Cecy Young - Interview - Innocent faces

I had the pleasure to study with Cecy in Paris and she is now one of my favorite young fashion photographers. I am convinced we will be seeing a lot of her work in the future and of course I hassled her for an interview.

Name: Cecy Young

Age: 24

Place: Paris/Mexico

Education: BA in Arts and Speos Paris Photographic Institute.

FD:Where have we seen your work?:

Cecy:Some magazines and blogs.

FD:Where do you get your ideas from, what inspires?:

Cecy:Soap operas, 50s cinema, children stories, glitter, movie posters, girls, old comics about cheesy love, 70s colors, everything about nature, horror movies, impressionist paintings and art in general, the 90s television which is just brilliant.

FD:What's your normal process from idea to photograph?:

Cecy:Get a small idea, it can be anything either from a location I saw or a girl I like. Then, sit down and really plan it, make some notes and drawings, get some visual references from other sources. I make some scouting of the location depending on the idea. Then, I choose the colors, the makeup and the clothes along with a team of stylists and make up artist.

When I contact the model agency I try to be very specific about the type of girl I am looking for. I usually go for long hair, pretty mouth, innocent eyes. Depending on the mood I choose the type of lighting, usually if its not in studio its natural. And then the day of the shooting I always carry a small post-it around with the things I want to do so I don't get carried away with the scene and forget something.

After the shooting I have to let the pictures rest a little while before going through them. I do the selection based on the story. For the retouch I do (a lot) of tests of color depending on the idea I had. I create actions so all the pictures look the same way.

FD:How do you go about getting noticed in the giant city of Paris?:

Cecy:I don't know, how? Its not easy, but it also happens very randomly and sometimes its all about luck. I think that by going out and networking with the right people, people that are in the same field, publications, editors, MUAs, stylists, models… and trying to show your work around. Its more easy now because everyone goes on the internet. I once met a great stylist (and now good friend) through Craiglist.

FD:What is your favorite frame that you have shot?:

Cecy:Its always a really old one or the newest one… currently is this one. ---------------->

Its funny because I didn't saw that photo right away, it happened months after when I was going through my pictures and deleting some files to make space in my computer and I noticed that one, so I began to retouch it and play with the colors, and I really liked the final result.

FD:Where do you find your models?:

Cecy:I used to meet people and if I liked them I would ask them to pose for me, but now I only work with models from agencies, I get to select from different options.

FD:What is your proudest moment as a photographer?:

Cecy:When people I admire tell me that they like my work.

FD:What's the plan?:

Cecy:I expect to work better with the model, the light and the stories, and to be more disinhibited & show a stronger vision.

Work in a personal exhibition, get an agent in France, and publish more in international magazines.

FD:I actually assisted at this shoot... I sat on a park bench and drank beer with Cecy's boyfriend... and occasionally carried equipment around the park.

Byron Spencer - Interview - Fun and cool fashion

Byron Spencer is a new Frame Discovery favorite. It's been a while since I had so much fun browsing a young photographers website. The styling, use of color and the diversity keep you interested and wanting more.... so of course we have an interview!

Education: high school and a musical theatre course! Haha.

Where have we seen your work?:

Byron:I don't know that's hard! I have really focused heavily on party and street style photography in the past but am now making the transition into fashion, so it varies from so many different kinds of mediums! Hopefully you can see it in lots of places.

FD: Where do you seek your inspiration?:

Byron:I am inspired by a feeling... I'm inspired by music, film, by fashion, by a model, by a location. I don't really seek it, it just will come.

FD: What makes a good photo?:

Byron:A photographer who doesn't doubt his/her style.

FD: The models, without exception, look so cool, do you pick the clothing and the style?:

Byron:yea most of the time I style my own shoots, I really like choosing the styling I find the process fun and often the fashion I choose will inspire my shot.

FD: How do you stay on top what's going on in fashion?:

Byron:I am a bit clueless with current trends, but I know what I like and I have a lot of amazingly inspiring people around me.

FD: What's your favorite frame that you've shot?:

Byron:This one of Zippora Seven could be my favorite. We went down to bondi with the intention to shoot this shot but on the way got in a small car accident that led to fire engines, police, tow trucks and an oil spill. But we still went and fed the seagulls and got this!

FD: What is cool?:

Byron:Genuinity

FD: What's the plan?:

Byron:To go with the flow. See what happens and keep on working...........and get rich.

As some may know I (Thordur Sveinsson) am not only the editor of Frame Discovery but also a photographer. I recently did a series with a fellow student, Nick Howe. We got clothes from a young design student, Jessica Murat and shot with two wonderful models.

Faye Sampson - Interview - Attitude and Cool

Where have we seen your work?: Various fashion magazines (over twenty in 2011) including Slave, SÝN and AVA and online blogs including The Fashionisto and Ballad Of.

