Every summer, the Salish and various other local Native-American tribes assemble in Boulevard Park.

The purpose of this gathering is to perform a traditional Canoe embarkation/disembarkation ceremony. The ceremony commemorates the peaceful coexistence between the local tribes in the past.

Furthermore, the local tribes honor their veterans who fought in past U.S. conflicts.

Various souvenir shops and samples of various Native-American cuisines are also available for tourists and locals alike wishing everyone a wonderful summer.

Remembering WWII

From Family

When I was young my grandfather would tell me disturbing stories about his experiences during the war. There were many times that I thought he was crazy. Only later did I find out that his experiences were in fact true and that many aging veterans are slowly dying off everyday.My grandfather was stationed in the Philippines during WWII. Just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, the Philippine islands were attacked forcing the 10,000+ U.S. troops (my grandfather included) stationed there to defend the islands.

They were poorly equipped, malnourished, and facing overwhelming odds. After months of fighting in early 1942 the majority of U.S. troops were forced to withdraw to the island fortress of Corregidor. By mid-1942 the starving and demoralized troops were forced to surrender. Especially since president Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordered General Douglas MacArthur to flee to Australia.The abandoned troops in Corregidor along with their Filipino allies were forced to march to their prisoner of war camps in the Bataan peninsula a few dozen miles away. This arduous journey would be known as the “Bataan Death March”.

After surviving a 6-month siege, these fellow Americans now had to march 90 miles north with an Imperial Japanese soldier beating them frequently and sometimes brutally killing some of the prisoners of war as they marched in the hot tropical sun with little food and water. Numerous War crimes were committed during the march to say the least, not to mention the crimes against local Filipinos that tried to assist the U.S. troops.

When they finally reached their prisoner of war camps, the remaining soldiers that survived the march were given horrid accommodations and little food as usual. Medical assistance was rare since the Japanese government at the time did NOT abide by the Geneva conventions when treating prisoners of war. Those that survived the death march were slave laborers for the next couple of years until MacArthur returned in 1944 and eventually liberated them.
My grandfather would survive the war and remain with the U.S. Army for a time earning the rank of staff sergeant. I only met my grandfather a couple of times and never had a chance to interview him in-depth. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 83. In the near future, I intend to visit my mother and a couple of aunts & uncles to compile old photographs and stories about my grandfather during WWII.
Let us remember our veterans because their sacrifices gave us the freedom and the country from which we live in. Over 250,000 American soldiers died during WWII, remembering them and honoring them makes sure that their sacrifices were not in vain.

LeBron to South Beach

Last week the NBA world was shocked as LeBron James decided to sign with the Miami Heat.

After 7 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 25 year old James decided to join forces with fellow 2008 Olympians Dwayne Wade & Chris Bosh who also decided to sign with the Miami Heat.

The Miami Heat has won the NBA Championship back in 2006, but has struggled during the past couple of years. That all changed last week when 3 of the best players in the NBA has committed to multiple year contracts with the organization.

Cleveland is of course devastated not only losing its best chance in winning a championship for the city, but it was its native son who decided to seek greener pastures elsewhere. The Cleveland Cavaliers was in the NBA Finals in 2007 but failed to win a championship. Furthermore, the Cavaliers has done poorly in the playoffs after 2007 possibly promulgating & eventually convincing LeBron to leave.

The man responsible for the rejuvenated Miami Heat team is probably Pat Riley who won 5 championships with the Lakers in the 1980s as a coach and another championship with Miami in 2006. The Miami Heat are now once again considered instant contenders for future NBA championships.

It seems that the U.S. National soccer team have been eliminated on the Second Round.

UFC 116

I decided to visit some old friends on Saturday (7/3/2010) in Seattle.
Other than the obvious Independence Day weekend, they were excited about something else.
It was about a new sport called “Mixed Martial Arts” or MMA for short.

I thought they were watching a World Cup game, instead they bought a Pay-Per-View event by the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) which is the major Mixed Martial Arts promotion in the World.

It is similar to boxing in many ways in that it has weight classes such as heavyweight, welterweight, lightweight, etc.

But the similarities end there, it also includes kickboxing, wrestling, judo, jiu-jitsu, etc.

The main event was no other than former pro-wrestler Brock Lesnar (champion) against Shane Carwin (challenger) who is undefeated with a (12-0) record.

The last time I saw Brock was in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) he has apparently found a new job and doing quite well. Prior to his pro-wrestling career Brock Lesnar was in the cover of Sports Illustrated as the NCAA Wrestling champion from the University of Minnesota.

To make a long story short, Brock won.
He is now considered to be the best heavyweight in MMA.
