/month, $0.99/month. What the hell! Web hosting is so cheap nowadays! BEWARE! This is one of the tricks. Did you see the asterisk mark beside? Look carefully and you will notice the cheap price come with a long contract period. Albeit it remains cheap, but are you prepared to commit?

Trick 3: 24/7 Customer Support

Customer support is always our concern in picking a web host because they are the people we turn to whenever something goes wrong with our website. Thus 24/7 support is important. Apparently web host providers are aware of this too, thus 24/7 support is a must-have feature in their promotions banners. 24/7 means 24 hours, 7 days a week but have you ever thought that the support might not be 24/7? Who knows? Since most of us do not call them in the midnight. We will only find out the truth when we need them in the late night. Imagine the pain you are going to have that time.

In another hand, some hosting providers are so unethical that they provide fake contact information. From their website their support seems to be very comprehensive with telephone support, email support, live chat and etc. However when you give them a call, you realize that the number is not in service at all! But that is too late as you have stuck with them already.

Trick 4: Fake Testimonial

Besides, fake testimonials are possible. You will see there are many positive reviews in their website praising their service. Do not get your head in easily with the testimonials. It is possible that they are from their staff or friends or even worse, the web host makes it up. However, testimonials can remain true. The point is how you justify the trustworthiness.

Trick 5: Free Marketing/Advertisement Credit

$25 Google Adwords Credit, $25 Yahoo Credit, $50 MIVA Credit and other online advertising credits look like a bargain for your website because with the credit you can promote your website for free. The free credit does sound like free money doesn’t it? For your information you need to sign up a new account in order to claim the free credit. The credit is not applicable on existing account like mine! I was a victim then when I was deciding which host to go with between 2; 1 with the free credit and the other one without. Of cause I chose the first one and found out later the credit was useless. I seriously felt cheated. Although I understand what I paid is for the hosting service, not the free credit but somehow the free credit has involved in my decision making that makes me pi**ed off later on.

Who am I to blame? Myself, for not checking clearly.

Trick 6: 99.9% Uptime Guarantee

In order to boost the confidence of potential customers, web host providers tend to guarantee their uptime. They guarantee their hosting to be up for at least 99.9%.of the time. Well, there are total 2 catches here.

First, what is a 99.9% uptime? From a consumer point of view, that means my website will be up for 99.9% of the time right? Wrong! In fact the 99.9% uptime means the web host will be up for 99.9% only, not your website. I hope you can see the difference there. In order for the world to access our website, the server that stores the website must be up; the internet connections connected to the server must be up; your website is tuned correctly and is operating normally and etc. A web host only does their job by providing reliable hosting server. They will not hold responsible on your downtime due to internet connections or other factors.

Second, what does it mean by guarantee? Is it a verbal guarantee or a black and white guarantee? Some web host shout to have 99.9% uptime guarantee. Are they for real or for show? For your information, if a web host guarantees their uptime for show, they will only “promise” this and that but do not dare to put it in black and white. Get rid of this kind of web host! They lie! While those who really keep their words will state this guarantee in their Term of Service document clearly together with the compensations if they fail to meet it. That, I call guarantee.

These are some of the popular marketing tricks used by web host providers. Surprised to learn about them? In fact I do not really think a web host is that wrong (except for the fake contact information) for the above mentioned tricks. Because some hosts are really working hard to provide good service. The tricks are meant to attract attention and meant no harm to users. Furthermore they are not really hiding the truth and you can actually learn about it if you take a more careful look at the Term of Service document. However, these are the marketing tricks you should beware of! The marketing words sound promising but the truth might be otherwise. Therefore if we really fall into the tricks and are angry to find out later, we have only ourselves to blame.

Please do not lose confident on web hosting providers if you feel uneasy after reading this article. Bandwidth And Data Transfer – Which is Which?

Too often web hosts talk about bandwidth and data transfer in the same breath but truth be known they are different although very closely related. Bandwidth is how much data can be transferred at a time and data transfer is how much data is being transferred.

Think of it this way. If bandwidth were a bridge, then the bigger the bridge is the more vehicles can pass through it. While data transfer is the number of vehicles allowed on the bridge in say a month. In essence, data transfer is the consumption of bandwidth.

How It Affects Your Site

The less bandwidth you have, the slower your site takes to load regardless of the visitor’s connection type. If you have more visitors, some of them will have to wait their turn. The least data transfer you have, the more often you’ll find your site unavailable because you’re reached the maximum allowed until a new month rolls by or you upgrade your account.

Determining Your Requirements

Usually when a host talks about bandwidth, they are referring to your transfer. So you need to figure out what is sufficient for your site to function. You’ll need to gather some information; fairly easy if you already have a site. Most of this information is available from your traffic history. If you don’t have an existing site, provide an optimistic estimate if you intend to heavily promote the site. Then get ready for some math.

Find out the daily averages of: -

• Number of visitors / expected number of visitors
• Page size including the graphics of the page
• Page views / expected pages viewed by each visitor

Then, multiply them as follows:

Visitors x Page size x Page views x 30 days = Monthly Website Transfer

You should also throw in a small margin or error there to take into account email traffic and your own uploads to the server. If you offer downloads, then you should add the following:

Average/Expected downloads x File Size x 30 days = Monthly Download Transfer

Unlimited Plans

Bandwidth is very expensive. All hosts are limited by their own allocations. Thinking back to the bridge. What happens is each visitor to your site will be given a smaller lane to transfer the data, creating many tiny lanes therefore “unlimited”. The more visitors you have the smaller each lane will be, which makes each visitor wait for the page to load.

More often than not there is little choice over your bandwidth as your host controls this. Some hosts may limit the number of simultaneous connections so in affect slowing down your site and refusing some visitors. This is called throttling. If you’re concerned about this, you should ask the host how they control bandwidth usage or purchase a package with more data transfer. Reducing Transfers

On the other hand, you can reduce your transfer amount by building simpler, more efficient websites and optimizing your graphics. Refrain from fancy flash presentations or streaming audio. Use CSS, call JavaScript externally instead of embedding in every page. Remove unwanted tags, white space and comments.
Limit your META tags to those absolutely necessary. Having too many keywords is not search engine friendly. Besides many search engines will only review the first few and ignore the rest.

Another good idea is to cache your website but you might want to set an expiry date in the HTTP headers so the browser will refresh the content after a certain time. Use mod-gzip. It could save you as much as 40% of your bandwidth. Out of control robots can also suck down your bandwidth like a black hole. So use robots.txt to keep spiders in check.
