40K Apocalypse at SOGCON

2015-07-15T20:46:00.001+08:00

It had been awhile since I last update this blog. Still alive and enjoying the hobby.

Scroll down for the Apocalypse pictures if you don't want to read my rant.

Many things happened in life since I last quit my previous job in 2014 to take a break from work and rethink life.
Got a job offer early this year from a company that I worked with before I quit my previous job in 2014.
Taking up the job offer in a different company but same industry was exciting as I would be doing something different and opportunities to learn and gain more experience. After 3 months into the job I decided to leave... Many factors contributed to my decision, every little things add up... but the main one was human relations.
Few weeks in the new job, I felt that the culture was quite strange... I'm an easy going and agreeable person to work with but I couldn't understand some of the people I work with and their ethics. I can only guess that they felt threaten by me joining the company. I decided to give myself some time before making any decisions, thinking that being a new guy in the new work environment I just had to adjust and adapt with time. The final straw was an incident (which I'm involved) happening when working onsite. This incident accelerated my decision to leave and not giving it more time so that it would work out.
Initially I thought that joining the new company would be something that give me a clear goal and future in life, but I'm filled with more self doubt than before I started. Now I'm just going to focus on getting a 40k army fully painted (at least 1850 points) and finding another job thereafter.

Anyway enough with my ranting/musing. Here are the pictures for the 40K Apocalypse the gaming group played in a recent gaming convention.

More pictures can be found in the gaming group blog.

Shield of Baal - Campaign Week 2 Battle for Lysios (Iron Hands - Clan Raukaan 1850)

2014-12-12T20:17:00.000+08:00

2nd game for the Shield of Baal week 2 campaign. I brought my Iron hands (Clan Raukaan) again. My opponent would be Titan Games store manager - Rico again as gaming buddy Jaeroler was coming back to 40K with his IG Astra Militarum and Ray was playing against him.

Pardon the unpainted Iron hands for the 2nd straight week, working on it... The amazing painted nids are painted by Rico (Golden Daemon winner).

Iron Hands - Clan Raukaan List

overview of Tyranid turn 5.

The culexus assassin charged the exocrine and was wounded once by the bio plasma, with only 1 wound remaining from his earlier battles, a 4++ roll was needed to make it into close combat. Yes... and his lightning reflexes were not quick enough to dodge the bio plasma burst.

Overview of Iron Hands turn 5.

In Tyranids turn 5, Clan Raukaan only have the captain and a storm talon on the table. Storm talon was promptly shot off the skies. Iron hands Captain stayed strong and continue the close combat with the hive guard and malanthrope in challenge.

Clan Raukaan captain last stand! Slaying the Malathrope in the last turn - 5

In Iron hands turn 5, only the captain was standing and he finally managed to best the malathrope in challenge cutting it down but stayed in combat against the single hive guard.

A 2 was rolled and the game ended at turn 5.

Victory points (kill points)
15: 3

Victory to the Tyranids!

Week 2 current score

Conclusion

The 2nd game in the campaign where I had only a model left. I think this game went down hill the moment the spore mines came in and stunned/shaken the Iron hands vehicles effectively negating the firepower of the Iron hands. My opponent dice rolls were also on fire as he made 5+, 6+ cover saves like there were 2+s and tyrannocyte deleting anything that came close. While I kept failing my to wound rolls for almost everything - culexus, melta gun, axe of medusa just to name a few lol and don't get me started on armour saves. I also think I need to focus fire on taking out 1 big bug at a time instead of splitting my fire here and there and allowing the nids to keep shooting with their bio weapons.

Shield of Baal Campaign 7th edition game (Iron Hands - Clan Raukaan VS Tyranids) 1850

2014-12-06T05:01:00.000+08:00

The gaming group is currently playing the Shield of Baal campaign with sponsor from Titan Games LGS. Ray the planner for the campaign came up with the idea to expand the campaign armies involved to all Imperium armies to incorporate more gamers as not all 40K gamers have ~~Imperial guard~~ Astra Militarum/~~Sisters of battle~~ Adepta Sororitas/Blood Angels.

My first game of the campaign is against Titan Games LGS store manager Rico who restarted his Tyranids army after a hiatus. Had been awhile since I last wrote a slightly detailed battle report.

Contributing to the Imperium war effort on planet Vitria, Clan Raukaan sent a small detachment together with attached Imperial knight house Ærthegn to eliminate the Tyranids menace infesting the same city ruins that saw the defeat of Astra Militarum vostroyans in an early battle.

