GAGOSIAN GALLERY HOLDS WORLDWIDE EXHIBITION OF TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SPOT PAINTINGS BY ARTIST DAMIEN HIRST

The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 by Damien Hirst opens Thursday, January 12th.

Most of the paintings are being lent by private individuals and public institutions, more than 150 different lenders from twenty countries. Conceived as a single exhibition in multiple locations, chronicaling the whole of Hirst's creative range "from the first spot on board that Hirst created in 1986; to the smallest spot painting comprising half a spot measuring 1-1/2 inch (1996) to a monumental work comprising only four spots, each 60 inches in diameter; and up to the most recent spot painting completed in 2011 containing 24,781 spots that are each 1 millimeter in diameter, with no single color ever repeated."

Damien Hirst has a reputation as the British Artist that outdid Andy Warhol as a businessman and Jeff Koons as a master of kitsch and I agree. Hirst is offering a free personalised spot print to the first person who is willing to travel to every Gogasian Gallery around the world and sees everyone of the 11 exhibitions. Another reason is that Hirst actually only painted 5 of the estimated 1,400 spot paintings since 1986.

I must admit that each painting is equally cheery, modern looking and graphically optomistic and psychologically, yes, it triggers the penny-candy on paper strips that one could buy for a treat in our childhood memories.

And...yes there is an APP for that - the 3rd issue of the Gagosian App for iPad will also launch in January providing an interactive, in-depth look at the series of approximately 90 of the 300 spot paintings

Three of the 11 venues for this exhibition will be at the Gagosian galleries, 980 Madison Avenue, 555 West 24th Street and 522 W 21st Street in Chelsea opening on January 12th and closes on February 18th

While walking around the art scene in Chelsea you might think that your ears are fooling you because as you approach the corner of 25th and Tenth Avenue you hear what sounds like a loud base drum beating very loudly...however, it is the installation art piece by David Byrne at the The Pace Gallery's temorary site.

TIGHT SPOT is a huge inflatable terrestrial globe that is squeezed in the space bordered by the High Line bridge above and the brick walls at the sides. The globe emanates a low-frequency sound that can be heard from the surrounding streets and the High Line Park – provided there’s not too much competing noise from the cars and trucks in the streets.

COOL PAINTINGS AT A HOT 2011 Annual Summer Invitational

UNFAMILIAR IDOL

Unfamiliar Desire

Currently on view at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery the "2011 Annual Summer Invitational" which opened on August 10th and continues through August 27th features 11 diverse Emerging Artists. I am especially drawn to the three paintings by Jennifer Delilah, which are part of a larger Series of a narrative that takes place in a composite account of Colonialism.

The Series started with scenes set in the great Salons of Versailles, the meeting and ceremonial rooms of the aristocracy, creating a worldwide gaming field in which the last Dauphin of the French monarchy, Louis the 19th, plays games with his toy soldiers, oil wells, sometimes his nursemaid, and other visual clues, jokes, and symbols.

In this, the latest development in the Series, outside of the palace a bizarre economy is under way in which the beautiful, exotic birds are the slaves of the ugly storks.

It is as though the birds that populate this landscape have adopted human characteristics such as covetousness, lust, and materialism.

They follow their temporal wants despite countless unknowable diversions, helplessly treading ever upwards on a spriral staircase in pursuit of unattainable desires, despite the fact that they can in fact...FLY~

The Waiting Hours - 2007

While on my gallery art walk in Chelsea I decided to view Louise Bourgeois "The Fabric Works" exhibition which opened at Cheim and Read recently and runs through June 25th. When entering the gallery what was amazing to me was that what looked like abstract drawings or paintings, are actually made from scraps of clothes and other domestic materials that Bourgeois had collected over many years... this was not unusual, as she was brought up and worked as a young child in a family business involved in restoration of textiles.

Most people who are more familiar with her sculptures of large and small spiders, also sexual body parts, will be delighted and enchanted by these stitchings of lyrical collages and assemblages.

The excellent installation of these works at Cheim and Read gives a remarkable view of Bourgeois' variations on several themes: the allusion of landscape, black and white op-art and some exciting geometric coordination, as well as including various textured and colorful fabrics all from the collection of her "personal closet"

Eugenie Grandet, 2009 Bourgeios' use of collage and the art of embroidery on vintage tea towels (back gallery) made me think of the extraordinary focus and hours needed to complete just one properly and the non-traditional way these were presented

Carolyn Marks Blackwood seems to aptly use her camera as if it were a paint brush in this artist's deliberate repertoire as she focuses her attention in this series of photographs referring to a layering of clouds, which is included in the exhibition "The Wind Blows Through My Heart" at the Alan Klotz Gallery in Chelsea through June 25th.

