Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, who sufferred brain hemorrhage on Friday, was still in the Intensive Care Unit.

Singh was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in suburban Bandra on Friday morning and he underwent a surgery on the same day.

"He is still in the ICU and will be there till his health improves. Since the patient is in ICU it means he is under observation....He is on life support system and ventilator. He seems to be stable," said Dr Sudhir Dagaonkar of the hospital.

OTP is issued by the bank directly to the customer.

When do We require an OTP?

The OTP is required starting from February 1, 2011 onwards whenever you make a purchase by calling MakeMyTrip Call Center over phone. For such purchases you need to dial in the OTP in addition to your Credit Card Number, Expiry Date and CVV.

How can We obtain an OTP?

To obtain the OTP you should first register your mobile number with your bank. It is advisable to get it done as soon as possible. The process of registering the mobile number varies from bank to bank; hence its best to call the customer support of the bank that issued your Credit Card to know more.

Once your mobile number has been registered with your bank, you can obtain an OTP . Your bank will send the OTP to the registered mobile via SMS.

They are specialised bonds and can be issued for this purpose only that is the funds raised from the issue of infrastructure bonds can’t be utilised for any other purpose. There are certain point that a person should always remember before investing in any infrastructure bond that is the interest that is being provided on the bonds are fixed and so it does not provide any protection in the case of inflation. Second point to be remembered is that the person having infrastructure bond can place it in the bank for loan on the bond but the loan that is being given is based on the current market value of the bond and the credit worthiness of the bond and last but not the least infrastructure bonds are considered to be a safe investment but still there is no guarantee that the amount invested in the bond will be fully realised back at the time of the maturity or after the lock in period is over.

Infrastructure bond can be a good choice for investment as it provide with high return on the amount invested. There is no limit as to the amount that can be invested in the bond but as far as the tax saving is concerned there is a limit. A person falling in the highest slab of the income tax that is thirty percent can claim a tax saving of six thousand and not anything above that. That is a person investing somewhere round twenty thousand and is there in the highest slab of the income tax are eligible for deduction of twenty thousand and can save tax up to rupees six thousand. There is another benefit as to the deduction that a person claiming deduction is over and above the prescribed limit of one lack that is available to a person in chapter VIA of the income tax act and under the section 80C. an individual can claim deduction of one lack by investing in LIC, PPF, NSC and many more to claim the deduction and the benefit of the investment in infrastructure bond is available over and above the prescribed limit of one lack. Here the extra advantage of the twenty thousand is available only for infrastructure bond and not cannot be utilised by investment in any other kind of investments.

Almost two-thirds of people struggle to get a good night’s rest, which according to a British research, constitutes a major public health concern.

Some 60 percent adults admit rarely getting the recommended six or seven hours of sleep every night.

More than a third suffer from insomnia, and many have battled with the condition for years. Doctors warn that sleeplessness leads to depression, lack of concentration and an inability to carry out simple tasks.

According to the findings of a major report, insomniacs are four times more likely to suffer from relationship problems, according to the Daily Mail.

They are also three times more likely to have difficulties concentrating or be in a bad mood and twice as likely to have energy slumps.

A quarter of adults have other sleep-related problems such as teeth grinding or sleep apnea – a disorder characterised by abnormal pauses in breathing, which causes sufferers to wake up in the night.

Just 39 percent of people sleep well, according to the survey of 5,300 by the Mental Health Foundation in the UK.

It says children should be taught the health risks of lack of sleep at school and also recommends GPs are trained to better diagnose those with problems.

Experts say adults need at least five hours’ uninterrupted sleep every day to properly concentrate and function.

1) Do make sure your name, DOB, family members names, house no is not in password.

2) Do delete browsing history & delete all files in temp folder whenever you browse on any system except personal laptop.

Income tax departments released the revised draft direct tax code today. The draft DTC along with the Discussion Paper was released in August, 2009 for public comments.

