Founded: Incorporated July 1994

Vision: To be Earth's most customer-centric company where people can find and discover anything they want to buy online.

If you are studying about eCommerce your study is not complete without reading about Amazon. What amazes me about amazon is their strategy. They are not like other companies who will become competitors. They conquered an industry (book publishing). They never competed, they conquered.

This company is spending lot of money, they are not worried about profits, margins and success. Every body knows about Amazon.com, Amazon Kindle Fire, amazon cloud and their web services. But there is more than what meets human eye here.

Amazon is also into several businesses which we are not paying attention. Like Music, Video, App store, Grocery distribution (Seattle, WA) etc.,

It has faster growth than eBay and Google on a scale of 5 years. Netflix, IMDB, foursquare, zynga, Yelp use Amazon web service. Amazon.com has 38% growth in eCommerce in the last year. Though the current cloud service is B2B, slowly they are rolling this out to customers as well. In the last 15 years, Amazon went from 1 category (books) to 15 categories.

They concentrate on relevance and end to end business. For example they have photo blogging website, photo sharing cloud services, camera shopping .com website. So in totality they are not letting you leave their premises. That is bringing diversity too. By the way 40+ % of the sales are international as well.

Some more interesting facts about Amazon are like, 24 items ordered per second, it has highest hits in one hour 630,000 on Dec 15th and 2.1 million products ordered in one day.

No wonder if people are comparing Jeff Bezos with Jack Welch and Amazon with GE of our days. Two best things about Amazon are Logistics and Information management. Last but not least, Information officer and Logistics officer are poached from Walmart in 1998.

IT vendor consolidation is the new mantra in IT efficiency. All the Fortune 100 companies either completed vendor consolidation OR in the process of completing it.

IT vendor consolidation supposed to provide below things.

Reduced costs

Improved Efficiency

Effective service delivery

Streamline the relationship management

Some of the consolidations that can be considered are as below

Help desk consolidation: Depending on the maturity, select the help desk vendor in your area. Unicenter from CA, BMC software are couple of famous help desk consolidation software's available in the market.

Hardware consolidation: For network Cisco and for Server IBM is the buzz word in the industry.

IT Services consolidation: Select any matured IT company, which is having efficiency in your domain. Indian IT companies can easily provide Banking, Financial, Health care, Retail IT services. But if you are looking for specialized fields like mobile computing, social network, mobile commerce then it would be difficult to get handful of vendors.

Some of the things you may have to consider before going for consolidation.

We would loose the flexibility

Vendors would not work well together.

Vendor lock in will reduce the Quality

Loss of pricing and bidding.

Whenever you are considering vendor consolidation, think about the business benefits you will be achieving through this. At the end of the day the parameter on the scale of success is "How well you are serving your customer".

Media means people, that means we change our opinions with an incident. I want to close this blog post with the story that tells about power of an Incident. One day a father and 3 children walked into a local train in New York. Children started making so much noise, it is causing inconvenience to others in the train. One guy told the father that he has to control his children otherwise he will complain to police. Father raised his head and said I just came out of the hospital, the mother of these children is dead. I don't know how to explain this to the children. The environment changed all of a sudden. The people in the train started looking at the children in sympathetic view.

So the attitude guy becomes visionary with an incident. But the matter of fact is he is both. We flipped the side due to strong incident.

World needs Jobs (Employment and Steve), unfortunately we don't have both.

The reason it was cost center all this while is, IT departments used to get grants from business. But now things are changing, IT departments not just reducing costs for business, it started generating income. IT department is the growth engine for any line of business like Retail, Health care or Banking.

CIO's role is now becoming more and more important every day. Executives and Boards started looking at IT department for their solutions, new ideas and key income generation.

In today's world eCommerce, social commerce, mobile payments, self checkout kiosks, Smart phone apps are changing the world pretty quickly. Businesses realized where their next big bucks are going to be. IT is grabbing the chair next to main line of business.

IT department is the missing business inclusiveness all this while. It aligns all your business much strategically in today's world. It is the value engine all the while businesses are looking for. You can't imagine effective marketing, advertisement, merchandising, supply chain departments without proper IT strategy.

For example, you can get more attention of customers with viral videos much better than traditional advertisements. Hope you didn't forget AXE viral video generating 2.1 million views which caused high increase in sales in the corresponding month. Reviews on internet are impacting sales. Companies are boosting their reviews on internet to get the customers.

If you are in retail you can't ignore social commerce and mobile payments. If you are in Banking you can't avoid internet banking. There are lot folks in today's world checking their decisions on search engines and deal apps on smart phones. I check in iPhone app Gasbuddy, before filling gas. I will surely check red laser or Shopsavy before buying something big. Deal-map and Groupon became part of every day life.

