The new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee marks the first application of company’s new, flexible fuel 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which features Variable-Valve Timing, 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm.

2011 Grand Cherokee is a 5.7-liter Hemi V8, generating 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm. The Hemi features VVT and fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS) technology with dual exhaust to maximize efficiency.

Torsional stiffness is 146 percent more than the previous Grand Cherokee, and stiffer than the BMW X5 and Toyota Highlander, according to Chrysler. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system delivers off-road capability along with the new Selec-Terrain system that allows the driver to choose the drive system that best matches on- or off-road conditions. New front and rear independent suspension systems deliver better on-road handling and comfort, the company claims. Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.5 inches of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls.
The 2011 Grand Cherokee is the new model base priced at $32,215.

Opel introducing the latest 2011 Astra Sports Tourer last week and this means that there is one more model left in order to complete the lineup: the Astra GTC Coupe. We decided to talk to our insider from Opel today to find out when the new model will be revealed and the answer came immediately: at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.This would make perfect sense, because the new 2011 Astra Sports Tourer will be revealed in September at the Paris Motor Show and at the next big European auto show we will see the new coupe. Regarding the design of the car, this will be inspired by the five-door model, but it will carry a new front apron, daytime running LEDs as well as new headlights and front grille. Under the hood we will find both petrol and diesel engines.

The Opel Astra Sports Tourer offers an extended powertrain line-up. The new line-up includes eight vigorous yet frugal gasoline and diesel engines, ranging in power from 70 kW/95 hp to 132 kW/180 hp. A new addition is the 1.4-liter turbo gasoline unit which comes with a six-speed manual transmission, giving the new Astra 88 kW/120 hp. The 103 kW/140 hp version of the 1.4 Turbo engine is now also available with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.0 CDTI engine with 118 kW/ 160 hp tops the diesel line-up and is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox. It combines high performance and torque of up to 380 Nm (with overboost) with 5.1 liter fuel consumption and 134 g/km CO2 emissions. An automatic six-speed transmission is also available.

The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro returns for its second model year with only a few minor changes. The high-shouldered, cartoonish exterior, scorching performance, and muscle-car attitude carry over with all the force of before. Just as the muscle-car feeding frenzy might have subsided, Ford turned up the heat this year with new V-6 and V-8 engines, truly resurrecting a decades-old rivalry. And what better indication than after Ford revealed the 305-hp Mustang V-6, Chevrolet announced a new 312-hp rating for its base 3.6-liter V-6 in the Camaro. The 2011 Camaro makes some extreme sacrifices inside in order to achieve an aggressive look.

The Chevrolet Camaro features including Driver and front passenger dual-stage air bags, driver and front passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags, head curtain side-impact air bags for front- and rear-seat occupants, front-seat safety belt load limiters and pretensioners and a front passenger detection system that senses children and small-stature adults, and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate.

The Chevrolet Camaro features deep, recessed gauges, located in square housings outlined in chrome, giving a nod to the classic Camaro. The instrument panel gauges include both speedometer and engine rpm, with a driver information center located between the large gauges, with its readouts and features capable of being controlled via a stalk on the steering column. There is also an optional, console-mounted gauge package includes oil pressure, oil temperature, volts and transmission fluid temperature.

The new Jeep J8 marks the brand's return to vehicle production for military and civilian government use – the same capability that makes the Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited famous also makes the Jeep J8 a truly multipurpose vehicle.

The Jeep J8 is powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 118 kW (158 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb.-ft.) of torque, providing towing capability of up to 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs.). The engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The J8 also features a unique air-intake system with special filtration and a hood-mounted snorkel that enables the J8 to wade in water up to 762 mm (30 in.) deep and tackle sandstorm conditions for up to five hours.

The Jeep J8 is available as a two-door with an extended pickup bed for personnel or equipment transport, or a four-door multipurpose vehicle. It may be produced with numerous vehicle-body and seating configurations in either right-hand or left-hand drive.

