In line with the Proclamation No. 459 signed by the President Benigno S. Aquino III last August 16, 2012 posted at the Official Gazette, Malacanang officially announces the list of Philippine Holidays for 2013. Holidays were categorized in to three including Regular Holidays, Special Non-Working Days and Special Holiday that only suspends classes for schools in all levels. Here is the list of Philippine Holidays for 2013:

It will be considered as a Regular Holidays and Nationwide Special Days and will be announced via the Official Gazette of the Office of the President handled by the Communications Department.

Henry Sy, Sr. (born December 25, 1924) is a Chinese Filipino businessman with interests in retailing, real estate, hospitality, banking, mining, education including healthcare services. He pioneered the establishment of SM Malls, anchored by Shoemart Department Store and Supermarket earning him the title; the Philippines' Retail King. He is the chairman of SM Prime Holdings, Inc., the holding corporation for all his business interests in his vast business empire. In 2011, Forbes Magazine listed him as the no. 1 billionaire in the Philippines. Have you ever wondered why there is no Mercury Drug in SM Malls here in Philippines? well… here’s the story... Mr. Sy was a very ambitious man. He wanted to get rich more than 2 decades ago. He tried many businesses to get enough income but failed.

After trying so hard to make both ends meet; he finally have earned enough money to start a small business. Something crossed to his mind. He will build a small shoe store. He is also the owner of Chinabank and operator of BDO. Aside from his numerous malls, supermalls and supermarkets in the Philippines, he also owns 6 SM Malls in Mainland China, and 1 SM Mall in Guam.

Now he never lets a single Mercury Drug do business in any of his SM malls. Instead he franchised Watson's from Hong Kong which became the substitute for Mercury Drug.

The good thing about being employed is that you have something to look forward to every payday.

The bad thing about being employed is DEPENDING on the fact that you have something to look forward to every pay day. There's nothing sadder than that, I tell you.

What happens when your source of income just disappears? Unless you are an heir to a great fortune or you won the lottery, then chances are, it would be very difficult for one to get by without a major source of income.

So, what we’re trying to say is, appreciate the job that you have now and the fact that you do have a job compared to others who are suffering the wrath of unemployment. And while you’re at it, it pays to save money.

It's better when we were young and we're given those piggy banks for savings. It was a great feeling that when that piggy bank is full, we can get something out of it. But now that we're adults, we need more than piggy banks and we need savings that cannot easily be broken.

A lot of people do encouragement to save money, we all know it’s important. But knowing is different from ACTUALLY doing it. Some are very good at the start but lose motivation in the long run. It’s just like dieting. So for those who have a hard time in saving money, here are some money saving tips from us:

Set a percentage of your income, and spend the rest!
Say you have an income of P12,000 nett monthly, Set aside a percentage to that monthly income, say 10% which is P1,200.00 per month. This will be the portion that you will immediately set aside to put in your savings account. All the rest, you can spend without guilt. It’s like paying yourself first, which is better than scrimping on your expenses until the next payday. If you feel that 10% is low and you can actually save more, then you can also increase your percentage.

Make money saving automatic.
Automatic money saving will give you no choice but to really save. Without automatic money saving, one has the tendency to say, “I can always save next payday.” And obviously, this will become a cycle when the next time you plan to save, you will plan again to save the next payday, leaving you zero savings in the end.
There are several ways to do so. One is to ask your company if they do automatic savings deduction. When I was employed, I asked our Payroll to deduct automatically my set percentage and direct it to our cooperative (where I will also get dividends, benefits, etc.). If your company doesn’t have anything like this, you can go to the bank that handles your payroll account and arrange for an automatic savings plan. Some banks can automatically deduct a fixed amount from your salary and deposit it to a separate savings account. I believe BPI does this as BPI was the one who handles our payroll before. I am not sure with other banks.

Savings should not be accessible.
When money is easily in your hands, it’s easier to spend. We recommend that you make your savings account as inconvenient to get cash as possible. A good start would be to get a passbook bank account instead of the usual ATM savings. All banks have this where you can do over the counter cash withdrawals and some saving programs allow you to have limited withdrawal transactions but unlimited deposit transactions (BDO Optimum Personal Savings Account allows this).
Actually, there are a lot of banks that can give you several options. It’s better to weigh what’s for you. The point is you are FORCED to save money.