The response from various stakeholders has been overwhelming and a number of valuable inputs have been received. CBDT has released the revised Discussion Paper on the draft Direct Taxes Code (DTC), which is being placed in the public domain to seek responses on the modified proposals. The major issues which have been addressed relate to Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) on gross assets, tax treatment of savings – Exempt Exempt Tax (EET) vis-a-vis Exempt Exempt Exempt (EEE) basis, status of Double Tax Avoidance Agreements vis-a-vis the domestic law, the administration of the General Anti-avoidance Rule (GAAR), taxation of income from house property on a presumptive basis, tax treatment of capital gains and tax treatment of non-profit organizations, etc. The response on the revised Discussion Paper may be submitted electronically on the website ‘Download Discussion paper.

Ratan Tata is the chairman of Indian Hotels who own the Taj Mahal Hotel Mumbai, which was the target of the terrorists last year.

A. The Tata Gesture

All category of employees including those who had completed even 1 day as casuals were treated on duty during the time the hotel was closed.

Relief and assistance to all those who were injured and killed

The relief and assistance was extended to all those who died at the railway station, surroundings including the “Pav- Bha ji” vendor and the pan shop owners.

During the time the hotel was closed, the salaries were sent by money order.

A psychiatric cell was established in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences to counsel those who needed such help.

he thoughts and anxieties going on people’s mind was constantly tracked and where needed psychological help provided.

Employee outreach centers were opened where all help, food, water, sanitation, first aid and counseling was provided. 1600 employees were covered by this facility.

Every employee was assigned to one mentor and it was that person’s responsibility to act as a “single window” clearance for any help that the person required.

Ratan Tata personally visited the families of all the 80 employees who in some manner – either through injury or getting killed – were affected.

The dependents of the employees were flown from outside Mumbai to Mumbai and taken care off in terms of ensuring mental assurance and peace. They were all accommodated in Hotel President for 3 weeks.

Ratan Tata himself asked the families and dependents – as to what they wanted him to do.

In a record time of 20 days, a new trust was created by the Tatas for the purpose of relief of employees.

Whatg is unique is that even the other people, the railway employees, the police staff, the pedestrians who had nothing to do with Tatas were covered by compensation. Each one of them was provided subsistence allowance of Rs. 10K per month for all these people for 6 months.

A 4 year old granddaughter of a vendor got 4 bullets in her and only one was removed in the Government hospital. She was taken to Bombay hospital and several lacs were spent by the Tatas on her to fully recover her.

New hand carts were provided to several vendors who lost their carts.

Tata will take responsibility of life education of 46 children of the victims of the terror.

This was the most trying period in the life of the organisation. Senior managers including Ratan Tata were visiting funeral to funeral over the 3 days that were most horrible.

The settlement for every deceased member ranged from Rs. 36 to 85 lacs [One lakh rupees tranlates to approx 2200 US $ ] in addition to the following benefits:

a. Full last salary for life for the family and dependents;

b. Complete responsibility of education of children and dependents – anywhere in the world.

c. Full Medical facility for the whole family and dependents for rest of their life.

d. All loans and advances were waived off – irrespective of the amount.

e. Counselor for life for each person

B. Epilogue

How was such passion created among the employees? How and why did they behave the way they did?
The organisation is clear that it is not something that someone can take credit for. It is not some training and development that created such behaviour. If someone suggests that – everyone laughs
It has to do with the DNA of the organisation, with the way Tata culture exists and above all with the situation that prevailed that time. The organization has always been telling that customers and guests are #1 priority
The hotel business was started by Jamshedji Tata when he was insulted in one of the British hotels and not allowed to stay there.
He created several institutions which later became icons of progress, culture and modernity. IISc is one such institute. He was told by the rulers that time that he can acquire land for IISc to the extent he could fence the same. He could afford fencing only 400 acres.
When the HR function hesitatingly made a very rich proposal to Ratan – he said – do you think we are doing enough?
The whole approach was that the organisation would spend several hundred crore in re-building the property – why not spend equally on the employees who gave their life?

