Bryce Bayer Died

Imaging Resource: Bryce Bayer, the Eastman Kodak scientist who invented the almost standard color filter pattern that bears his name, has passed away. Bayer, 83, died on November 13th in Bath, Maine. The Bayer Filter array was patented in 1976, U.S. Patent No. 3,971,065. Bayer is also known for his recursively defined matrix used in ordered dithering.

Tra le varie migliorie che Google continua ciclicamente ad apportare a Gmail troviamo oggi un'interessante estensione della ricerca all'interno della webmail, che da ora fornirà anche risultati provenienti dagli allegati ai messaggi ricevuti.

Ai contenuti indicizzabili dal motore di ricerca interno a Gmail sono infatti stati aggiunti diversi formati, come file PDF, documenti Word, presentazioni PowerPoint e altri tipi di allegati diffusi che possano naturalmente essere "ricercabili" con del testo.

Il risultato è che per cercare un documento con allegati è possibile inserire has:attachment nel campo di ricerca, aggiungendo anche qualche keyword nel caso in cui si voglia appunto andare a guardare anche all'interno del contenuto di tali allegati. È inoltre possibile restringere la ricerca a determinati tipi di file, usando insieme a quanto appena mostrato anche l'opzione filename. Se per esempio si vuole cercare nelle email che contengono solo allegati di tipo PDF, sarà necessario inserire has:attachment filename:pdf.

If you're the sort to tear down your Galaxy S III, you might have noticed a mysterious STMicroelectronics LSP331AP chip lurking on the motherboard. While we've known that it's a pressure sensor, we now know that it's a new generation -- new enough that ST is just getting to explaining the technology to a mainstream audience. The piezoresistor-equipped MEMS chip tracks altitude through atmospheric pressure with an uncanny knack for precision; it can tell when you've crossing between floors, which could be more than handy for future iterations of indoor navigation. Don't worry if you're an extreme sports junkie that might push the limits, either. The sensor can do its job at the kinds of pressure you'd normally see when 32,800 feet high or 5,900 feet below sea level, which should keep it working even if you're checking your phone during a climb up K2 or a HALO skydive. We don't know if anyone beyond Samsung is lined up to use ST's pressure sensor in their devices, but we wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a mainstay for smartphones and outdoor gear in the near future.

The promise of free energy is an enticing one -- that's free as in renewable source, not cost. (This is capitalism, after all, someone's got to foot the bill.) Economic gripes aside, research outfits like M.I.T. are getting us one step closer to this cleaner fuel future with the creation of three dimensional photovoltaic cells. The team's findings, recently published in the journal Energy and Environmental Science, demonstrate how these computer-modeled structures, rising upward in an unfolded accordion shape, have been proven to increase their energy yield over contemporary flat panels by up to 20 times in field and theoretical testing. This capacity gain, made possible by an efficient harvesting of sunlight during less optimal hours of the day, could be especially helpful in powering regions prone to overcast or wintry climates. The tech is still far from consumer friendly, though, with the actual price of the associated juice exceeding that of traditional solar tech. With continued improvements to the manufacturing process, however, residential and business customers could very well look forward to a future outfitted with solar towers only a Cubist could love.

Ieri sera ho visto in funzione una caldaia a pirolisi aperta. Costruirla costa 50 euro.
Il mio vicino di casa, Valerio Marchioni, è un genio costruttivo. E mi ha mostrato una cosa che credevo impossibile.
Prima di spiegare di cosa si tratta devo raccontare cos'è la pirolisi.
Da 150 anni conosciamo questa tecnologia rivoluzionaria, restata quasi inutilizzata (chissà perché).
Il principio scientifico è elementare: se metto della legna dentro un cilindro, aspiro l'aria e poi porto il cilindro a 400 gradi, succede che il legno si scinde in gas e cenere. Questo gas è del tutto simile a quello che usiamo per cucinare e può far andare un'auto, un generatore di corrente o scaldare.
Oggi esistono persino degli scooter che montano questo meccanismo.
La pirolisi, o scissione molecolare, è esattamente quello che abbiamo visto in Ritorno al futuro 2 quando fanno partire l'auto rovesciando in un cilindro un po' di immondizia.
È importante notare che con la pirolisi si può trasformare qualunque sostanza organica secca in gas.
E, per inciso, questo sistema è molto ma molto meno inquinante degli inceneritori (termovalorizzatori) che prima bruciano e poi filtrano i fumi (il che è difficilissimo e ti scappano le nano particelle mortali).

Magnavox Odyssey, la prima console per l'intrattenimento domestico, festeggerà quarant'anni dalla presentazione il prossimo 24 marzo. Ralph Baer, che la creò, ha compiuto novant'anni lo scorso 8 marzo. David Friedman, un fotografo newyorkese, ha intervistato l'ideatore di Pong, ovvero Table Tennis: il primo videogioco della storia.

