Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, is located 500 kilometres north of Sydney and 400kms south of Brisbane. The region boasts a contrasting landscapes, from fruit and banana plantations in the hills to 3 main beaches close to the CBD of Coffs Harbour. The natural beauty of the region makes for a great backpacking destination with many activities such as surfing, golfing and fishing. 40 km North of Coffs Harbour at Corindi lies one of the largest Blueberry plantations in the Southern Hemisphere, and employs alot of seasonal workers.

Coffs Harbour has a regional airport. Airlines operate regular flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Newcastle. The drive from Sydney to Coffs Harbour is 6hours, Brisbane to Coffs Harbour is a 5hr drive. Countrylink runs two rail services daily from Sydney and Brisbane to Coffs Harbour. Most bus companies have regular services to Coffs Harbour.

Fruit Picking South Australia, this area has a lot of wineries, and grape picking is quite physically hard work, and often the weather is very warm during summer. Fruit Picking and Vegetables picking is not the most glamorous job and usually its seasonal work, but it can still earn the Backpacker $125 plus a day for those fun adventures you came to Australia to experience. There is also the added reward of picking fruit for 3 months and getting a 12 month extension of time on your working holiday visa.

From grape harvesting in Berri, to mango picking in Darwin, each year thousands of people find work helping to bring in the fruit and vegetable harvests.When Backpacking around Australia, no trip is complete without a stint of picking fruit and moving around the country according to where the harvests are.

Picking vegetables and fruit is a good way to lose weight and tone up, fruit and vegetable picking is physically demanding so being fit and healthy will help you work more effectively.

What you need:

A good average level of fitness
A Hat
Old clothes - long pants and long sleeve shirts
Long socks to cover your arms - the plants are scratchy
A water bottle to hold at least 1.5 ltrs
Sunscreen
2 pair of working shoes (steel capped are good)
A good attitude to hard work will make your job easy

Some employers will provide meals & accommodation too. Make sure you establish all conditions before you start work. Also remember that picking is reliant on the weather, so this might affect your wages for a short time.

Picking work starts around November through to the end of May and you must have a work visa, a tax file number and Australian bank account.

They don't guarantee jobs but try very hard to find everyone harvest work. They deal directly with 30 different farms and job placement agencies so if there are harvest jobs in the region they will probably know about them. Fruit Picking is weather dependent, and therefore may start at different times of the year depending upon the season. Organic Farm weeding Commences in October Vegetable harvesting including Potatoes, Zucchini, Broccoli and Lettuces generally starts in Nov or Dec A few packing jobs will start mid Dec but most not until the first week of Jan. Apple thinning commences early in December. Cherry's start in December or January depending upon the weather. Raspberry's start the day after Xmas. Carrot, Onion and Broccoli packing jobs start at the beginning of Jan and continue until June or July. Pears start in Feb, Apple picking in March and April. Swedes commence in June and continue until Sep or Oct.