New RBI guidelines for Cheque alterations

Banks have received RBI guidelines by virtue of which they are supposed to prohibit alterations / corrections on the cheque leaf. The details are as follows:

RBI Circular - DPSS/CO/CHD/ No. 1832/01.07.05/ 2009-10 dated 22nd February 2010 states that no changes / corrections should be carried out on the cheques (other than for date validation purposes, if required). For any change in the payee’s name, courtesy amount (amount in figures) or legal amount (amount in words), etc., fresh cheque forms should be used by customers. This would help banks to identify and control fraudulent alterations.
Based on the above guidelines branch / clearing teams can return cheques which have any alteration in the
• Payee Name
• Amount in numbers
• Amount in words

The only alteration which is allowed is the alteration in the date.
Note:
The above change will be incorporated by change in the Terms and Conditions on the cheque book issued by Banks.
Where available, customers should be informed through a message in the email as well as physical statement in April, May, June quarter
Banks will start returning the cheques for cash payments across the counter and clearing cheques effective 1st July 2010.

IPL: Mallya’s daughter questioned by I-T

The Income Tax department plans to enlarge its current inquiry into the IPL’s financial transactions to cover all the franchises amidst allegations of murky deals even as it questioned the ‘mystery’ woman and Vijay Mallya’s daughter who works for IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi.

Laila Mahmood, the step daughter of Mallya who owns the Royal Challengers Bangalore team, was identified as the woman who exited Modi’s office in a plush hotel in Mumbai minutes before I-T officials visited it for probe on Thursday.

The IT authorities probing various aspects of the Indian Premier League controversy have been able to ascertain the identity of the ‘mystery’ woman as Laila, a source in the department told on reporters.

Mallya also said in a statement that “my step daughter Laila Mahmood works for Lalit Modi. I know nothing about this. I called Lalit Modi and he confirmed that she has given a statement to Income Tax.”

Suspecting that the woman, who was seen carrying what appeared like a laptop and some documents, might have carried away some important documents, the IT authorities got into action and identified her.

Notwithstanding claims by IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi that it was routine questioning on Thursday by officials at the premises of BCCI and his office in Mumbai, I-T department sources said the special team has prepared a voluminous report on the operations and sent it to the Finance Ministry in Delhi.

Top sources said that in the wake of the report, plans were afoot to summon representatives of the various IPL team owners for questioning and for production of teams.

It may also include search operations on their officials premises, the source said adding it could be a long process, the sources said.

Officially there has been no no word on the operations in Mumbai but sources said the department in Mumbai has been asked to carry out further inquiries and, if necessary, even surveys and raids on IPL premises and those of its franchises.

“We are widening our inquiry. However, it will take some time before we obtain all details about IPL’s transactions,” the sources said.

Earlier indications were that only the new franchisees Kochi and Pune could be investigated but now the department may be expected to scrutinise the bid process of all the franchises in the wake of allegations about the sourcing of the funds of the teams.
Asked about the ‘mystery’ woman, Modi suggested that his staff could have brought papers for him from a hotel room which was caught on close circuit TV before tax officials went there.

“All I know is I was not at the hotel (Four Seasons where he reportedly has a temporary office). They (staff) do bring things to me in my office... because the I-T has asked us to bring some documents, it must be...,” he said when asked about reports that a woman removed important documents from the hotel in Mumbai before the I-T officials came there.

To another query, he said did not know whether his lap-top has been taken away by officials. “I have no idea about it, who has taken what,” he said.

Modi said the I-T officials were doing a job and he had no problems with that. “We have nothing to hide. The I-T has asked us information, that’s fine. There is no reason to be upset about”.

He reiterated the charge that Union Minister Shashi Tharoor stepped into the picture and asked him not to go into the details of the shareholders when he had put some questions to those who had come on behalf of the bid.

“I was just sitting in the room and asking all shareholders who the shareholders are. It became an issue when the shareholders did not know the names of other shareholders. That’s when the red flag was raised, when I asked who these people are.

“At that point of time they said they did not know who they were. They made a call to their father. Shailendra Gaikwad made a phone call to his father. At that point of time, he said he will get back to us. Then the phone call that came back to us was that of Mr Tharoor who said why are you inquiring into these items. At that point of time I still did not know whether these four people were linked or not”, Modi said.

The IPL Commissioner said he was signing the documents subject to confirmation but next day he saw in a Mumbai newspaper a news item (appararently referring to a reported proposal of Tharoor marrying his friend Sunanda Pushkar).

Asked how the conversation ended, he said the conversation did not end and he told Tharoor that he was recording the conversation.

“We have minuted it. It is in black and white. There is nothing to worry”, he said.
