Its only a matter of time now. I'm very interested in seeing how Kinect 2 turns out. The original was rushed technology to compete with the Nintendo Wii, but then it turned out to be surprisingly innovative. Now that the Redmond boys have had some time to study and improve their little gimmick, we could see some really cool stuff, perhaps they can finally live up to that promise of Virtual Reality we got back in the 90s. Fingers crossed.
Here we go again...

Broadcom promises triple-speed 5G WiFi for mobiles in early 2013

Julian's Great Idea #163:

For me to play my MP3s or stream music (Pandora, Slacker Radio, etc.) in my car, I use a small Chinese-built FM radio transmitter that plugs in my phone's audio jack and sends my phat beats to an unused frequency on my dashboard radio.

It works fine, but its a lot of cables and stuff. Plus the transmitter is hella weak, it's gotta sit right on top of the stereo to hear anything but static (it was only like $3).

What I need is a smarphone, or just an app, that takes out the middle man, and lets me transmit via FM frequency directly to the car's stereo.

PROS: Good for us people with high-tech phones but low-tech cars. Good for hands-free calling too.

CONS: Might be a battery sapper.

According to the buzz we've heard repeated over and over again, Windows 8 is going to unite all the various fronts of the Windows platform, creating one giant OS that can expand and contract to any form factor, and allowing developers to make their software more easily portable from Desktop to Smartphone and back.

Currently, Windows 8 for desktops and Windows Phone 8 are the two converging areas, seeing more synchronization betwix the two, synching up various web services to integrate with each other in one way or another.
The missing link in this extreme weight loss/gain scheme is Windows RT platform appearing on the new Windows tablet wave. This Windows Tablet is being ushered in on the brand new Microsoft Surface for Windows tablets, which I must say is a very classy product produced by those smooth operators at Redmond. It's a wholly unique tablet, a perfect blend of mobility and performance, held together by sexy innovation. Much like the Nokia Lumia 800 was, despite performance set-backs was a rose among daisies. Windows is sailing on some incredible flagship designs. Surface comes in two orientations, which are pretty much separate platforms, Windows RT for power-tablet performance, and it's butch partner Windows 8 Pro, which is closer to an ultrabook that crossdresses as a tablet, showing again the flexibility of the Windows 8 plural marriage.
No one's sure. However, it's clear that Microsoft is heavily investing in the future of Xbox, as not just the money-printing game console, but as Microsoft's possible entrance into the Smart TV OS race of "10-foot" interface with the next generation of Kinect promising control of your entire entertainment set up, from television to Netflix to Skype to gaming, with a flick of the wrist. Kinect is an interesting technological mutation, originally braned as a gimmicky rip off of the Nintendo Wii's motion controls, it quickly proved so damned above and beyond it's counterpart that it had applications in healing sickness! Yes, it's helping surgeons make more precise surgeries! Yes, a gaming toy! Yea punk! The project for the third Xbox console, being referred to in the press as Xbox 720 (stupid stupid name), is set to appear before you know it.

With a robust software catalog on Digital Download, and a growing cloud infrastructure built on the Skydrive storage cloud being absorbed into the Windows Live network, Windows 8 is quite possibly the first real step toward a genuine boost in technological innovation in a long time, perhaps all the way back to Microsoft's last great miracle, Windows 95, which you gotta admit has set the bar for most OS interfaces since it literally conquered the market.

Perhaps I'm overstating the facts, this is Microsoft after all, not living up to the hype has been their encore for many years. However, this is Microsoft, default computing, the company whose most important product is on the near total majority of home computers. If Microsoft's goal is to push your phone, tablet, and gaming console requirements to be as complimentary to your computer as possible, which is a common trend in the industry these days, is it unreasonable to suggest that Microsoft may have the advantage?

J.
Tonight Redmond reveals what is Xbox Surface. While this name may mean nothing to the average laymen, for us techlightened individuals it means so much more. It is a name that will live in infamy for a at least a couple weeks, and in the tech industry that's a lot.

Microsoft Surface was a badass tech innovation by Big M about a touch-screen table top that could interface with more than just your dirty fingertips. It could apparently understand what object was being placed on top of it, meaning it could tell you put down a cup of coffee and... I don't know, I guess it could tell you its coffee, whatever, its still cool. It could also sync up with an electronic devise for wireless sync, mobile payments, streaming whatevers, and that's the part that sounded really interesting. I've only ever seen it in trailers, but you can easily recognize it in many many films, its that table top that the main characters gather around and look at photos and documents and stuff. Its totally real. The only movie I can think of at the moment is the remake of the The Day the Earth Stood Still.