Blackwood fearlessly incorporates the elements in the photographs of the "frozen water breaking up due to the opposing forces of tide and current" and has created hauntingly beautiful images of ice.

At the exit of "Picasso and Marie-Thérèse: L'Amour Fou" is an excerpt from a letter the artist wrote to his mistress and model Marie-Thérèse Walter in 1936. Rather than refer to her by name, Picasso interlocked the M and T of her first name to create a sign that functions as both monogram and symbol: "I see you before me my lovely landscape MT," Picasso wrote, "and never tire of looking at you, stretched out on your back in the sand, my dear MT I love you. MT my devouring rising sun. You are always on me, MT mother of sparkling perfumes pungent with star jasmines. I love you more than the taste of your mouth, more than your look, more than your hands, more than your whole body, more and more and more and more than all my love for you will ever be able to love and I sign Picasso."

The US premier of artist, Christian Marclay’s 24-hour film "The Clock" @Paula Cooper Gallery is an elliptically thrilling/endlessly enticing/must-see masterpiece of pleasure, appropriation, philosophical speculation and insight. Composed of 1000s of bits from movies/TV showing EVERY minute of the day and synced to REAL TIME. When it’s 5:32PM in a scene in the film it’s 5:32PM in the real world.

The film is shown in the gallery in real time that corresponds to real time on one's own watch when you enter and when you leave. Art Enthusiasts seem to think that it is a cool way to spend those quiet off beat hours before daybreak from Midnight on Fridays thought 5AM Saturdays when the gallery is open to the public.

So Faux, They are Genuine
As stated in AVENUEinsider, Half Gallery's, Bill Powers says, "more doppelganger than appropriation artist, Eneas Capalbo, celebrates the tenth anniversary of his Fake Condos series just as the real George Condo stages his own survey blocks away at The New Museum."

Most people may say that this has been done and over done, but Eneas feels quite the opposite, instead paying tribute to the virtuosity and brushstrokes of his predecessor's work in all too real time and further complicating matters by having George Condo himself attend the inauguration of these Fake Condo paintings when they debuted in 2001, prompting The New York Times to question the very provenance of the pieces themselves. So perhaps more than anything, these paintings are a call to complicity, an open rejection of the dictatorial nature creation demands. And they are cool-looking, too.

FAKE CONDO'S runs through Monday, February 14 at the Half Gallery, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

While visiting the FRANCIOS BARD exhibition at Axelle Fine Art, the model for one of the artist's paintings arrived unexpectedly at the gallery (photo above). The portrait of his hands is a typical composition by Bard.

"His paintings are of the simplest of all subjects, be it a shoe, a leg, a torso, a foot, a dog, or a face, which will take on a tragic and magnificent dimension. He manages to translate all his intimate emotion into a two-dimensional art work; each painting is an endless exercise of composition, rhythm and struggle, and the use of multiple layers of oil accentuates the feel and dynamic mood.

Bard’s paintings can be described as edgy. There is a dark, urban quality to his paintings that evoke both a sense of danger, loneliness and alienation of modern urban life."

Impressive is the uncanny skill of the artist in capturing an exact fabrication of the textures of all the inanimate objects that appear in each painting. BARD's process of application of oil paint, the scraping and scaring marks to the canvas is unexpected and a wondrous deviation from most traditional European painting of this genre, This technique allows the work to move forward, albeit derivative, into the realm of new Contemporary Art for the 21st Century.

I was invited to a Viewing Party at the studio of one of the contestants on the Bravo Tv new program called Work of Art. We had a great deal of fun commenting on the broadcast amongst ourselves. Of course, the Artist contestant, Judith Braun, already new the outcome of the contest winner but was prohibited from the big reveal by a legal gag order contract of sorts.

Program Work of Art to continue for 8 weeks during the summer months. Casting is now beginning for Season 2, which I personally think will be set in LA this time around.

I remember the first time I saw an exhibition of this artist's work way back in the day when SOHO was the art world capital in NYC. How wonderful, I thought, this glass, this glowing glass sculpture back lit in a dark gallery. Exquisite!

Dale Chihuly, who was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1941, has become an internationally celebrated personality in contemporary art and design whose prominence in the field of contemporary studio glass is unmatched. He is a generous and charismatic individual with a forceful personality, who ceaselessly promotes himself and his material—glass—to audiences around the world. He has championed the use of blown glass as a vehicle for sculpture, focusing on the vessel in his explorations of color and form.

An exciting exhibition of his work opens at the Marlborough Gallery in Chelsea, 545 W 25th Street, on September 16th, 6-8PM and continues through October 16th.