Iron hands - Clan Raukaan list

Captain with artificer, gorgon chain and axe of medusa

Tac sqd in Rhino

Tac sqd in razorback with las-plasma

Tac sqd in drop pod

Death storm drop pod x2

Mortis pattern contemptor with kheres assault cannon

Rapier laser destroyer x2

storm talon with sky hammer

storm talon with typhoon missile launcher

Castigator knight titan

Tyranids - Hive fleet Medusa list

Hive tyrant with devourers x 2

Carnifex with devourers x 3

Tyrannocyte x 3

zoanthrope x 2

Malathrope

Hive guard x 3

harpy x 2

ripper swarms x 2

Deployment

Clan Raukaan deployed the following:

Contemptor mortis dreadnought
Rhino with tactical squads
Razerback with tactical squads
Rapier laser destroyers

Tyranids deployed the following:

Zoans
Malathrope
Hive guards
Hive tyrants

Crazyrat random musing:

If you are wondering why I did not deploy the castigator knight titan, I forgotten about it lol... as the game already started we decided to be fair to place the knight titan in reserve.

Turn 1

No night fight

Tyranids seize fail

Clan Raukaan call down the death storm drop pods to commence area saturation fire

The death storm drop pods 12" whirlwind missiles either scatter off table or were unable to deal any significant wounds to the tyranids, Final damage dealing 1 wound to a hive tyrant.

The hive tyrant swoop high in the sky landing on a high ruin using all bio-morphs and psychic attacks on the drop site

VP:

0:3 (Iron hands leading)

Turn 2

Clan Raukaan main force arrive to capture the objectives

Storm talon join the battle

Clan Raukaan captain and tac squad arrived via drop pod to capture objective 1

Carnifex and tyrannocyte drop into Iron hands fire base

Both factions fighting over objective 1

Clan Raukaan warlord with tac sqd charged the carnifex

Razorback wreck by the carnifex shooting its weaker rear armour

Flying MC getting into firing positions

Tyrannocyte prepare to unload the payload its carrying

VP:

3:5 (Iron hands leading)

Turn 3

Flying MC surrounded the storm talon

Flying MC trying to claim objective 6

Mishap rippers

Zoanthropes, Malathropes & hive guards taking potshots at the Iron hands

VP:

5:7 (Iron hands leading)

Turn 4

Harpy toxic bomb couldn't penetrate the knight titan

Both rhino and razorback wreck by tyranids shooting

Clan Raukaan warlord & tac sqd just inches away from a wounded hive tyrant (warlord)

Another view of the game changer mistake by Iron hands

The rapier unit survived the tyranids shooting

VP:

9:10 (Iron hands leading)

Crazyrat random musing

I think this was the crucial turn where I made the mistake of firing my rapid fire bolters into the hive tyrant (warlord) and not able to charge it (sky shield picture above). If I just shot the pistols or not shooting at all, I could charge in with my warlord unit and kill it for slay the warlord as it only had a wound left and if I couldn't kill it, being stuck in combat I could prevent my warlord from getting shot at and subsequently killed by the carnifex devourers. The hive tyrant dying would also maybe prevent my tactical squad guarding objective 6 to survive longer and prevent tyranids to claim objective 6 for VP.

Turn 5

Castigator charged the rippers to prevent them from claiming objective 2

Hive tyrant and harpy unloaded on the Iron hands claiming objective 6

Carnifex devourers feast on the rapier and crew

Tyrannocytes and carnifex made short work of the Iron hand warlord and tac sqd guarding objective 1

VP:

12:11 (nids leading)

Turn 6

House Ærthegn castigator charge the malanthrope killing it in a flurry of attacks

The carnifex unleashed all its bio weapons onto the damaged drop pod.

We decided to stop the game at turn 6 as the winner for the game is clear. Clan Raukaan only had the castigator knight titan left.

Final VP

Tyranids : Clan Raukaan

16 : 12

Winner Tyranids - Hive fleet Medusa!

The knight castigator turned around and saw the last of Clan Raukaan small detachment decimated under the tyranids onslaught... Without warning a series of explosion on the left of the knight rocked the cockpit with intense force, system alert alarms filled the cockpit and fault readings streamed into the pilot HUD. Auspex reading shows tyranids movement and fire coming from both the west and north in a pincer attack. Multiple bright beams pierce through the air with a single beam hitting the knight castigator bolt cannon almost shredding it off. Sensing a wave of incoming fire coming from the north the pilot brought the ion shield back on-line in-time to intercept further bio-missiles from the north. With a thought, the house Ærthegn pilot sent a coded transmission and routed power to the legs of the knight titan accelerating from the tyranids in the immediate vicinity.