The 2012 Ford Focus rolls into American showrooms in early 2011 as an all-new model built in the U.S. but designed to international standards. Ford is finally casting aside the creaky Focus it's been pawning off on U.S. drivers for years. In its place comes a "global" car with advanced styling, engineering, fuel economy, and performance that could reboot what we think about affordable small cars.

The 2012 Ford Focus will enjoy a climate in which cars its size carry premium prices,one European Focus model sells for the U.S. equivalent of $35,000.

The 2012 Ford Focus has high-tech dashboard that supplements conventional audio and climate controls with liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and cell phone-style five-way buttons and keypads. Called MyFord, it's customizable and governed via steering wheel controls or voice commands. The basic system uses a pair of 4.2-inch LCD screens, one in front of the driver for main instruments, the other atop the center console to display and adjust climate and infotainment functions. Higher-cost versions have an 8-inch central screen.

The 2012 Ford Focus has some safety features; a complete suite, including antiskid control, will likely be standard. Fold-down rear seats, power windows, locks, and mirrors probably will be included in the base price, as well. Options are sure to encompass leather upholstery and a power sunroof.

Volkswagen has officially announced plans to construct a new powerplant facility in Mexico. Designed to crank out a total of 330,000 engines a year, the Silao plant will cost the company $550 million to build and will bring around 700 jobs to the area. VW says that the new factory is key to its strategy for expansion, and it will help provide engine components for both the new Jetta, which is built in Puebla, Mexico and the company’s New Midsize Sedan (NMS), which is slated to be built in the company’s Chattanooga, Tennessee plant starting in 2011.

The new facility also underscores the VW decision to redouble its focus on the American market. The manufacturer says that the new plant is part of its plan to create vehicles that are more tailored to American tastes in a quest to go after a larger market share.

In addition to having an ample work force, the 60-hectacre piece of land already features transportation options and had been previously developed. The full press release can be found after the jump.

Back in July, Toyota and Tesla announced a joint venture to bring electric vehicles to market, and the first example – the RAV4 EV – is slated to go on sale in 2012. Now, an update from Toyota says the all-electric RAV4 will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November, meaning that an on-sale date in 2012 doesn’t seem all that unrealistic.

Speaking of 2012, Toyota also tweeted about its plans to bring the Prius PHEV to market in the second quarter of that year, citing May or June as a specific timeframe. When it launches, Toyota is targeting sales of roughly 20,000-plus units in North America, with the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf as the key competition.

Subaru’s Third-Generation Boxer Engine – Click above for high-res image

Boxer lovers, the next chapter in your love affair has just begun. Fuji Heavy Industries, parent company of Subaru, has introduced the latest, third-generation boxer engine that will relieve the second-gen after 21 years of service. This is a brand new lump, not a rework, and FHI has built a factory just to produce it.

The bore and stroke have been increased, and it will be available with four cylinders in 2.0- and 2.5-liter displacements. The intake ports have been redesigned, lighter pistons and connecting rods offer reduced internal friction, and separate cooling circuitry for the block and the head are some of the changes that have resulted in a lower emissions and a ten percent increase in fuel efficiency. No power figures are being quoted yet, so we’ll have to see how it measures up when it finds its way into production engine bays.

This new boxer will be Subaru’s primary engine, and will first be seen in the Forester. Follow the jump for the press release, and you can have a closer look at it the high-res image below.

When it comes to luxurious exclusivity, there’s nothing quite like a Rolls-Royce. And while your local R-R dealer will give you the white glove and red carpet treatment all day long, the automaker prides itself on offering an extensive personalization program. After all, if you’re paying buku bucks for any of the vehicles in the Rolls stable, why not shell out for some personal touches?

To promote its knack for bespoke design, Rolls-Royce will be bringing five personalized vehicles to the stage at this year’s Paris Motor Show. Along with the gunmetal metallic extended-wheelbase Phantom pictured above, a Phantom Coupe, Drophead Coupe and two Ghosts will be on hand, allowing show-goers to get a taste of the optional touches available across the automaker’s portfolio. The Phantom seen here features custom elements like special embroidery in the headrests, seat piping and mother of pearl centers to the white instrument dials, control knobs and analog clock face.