Sorprendentemente, se a novant'anni ha ancora voglia d'innovare, Baer non è soddisfatto del ruolo assunto dai videogiochi. I giovani dedicano troppo tempo ai propri smartphone e non leggono più. In un certo senso, Baer riconosce d'aver creato un "mostro". Le sue intenzioni erano diverse: riunire le famiglie davanti alla televisione.

Table Tennis e gli altri undici giochi di Magnavox Odyssey, ad esempio, erano pensati per essere utilizzati in famiglia. Baer – considerato l'inventore dei videogiochi – non ne ha mai concepito un utilizzo individuale. Le modalità a single player di smartphone e console è «una degenerazione» d'un modello ideato per la condivisione.

This isn't the first time you've heard of EPOS or XTR, but it's been quite some time since we've checked in with either of the outfits. So, imagine our surprise as we stumbled on new developments from each company as we perused the Texas Instruments booth at MWC. In the case of EPOS, we're shown a stylus that, in addition to offering traditional physical touch input, also allows users to interact with a device via ultrasound. The system is built upon TI's OMAP4 platform and requires that four microphones be placed at the corners of the screen. In this demonstration, we're shown how users can manipulate objects on a 3D plane via the Z-axis by pulling the pen away from the display. Next, we're shown a new application for the touchless gesturing system that XTR first debuted back in 2010. In this scenario, it's demonstrated how tablet owners could use the front-facing camera (at merely QVGA resolution) to flip through pages of a cookbook without worry of getting ingredients on the device. The concept software was developed by a French outfit known as Stonetrip, and also allows users to zoom and pan through the pages. You'll find demonstrations of each technology in a video after the break.

If you thought a bigger pixel count just meant bigger file sizes, then take a look above. That big guy at the bottom is the 41-megapixel sensor responsible for those awesome Nokia 808 PureView shots we saw at MWC on Monday. The two above it are 8- and 5-megapixel sensors respectively, and give you an idea of the real-estate cost of packing a superior snapper. At two and a half times the physical size of the N8's prized optics, we think the PureView system earns its title as the biggest thing in mobile imaging somewhat convincingly.

A Ramona Fricusu, una cittadina del Colorado, è stato ordinato di rivelare il contenuto del proprio portatile, affinchè l'accusa del processo in cui è coinvolta potesse usare i file contro di lei. Negli Stati Uniti la legge (sotto forma del Quinto Emendamento) garantisce ai cittadini il diritto di non auto-incriminarsi, ma il giudice distrettuale ha sancito che in questo caso le norme in questione non sono valide.

L'avvocato di Ramona non s'è certo perso d'animo e per salvare la donna ha invocato una delle situazioni più tipiche per chiunque bazzichi con i computer: "La mia cliente ha dimenticato la password" ha comunicato il legale, "E' davvero probabile che se la sia scordata. Al momento non mi è neppure chiaro se la mia cliente è colei che è l'originario responsabile del processo di crittografia dei dati presenti sul laptop, e ne consegue che non sono certo che sia in grado di decrittarli". Non serve un tribunale americano per ammettere che dimenticare una password, specie una di quelle "aziendali", è davvero facile ed completamente plausibile.

Nonostante i toni quasi farseschi dell'affermazione, che potrebbero farci ridere sotto i baffi, il problema per il giudice ora è concreto. La Corte Suprema americana non ha mai affrontato la questione e queste "ordinanze di decrittazione" sono state molto infrequenti, con ripercussioni ancora poco chiare. Se questa "dimenticanza" risulterà essere la dichiarazione ufficiale dell'imputata, il giudice sarà costretto a stabilire senza alcun elemento di prova se la donna mente oppure no, una situazione che qualsiasi giudice americano cerca di evitare come la peste. Se la donna fosse sul serio incapace di decrittare il disco, infatti, non potrebbe essere arrestata per il suo rifiuto di cooperare.

Del resto, se davvero il portatile Toshiba che è oggetto del contendere è l'unica prova disponibile all'accusa, allora l'imputata dal proprio punto di vista fa davvero bene a "dimenticare" la password, anche a costo di subire i sei mesi di carcere che sono il massimo che la legge americana assegna a chi non collabora in un processo. Il precedente che si andrà a creare con questo caso avrà sicuramente delle ripercussioni sui casi futuri.