I call first phase V1.0 where businesses used to call IT as Value add. Now it is V2.0, If you are not improving your operations through IT and if you are not realizing good percentage of your sales from IT you will be surely out of business pretty soon.

This analysis is not about the comparison between different departments in business, it is about the rapid growth of IT department within businesses from value add to THE KEY department.

Some of the facts about health care costs in USA. These are collected facts from Business Insider magazine.

If the U.S. health care system was a country, it would have the 6th largest economy on the globe.

Profits at U.S. health insurance companies increased by 56 percent during 2009.

According to a report by Health Care for America Now, America's five biggest for-profit health insurance companies ended 2009 with a combined profit of $12.2 billion.

Between 2000 and 2006, wages in the United States increased by 3.8%, but health care premiums increased by 87%.

According to one recent report, Americans spend approximately twice as much as residents of other developed countries on health care.

The United States spent 2.47 trillion dollars on health care in 2009. It is being projected that the U.S. will spend 4.5 trillion dollars on health care in 2019

What the United States spent on health care in 2009 was greater than the entire GDP of Great Britain

Health insurance premiums for small employers in the U.S. increased 180% between 1999 and 2009.

Even as the rest of the country struggled with a deep recession, U.S. health insurance companies increased their profits by 56 percent during 2009 alone.

(iPhone, iPod, iPad, iOS) :-)

Our Hero, Mottu was slapped in the face early in the morning by his phone, you heard it right SLAP. This is new facility with iOS10.0 and iPhone 12. You will be slapped, if you snooze your alarm more than twice. He used iBrush to brush his teeth. It uses latest OS, so your friends on Facebook know at what time you brushed and how many teeth you covered. Updates are automatic, thats the fun part.

Similar to this, he gave his updates on Facebook and twitter using iShit, iBath, iBreak fast. The best feature is, it automatically updates photos and videos of all the above activities into your social networking. You can read comments from your friends later.

After using iDrive application Mottu reached office. This app will update the route you traveled. Well after busy day of iLunch, iSmoke, iSnack, he went home. Mottu used iLust app to find the hottest girl, its fun dating virtually with this app. You almost feel its real. You can select celebrities also in this app.

After kicking off iSleep app Mottu went to sleep, this app with update your snoring in the Facebook all through the night, so your friends can know how many times you are snoring.

Welcome to iHell !!! Dedicated this blog to Steve Jobs on the eve of Apple World Wide Developer Conference. Jokes apart, I am an iFan too.
Let's take the example of Walmart, the number one company in the world. Why is it Numero Uno ? I can think of below 3 reasons

1. It selling goods in a country where there is huge purchasing power and they look for cheap and best things for daily use.
2. It gets most of the things from the worlds unbeatable cheapest manufacturer, of course CHINA.
3. It completely outsourced its IT activities to India. Walmart alone give $1 Billion bill to the Indian IT companies.

That makes it Number 1 I guess. No need to mentioned the matured operation model over the year.

I guess this would be my last blog of the year. I don't want to write about what I gained or what I lost in 2010. I don't either want to talk about 2011. But I can tell you I am short of my goals. Take a break, chill out, life is long.

OK, thank you all for reading through my blogs. I will try to spend more time at blogging next year. Next year I will have some surprise (its all about blogging) for my readers. I am working on it, but no results yet. Lets hope things workout my way and I will continue enjoying blogging.
Believe me, thats true. Groupon said NO to Google $6 Billion deal. Yahoo said NO to Microsoft double the current value of Yahoo offer. So my friend what I want to say is, somethings are not for sale.

You can not turn down the aspirations of people. Just you have the power doesn't mean, I have to obey - Famous quote, doesn't remember the author. If you are working for your aspirations and passion, you will be satisfied even if you are a failure.

There is a dialog in a Hindi Movie - 3 Idiots. Madhavan (actor) tells his father. If you want me to become Engineer I might become 3rd grade Engineer. If you let me do Photography which I am interested, I will be at least 2nd grade photographer with satisfaction.

Most of the startups I read about they have a sale figure in mind. They start with selling price as destination. Some they tend to become the companies people respect for ever. It all depends on people around you in the board as well. So As far as my knowledge is concerned there are two important things for startup Niche and Goal. I believe 50% of the startups getting the niche right, but goal wrong. Please don't start a company with sale price in mind.

All the very best...

Any blog I write on these two things I fully enjoy. Having social presence is important these days as more business offers and identifications are happening basing on social network potential you have. Palm hotel in Lasvegas takes into count your KLOUT score to provide you extra facilities so that you can influence others in your network to go to this hotel.

Recently McDonald's offered discount for all Four Square users checking into McDonald's. I can see the trend growing. Next year we are going to see some more innovative things basing on Location based services and Social Networks. I was reading through some factoids on what makes you social expert. There are some parameters for this.