Avoid paying with credit card.
Credit card can sometimes be addictive with its accessibility. It feels so good to be able to swipe but it’s a different thing when you get your statements.
When you use cash or on debit (debit card), you’ll be more aware of your budget. Paying with cash will help you avoid accumulate debts and encourage you to live just within your means. Simply put, save first then pay in cash.
If you are vigilant with this, you’ll end up with zero credit and a savings account that you don’t have to use to pay accumulating debts.
And while we are at the topic of credit cards—it would be beneficial to just have one and not more than that. As online payments are very rampant and you might need credit cards for transactions, you can just have one. Having more than one will tie you up with a lot of payables monthly.

Be aware of small expenses.

Have you ever felt like asking, "Where did all my money go?" And the next thing you know, you're scrimping on what's left of your salary and wait for the next payday.
Back in the days, I used to write down everything I spend. It makes me aware of those small daily expenses that we do not mind at all upon spending but when added up, these are the things that drain your savings. Like for example, those little cigarettes or the taxi fares or those junkfood and chocolates that you include in your grocery list. You may also want to be aware that those cups of coffee at coffee shops takes a big chunk off your income, without knowing it. I am not saying that you have to cut out all those guilty pleasures totally but it helps that you make yourself aware of their impact on your savings.
Right now, there are a lot of free phone apps that you can download for monitoring your expenses.

Reward yourself for saving money.
All work and no play is no good. So set a benchmark and reward yourself for saving money once you reach that benchmark. Say, if you have saved P10,000.00, reward yourself with that blouse you’ve been eyeing at the mall (set a reward cost as well, that it won’t cripple you or your savings). Or, you might give yourself a fancy dinner or a movie after every five No Spending Days.

The 25 most difficult questions you'll be asked on a job interview - Part 2

1. Tell me about yourself. Since this is often the opening question in an interview, be extra careful that you don't run off at the mouth. Keep your answer to a minute or two at most. Cover four topics: early years, education, work history, and recent career experience. Emphasize this last subject. Remember that this is likely to be a warm-up question. Don't waste your best points on it.

2. What do you know about our organization? You should be able to discuss products or services, revenues, reputation, image, goals, problems, management style, people, history and philosophy. But don't act as if you know everything about the place. Let your answer show that you have taken the time to do some research, but don't overwhelm the interviewer, and make it clear that you wish to learn more. You might start your answer in this manner: "In my job search, I've investigated a number of companies. Yours is one of the few that interests me, for these reasons..." Give your answer a positive tone. Don't say, "Well, everyone tells me that you're in all sorts of trouble, and that's why I'm here", even if that is why you're there.

3. Why do you want to work for us?The deadliest answer you can give is "Because I like people." What else would you like-animals? Here, and throughout the interview, a good answer comes from having done your homework so that you can speak in terms of the company's needs. You might say that your research has shown that the company is doing things you would like to be involved with, and that it's doing them in ways that greatly interest you. 4. What can you do for us that someone else can't?Here you have every right, and perhaps an obligation, to toot your own horn and be a bit egotistical. 10. How long would you stay with us?Say that you are interested in a career with the organization, but admit that you would have to continue to feel challenged to remain with any organization. Think in terms of, "As long as we both feel achievement- oriented."

11. Your resume suggests that you may be over-qualified or too experienced for this position. What's Your opinion? Emphasize your interest in establishing a long-term association with the organization, and say that you assume that if you perform well in his job, new opportunities will open up for you. Mention that a strong company needs a strong staff. Observe that experienced executives are always at a premium. Suggest that since you are so well-qualified, the employer will get a fast return on his investment. Say that a growing, energetic company can never have too much talent.

13. Are you a good manager? Can you give me some examples? Do you feel that you have top managerial potential?Keep your answer achievement and ask-oriented. Rely on examples from your career to buttress your argument. Stress your experience and your energy.

14. What do you look for when You hire people? Think in terms of skills. initiative, and the adaptability to be able to work comfortably and effectively with others. Mention that you like to hire people who appear capable of moving up in the organization.

