Award winning 3-D filmmaker Eric Kurland has announced the launch of a new non-profit arts organization, 3-D SPACE: The Center For Stereoscopic Photography, Art, Cinema, and Education. 3-D SPACE will operate a museum, gallery, theater, library and classroom dedicated to both the preservation of the history of stereoscopic imaging, and the advancement of current and future 3-D arts and sciences.

“Thanks to recent advances in digital technologies, there is a renewed enthusiasm for 3-D content. From the record-breaking box office returns of 3-D movies such as TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY to the new public interest in virtual reality due to the upcoming Oculus Rift device, 3-D seems to be back in the spotlight,” says 3-D SPACE founder Eric Kurland. “But most people aren't aware that stereoscopic imaging has a very rich history that dates back to the 19th century. We want to create a center to celebrate the work of talented artists, photographers and filmmakers who have used the medium of 3-D as their creative tool, and to educate the public on the art and science of stereography, from it's analog beginnings in the 1830s to the immersive digital realms of the future.”

Kurland has over ten years experience in connecting the public to the 3-D community. “My work as President of the LA 3-D Club, the most active organization in the country for 3-D enthusiasts, as well as my professional stereoscopic credits (including 3-D Director for the Grammy nominated OK Go music video ALL IS NOT LOST, and Lead Stereographer for the Oscar nominated animated short MAGGIE SIMPSON IN THE LONGEST DAYCARE) puts me in a position to be able to bring all aspects of the 3-D spectrum together, from the fans, to the independent artists, to professionals working in the entertainment industry. I have assembled an expert advisory group that includes 3-D author, photographer and legendary guitarist for the rock band Queen, Dr. Brian May, Actor/Director Thomas Jane, and movie archivist and historian Bob Burns, among others.”

3-D SPACE has begun an internet-based fundraising campaign at www.3-DSPACE.org to support the initial preservation of the more rare and fragile materials in its growing collection and to secure a building to house the museum and educational center. 3-D SPACE plans to open to the public in 2015.

The KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival is in search of the newest 3-D stereoscopic animated shorts

This is a call to all 3-D stereoscopic animators! Nowadays visual media, especially film, cannot be imagined without the extensive use of stereoscopy. While the 3-D revolution advances further in every field, the (independent) animated short in particular keeps utilizing the technique in an innovative way, exploring its influence on and place in a films' narrative. The KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival has been following the evolution of stereoscopy with great interest and introduced a 3-D Stereoscopic Animation Competition to their international animation competition last year. The competition turned out to be a great success, leaving the audience in awe of the value that stereoscopy can add to a story. This year the KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival proudly organizes the 3-D Stereoscopic Animation Competition for the second time.

Among other competitions, the 3-D Stereoscopic Animation Competition for the KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival 2013 is accepting submissions until July 1st. So don’t forget to submit your newest 3-D stereoscopic animated short before it’s too late! Submitting is free. You can submit your animation either by sending a Blu-ray by old-fashioned mail or by e-mailing a plain simple (3-D!) YouTube/Vimeo link. A submission’s running time shouldn’t exceed 25 minutes and it has to be produced later than January 1st, 2012. Aside from the 3-D category you submit to, your entry will also automatically compete for the KLIK! Amsterdam Audience Award.

Commercial director Noah Shulman and artist Ion Popian collaborated on their first 3D film, an experimental piece titled “Genesis”. Stereographer Alonso Homs shot the 60p HFR shot in New York City in early 2013.

Ikuo Nakamura’s world-renowned 3D time-lapse films have a new addition with the 4K “ATMOSPHERE” featuring world images that include the Aurora Borealis. The shoot took place in the northern regions of Canada and includes sequences shot with a 5km (3 Miles) interocular distance.

Recognized by MovieMaker Magazine as one of "25 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee" and praised for its "focus on forward-thinking artists," BE FILM has presented more than 1,000 short films from more than 30 countries across the globe. I'm a big fan of Be Film, not only because they've premiered some of my own short films, but also because they were the first and remain one of the few mainstream short film festivals to play 3D films during the same screenings as 2D shorts, some of which have won Academy Awards.

Netflix begins streaming 3D movies

Today's announcement by Netflix is a game-changer. Something they're calling "Super HD" is now available on their streaming service. Oh, and 3D.

Currently 3D streaming is limited to ISPs in Netflix's Open Connect network in the US, and only a handful of titles are available. My own ISP is not part of this yet, so as of writing this I have not tested the service myself.

Netflix offering 3D is a major step towards the success of 3D in the home. While several 3DTV apps with indie content exist, and have content not available anywhere else, Netflix embracing 3D is good both for filmmakers wanting to reach a larger audience and consumers wanting to access 3D films without spending the high price point of Blu-ray 3D.

In early 2012 Netflix began enabling Internet service providers (ISPs) to receive, at no cost to them, Netflix video directly at the interconnection point of the ISP's choice. Now available through Open Connect partners, Netflix Super HD is the highest quality video format offered by Netflix, providing an even better picture on 1080p HDTVs.

In the U.S., Netflix is also for the first time offering a small number of titles streaming in 3D through Open Connect partners. Available for 3D viewing are, among other titles, the action fantasy drama "Immortals," Red Bull Media House's snowboarding documentary "The Art of Flight," and a number of titles from the Discovery/Sony/Imax joint venture 3net Studios - including the native, original 3D series "African Wild," "Scary Tales," and "Live Fire." Depending on member demand, Netflix will consider adding 3D titles and expanding availability to international markets.

NHK Media Technology proposes new 3D broadcast standard

NHK Media Technology announced a proposal for Advanced Stereo 3D, a new 3D broadcast format at CES. This new format has the advantage of two separate left/right streams at full HD, instead of the current side-by-side squeezed format, which has half the horizontal resolution of full 1080p. This would also allow the same broadcast to be watched in 2D on 2D TV sets. According to this video from DigInfo, NHK has submitted this to ARIB, an organization that determines broadcast standards.