SM (Raptors) vs SW + IG 1850 Dead lock 7th

2014-10-26T18:19:00.000+08:00

A grudge rematch against Krom again for the humiliating defeat in the last game using my HH Iron warriors. This time I would be using SM with raptors chapter tactics with some FW units thrown in.

No detail turn by turn battle report just a short summary with some pictures.

Wolves unleash!

SM storm talons got shot down trying to contest

SM static gunline

SW stormfang (proxy) zoom in for the kill!

The game ended at turn 5 with the following victory points:

SM : SW+ IG

9 : 12

SW+IG victory!

A close game and could be a draw if we did not mixed up some rules like going to ground units cannot claim objectives. Krom had chose to go to ground with his IG troops near objective #4, I would have flat out my land speeder to capture objective #4 and get 2 victory points as I have 2 capture objective #4 cards on hand. Anyway we learn as we play more games.
Luck was also on Krom side as his opening hand cards were mostly objectives in his deployment zone and he promptly got 4 points in first turn while half my cards were to capture objectives on Krom deployment zone LOL. Till next time grudge match again!

40K Apocalypse 14k battle SM + SM VS Eldar + DA

2014-10-15T22:48:00.000+08:00

Played another Apocalypse game organize by the gaming group. Due to personal obligations we only have 4 players turning up in the end and decided to go with 2 vs 2.

7000k a side with a total 14k point battle.

Battle: Exterminatus !

SM VS DA/Eldar

More pictures and detail turn by turn report can be found in the gaming group website - Anything but ones blog spot.

http://anythingbutones.blogspot.sg/2014/10/14000-points-apocalypse-abo-style.html

Some of the pictures I took during the game:

Altansar craft world

Dark Angels

The game commence

Mass fire fight & combat

The Eldar/DA capturing the no man's land objective

SM drop pods reinforce the deployment zone

DA terminators DS to target the SM forward unit

DA terminators DS into SM deployment zone

SM counter attack!

DA terminators with librarian charge the Castigator

DA terminator survived the Castigator assault

Castigator Knight titan Close combat with DA terminator

Castigator knight titan was subsequently charged by DA imperial knight titan and with only 1 hull point left, the castigator exploded from the imperial knight hammer of wrath attack. The apocalyptic explosion caught the imperial knight titan killing it instantly which trigger another apocalyptic explosion! Miraculously the DA terminator (pic above) survived both the apocalyptic explosions!!!

Single Stern guard capturing Eldar/DA objective

After around 6 hours of gaming, we ended the game at turn 3.

Strategic victory points
SM : DA/Eldar
21 : 20

SM victory !

Was a close game and SM won by 1 SVP.
Looking forward to the next apocalypse game and higher points apocalypse battle - more carnage!

Iron warriors (HH) VS Space wolves + Ultra Marines (7th) 1850

2014-09-15T01:45:00.000+08:00

Had a game of 40k with gaming buddy Krom for the first time since 2012. Didn't get to play a game against him as I was really busy with work for the past years and he went to the US for phd studies.

I will be trying out the Horus heresy Iron warriors list. Krom will be using the 7th edition Space Wolves book with a unit of ultra marines (bikers) allies.

We played the eternal war mission: Emperor's will (rolled) since Krom had not been playing 40k for years and not familiar with the 7th edition rules.

Deployment: Long table edge (rolled) but we decided to go with dawn of war deployment for less hassle. If we had go with long table edge, it will be to my advantage as my shooty army will have more turns to shoot before the SW can reach my lines.

Arjac and terminators drop pod in to IW lines on turn 1

With night fight in play on turn 1, around 1/3 of IW shooting was saved by cover saves. Didn't managed to neutralised any threats.
All the Space wolves units rush head long into the IW lines, Arjac and terminators were only able to glance some of IW vehicles. No unit was destroyed in either turn 1.

Storm Fang proxy (Valkyrie) zoom in to deliver death

Turn 2

IW concentrated all their shooting on Arjac and terminators but the Anvil of Fenris just wont die and a single terminator survived.
Most of the Space Wolves and Ultra marines (bikers) were just within charge range of IW units.

Turn 3 for IW was their last ditch effort to kill the most important threats, Arjac was finally gunned down but the bikers and thunder wolves cavalry were still alive and ready to charge. SW wasted no time in charging with all their CC units. The storm fang drop off a unit of blood claws and their 39 attacks was enough to wreck the predators. The storm fang was very deadly with its arsenal of weapons and versatility, but lousy rolls by Krom kept the IW vehicles alive for a little longer.
The Valkyrie proxy was used as he just received his storm fang from the store on the day of game.