15. Have you ever had to fire people? What were the reasons, and how did you handle the situation?Admit that the situation was not easy, but say that it worked out well, both for the company and, you think, for the individual. Show that, like anyone else, you don't enjoy unpleasant tasks but that you can resolve them efficiently and -in the case of firing someone- humanely.

You might answer the question with a question: "Perhaps you can help me on this one. Can you tell me if there is a range for similar jobs in the organization?" If you are asked the question during an initial screening interview, you might say that you feel you need to know more about the position's responsibilities before you could give a meaningful answer to that question. Here, too, either by asking the interviewer or search executive (if one is involved), or in research done as part of your homework, you can try to find out whether there is a salary grade attached to the job. ‘I don’t want to die poor’

We definitely needed it in refocusing our directions.

Sylvia Banda was only 24 when she realised that if she continued with her job in the public service, she would, like many who have gone before her, die in poverty.

The 49-year old Sylvia with an investment capital of US$100 in her venture is now standing on the threshold of US$4.7 million hotel-and-lodge development, making her one of the most enterprising persons not only in Zambia but the region at large.

She reminisced: “The start of my business was not easy…challenges were many but what mattered most to me was a better future for my family, country and Africa as at large,” she told API.

Having left the poorly-paid job as a teacher 25 years ago, Sylvia ‘invaded’ her kitchen; she took away a stove, fridge, mealie meal, chicken, salt, cooking oil and the like. A proprietor of a warehouse in the city’s industrial area had agreed to allow her use his premises free of charge – perhaps thinking that she would not go far.

“The first day was funny. My small restaurant had no tables, no chairs, so I simply said to my customers, ‘welcome to a standing buffet’. Amazingly the first meal was all sold out”.

The next day, the woman whose government service monthly salary amounted to not more than US$ 150 (K500, 000), put the US$100 she had saved into the new business which was promising good returns.

Shortly afterwards, Sylva Catering was born. Within a year, she was running a full operational cafeteria with many outside catering orders.

But even under the cards of limited funds, Sylvia feared getting a bank loan because the then “49 percent interest rate was too high”.

She managed on her own, though. Today she has expanded her catering business to include a guesthouse, catering college, and cafeterias spread across the capital Lusaka. They operate under the banner ‘Sylva Professional Catering Services’ and is situated at the University of Zambia.

As you enter her office, you will be greeted by several trophies decorating her desk and shelves. In 2001, she bagged the Arch of Europe 20th century Award that she consecutively retained in 2004 and 2005. In the year 2001, she was honoured as one of the six most outstanding African entrepreneurs and in 2003, the American biographical researchers voted her as Woman of the Year. Not to mention a string of local honours.

In the recent past, she has ventured into the promotion of indigenous food. This includes dried pumpkin leaves and seeds, pounded groundnuts, dried black jack leaves, dried and fresh okra, among many others. These foods are packaged under the label Sylva Food Solutions.

“We package almost all known indigenous Zambian food and sell them in supermarkets besides putting them on our menu. We also do exports to countries like Angola Congo DR and Nigeria,” she added.

The promotion of indigenous food has been well received both locally and internationally. In 2005, she exhibited at the Japan-Expo.

Locally, it is no surprise that high profile organizations ‘queue’ up at her office for orders. Her clients include Unilever South-East Africa, British Council, hotels and lodges.

Professional bodies are also tapping into her knowledge. She sits on the boards of Zambia Chamber of Small and Medium Scale Business Associations, Vocational Training under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the newly instituted Zambia Development Agency.

In order to compare her achievements with those of the outside world, six years ago, she joined the US-based Professional Women’s Advisory Board. And in 2003, Sylvia toured Washington DC on a USAID educational and cultural programme.

“It is hard to accept that having started with almost nothing and without any loan, my business is being appreciated worldwide. This tells me that money alone is not a launch-pad for success but commitment, ability driven by vision,” she said.

Despite all these successes scored, her journey has not been devoid of challenges. The 1980s-90s unstable economy chorused by high inflation threatened her business. While trying to beat the inflationary effects, her customers complained that the products were too expensive. The other area is corruption.

“There are times when we have failed to get business from government institutions because our competitors opted to corrupt some official. But as God-fearing people, we cannot give kickbacks,” said Sylvia who together with her husband are devout Christians.