So with that in mind we can conjure up a whole bunch of neat apparitions of what this new device could be. An Xbox super-tablet controller with Kinect gesture navigation and Zune wireless sync running Windows 8 and fabulous Metro. Oh the possibilities. Dazzle me, Mr. Balmer!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://words4nerds.blogspot.com/2012/06/xbox-surface-more-rumors-ahead-of.html' title='Xbox Surface?
For those of you who haven't been following the SOPA crisis, here is a link to an excellent article on Engadget that highlights all the crazy twists and turns that turned this simple legislative act into a declaration of war against the internet. A war that saw the long prophecized invasion of the by the Entertainment Giants, the fracturing of the Technology Community and it's decent into Civil War, former rivals like Microsoft, Google, and Facebook finding themselves fighting side by side on the front lines, the unlikely rise of Wikipedia as the wizened leader of the rebellion against tyranny, the corporate-backed razing of MegaUpload as the first blood drawn, the ideological rise of the digital black bloc known as Anonymous and their path of destruction across the government and corporate cyberspace, and lest we forget, The BlackOut, aka "The Day the Internet Said Fuck You."
In Depth: Highs and lows for Google in 2011

Here is an excellent list from Techradar.com highlighting the Top 10 and Bottom 10 moves Google has made over the last year.

Google is a hardcore dame. A stalwart juggernaut of the emerging electronic hegemony. Pretty soon Google will be able to connect with and improve nearly every aspect of your life, starting with work and school, and moving on to everything from cooking and gaming to washing your car or improving your love life. It could happen.

Some of the the Bottom 10 on the list I see more as stepping stones and invaluable learning experiences. For example, the Chromebook and Chrome OS. This is the future of computing and maybe the world's just not there yet, but to have a super-thin, super-light internet optimized lap top is exactly what 90% of the computing community wants, even if they don't realize it yet. And the Chrome Web Store is pretty neat, even if its a little redundant.

Another example is Google TV. Right now it's somewhat of a gimpy system, but that's not Google's fault. It's the cable companies and the television networks who are scared of its raw power. To be able to surf for any TV Show or Movie or YouTube Video, with additional online content, from the comfort of your own butt on the couch, thats what we have always wanted whether you want to admit it or not! Not to mention there seems to be something in the works to turn it into a gaming console as well, fingers crossed

Never count out Google. Tech people like to look down on them because they are "merely" am internet company, a search engine of all things. The hardware giants like Apple and Microsoft sneer down at Google from their ivory towers (PC towers that is :), but Big G makes up for it's humble beginnings with a drive and innovation that lead the electronic living industry. With their upcoming aquisition of Motorla and their burgeoning Broadband company that boasts a 1/Gbit per second bandwidth.
Straight out of the Golden Age of JRPGs, the blessed 2nd Generation of the Consoles, the Super Nintendo Epoch, comes one of my all time galactic favorites, Chrono Trigger. This game represents everything right with the genre; epic storyline, sprawling side quests, multiple endings dependent on choice, well-formed characters (except for Chrono), it has it all. Too bad it's not on Android yet. Oh well, that's what emulators are for.

It wasn't an easy victory, but Microsoft's boys pulled off a win thanks in no small part to raw ingenuity, inspiring power, and sucking just a little less than the competition.
I like Ubuntu. I dont know why. Maybe because its open source. Maybe cause its African. Who knows? Actually I think it is cause its African. Since when have we gotten anything cool from African since the Lion King, and that doesnt really count cause it was made by Honkie Gringos. I think it would be an uber indie statement to rock a sweet open source African operating system. Maybe they will actually put it on a decent computer instead of a net-tard. And when are they gonna finish that god damned Ubuntu Mobile (Kubuntu)?
Blizzard Announces 4th WoW Expansion: Mists of Pandaria

Pandarians are cool. I dont know why but they are. Ever since they appeared on the WoW scene they have been begging for some more content on the furry bastards. Where are they from? What do they do? What do their sex organs look like? Do Pandarian woman have breasts like Human women even though Panda women dont, and is that wrong?

Ive always been a fan of the Warcraft Universe. Blizzard has the power to make fanatasy both innovative and new, while at the same time being familiar. Lets hope they never screw the pooch.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/21/hulu-plus-coming-to-3ds-and-wii-handheld-getting-3d-video-captu/

I don't know why but this whole 3D shtick makes me uneasy. Am I the only one who notices that images dont really look three dementional! They just look super imposed on a background like Paper Mario. And thats just if they work. I saw Tron: Legacy in 3D, I never even noticed if it was 3D or not, and the fucking glasses gave me a headache. Plus Im sure weve all heard about the Nintendo 3DS and how if you play it too long you go blind and gay or something. This is not progress!