Iron warriors charged by Wolf lord on Thunder wolf on turn 7

With SW charging into close combat on turn 3, it was a matter of time before the thunder wolves cavalry destroy everything. The bikers wiped the Rapier squad in 3 phase of CC with lousy rolls on both sides and proceed to wreck the basilisk and flat out back to their deployment zone to cap the objective. The thunder wolves cavalry unit was destroyed in the end leaving only the wolf lord to mop up the rest of the stragglers.

Game end on turn 7 with SW: 17 VP to IW(HH): 7 VP.

I only have 2 models left at the end of game.

End game thoughts:
Another defeat! though not the usual tabled game but its either I sux real bad or the 30k HH list cant compete with 40k list. Scheduling another game with Krom before he goes back, this time I'm going to use a 40k book and see how it goes.

7th Edition Apocalypse Game

2014-06-07T23:35:00.001+08:00

Had my first Apocalypse game after 11-12 years in the hobby. Got the chance to organize the game with ABO gaming buddies.

Using 7th edition 40K rules. The game was planned to be played at around 10k points per side with 6 players. Due to Nurgle striking 2 players, we had to play the game with 6.5k points per side with 4 players.

Got to thank Titan Games LGS for hosting the game.

Imperium

IG - 4k

Flesh tearers (BA) - 2.5k

Chaos

IG - 4k

Alpha Legion (30k) - 2.5k

The game was a blast. Never had such crazy fun in 40k for awhile, with super heavies failing spectacularly, daemons summoning left and right, rampaging knight titans, mass air battles between the IG. The action never stop.. well before turn 4. I will let Jaeroler post the more detail post on the game. Here are some pictures..

Alpha Legion Terminators strike at the heart of the Imperium lines

Chaos IG Valkyries zooming into Imperium defences

Rampaging Imperium Knight Titan in Chaos lines

The battle field at turn 3

Fell glaive brace for knight titan charge!

The heat blast from the dread claw was too much for tzeentch herald and blood letter.

Armillus Dynat (proxy SOH) surrounded by Bro Corbulo, Gabriel Seth and Flesh Tearers and the meat grinder dreadnought...

Imperium and Chaos Knight titans face off

Supreme Commander "Kim" last moments

Conclusion
We ended the game at turn 4 with the final result concluded at turn 6:
Imperium : Chaos (points)
17 - 12
Imperium Victory.

The 3 knight titans brought by the Imperium side were unstoppable, rampaging through the battlefield killing whatever they came into contact. Future Apoc games will surely bring counter measures to kill off those knight titans before they can deal devastating damage in melee.

Some nonsensical pictures below..

*Apoc game is go! Titan Games LGS had gave the OK.

Background
9111014.M41 - First report of the hive world Quintus III erupting in planet wide rebellion. Local PDF sway by the speeches and propaganda of the rebel leader join up with the masses to overthrow Imperium rule. The Adeptus Arbites were quickly overwhelm in many locations, consolidating in the planetary governor hive spire. The only Imperium force capable of stopping the rebellion at that time were the Necro 8th Imperial Guard with their knight allies stationed on the planet on a rearm & refit operation. Current status of the Necro 8th Imperial guard is unknown. Planetary governor Hartitcus sent out an astropathic plea asking for help to crush the rebellion.

9132014.M41 - Craftworld Altansar Farseers divining into the future saw that doom would strike Altansar and all paths point to the mon-keigh world of Quintus III. The Farseers & Autarchs assembled a war council and decided that a strike force consisting of engines of Vaul and titan were needed to exterminate all mon-keigh presence on the planet.

9139014.M41 - Brother Corbulo on-board the Flesh Tearers battle barge - Victus divine that planet wide rebellion was happening on Quintus III. Chapter master Gabriel Seth responds immediately, changing course of the battle barge and heading straight for Quintus III system.

9140014.M41 - Last transmission received from the planet reported blue azure Space Marines with hydra iconography moving between the rebels. Directing the rebels attacks on key installations on the planet.

9144014.M41 - Dark Angels for unknown reason was operating near the region. On-board their battle barge - Ultimate Vengeance they received the astropath last transmission. Translating the message concluded that the Alpha legion was on the hive world. The presence and chance to capture traitor marines cannot be allowed to slip. Wasting no time the Dark Angels plot course for Quintus III.

9156014.M41 - The Dark angels and Flesh tearers arrived in the system of Quintus III. No rebel fleet was detected in scanner range. Arriving in the orbit of the planet, resistance from surface was non-existence but the Adeptus Astartes battle barges detected large concentration of rebels dug in on the outskirts of the principle hive. Both Adeptus Astartes chapters prepare to launch ground invasion...