She added that costing mechanism of products is important in business. “We are not bothered by the pricing of our competitors. We would not change the price of a product merely because somebody is pegging the same at a lower cost”.

But what is the secret to her achievements? “God!” she emphatically responds.

“In whatever we do, we always put God first and seek His guidance.’

Last week, my U.S based client told me to find an affiliate program that will give commissions to every sales. I search on the wordpress plugin, I found one and I thought it will support wp-ecommerce since I prefer to use that since starting on my freelancer career. The plugin name simply reveals it's function it's called "Affiliates" I read on their website but at the bottoms seems they only support eshop,jigoshop and shopping cart developed by woothemes I think. They support wp-ecommerce but of course there's a corresponding amount for it.

There's a lot out there that will support wp-ecommerce but not free.. Lol. So I decided my client to recommend the Clickbank, this is the most powerful market place nowadays. Very simple yet secure, now I am waiting for his reply and his approval to proceed on Clickbank as affiliate marketing partner. This is really good for those who want to sell products online.

While reading a book (JG’s Life), I got a call (from other network) which I usually answer if it will last 3seconds. (assuming it’s an important call).

Sorry for my grammar,I’m not good in narrating a story, samot not good in phone conversation.. but hopefully masabtan ra. Shortcut ra ni nako but our conversation lasted for almost 10mins.

Me: hello
Girl: hello, good afternoon, is this mr. elmer diola? (very nice and angelic voice)
Me: yes, good aftertoon… who’s on the line please?
Girl: this is ms. Angela blah blah.… of Astoria plaza hotel, ortigas, manila. I called you to inform that you’re one of lucky person to have valentine dinner for two for free!
Me: answer me please where did you get my number? (mind boggling, I never stay in a hotel for the past 5 years..)

Girl: actually one of our guests which requested not to be named had chose you, just to surprise you and your partner this valentine’s day. He said that you’re an i.t expert…Blah.. blah..blah…
Me: (huh.. expert? Uh-ohh…wow surprising, who’s that generous man) did you know, I’m in cebu city.
Girl: don’t worry sir, you don’t need to come here in manila, are you familiar with cebu city sports club?
Me: yes

Girl: are you married sir?
Me: Yes
Girl: well that’s good please bring your wife and kids sir to complete your dinner date and blah.. blahhh..blah.. very nice words..
Me: ok, but our kid is in her tummy..(laughing….)
Girl: wow congrats in advance sir, please bring your wife. don’t worry about the expenses it all for free, you don’t need to cash out. . Can I ask the name of your wife sir and her occupation and the company name?

Inspiring Story About Investing

INVEST

One day, a man got lost walking in the desert.
The next day, he was still lost.
After two days under the scorching sun, he was dying of thirst.

All of a sudden, he saw a little wooden shed.
He ran to it, thinking of only one thing ---water!
When he arrived there, he saw an old, rusty water pump sticking up from the ground. He gripped the handle and began pumping like a mad man.

But nothing came out.
Disappointed, he stepped back to figure out how to make it work.

Looking around, he saw a jug covered with dust.
When he grabbed it, he saw a piece of paper stuck on it. The message read, "Open this jug and you'll find water.
Don't drink it. Pour it instead into the pump. Then you'll have all the water you want."

He popped the cork.
True enough, the jug was filled with water. Pure, thirst-quenching water.

Now imagine you're that thirsty man.
For two whole days, you haven't drunk water. Your mouth is so dry, your tongue is sticking to the roof of your mouth. You're literally dying of thirst. And you're now holding a jug full of water. But the message says that you should throw it away!

For a moment, your heart is torn.
What if the message was a joke? A cruel prank? What if you poured the water into that rusty pump and nothing happened?

But the man in our story chose to take the risk.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and poured the water.
He held the handle and pumped like crazy.
A few seconds later, torrents of water gushed out. Indeed, he had more water than he could ever need!

He drank to his heart's content. He also found water containers to bring with him in his journey and filled them to the brim.
But before leaving the place, he refilled the dusty jug with water.

And underneath the sign attached to it, he scribbled, "I tried it. Believe me, it works."

YOU HAVE A CHOICE:

DRINK NOW or DRINK FOREVER

This is a great picture of why people are poor.
The money that you hold now, no matter how small, is like that jug of water. And you always have a choice: you can drink now or you can drink forever. You can have money now or have money forever.