If the names Phillip Torrone, Limor Fried and Collin Cunningham don't ring a bell then you probably need to hand over your geek badge. If, on the other hand, those names immediately make you sit up and pay attention, you maybe excited to hear the trio have just released the first Adafruit-branded app for iOS. Circuit Playground is a reference app for makers, hackers and tinkerers that helps you decipher resistor and capacitor values; calculate resistance, current or voltage; convert decimal, hexadecimal and binary values; and store PDF data sheets for ICs. The app is $2.99, but it comes with a $3 credit at the Adafruit shop, so it's kinda-sorta free. It's available for iPad and iPhone only, but an Android version is in the works. If you're an impatient Google fan, they suggest you check out ElectroDroid which performs many of the same functions and we can confirm is awesome. Dopo più di 15 anni si interrompe il nostro rapporto con uno degli elementi più caratteristici di Windows, il tasto Start. Microsoft ha deciso infatti di rimuoverlo dall'ultima build di Windows 8, ed a quanto pare il cambiamento sarà definitivo.

Apparso con Windows 95, il tasto Start ed il relativo menù hanno condizionato la nostra esistenza, ponendo le funzioni principali del sistema operativo per la prima volta in un solo posto. All'inizio dello sviluppo Windows 8 aveva conservato questa funzione. Era persino stata adattata graficamente nuovo look Metro, piatto e colorato, ma nell'ultima beta (Build 8220) la Super Bar ne è risultata priva.

Quest'ultimo elemento, la "Super Bar", è figlia di Windows 7, e pare destinata a rimanere presente. Ora agirà come una specie di dock stile OS X, per scorciatoie e finestre - Un ruolo che alla fin fine poco si discosta da quello originario. Il tasto Start potrebbe anche essere reintrodotto in futuro, se proprio gli utenti dimostrano di non poterne fare a meno, ma la sua fine era stata già pianificata da tempo, quindi ci sono scarse possibilità.

Per navigare ora verrà utilizzato un "hot corner" privo di elementi grafici. L'angolo sinistro in basso del desktop (guarda caso, lo stesso in cui tradizionalmente "viveva" il tasto Start) sarà quindi "sensibile", e consentirà l'accesso al menù di Windows 8 o direttamente al desktop, e attiverà automaticamente una thumbnail che visualizza la destinazione. Questa nuova interfaccia è studiata per funzionare altrettanto bene con il puntatore del mouse o col dito su di un touchscreen.

Potrebbe sembrare strano preoccuparsene, ma alla fin fine per qualcuno, probabilmente fra molti e molti anni da adesso, sarà molto importante capire come l'era del personal computing si è evoluta. Questi pronipoti, archeologi o appassionati che siano, vorranno certamente esplorare i migliaia e migliaia di software che giravano su vecchi computer come Commodore 64, Apple II, Amiga e PC 8086. Per uno scherzo del destino, se tutti avessero sempre rispettato la legge questa folta gamma di programmi sarebbe già dovuta scomparire in una nuvoletta di tristi byte corrotti.

Come dice un interessante articolo di Benj Edwards, tutti quei software obsoleti sono stati registrati su supporto magnetico, come nastri, cassette, floppy, un genere di media estremamente delicato e che nelle condizioni ideali comunque non sopravvive per più di 30 anni - Molto meno in qualsiasi ambiente "normale".

Chiunque sia vissuto nell'era del floppy, a dire il vero, avrà fronteggiato dischi danneggiati e malfunzionanti, un problema che continua a verificarsi sui moderni HDD, gli ultimi discendenti della categoria. Ne consegue logicamente che quei floppy che forse avete a prendere polvere cantina a questo punto sono già "morti", il loro contenuto perso per sempre.

Per fortuna, continua a vivere altrove. Ciò che ha salvato gli anni ottanta e novanta dell'informatica è la pirateria sui cosiddetti abandonware, i software che nessuno vuole più. Non son più compatibili con le macchine moderne, ma restano protetti da copyright, ed è tecnicamente illegale copiarli. Nessuna università o biblioteca o ente benefico potrebbe mai archiviarli in forma digitale.

Eppure sono tanti gli appassionati che si scambiano grazie al web ed ai circuiti del p2p i vecchi software, gli unici che si prendono la briga di sconfiggere gli antiquati ma cervellotici meccanismi anti-copia degli sviluppatori di venti e trenta anni fa, e ci sono persino degli eroi del coding che passano il proprio tempo liberi a creare emulatori per far girare al giorno d'oggi questi programmi.

E se qualcuno pensasse che il problema si esaurisce qui, sbaglia. Basta pensare ai prodotti sull'iTunes App Store per esempio, e a come spariranno quando Apple smetterà di supportare gli hardware per cui sono stati creati. E' sufficiente tenere a mente tutti i contenuti protetti da DRM, che inevitabilmente diventeranno illeggibili in futuro. E' ironico, insomma, che per gli archeologi del futuro una gran parte della nostra cultura si salverà solo se qualcuno oggi infrange la legge per copiarla e diffonderla, mettendola al sicuro.