Sons of Horus Test model

2014-01-13T02:11:00.001+08:00

9 months since I last update this blog... Really busy at work in 2013... working crazy hours almost daily and spent most of my spare time sleeping. 2013 seems to pass in a flash and I'm not really sure what I had done for the whole year...

Anyway I did had some time to continue enjoying the hobby (rarely) except painting. Took a break from work recently and did some painting - A MK4 Power armour from Forge world that I bought last year.

Some pictures and painting steps:

Model primed with Mr Hobby Resin surface primer.
Base coat GW new layer paint - Kabalite green.
Next painted the second layer with GW layer paint - Sybarite green.
Eyes and back pack strap painted with GW layer paint - Ushabti bone.

"Washing" the model

Washed the whole model using Army painter - Strong tone. The strong tone is exactly like GW delvan mud, is much cheaper with larger quantity and comes in dropper bottle. I liked it alot and will continue using it.

Before weathering

Bolter painted with GW paint - ~~Regal Blue~~ Necron Abyss.

Power pack and metal parts painted with P3 - pig iron, vallejo air - rust, copper & GW- dwarf bronze.

After weathering

Tried GW new dry paint, it is a very interesting concept & type of paint. It's like painting "dried jelly" but the effects are very similar to using pigments. Will be buying more dry paints to try out.

The above picture was painted (dry brush) with the following dry paint:

Etherium blue on the base and the heels of the power armour.

Tyrant skull on the armour for the dusty weathered look.

Lastly picture of the make shift painting table..

The tools

Satisfied with how the test model turned out and now to paint the rest of my Sons of Horus army.

Had been awhile since I updated this blog. Really busy with work... but still manage to get some gaming time.

Though the first model I bought was a Chaos marine with lascannon. The first army that I bought was 3rd edition Tau. Subsequently sold the army (Tau) after a few games as I had no fun with it partially due to 3rd edition rule (sweeping advance). Once anything reach my firing lines, its time to pack up. Now with a new book I am back to the "Greater good".

Go over to http://anythingbutones.blogspot.sg/2012/12/batrep-1750-tyranids-vs-chaos-space.html for the battle report.

I BLAME THE DICE!

2012-09-20T23:53:00.000+08:00

Back to blogging after a 9 month hiatus. Busy with work... Playing mostly Fantasy, Malifaux, L5R CCG during these period.

with the release of 40k 6th edition, the gaming group is back to playing 40k. Had my first game last week against jaeroler IG with my dark eldar. I think we played the night fight rule wrongly (night fight for whole game) and my army was hiding in the cover of darkness shooting the grunts easily with night version. won the game (crusade) 7-5, if we had played the night fight rule properly I could have lost, even tabled as the night fight cover save really help my army.

Anyway with the impending release of new chaos marine codex (my first 40k army) I can go back to playing my favourite army.

With some spare cash I decided to buy something from forge world that I always wanted for many years.

Painted Terrain Update

2011-12-07T23:20:00.001+08:00

Back to updating the blog after a long hiatus. Besides actively seeking employment during these period and finding out the answer to number of basketballs that can fit in a room... I also did some painting. A piece of terrain I bought many years ago, Amera block ruin.

The terrain can be use for 40k and Malifaux which the gaming group had been playing alot recently.

One of the sides

I "stip" the surfaces of the ruin using some left over paint from house painting to create texture on the smooth plastic surface, making dry brushing easier later. After, I primed the whole building black with some cheap flat black paint. The base coat was painted with GW Adeptus Battle grey and later drybrush with Vallejo Model Color Light grey. Next was spraying the terrain with Gunze Sangyo Mr Super Clear flat and dusting the whole surface with Mig pigment concrete and sealed with Mig pigment fixer.

How to "stip" the surface to create concrete like texture using house paint. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP6_aFyM5Q0&feature=channel_video_title

I textured the floors using Coat d'arms Brushscape dark earth which is a kind of texture paint. The beams were plastic frames cut out from sprues. The floors were kind of weak even when splash with a large amount of plastic glue, so I decided to strengthen the floors using the plastic frames. Metal miniatures won't have problems standing on it.

The beams were painted with GW dwarf bronze and wash with diluted Vallejo Game Color Verdigris.
The ground were dark brown (Coat d'arms Brushscape dark earth) dry-brush with Vallejo Game Color Ghost grey, spray with Gunze Sangyo Mr Super Clear flat, lastly dust with Mig pigment concrete and sealed with Mig pigment fixer.

The other side

Free hand and decal

I tried free hand some heretical graffiti to make the terrain more interesting using Vallejo Model color flat red. Created the streaks to make it look like some heretic wrote it with his mutilated bloody hands.