1. Your Google presence. Search on your name like "Surya Prakash Jayanti".
2. Your Twitter Followers. 90% of your followers are authentic. Remaining 10% will be spam. 2000 followers will qualify you for expert position.
3. Klout Score of 30+. My score is 21 :-)
4. 1000+ Facebook Friends
5. 500+ Linked in Network
6. Facebook Page of 250+ likes / fans.

Apart from this he should have presence in all other influential social media. No social media blog post is complete unless we talk about the evils of Social Media. Now every company has Social Media policy, including my current employer Infosys. Read through your employer policy on social networking. If you don't have time or patience to go through the policy follow simple tip, use your Commonsense, NOT your emotions.

I just looked at the video of new twitter avatar, its looking cool guys. You need NOT go to separate link to watch video or to see pictures.

Here are some fascinating facts about Twitter.

16% of new users are starting on mobile. There are on average 370,000 new sign ups a day overall.
90% of the information on Twitter is public.
90 million tweets a day
About 25% of tweets contain links
New rollout is launching worldwide. But it will be an incremental roll out before everyone gets.
160 Million Users currently

All the best for the new Twitter.com. I am eagerly waiting to see the updated twitter look. By the way am I going to miss "Fail Whale" / "Blue Whale" ?

Love you Twitter...

Disclaimer: Twitter can make you loose your job. If you have doubts check with Lalit Modi (ex-IPL chairman) / Shashi Tharoor. Author is not responsible for the side effects :-)

Indians and Chinese have the edge over the world because they are not just another fat ass in the world. Excuse my language. They can work their way off. This was the edge for India. Now its loosing its edge slowly.

The new generations aren't hard working any more. Now a days generations have enough deviations so that they can not concentrate on success. It was not the case earlier. They can work for hours together for their success. Now they are lazy, they don't want to do the hard work. They are talking about something called life, which equates to less money and more life.

On the other hand Chinese generations still fall under the category of stay hungry and work your way off. In the field of Software they have their Average work hours some where between 12-15. In India it is somewhere between 9-10. More and more companies are moving to China as the language barrier is getting closed. I believe its the threat of Govt, other than that China is filling every gap possible.

TCS started their 5 Development center in China. Infosys has thousands of workers operating from China. So my dear young friends in India, don't loose your edge. Hard work was your Investment. Stay hungry stay foolish.

It invested nearly $500M in social acquisitions. It bought Slide, Jambool for $200 Milliion and invested around $100 Million in Zynga. Since they are planning to grow is Social and it is the hot market. They started acquiring whatever they can in Social arena. Similar the case with Amazon, they bought Woot. They want to grow in online marketing division so they are doing the acquisitions.

I rarely saw any acquisition in Indian IT companies. When some one posed this question to Infosys, they said they are looking for the right fit. I am surprised they haven't got the right fit in last couple of years. There are many concept companies which can add value to their business. At least they can think of consulting or Integration or small product oriented companies. They have huge pile of cash.

I don't know if the company top bosses feel it safe to have their company reserves in bank rather than spending on acquisitions. It will take lot of time to grow organically. There is nothing wrong in mergers and acquisitions. HP and Compaq, Exon and Mobil, BP and Amoco, there are so many successful examples.

For example take Oracle or IBM they are buying every company in sight. They are growing huge. They have 360 degrees business now. If IBM eyes on something they wont leave the company until they buy it. I would like to see this kind of aggressiveness in Indian IT companies. Start pushing your reserves towards right fit acquisitions.

At the end of the day it matters you are Number 1 or not. It doesn't matter if you have grown organically or grown through acquisitions. History reads about No.1 not about ethical No.10s.

Well when the whole world is hyping on his iPhone he was blushing, now they are talking about its antenna he is cursing. Well you know Steve, its part of game.

From the beginning apple is famous for its designs and appeal, of course then performance. we can give benefit of doubt to Apple. Some how I feel Apple is over aggressive (we might call it arrogance). This is the kind of jolt I am expecting for Apple. Though I am fan of Microsoft, I respect Apple products. But its hard to bear arrogance, though we have lot of respect for its products.

You tried to prove the whole world has that antenna problem is a problem for all. But it is evident and bigger in iPhone 4. Remember your products were given more hype, so obviously they attack more if there is something wrong. Accept the defect and convey politely that you are fixing in next version. People will definitely understand. I think you need to learn some lessons from Toyota in crisis management. BP also dealt well with the recent situation. But somehow I feel Apple didn't handle this well.

So the conclusion is, holding Iphone 4 is like holding a girl. U touch her @ a wrong place she's gonna cut u off, & u'll always need piece of rubber to be safe.

As you all can understand from Twitter, Facebook, Linked-in, Foursquare etc., employees are in love with Social Networking. Of course, Social Networking is also getting benefits from employee updates. So its two way love. Then where is the problem? The problem is with girls parents always, that is employer in this case.