This 30 ft. screen made with 30,000 manufactured diamonds (detail on top) is one of the most excessive uses of gems that I have ever witnessed... and I love this piece. Damien Hirst exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery (uptown) has finally gotten to ME! Although his work for me has been mostly "shock and awe" triggers, with this conceptual piece I can identify! Included in the exhibition are some photorealistic paintings of famous gems such as (The Premiere Rose)

I am not going to mention the other piece that is difficult for me to comprehend in this post. BUT...

Had the intention of very special day attending the small exhibition (30 works) at the Guggenheim Museum's Collection of Non-Objective Modern Art, for a causal afternoon viewing. To my amazement, shock and awe, I was confronted by a completely "empty" Guggenheim. Bare walls and very few people mulling around on the ramps. Looked kinda' strange to me, however, I knew that it was between exhibitions. Took the elevator to Tower 5, enjoyed viewing the paintings, walked to Tower 7 (noticed some curator types merandering around) finished up with the Brancusi wood sculptures. Wandering onto the ramp I noticed Tino Sehgal and was introduced by a project director I had veen talking with, she made the introduction. Had a nice chat with him about his upcoming opening and offered congrats. He then proceeded to "convince" me and my friend to join the on-going rehersal of the Exhibition which will open on January 29th. I said "Where" he said "down there" I said "Where" he said "take the elevator down to the rotunda, and look for the children " I looked at him knowing I was supposed to have "an experience" as i had read the PR in the NYT. We shook hands and I thought WTF is going on in here.. what was I supposed to do, participate somehow? However, I was getting dizzy and on the edge of Vertigo from those pure while walls that seemed to be swirling around me - strange energy indeed. I then happened to look over the railing down to the floor of the rotunda and saw a " Choreography/Action" taking place...

Knowing that I was committed to being "involved" we arrived at the first ramp and was greeted by a child performer who asked me what "PROGRESS" meant to me... we walked and talked, until another performer met us with a new question about other countries and art (more walking UP) met by another performer with another interaction about Technology (more walking UP) met by another performer and another discussion a little more confrontational (more walking UP) and so it continued with different performers, more interactions until we reached the top ramp (walking ALL the way UP) then it was over - no one said it was over, we had to ask - got an affirmative "nod" and the performer disappeared...Press Release details

It is 5 hours later and I am still having an "experience" and a bad headache from the stark WHITE WALL S, the emptiness of the museum, and the effects the magnificent architecture had on my mind and body, but that's for another post...

Jerry Saltz at X

It was great fun attending the book launch "SEEING OUT LOUDER" for NY Magazine Senior Art Critic, Jerry Saltz last week, not only because I showed up to support Jerry, who I have known since back in the day, also to meet with others who wanted to meet in person the Facebook "friends" with whom we have been having many lively art world discussions on Jerry's Page. I never did get to purchase my book or have it personally signed as they were all sold out by the time I reached the front of a very long line. However, I did meet my " FB friends" some of them are now friends...

Jerry Saltz's book launch is included at the end of this video (below) which features the exhibition at Pace Gallery of David Hockney's paintings done in Yorkshire, England. This is Hockney's first show in 12 years and it is located in the Chelsea gallery on West 25th Street, as well as in the UES gallery, in NYC, NY

I truly enjoyed viewing the David Hockney Exhibition at Pace Gallery in Chelsea. These painting use the tried and true color pallet that he has made famous in various other works in the past. One remarkable thing that I can add to my experience with these paintings is to reveal that I had thought that the colors were imaginary until I happened to be watching an English made movie called "Happy Go Lucky"

which had a long landscape shot of a woman walking through the country side. There it was, YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND in living HOCKNEY COLOR...wonderous!

JAMES TURELL exhibition in Chelsea was a blast!

I know that holograms have been around for quite some time, however, this installation at Pace Gallery is exceptional. It was experiential, visual and emotional. I saw it, felt it and wanted to touch it. Of course, the illusion was complete...COLOR!

I found it exciting, all those many black picture frames, lining the walls...

and behold, take a little step or a big step, or walk fast or slow past them, and color, shapes and vibrations engulfs one in visual wonderland.

DEITCH PROJECTS - KEHINDE WILEY "Black Light" Exhibition

Is a photography not a painting show this time 'round for this artist.

WHAT was more interesting was not HIGH on the walls of the gallery, but what was LOW on the sidewalk "OUTSIDE"... Artist Wayne Coe's "Sand Painting" introducing the event of WILEY'S photography Exhibition. Ornately executed in black gun powder and white sand particles this treasure of visual and aesthetic expertise was the unexpected and delightful artwork surprise "happening" seen that entire evening in SOHO...