The chaos sign is from a CSM decal. Using Gunze Sangyo Mr Mark softer - a decal solution, the decal adhere well to the surface did not gave any problems and looks perfect.

Next I would be painting the Dreadstone Blight or my Dark Eldar army or my Malifaux crew... so many stuffs to paint lol...

TK vs OK 2.5k Pitched Battle

2011-10-15T22:58:00.000+08:00

Had my ~~first~~ second game against 8th edition Ogre Kingdoms during the weekend. Playing against Beardy Ones's "Ogres rush" Ogre kingdoms.
First game was against Krom's "Fatties" OK. Mission was blood and glory and TK lost on OK turn 4, when TK fortitude reduced to 3. No battle report as I can't remember much of the game...

Mission: Pitched Battle (rolled)
TK magic: Light and Nek
OK magic: Death and Maw
OK went first

Deployment

*Note there is a sabretusk that I forgotten to create in Battle chronicler. Its deployed to the right the Iron Guts.

OK turn 1

Movement

Everything move foward except scrap launcher.

Magic

Soul blight cast on Skeleton warriors unit.
Caress of Laniph cast on liche priest and inflict 1 wound.

Shoot

Scrap Laucher was on target and kill 17 skeleton warriors.

TK turn 1

Movement

Ushabtis, N.sphinx move to forest(normal). Chariot move forward on flank.

Magic

Burning gaze and light of death went off and kill 1 man eater and wounding another. Man eaters pass panic...

Shoot

Archers fluff and SSC scatter 10" off Gnoblars.

OK turn 2

Movement

Mourn Fang charge chariots and suffer a dangerous terrain wound.
Maneaters charge SSC.
Sabretusk move in front of Ushabtis.
Everything move forward except scrap launcher.

Magic

Bjuna on Hierophant dispelled.
Soul blight scrolled by dispel scroll.

Shoot

Scarp Launcher was on target again... killing 14 skeleton warriors.

Close combat

Maneaters easily wiped the SSC and overran forward.
Mournfang rolled 12 impact hits on 4D3... inflicting 11 wounds on chariot. Chariot crumple. Mournfang reform to face N.sphinx.

TK turn 2

Movement

Ushabtis charge sabretusk.
Skeleton warriors with Tomb king charge Ogres horde and fail charge on rolls of 1,1...
N.sphinx charge Ogres horde and fail charge on rolls of 1,1,3...
Tomb guards and Necro knights charge Gnoblars.
Archers swift reform to face Maneaters.

Magic

Light of death fail to cast on rolls of 1,2...
Banishment dispelled.
Burning Gaze kill 1 man eater, Man eaters pass panic.
Big smiting went off and buff ushabtis, archers, skeleton warriors.

Shoot

Archers kill 1 Man Eater. Man eaters pass panic...

Close combat

Ushabtis make short work of sabretusks and reform to face Iron guts.
Gnoblars manage to kill 2 tomb guards.
Necro knights and Tomb guards kill a total of 12 gnoblars. Steadfast gnoblars pass break test.

OK turn 3

Movement

Ogres horde charge skeleton warriors.
Mourn fang charge N.sphinx.
Iron guts charge ushabtis.
Man eaters charge casket of souls.
Scrap launcher move forward.

Magic

+1 T cast on Iron guts.

Shoot

Scrap Launcher kill 5-6 archers.

Close combat

Ushabtis inflict 7 wounds on Iron guts, Iron guts inflict 10 wounds. Ushabti crumple from CR. Iron guts reform to face the combat in centre.
2 surviving Man eaters thrash the casket and was caught in the explosion. Explosion kill 1 Man eater and wound another. Man eater overran into archers.(*shown in last picture)
Ogre horde kill 30 skeleton warriors!!??! and bruiser wound Tomb king in challenge. TK side inflict 5 miserable unsaved wounds and lost combat by a whopping 28!!! All skeleton warriors crumple, leaving the Tomb king forever alone :(
Necro knights and Tomb guards kill enough gnoblars (bully gnoblars!) to break stead fast and make the little creatures flee. Necro knights reform to face mourn fang and TG reform to face ogre horde.
Mourn fang smash the N.sphinx before it could strike, overran forward towards archers.

TK turn 3

Movement

Necro knights charge rear of mourn fang.
TG charge flank of Ogre horde.

Magic

Desiccation cast on Mournfang.

Iron guts move forward towards centre.

Magic

Soul blight cast on Necro knights.

Close combat

Ogre horde easily wipe out the tomb guards and Tomb king.
Scrap launcher impact hits kill 2 Necro knights... Last Necro knight was easily destroyed.

We decided to call it here as I only have a unit of archers left and Hierophant dead.