Porsche is looking to help five lucky families celebrate the holiday season this year. The German automaker’s lifestyle accessory division, Porsche Design, has come up with what has to be the world’s costliest advent calendar. Instead of an array of tasty chocolates stashed in a cardboard calendar, the company has built an aluminum tower nearly six-feet tall. There are unique Porsche Design gifts designed to correspond with each day in the run up to Christmas, including niceties like a P’6910 mechanical stopwatch, a full P’7340 kitchen and, probably most impressively, an RFF28 “motor yacht” with a single 525-horsepower Mercury engine. Quite how they get the last two items to fit in the tower, we’re not entirely sure.

The rest of the days are marked by goodies like Porsche Design cuff links, pens and sunglasses dipped in 18-karat yellow gold. The price for all of this finery? A cool one $1 million, but with only five of the calendars being created, we’re guessing that they’ll have a shot at selling them all. The Nissan Juke, a space oddity that continues to win hearts and minds, has a commercial in the UK that continues the crossover’s ownership of left field. The two-minute spot with a music track straight from a Halo ad injects some energy to the Juke mix, suggesting that it might have enough spark to get the city going and make your hair stand on end. Mitsubishi has had a very rough road the last few years. Its sales have fallen steadily since a peak year in 2002 when the brand pushed 354,111 units out the door. According to Automotive News, Osamu Masuko, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, says he is often asked if the Japanese automaker is ready to pull out of the U.S. market. “It never enters my mind,” he says.

The company with the triple diamond logo has big plans and lofty goals for the near future. Currently, Mitsubishi moves around 50,000 vehicles per year and Masuko’s personal goal is to push that figure to 200,000 vehicles – an increase of 400 percent. He believes the path to his goals is through new products and moderate incentives, both of which will help drive steady and sustainable growth.

The product lineup is shifting away from a past littered with larger sedans and SUVs. Mitsubishi is going to aim for smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles as well as all-electric vehicles such as the i-MiEV. In addition, it plans to move away from regional vehicles to develop consistent global platforms. Since the U.S. market only accounts for less than 10 percent of global sales, this sounds like a smart move, but smaller vehicles often bring smaller profit potential, so it will be interesting to see if Mitsu can thrive with this sort of a business plan.

Osamu Masuko’s bottom line is that changes are coming, Mitsubishi is going to turn its ship around starting this year with new offerings like the Outlander Sport, and it remains committed to regaining its past success in the American market.

Mini Scooter E Concept – Click above for a high-res image

Mini’s given us an almost true-to-life view of its Scooter E Concept, and while there’s a little too much going on up front, the overall design stands to look quite all right in person. There’s some serious action going on around the wheels, so as its “E” designation would suggest, motivation will be provided by two electric motors. We’ll get up close with it at next week’s Paris show, and since there’s nothing a mod in overalls and flight boots won’t help, we’ll expect to see her there, too. Hat tip to Rob

We’ve been staring at spy shots of the forthcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK for months, but now we have our best look yet at what Benz’ baby coupe will look like once the camo tape is peeled away.

The grille gets a nose job to match its larger SLS AMG sibling, and the photo above reveals it to be a more pleasing aesthetic than in previous shots. Also, it seems the new SLK wants to play with the cool kids who are all wearing LED running lights.

If our intel holds up, the reason behind the larger grille isn’t just to mimic the gorgeous gullwing, but to feed the new 476 horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. If that mill is going in any SLK, it’ll be wearing an AMG badge on the back, and we’re hoping to get a better look when we stop by the Mercedes-Benz booth at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

Colorado State Parks Raise Fees

Faced with the difficult choice to raise user fees or close its parks, the Colorado State Parks Board has voted to approve new fee changes. The board claims the higher fees are necessary to maintain a clean, safe, and accessible statewide park system for all visitors. Effective November 1, the fee for a daily pass will increase by $1, and the annual pass will increase by $10. A $2 increase will apply to camping at 12 high-use parks and cabin, yurt and guesthouse rental fees. The new user fees are expected to generate about $700,000 in 2010 and $1.3 million in 2011. Volvo has been so kind as to give us an inkling of what to expect from the company when it arrives at this year’s Paris Motor Show. The Swedish carmaker will display new R-Design versions of both the S60 sedan and the V60 wagon. According to the press release, both cars will receive the usual go-fast treatment, starting with a few aesthetic changes outside. The R-Design cars will wear a more aggressive fascia up front, unique 18-inch alloys, revised sports seats inside and a few suspension tweaks to help everything stay planted through the twisties.

