ECHO PARK - Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell will host a block party to celebrate the ceremonial relighting of the iconic sign perched on top of the historic Jensen’s Recreation Center on Sunset Boulevard.

A community celebration and ceremonial ‘flipping the switch’ will take place on Friday, October 27, 5-7 p.m., on the north side of Sunset Boulevard at Logan Street, next to the Lassen’s parking lot.

Built in 1924, Jensen’s Recreation Center (1706 Sunset Boulevard) is an early 20th century mixed-use property featuring 46 residential units and pedestrian-oriented retail space. The building originally featured a bowling alley and billiards parlor on its ground floor, and recently underwent renovations including rehabilitation of the rooftop sign.

The 17’x28’ animated sign, which reads “Jensen’s Recreation Center,” depicts a bowler throwing a strike. The sign contains 1,300 red, green, and white light bulbs, and is billed as the last remaining articulated incandescent sign of this type and size in the United States. The sign has been inoperable for most of the past 50 years.

The building was one of the first in Los Angeles to feature a mix of residential and entertainment uses and was declared a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument in 1998.

Pizza Buona that was at the corner of Sunset and Alvarado

is coming back.

In business since 1959, they closed last December due

to a large increase in rent.

Yesterday on their Facebook page they posted this update:

The Whisperer, Echo Park's New Spot

In the space that many years ago was home to Phoenix Bakery,

and previously was Red Hill,

A new and beautifully remodeled Lounge with food has opened.

We tried it last night, and they are doing some great things with comfort food.

First off, the Wine and Beer list are well thought out with an extremely

nice selection. A nice mix of Italian, Spanish and California wines, by
the bottle or glass. Also a large selection of beers on tap.

We tried the Patti Melt and the Ribs which were delicious.

The sauce for the ribs was not your typical barbecue sauce, it was a

blend of spices that really went well with the nice portion of pork ribs.

The Patti Melt was a blend of Brisket, Chuck and Sirloin, all I can

say is Wow!

The room has a very cool vibe to it, and the atmosphere is sophisticated
and fun.

The decor was well thought out, even the outside patio has been redone.

I can't wait to go back and try some of the other dishes.

If you are in the area, it's a nice place to check out.

There's a new kid coming to the block.

Blue Bottle Coffee.

It will be opening in the historic Jensen's Recreation

Center on Sunset in downtown Echo Park.

There is already one in the downtown

Arts District and one on Abbot Kinney in Venice.

This is an Oakland based chain.

As per Blue Bottle's site:

"We roast coffee on vintage gear, put it in compostable bags, and still get it to our customers

within 48 hours. We roast great coffee on two coasts,

make great drinks, clean up after ourselves, bake cookies, type up invoices,

get change at the bank, and say please and thank you.

We offer the elderly and pregnant our seats on the bus and brush and floss daily.

Sunset Pacific Motel/Bates Motel

is getting a coat of white paint, including the trees.

Vincent Lamouroux, a French Artist is giving the long closed and

run down place a dusting of white prior to it being torn down

to make way for an apartment complex.

This is what it looked like prior to the paint, closed for years.

It sits at 4301 W. Sunset Boulevard in Silverlake