Victory to Ogres!

I BLAME THE DICE!!! they shall BURN!!! failing charge on double ones and swift stride?!?! wtfbbq? Wind of magic averaging 5 per TK turn, "Banner of sorcery" 1-2 PD all turns except once creating 3 PD and channeling 0 PD through out the game... Fail to cast Light of death (bound lvl 5) on 2 dice?!?!

I think my strategy was good, tar-pitting the Ogre horde with skeleton warriors and N.sphinx to assassinate mage/bsb/gen. The SW and N.sphinx will be supported by flanking ushabtis. Ushabtis will kill the dog and overran to fight another free CC round.
Tomb guards + necro knights will get stuck in combat for at least a round due to steadfast gnoblars but will likely win combat on OK turn, allowing them to reform and charge the ogre horde on my turn.
Epic fluff rolling lost me the game... mostly. I did made some bad mistakes by moving the chariots forward too much and feeding them to mournfang and not deploying to counter the scout man eaters which wreck havoc in my back lines. Destroying all my support units.

Time to rewrite the list. Tomb guards, Ushabtis (too bad I love the models) are going out.

TK vs DE 2.5k batrep Battle for the Pass

2011-10-08T23:29:00.000+08:00

Wooot! Another weekend another Fantasy game. Played 2 games in 1 day. Once against 8th edition OK another against DE. The OK battle report will come later as I don't have the OK player - Krom's OK list (cant create the units in battle chronicler).

Using my TK against Jaeroler DE. He wrote a "Funky" list and wanted to test it. I'm using the same list in the previous game.

Mission: Battle for the Pass (rolled)

TK went 1st (roll off)

Deployment

Cold one knights charge skeleton warriors unit, suffering 2 wounds from dangerous terrain.
Hydra charge skeleton warriors unit, suffering 1 wound from dangerous terrrain.
Spear Elves 2, Cauldron and RxB1* move forward to the melee battle. (*not shown in picture)
Shades continue fleeing.

Magic

DE lvl 4 sorcerer IF miasma on 4D6 and rolled power drain for miscast. Losing 3 wizard levels and miasma, enfeebling and mindrazor and remaining power dice.
5+ ward saves from cauldron given to CoK unit.

Shoot

Repeater crossbows dealt 1 wound to TK chariot.
Cold one chariot 2 fluff shooting.

Close Combat

N.Sphinx fluff 4 normal attacks but heroic killing blow the chariot, reforming to face the Cold one knights.
The combine DE units kill 24 skeleton warriors, in return Skeletons and Tomb king kill 6 spears elves and wounded the hydra once. Losing combat by 17, 40 skeletons + Tomb king remain.

TK turn 3

Movement

Ushabtis charge the flank of Cold one knights, rolling just high enough. Suffering 3 wounds from dangerous terrain.
Tomb guards charge the front of cold one knights.
N.sphinx charge the rear of Cold one knights.

Magic

Total magic domination as DE sorcerer was weaken to lvl 1 in previous turn miscast.
Boosted protection and smiting went off. Recoving 6 skeleton warriors,1 ushabti and 1 chariot wound.

Shoot

SSC was on target and panic off Spear elves unit 2. (poor LD rolling by Jaeroler, rolling 12 and 10 with inspiring presence and hold your ground)
Chariots with smiting shot the repeater crossbows (RxB1) and panic them off as well.

Close Combat

DE units kill a total of 8 skeleton warriors and 2 tomb guards.
N.sphinx, ushabtis and tomb guards wiped the CoK unit including the general.
Hydra took 2 wounds from skeleton warriors.
5-6 spear elves die to tomb king and skeletons.
All 3 DE units needing insane courage to stay in combat broke and flee.

DE turn 3

Jaeroler conceded the game at this point as the bulk of his army was dead.

Victory to Tomb Kings!

Click link below for end game conclusion.

Luck was definitely on my side in this game. All my magic phase I rolled high for winds of magic and "banner of sorcery", getting 9-12 PD all magic phase.
N.sphinx getting a heroic killing blow on the chariot in DE turn was unexpected, I just wanted to prevent the DE chariot from getting in close combat. Pulling off a HKB allowed the N.sphinx to rear charge the CoK, subsequently murdering all the heavy armour knights.
The SSC hitting Spear elves unit 2 and panic them off with -1 LD prevented the DE spears from "rescuing" the encircled 3 DE units.

My opponent was plagued with "epic" dice rolls in all crucial phases. Getting miscast on miasma and losing 3 wizard levels and 3 important spells were a big hit to the DE side. Reducing their effectiveness in close combat and allowing me to dominate the latter magic phases, buffing my troops wholesale.
The Spear elves unit 2 failing panic with BSB reroll and general LD was also crucial as that unit could help in the battle.