That means firmer bushings all the way around, a strut-tower brace up front and lower, stiffer coils on all four corners. The icing on the cake is a new corner traction control system that uses a torque-vectoring system to make for smoother cornering, a compelling feature that we just tested on the plain-jane S60 T6 all-wheel drive. Don’t look for any extra horsepower under the hood, though. Volvo has left the usual array of engines completely untouched. Both the R-Design S60 and V60 will debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show next month. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Ferdinand Karl Piëch, head of the Volkswagen Supervisory Board and grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, knows that nothing lasts forever – especially, life. The VW boss man has his mind on his money while his family has his money on their minds.

Piëch, born in 1937, has recently shifted his holdings into two Austrian foundations; Ferdinand Karl Alpha and Ferdinand Karl Beta. The reason behind this move is to protect the company in the event of his death. That’s to say, if he dies his family can’t start selling off shares like platinum hot cakes. His wife Ursula Piëch will assume control of the foundations upon his passing.

As stipulated in his will, the assets can be sold only when the managing board, the advisory board of the trust and at least nine of Piëch’s 12 children all provide a “yes” vote. As you would expect, some members of the family are a little miffed. Also, under the stipulations presented in the will, Mrs. Piëch is not allowed re-marry or divorce Ferdinand after he passes on. If she does go out and find a new hubby, she gives up control of the foundations.

Report: Toyota admits black box bug can give false speed readings

Takeshi Uchiyamada, Toyota executive vice president in charge of research and development, has confirmed that a software glitch has caused the company’s event data recorder readers to misinterpret speeds during accidents. According to Automotive News, the executive admits that his company had previously underscored the fact that it couldn’t say whether or not there was a problem with the black boxes themselves. The software bug in the readers came to light during the manufacturer’s investigation into instances of unintended acceleration. Even so, Uchiyamda (above, left) says that there’s no reason to doubt the rest of the readings from the EDRs.

Both Toyota and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration have found that in the majority of runaway vehicle cases, driver error has been to blame, though some incidents were caused by entrapped accelerator pedals.

Despite the problem, Uchiyamada has warned against using the EDR reader defect to discredit all of the data collected by the devices, noting that the glitch has since been remedied and that the rest of the readings accurately recorded.

Scott Speed takes his NASCAR taxi to Chicago – Click above to watch video after the jump

With the venerable Ford Crown Victoria on its way out, cabbies all across the country are being forced to come up with all kinds of solutions to their passenger-hauling needs. The Toyota Camry has a bit of favor with this crowd thanks to its roomy back seat, efficient drivetrain and inexpensive MSRP. Of course, all of that goes out of the window when you start talking about the NASCAR interpretation of the sedan. Red Bull recently decided to put one of its tri-oval terrors to work on the streets of Chicago as a cab, complete with none other than Scott Speed behind the wheel.

With a few additions like real headlights, brake lights, turning indicators and a license-plate bezel, the Number 82 Camry was handily transformed into a street legal machine. Speed spent the better part of a morning shuffling people around the streets of the Windy City in a blaze of tire smoke and V8 glory. It looks like plenty of fun, and we’re guessing there will never be another cab ride quite like it. Still, we think we’d rather end up in the Cash Cab. Hit the jump to check out the video.

It sounds like Rolls-Royce is looking to pull a few more Ghosts out of its hat. According to Bloomberg, the company has its eyes on doubling sales figures in a hurry, and part of that plan may involve more variants of the Baby Roller. As the second model line in the company’s stable, the Ghost has done plenty to generate growth for the company, primarily due to its smaller size and (slightly) more accessible price tag. The Ghost starts at $245,000, while the next step up, the Phantom, hits luxury buyers for a less manageable $380,000.