As parents try to control their children, Organization want to have control on employee updates into Social Networking. All big companies like Microsoft, Yahoo, Google and Apple are having the Social Networking policies in place already. Do you know all Hollywood stars contracts have Social networking clause ? yes they are NOT supposed to leak anything about the movie in their social networks.

So now these controls are coming to Consulting and offshore based firms. Recently NASSCOM asked Infosys to come up with Social Networking policies. Now Infosys is ready with that weapon, I mean Social networking rules and guidelines. They will be out by August. All other companies like Wipro and TCS will also coming up with their policies by year end.

You know the way BP is damaged with Twitter and Facebook. Boycott BP page on Face book has little around half million followers. BP satiric twitter account and quarter million followers. These are highlighted by TIME, NYT etc., So the point is Social Networking is double edged weapon.

Coming back to our Triangle love story, Employer want to have control on the Employees thoughts. Just the way in India Parents decide / control their children marriage. So now the girl needs to decide whether she wants to stick to their parents thoughts (in my story Employer controlling updates of employee) or want to decide her life basing on her thoughts (updating free flowing thoughts from employee into Social Networking). As always Indian girls stick to their parents, here in my story employees will stick to their employers guideline book. They will kill their free flowing thoughts.

Do you call it happy ending ??? May be ? May not be ? But thats the way it works :-)

The famous four social networking sites are Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and Orkut. Believe me this is the order of popularity. Can you believe even though there is so much hype for micro blogging sites like Twitter, still the blogs rule the content world.

Location based social networking like Yelp and Foursquare are also picking up very quickly. I have been using them, they are very useful. Future of Social Networking will be Micro blogging, Connections, Location based sharing.

As you know Social Networking can speak on behalf of you and make your brand name. People with similar interests will start coming together. Recently I came to know CFO of Oracle was recruited through his Linked in Contact. All the Fortune 500 companies executives are there in Linked-in.

Social networking became the basis of Judgement also. Some court cases in US started taking the comments on Facebook as basis for judgement. No second thought, Social Networking is powerful. But be careful. Here are some tips for your happy journey in social networking.

1. Never Ever share your personal information on social networking. Although you know this, its point to be reiterated again and again.
2. Keep the same id for all your connections. For example my id is JNSURYAPRAKASH in Orkut, twitter, Linked-in, Facebook, Blog-spot, yelp, Foursquare. Its easy for people to find you.
3. Express your Non controversial views, because your next employer might read the blog which you wrote one year earlier. Its historical, keep yourself clean. I know I don't have clean blogging history. I made some controversies in the past.
4. Your updates should be thoughtful and elevate your image.
5. Specific to Twitter, there are so many useless people like Celebrities. Rather follow the people in your career. Updates from them will be useful down the line.
6. In Facebook become fan of the pages of companies. It will be useful to keep an eye on the top companies in your line of work
7. In linked in join the groups related to your work. Those discussions will help you.
8. Use location based social networking to know the near by shops and deals. Its good for your pocket.
9. Have a happy branding !!!

You will be receiving so much of information. don't just read it, analyze and apply it. I read more than 1000 tweets a day, out of that, only 10 are useful. By the way 99% of the people I follow on twitter are Techies or Tech related companies.
Lets see the highlights of the justice...

Total cost of the justice is Rs 100 Cr (Approx)
Kasab, who is guilty is protected by 200 Indo-Tibetan Special Force.
166 People killed in the attack
They created separate under ground route between court and jail for his travel.

As everybody can expect he is going to get Death Penalty in this court. In 1993 Mumbai serial blasts verdict came just after 13 years. Comparatively this judgement is faster.

His trainers just spent lakhs and trained him, we paid in Crores and 166 life's. Do you think we won the battle ?

Kasab, can still go to High Court and Supreme Court. I cant imagine how many years it will take before he gets punishment. In fact the person who attacked on parliament is still waiting for his turn of death penalty. So Kasab you are just 22 and you are in queue, don't worry. You are assured of long life in India. Who knows if a flight is hijacked, he might get released. By the way our human rights groups are working to get an exception for you from death penalty.

Any way we got the justice, we can wash our hands.

Does a woman like Six Pack guy or Bulky Valet guy?
Both if possible.

Does a man like Beauty girl or Brainee girl?
First one is dream; second one just exists in imagination.

Do you like women?
I enjoy women.

Why do you write so much on women?
It’s never ending topic. They never stop talking; you can’t stop talking about them.

Define baby, Teen girl and Women in programming language.
Baby is integer variable. Teen girl is like string variable. A woman is complex variable.

What do you love about women?
Hate

What do you hate about women?
Love

Behind every successful man there is a woman.
I agree they are always behind successful man.

Can’t you write a single word positively about women?
I like beautiful women in bed, is that considered positive statement.

Without women world doesn’t exist, do you know that?
Ok, then try to create world without men. All the best.