Knowing my opponent's army, I knew he needed to engage me in close combat. With that I deployed defensively just behind the river as by default rivers negate steadfast and rank bonus, giving me some advantage once his units are in close combat.
I also setup counter chargers (tomb guards & ushabtis) to help my anvil/chariots in close combat once melee starts.
Place my Hierophant and liche priest right in the centre back of my deployment zone, allowing their buffs to reach almost all units.
The warmachines were placed right behind my anvil as once my 80 skeleton warriors crumple all will be lost and there would be no use for the warmachines.

Though I win early in this game, learnt something important playing TK. Never scatter units too far away from the Hierophant and light liche priest.

Victory to the HE! (pansies)

With only a casket left on turn 5, there is no way I could win this. Conceded the game on TK turn 5. Looking back I realized my battle lines were in a complete mess when I was doing the batrep, no wonder I got massacred badly. Forgetting my own rules and lousy dice rolls (0 IF!!!) don't help either. Units leaving/separating from the buff zone of hierophant, units doing their own solo charge or moving around aimlessly/wrongly out of charge arc of enemy.

TK vs HE pictures

2011-10-02T00:26:00.000+08:00

Pictures taken from a game with long time gaming buddy Enrgie over at a newly open LGS - Battle Bunker.

Had not played against Enrgie for quite awhile. Spent almost the whole day playing and talking/discussing about Warhammer fantasy, who can guess there are so much to talk about Warhammer Fantasy lol.

After Pansies turn 1

50 wet lions down to 42...

1st turn IF dwellers on BRAVE skeleton warriors! (37 died)

VP difference: 1106

Victory to Dark Elves!

My strategy was sound, using the skeleton warriors as "anvil" and Ushabtis as the "hammer". The Necrosphinx and chariots will spearhead the assault hopefully creating confusion in enemy lines and later swing back to act as "hammer". The entombed units will either go mage hunting/disrupt enemy lines or come from the rear to support the "anvil".

The game was going my way up till turn 3. The game start to go downhill for me when I couldn't finished off the 2 wound hydra (H2) with light of death (hydra rolled 7 on 3D6) which subsequently charged into my Hierophant bunker and kill off my priests. Without the magic support buffs from my priests, the TK units are pretty weak and couldn't recover lost wounds.

Mistakes I noticed I made during the game was I was too hasty to charge the chariots into the hydras. Should have pull back the chariots nearer to the liche priest to get in range for magic buffs and charge the hydra after it move nearer.

Somethings I couldn't control were my Necrosphinx getting stuck in combat with the Corsairs for 5 game turns... couldn't roll 4s for to hit... and my scorpion scattering in front of the DE chariots lol... allowing the chariots to flank my skeleton warriors later and swinging the combat in DE favour.

Amazingly Necropolis knights (spezze mehreen 3+ armour sv!!!) perform quite well in this game. I'm thinking of replacing Ushabtis with Necro knights for the "hammer" role, but freaking NK miniatures are the most expensive $$$ in the TK range... embargo don't help either. Would have get them immediately from Maelstrom if not for the embargo...

Dwarf Victory!

PRINCE APOPHAS!!! That useless prince crap had caused me this game by not killing the Rune Lord (dwarf general) or breaking the Anvil of Doom unit which would caused the general to flee off table. If prince crap had been better I would had won the game instantly in turn 3, once the Rune Lord/Anvil unit dies or flee.

A tomb scorpion would had done better and cheaper in points.

End game thoughts

Damn it was so close!!! I would have won if my Ushabti did not crumple in the last turn by rolling double sixes... Krom was unlucky when his fleeing Silver Helm failed to rally on turn 2 and fled off table. Maybe he was worried of my "half painted" Necrosphinx, which looks pretty intimidating on the table top hehehe.

Prince Apophas is utter crap. Its just too expensive for what it can do, low toughness and Initiative 1 just dont cut it for a character assassin or (dwarf) warmachine hunter. If I did not use Apophas breath weapon in the attack against the archers he would have lost combat and crumple. Maybe he should be cheaper or have an additional rule where his selected "prey" (from soul reaper) cannot refuse challenge issue by him. For now he is just a waste of points though the miniature is nice.

I'm surprise that Necropolis knights performed quite well even against Sword Masters. Considering running 4 in a unit, but the $$$ cost of the models very expensive... maybe in the future I will get them. Now I will just proxy :)

Considering running a unit of 25-30 tomb guards in future game to see how they performed.

Next battle report against dwarfs 2.5k will be posted tomorrow.