Rolls-Royce is currently producing around three Ghosts for every Phantom, thanks largely to increased interest in the brand from China. China has already moved up to become the company’s second biggest market after the U.S. – a slot formerly occupied by the UK.

Bloomberg didn’t offer much in the way of details as to what to expect from any upcoming Ghost variants, so full-line Rolls collectors will want to keep their Dom Perignon on ice for the moment. Stay tuned.

So many Porsches, so little time. Reports came in just yesterday that Stuttgart was planning an ultra-hardcore GT3 RS as well, but the German automaker has now announced an altogether different variant of its iconic sports car: the 911 Carrera GTS, which will make its official debut at the fast-approaching Paris Motor Show.

Recalling the original 356 and the three successive Speedsters to come since, the new 911 Speedster cuts a classic (if a bit awkward) hunchback profile and 60mm lower windshield. The wide-body stance is the same found on the Carrera 4 and the aforementioned GTS, with which it also shares (along with the similarly retro 911 Sport Classic) its 408-horsepower flat-six engine, driving the rear wheels through the company’s PDK dual-clutch gearbox.

Created by the Porsche Exclusive department, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, the 911 Speedster honors the 1950’s classic from which it draws its inspiration, with only 356 examples on offer. The unique shade of French racing blue comes standard, and continues on the rather, um… interesting two-seat interior, with Carrera White available at no extra charge.

Full details can be found in the press release after the jump, along with an initial batch of high-resolution images in the gallery below. We’ll get a closer look next week in Paris, but with such limited production, we wouldn’t be getting our hopes up about U.S. availability.

Here’s the production 2012 Range Rover Evoque in all its glory, and the LRX-inspired CUV is lighter, meaner and greener than anything to come from the Range Rover arsenal.

Buyers can opt for three exterior design themes: Pure, a minimalistic take with 19-inch wheels and natural colors complemented by brushed metal trim adorning the insides; Prestige, a “bespoke exterior” treatment with exclusive 19-inch wheels paired “an indulgent interior;” or Dynamic, with 19- or 20-inch wheels a reworked bodykit, and a sportier cabin complete with perforated leather seats and a bit more bling.

Inside, the interior is influenced not only by the Range Rover Sport, but by Jaguar as well. Seriously bolstered seats straddle a center tunnel where a rotary gear transmission selector rises to hand. The four-setting Terrain Response System dial has been replaced with buttons attending an illuminated menu and controls are mainly managed through an eight-inch touchscreen. Aural enjoyment is provided by the 825-watt, 17-speaker Meridian sound system with additional inputs for other peripherals.

Underneath the Evoque’s hood is a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that, naturally, is not called EcoBoost. Referred to as the Si4, it’s been developed for North American audiences and produces 240 horsepower that runs through a six-speed automatic transmission. Electric power steering is standard, a regenerative electrical system captures energy when things get hauled down and everything is kept on an even keel thanks to a MagneRide adaptive dynamics suspension.

Sales of the LRX start in the fall of 2011, and all the info you could want can be found in the press release after the jump, while dessert is in the gallery of high-res photos below. We’ll be getting even closer to it in a week’s time at the Paris Motor Show.

We’re still trying to stay on top of everything being officially unveiled next week at the Paris Motor Show, but it looks like we may also need to keep an eye trained on the LA Auto Show as well. Auto Guide is reporting that Kia will officially unveil the Optima Hybrid on the left coast, giving Hyundai’s smaller sibling an entry in the battery-assisted market.

The Optima Hybrid is sure to be powered by the very same 169-horsepower 2.4-liter Theta II engine mated to a 30 kW electric motor that thriftily motivates the Sonata Hybrid. If that is indeed the case, we expect the same impressive fuel economy figures of 39 miles per gallon around town and 37 mpg on the highway, along with an electric-only top speed of 62 miles per hour.

With a hybrid variant set to join the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter base model and the 274 horsepower 2.0-liter turbo variant, the Optima looks to be quite the upstart in the always competitive midsized sedan segment. The Optima Hybrid will reportedly go on sale early in 2011.