How? By investing.
A lot of people don't invest.
They spend whatever they have.
I've met people who earn P10,000 or 50,000 or 500,000 a month ---and they spend everything. (Yes, I've met a lot of high-income but poor people!).
That's why their money pump remains dry. And they'll remain poor forever. It really doesn't matter how much people earn. What matters is how much they invest.

Investment is crazy decision.
It's a crazy as pouring that last jug of water into the pump.

Friend, you have money now.
It may be small but you have it.
And you're standing in front of a money pump.
Actually, you have three money pumps:
*Business: traditional, franchise, networking, etc.
*Property: rental property, buy and sell, etc.
*Paper: bonds, mutual funds, stock market, etc.

But today, I'd like to focus on the "paper" money pump.
Not everyone can start a business right away.
Not everyone can buy a property right away.
But almost everyone can invest in paper assets.
Friend, you have a choice.
Will you simply consume your little money?
Or will you pour it into the money pump? -- so that it produces more money for you?

I call this sowing in times of famine.

Cebu-Negros hits 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake

It's not a good start for the month of the hearts, it's pretty bloody disaster happened here in Visayas region. It was 11:41a.m when the earthquake strikes. I am online at that time, I noticed that the speakers are shaking, first I thought it was ok but seconds after the house started to sway so I opened the door and ready to run to the open ground if worst things comes and thanks God it took only 10-15seconds.

If the tremors lasted for about 1 minute I don't think the damages and the count of casualties. I'm also worried for the tsunami since the memories on the worst Japan's disaster last year is still fresh on my mind. I turned on the TV and it's on the news, opening the facebook is much more updated since the prioritized segment on that day is the bullshit fu^king impeachment trial on CJ Corona which is nonsense and eats a lot of time and money. The calm begun when the USGS, Phivolcs and DOST issued that the epicenter is in between the Cebu and Negros Island. Thanks God for the impossible tsunamis happened here in Cebu and Lapu-Lapu City.

So far in Cebu City, no major destruction aside from cracked walls on E-Mall and SM City. For now I'm worried about the reported landslide in Negros Oriental, particularly in Guihulngan. Let's Pray for them. More updates will be posted here.

Why Do Some People Failed to Accept Change?

What's with world? When you introduce new ideas, share the knowledge but why do some people will ignore and don't accept it? In fact, they will contradict and bark everywhere for example the re-routing scheme to minimize traffic on that certain area. Remember this is good for the people in general but you cannot expect all the commuters to agree. But later on they started to keep silent and appreciate.

Yesterday, I shared my knowledge on one of my friends on how to manage his wealth and where to invest since I know a lot on this field since I am a registered broker and financial adviser and also a crusader on how to end up poverty on our generation. Our conversation goes like this, he's planning to invest his money and I asked him on what kind of business and he answered, I will have to think about it. So, since we're friends in college years, I want to help and assist him and of course it's free but he answered. "Anyway thanks, but I have to explore for myself." Is it really hard to believe an advise from your friend?

Got vacation plans next year? Maybe you can schedule them around the 6 long weekends for 2012 based on the official list of regular holidays and special (non-working) days from Malacañang.

The first long weekend will be on January 21-23 after Malacañang declared January 23, Chinese New Year, a special non-working day.

The next long weekend will be during Holy Week, lasting 5 days from April 5-9.

April 5 (Holy Thursday) and 6 (Good Friday) are regular holidays. These are followed by a weekend, April 7-8, while April 9 (Araw ng Kagitingan) is also a holiday.

The next long weekend will be on August 25-27. August 27, National Heroes' Day, is a regular holiday.

There is a four-day weekend at the start of November after Malacañang declared November 1 (All Saints' Day) and November 2 (All Souls' Day) as special non-working days.

At the end of November, there will be another long weekend after Bonifacio Day, November 30, was declared a regular holiday. November 30 falls on a Friday.

Finally, the last long weekend for next year will be on December 29-31, with December 31 a non-working day.

There are 4 holidays that fall on a Tuesday: May 1 (Labor Day), June 12 (Independence Day), August 21 (Ninoy Aquino Day) and December 25 (Christmas).