I feel like I'm in the fucking 90s and it's “Virtual Reality” all of again. Remember that crap. It was supposed to be the next big thing, but turns out the technology doesnt exist and every pale attempt either doesn't work or is total bullshit. I you learned a lesson from the Virtual Boy, Nintendo. Tisk Tisk.

Anyway, Hulu Plus on your 3DS, wonderful. Too bad you have to pay for it! I can watch Hulu for free on my computer, and I can watch that way longer than the 3DS before I get a headache.

This whole 3DS just seems like a bad idea that no one informed its creators about. It just seems like a supped up DS with a lame gimmick that everyone hates. I really hope they just scrap this 3D idea altogether. Admit defeat, and go back to working on touch screen stuff. I have a feeling the Playstation Vita is going to come on the scene like rock star and just curb stomp Nintendo's profits. Than maybe everyone will see I was right, which is all I care about.

I would like to play Star Fox though...

Anyhow, the Wii getting Hulu I like a bit more. Our lil Double-Gamecube looks to be going the way of its bigger, fatter brothers by becoming a mass entertainment console. I can dig it. Pretty soon we wont need to pay for cable anymore, cause we will have all the TV we want to see on our game bricks. And no commercials!!! (well, less commercials)

After all Ive pissed on 3D in my rant do I really need to talk about the 3D video capture. I have personally never seen one good god damn application of 3D. Will they please stopped trying to convince us otherwise! I dont wanna pay 55 bucs for a pair of stupid looking nerd glasses.

Than again, there may come a day when Im shown I was wrong. I would certainly love for 3D to become as awesome as we hoped VR would have been. Maybe we're finally ready... or not. Whatever.

Look at ole Kaz, lounging like an OG, not a care in the world...

Kaz Hirai: Sony is 'in discussions with non-Sony companies' over PlayStation Suite
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/20/kaz-hirai-sony-is-in-discussions-with-non-sony-companies-over/

So basically we may see the sexy, svelt logo of the Sony Playstation on some other devises. Some might say this disrupts the purity of the gaming platform, but those people are buttheads. I think this is great.

They days of the Hardware/Software marriage are over, it's all about open relationships now. I can access my PDA from my computer, I can watch streaming TV on my Phone, I can turn my shoes into a wireless hotspot, I can activate Kinect with my balls, a magical wonderful world of everything pluging their things into everything else. I love it.

This brings up a number of interesting ideas about where gaming is headed. If my sweet gamage is no longer limited to the giant cinderblock that's heating the floor in front of my TV, do I even need the cinderblock anymore.

I think Microsoft's approach is pretty neat. They wanna turn your Xbox into a magic entertainment hub. All the fun stuff flows through it, it can sync real easy with all your computers and doodleydoos, it can play your music, it can stream movies, and now it has streaming TV channels as well, oh and it also plays video games. It's a solid strategy I think, if I can get like 6 electronic devises in one plus play games it's, what they would call, a good investment.

It makes you wonder though if it's basically a super-ingelligent android VCR, will it continue to be a game console? Cause if people start buying it for the other stuff, Ballmer just might up and say, "Screw games, let's sell VCRs"

This thing actually looks pretty sexy.

So, with Playstation announcing their thing, we see sort of the opposite. While the XBox is getting bigger, the Playstation is getting smaller. Look at it this way. I'm broke, bitch! I'm prolly not gonna by the Vita or a PS3 anytime soon, but I still wanna game. So I would download the Playstation Suite on my phone in a heartbeat if I could. I might even buy a game or two. That's cash Sony can get that they wouldn't otherwise. Good thinking, Kaz.

However, if anyone can the soul of a Playstation to possess their smartcrap, why would anyone buy the hardware. I dunno, I prolly woundn't.

What would be truly awesome is if Xbox Live does the same and makes an app of something for Android, then I could have their widgets sitting side by side on my home screen. I'd feel like some sort of Uber-Gamer.

As for Nintendo, I don't know if they're doing anything, but knowing them, they will prolly never do anything to soil the prestige of their precious brand name by letting anyone else touch it. In a world where cross-platform, digital download shenanigans is becoming the norm, Nintendo could be left behind. Then again this is Nintendo, they are the Apple of video games, who knows what they'll come up with.

It would be so so so so tight to be able to get the Virtual Console on your phone or tablet though. Man, playing Starfox 64 on my Galaxy, it makes me a little hard just thinking about it...