Still looking forward to a world where cell phone cameras don't suck? So is STMicroelectronics, and it hopes to hurry along a photogenic future with the help of a new supercapacitor-powered integrated camera flash. STCF04, the outfit's new integrated camera flash and torch controller, gives its LED flash module over 40 Watts of power, reportedly allowing it to give off the same level of brightness as an outdoor security floodlight -- handily blinding your friends and family with each merry burst of the bulb. STMicroelectronics says this luminescent overkill helps high-megapixel camera sensors absorb more light, cutting down on the need for longer exposure time and hopefully resulting in less image blur when shooting indoors. The sensor packs in eight user-selectable flash levels, and features up to 12 levels of brightness for torch (you know, flashlight) use. Phone or camera manufactures who want in on the action will be able to order the chip for $2 a pop later this year -- if they're willing to risk giving Mr. Blurrycam a break, that is. Hit the break for a flash of the chip's official press release.

Chrome Canary, una particolare versione sperimentale del browser di Google – disponibile in esclusiva per Windows – ha acquisto la possibilità d'effettuare selettivamente chiamate audio e/o video basate su WebRTC. Quest'ultimo è un framework per la comunicazione in tempo reale: è utilizzato, ad esempio, per gli Hangouts di Google+.

WebRTC – a differenza di Google+ Hangouts – non è un'applicazione: è, piuttosto, un protocollo che può essere utilizzato per realizzare dei programmi sulla falsariga di Skype, ma integrati nel browser. Il supporto di WebRTC su Chrome è limitato a Canary — oppure alle nightly build, ancora più instabili, su Windows, Mac OS X e Linux.

Il framework utilizza soltanto JavaScript e HTML5: WebRTC è stato sottoposto a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) e Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) per diventare uno standard. Chi volesse provarlo su Canary, può avvalersi di un'applicazione realizzata dagli stessi sviluppatori del protocollo, ma l'adozione richiederà del tempo.

The recording is 100% vocals and 100% my own voice. In order to perform this song, I actually had to write out the entire orchestration from a recording and perform every part, which ended up being over 30! The violin runs were the most fun to record :) Keep on singing, my friends!

Sbloccare il bootloader è l'anticamera per li modding, ma questo non è più necessariamente vero se avete uno smartphone Xperia: vi presentiamo infatti un metodo per poter installare la Recovery ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7 anche con bootloader bloccato.

Scallop's Novel Color Filters Improve Low-Light Imaging

Scallop Imaging, a division of Tenebraex, presents "Gemini Technology: Color imaging under all lighting conditions, including extreme low light". The company says "we have developed a new system of producing color video imagery in low light that offers an order of magnitude better low light performance compared to standard RGB sensors.

Instead of the standard RGB three-filter set, our Gemini system uses unique high transmission color filters to produce a full color image from two channels under all lighting conditions, including extreme low light".

Not much more info is given. A 121MB video file from 1.2MP monochrome CMOS sensor (3.75 µm pixel) equipped with Gemini color filters compares to the color version of the same image sensor.

A video frame recorded at 0.18 lux (equivalent to 3/4 moon), 15 fps taken with

a color 1.2 megapixel image sensor.

A Gemini prototype video frame taken with the same exposure and frame rate

as above, with monochrome 1.2 Mpixel image sensors equipped with Gemini

color ﬁlters.

We've kept a pretty stern eye on the development of GRASP Lab's quadrocopters, and with good reason it seems, now that the four-bladed aerial ninjas have even more alarming abilities at their disposal. In the video after the break, watch them hold a variety of complex formations like it's no thing -- even while on the move. The 'copters can also take flight, or resume position, after being thrown into the air, navigating real world obstacles with deft fluidity. It's part of Pennsylvania University's Scalable sWarms of Autonomous Robots and Mobile Sensors project (conveniently SWARMS for short), which is responsible for developing the air-born acrobats' new grouping skills. They say it's an attempt to replicate swarming habits in nature, though we're not convinced.

Diciamolo, Chrome to Phone è una di quelle chicche per le quali non possiamo fare a meno di ringraziare Google di esistere e di essere così nerd-oriented: un programmino che, grazie all'apposito plugin per browser ci consente di inviare al nostro cellulare un link, un'immagine, un testo, una mappa…
Eppure, questo software tanto geniale quanto utile sembrava essere stato abbandonato: l'ultima release risaliva a Dicembre 2010, ma oggi per fortuna Big G ci dimostra di non essersene dimenticata, aggiornandolo alla versione 2.3(Continua...)