Proclamation No. 295 also states that Malacañang will declare holidays for the observance of Eid'l Fitr and Eidul Adha after the approximate dates of the Islamic holidays have been determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar or the lunar calendar.

Eid'l Fitr is expected to be on or around August 19, 2012 (Sunday) while Eidul Adha will fall on or around October 26, 2012 (Friday).

Cebucyling Lapu-Lapu members decided to join the Mandaue City and Cebu City Members to assault the mountain bike haven in Cebu, it's the right time since it's a holiday (Bonifacio Day, in honor of Andres Bonifacio). Waking up early as 4:00am is very unusual but I am excited to go with the team I want to try the mixed-up of deadly uphill and technical downhill.

This is my longest come back ride after 2 months of hibernation, I almost swallowed my tongue just to grasp some gas on the first 20KM. I'm familiar with the trail since I've passed that many times but on the reverse mode, from Ayala Heights (Kan-irag Nature Park) down to Guba-via Pulang Bato. But this time it's another experience, it's more on uphill but I am proud coz I can maintain my speed at 9-10km/hour not bad for the come back ride. My computer registered 12.4 (Average Speed), 58.7(Maximum Speed) which I got this during the downhill heading to Kan-irag Nature Park with the Total Time of 3:32:15.

Thanks God for the nice weather, Boss Jun for the hitched, we saved a lot of energy for it. To Vince Sta. Elena and Sir Tony Dimataga, for our best bike clinic last Sunday. Yeah, it really works I'm looking forward for the next session. Thanks so much for the tips, it works well. I am lucky I did not feel any pain after the ride, now I am more in love with my Corratec Baco X-Vert, my hard tail but works well on the dirt road and downhills.

The experience is very awesome, such as the downhill from Sirao to Kan-irag Nature Park, a very wide plain road where you can go anywhere you want. But the best thing is the Kan-irag Trail, I really like the technical part at least I am now confident to face the challenges. Thru my 2 mentors I learned a lot from them, it's really effective. Looking forward for my second time ride on the same trails. Thanks for inviting me to be a part of a very large group approx. 40+.

Trying Hard Blogger Turns Into a Fulltime Freelancer: First Encounter to Visayas Blogging Summit

I started blogging on early 2008, I don’t have any intention to make an eye catching post coz I don’t have enough power to sustain on composing long write-ups, my purpose is to share my photographs from different places in the since I'm always traveling. Sharing my itineraries and tips on how to save, in short I am a budgetarian traveler :).

I don’t have any mentor to ask for a help but only Mr. Google.com, I started to apply my basic knowledge and I keep on learning everyday. Though I called to myself that I am a trying hard blogger. Until I decided to purchase my own domain which is advantageous than using a free domain. From that time, I am searching on how to monetize my blog just to pay the renewal of my domain. So I tried different affiliates but no luck, until I got an offer on paid post, I was so happy for that though it’s just a little amount but it’s more than enough on my investment which is the domain name which cost around $12.00. I keep on searching the alternative way to earn more and my target is sustain my monthly bill on my internet connection. So I put some pressure to myself not to deduct from my regular income (fulltime in-house call center employee). And luckily I got it since the paid post company is keep on sending me some task to post on my blog. And not only that, last July 2010 I got a very nice offer that is hard to refuse, an internet marking based in the U.S. offered me to be one of their employees and have a regular salary. At the first 2 months I work it as a part time but it seems like I’m killing myself since I only have 2-3 hours of sleep. At that time I earned big on my part time compared to my fulltime job, so I decided to give up my work and become a fulltime freelancer, so far no regrets and I love my job. Currently I am working as wordpress developer/e-commerce and seo analyst.

To cut the story short, I love doing some internet stuff and my life begun to always connected to internet though I consider myself still a newbie as I keep on learning everyday. I have a college friend named Agnes(empressofdrac.com) and she’s an active member of Cebu Bloggers invited me to join the bloggers gig in Cebu but I feel shy since I cannot compete to their write-ups :( . (inferiority mode)

I joined their facebook fanpage but I don’t bother them even in a single post but I keep on reading their updates. And now I never let pass this opportunity to join Visayas Blogging Summit 2011 since this is hosted in our own city. Thanks for the organizers and sponsors for this great event.
