Re-thinkable LG's L9 application processor for Smart TV

Apple's CPU is remarkable item to be focused whenever its brand new product launching and let geeks spill out their excitement. The most recent CPU in new iPad is named in A5X, which integrates dual ARM's cortex A9 processor and quad PowerVR's SGX543MP4 GPU processors. This quad GPU processor structure, SGX543MP4, was known as used to be implemented in Sony Playstation Vita. Its quad GPU performance can be estimated like below;

1 core = 35M polygon / sec @200Mhz
4 cores = 133M polygon / sec @200Mhz

At this time, I reviewed LG's L9 AP's information again to compare with Apple's A5X. Surprisingly, L9 AP integrates dual ARM's cortex A9 and quad Mali 400MP GPU similarly to A5X. This performance of Mali 400MP in ARM's company site is shown as below.

LG released its simple cloud service beta version named as "Link in Cloud", http://www.lglink.com. The beta version is available for Korean and USA region now. The application for smartphone could be downloaded from Android App market.

Hakki Tosunlar, HE marketing manager in LG Holland, said that before CES 2012 they have tried to find out the simplest and smartest way to appeal the thinnest OLED Smart TV in the world. That was the bottom line to create this AD. This AD was created by Y&R (http://www.yr.nl/www/) and hired unknown actors for reality. Y&R opened this video in its website either.

KT reconnected its cord to Samsung Smart TV

The internet connection to Samsung Smart TV rearmed in 5:30PM (Korean time), Feb. 14. KCC(Korea Communications Commissions) announced KT and Samsung made a compromising to recent limitation on internet service to Samsung Smart TV and reconnected the service. According to this agreement between KT and Samsung, both parties cancel every escalated lawsuit each other. The agreement between both parties has 3 big stems as below.

- Both parties shell co-operate to build eco-system and develop Information-Communication technology industry.
- Build and operate the work group for smart TV right away.
- Discuss about cross collaboration for the investment to information network and valuation for smart TV industry.

In addition, KCC detailed its action item for research to network traffic increasing and investment sharing caused by smart devices.

At presentation of Samsung ES8000 Smart TV in Feb. 09, Samsung introduced its new feature in Smart TV, that was 'Evolution Kit' which, looks like game memory card, is core hardware kit to be replaced for upgrading for next version with brand new CPU and any other advanced hardware. It looks like a concept of boxes, Apple box, Google box and Boxee, internet enabled IPTV boxes. I imagine if Samsung open this kit to the industry, I means if Samsung allow any other's box could be put into Samsung Smart TV likely game pack.....No way!!!

Network Neutrality :: Finally explode the detonator

Few days ago, KT (www.kt.com), a leading company of telecommunication service in Korea, warned to stop its internet service to Samsung's internet enabled Smart TV. Finally, Feb. 9, Samsung denied the compromising to KT's declaring a war and KT cut its cord to Samsung Smart TV. The industry reacts the timed bomb under-ground was exploded. Eventually, this conflict between network provider and smart device maker is aiming to Network Neutrality issue and escalating to bring social agreement about sound eco-system. The network provider claims Samsung is on free-riding on network, in the other hand Samsung disputes the user of Smart TV is normal subscriber of network provider and the user has the fair right to enjoy the advanced network service. Finally KCC (Korea Communications Commission) is engaging to this mess and try to make an solution, but it looks to hard release this conflict because the strong tension between leading companies of the industry and the public opinion.

An obsession over refrigerator

Over more than 10 years, in every consumer appliance exhibition, I have seen a self-computing or networking refrigerator with information window of LCD screen on the door. At the first time I saw this, it was pretty cool but wonder my mom or my wife gladly likes to pay more money for this LCD screen on pumpkin icebox. See beside photo, LG R-S73CT refrigerator in 2001. 730 liter, 15.1 inch full color TFT-LCD with touch screen, internet enabled. Reportedly LG had invested 55 developers and 15 million dollars to develop this refrigerator for 3 years and earned 75 patents.

Fundamentally there is no differentiation between 2001 model and present model except for easy implementing technically and extending its connectivity to smartphone. Persistently the maker have been asking us for watching for over 10 years how they would be smart regardless it is necessary or not. It was unaffordable and useless at 10 years ago, and now the smart Apps on tablet could do that if needed. The problem before being smart refrigerator we should realize how long barely people stand in front of refrigerator to read every threw information. If assumed that people really wants to know everything before opening refrigerator, the refrigerator sends every information to the tablet or kitchen monitor (may be a brand new appliance, but more efficient for monitoring every appliance in kitchen). More significantly who is the master of our refrigerator? Imagine this, what happens if whole family know everything in their refrigerator now? How much old food we have, how many bottles, zipper bags...will you roll your sleeves up? Sometimes it's better we don't know its mess.

Samsung holds nearly 70% of cellphone market share in Korea

Reportedly, Samsung holds 68% of cellphone market in January this year in Korea. The estimated sold amount of Samsung is 1.58 million units of totally 2.32 million units volume in January. Especially Galaxy Note has been sold 700K units, 10K per a day, since its launching.
Meanwhile, Pantech is supposed to hold second place with 347,000 units sold amount (15% market share) in January. But surprisingly, Pantech achieved this with just smartphone without feature phone.