FD: Who are your favorite photographers?:

Faye: There are so many photographers who inspire me, we would be here for a very long time if I was to mention all of them! I recently discovered the work of Bruno Dayan and I fell in love instantly, I actually found myself squealing in awe at the skill and beauty behind each shot. Melissa Rodwell is a long-time favorite of mine. Not only does she create breathtaking images, but her blog tells the truth about the industry and the good and bad experiences she has, rather than painting a picture of perfection. She is always true to herself, focusing solely on the shoot and the images rather than getting caught up in the glamour of the fashion world. She is a huge inspiration to me.

FD: What makes a good photo?:

Faye: I love photos which emote, I want to look at an image and feel something. When a picture evokes an emotion in me I consider it to be a good image.

FD: How do you stay on top of what going on in fashion?:

Faye: I read fashion magazines and obsessively check fashion blogs. I have regular meetings with my creative teams (stylists etc.) to discuss the current trends and to throw around ideas on how we can integrate these into our shoots.

FD: It has been a male sport for decades... do you think the girls are taking over fashion photography?:

Faye: I would love to simply say “yes”, but the truth is we still have a long way to go! I think that girls still have a harder time getting the male-dominant industry to trust us, which is especially the case for young female photographers. I can see a day where females are equally as prominent in the industry, but I feel that it’s going to be a gradual change.

FD: What is your favorite frame that you have shot?:

Faye: I really like the shot below from my editorial “Red Herring”. The original idea behind the shoot was “Little Red Riding Hood gone wrong”, so I knew I wanted to have two models in sweet little dresses and capes, but I wanted the viewer to feel that something about the girl’s behavior was not so sweet, that they had an almost twisted side to their personalities. The shoot was just so much fun, both models were amazing and we all had a great time, despite the cold, drizzly November weather! The shot below was particularly fun to shoot; we were all suppressing laughs as the MUA threw berries over the models. I like the broken feel of the girls given off by the positioning of their limbs, it definitely fits the twisted red riding hood feel in my mind.

FD: What's the plan, the goal.... the dream?:

Faye: I am a massive dreamer but I like to take things one step at a time, so for the meantime I’ll simply say that I wish to be a respected, established fashion photographer.

How to make a good fashion photo - A few suggestions

I have been asked to do a post on how to make a good fashion photo. Even though I'm not a certified expert of experts I know a few basic things that can be good to have in mind when planning to do a fashion shoot... and like the photo above tells you, if you get really good like Mario Testino... Kate Moss will draw a moustache on your face... now who does not want that?

-Explore new things.

Don't shoot down your own ideas, write them down, visualize them. Take a look at them few days later and you will see them differently and more clearly. Then you can separate the good ones from the not so good ones.

-Build a mood board.

Cut photos from magazines and browse online. Find photos that represent the mood you're looking for, the lighting, the makeup and hairstyle. It really helps to have something visual and graphic to look at when you're working on your idea rather then just words on paper. You're a photographer, use images.

-Find a good model.

That's what many young photographers fail to do. A pretty girl does not necessarily make a good model. A good model knows how to move in front of the camera, work with the atmosphere and work her angles… and believe it or not, a beautiful face is not always photogenic. Sad but true. Of course when your doing your first shoots it's good to start with a friend when you're figuring out how to work with lights etc. (and if your lucky your friend is a good, photogenic model).

-Makeup and hair.

Do not underestimate the power of a good makeup-artist. They can work wonders and really bring out the models best features and also create interesting effects… and you also don't want the hair to be a mess… if you do, at least make it a controlled mess (if you know what I mean.)

-Get a stylist.

A good stylist is invaluable to a photographer. While you may be concentrating on getting the perfect light and the right framing, the stylist is constantly looking at the model, the clothes and the set, making sure that everything is in place and looking it's best. If you're lucky you have a resourceful stylist that can help in pre production when finding clothes, accessories and props.

-Be confident on set.

You are the boss. It's up to you to keep the team working, the model happy and make sure everybody is doing all they can to create the best photo possible. Stand up straight, smile and be friendly. Even if you are nervous and don't have a clue what to do next, don't let the model see it because that will most likely cause her to lose confidence in themselves, you and the project. So suck it up, be cool and be in charge. Every problem can be fixed (and you most likely know how). But don't be afraid to get the opinion from other members of your team… because it's a team and everybody wants to create something really, really, ridiculously good looking.

-Put on some music.

We all love music, and it puts us at ease. Preferably, ask the model what kind of music she likes, plug in her iPod and crank it up. A happy model delivers better images.

-Don't forget about the clothes.

Young photographers tend to pay too much attention to the model and forget about the clothes they are shooting. Don't forget, fashion photographers job is to sell clothes and make them look good. Study the light. Is it bringing out the fabrics best features can you see the texture?

-In photoshop

When you start working on your favorite images it can help to write a list for the things you need to to in post-processing. Just a little checklist like, fix exposure, skin retouching, cloning dust… that kind of stuff. And don't overdo it, people are not made of plastic and should not look like plastic on photos.

and lastly…

Experiment and have fun... worst case scenario, you're not completely happy and you try again.

Steven Klein - Editorial - Institutional White

Why are insane asylums with pretty women so interesting....? Don't know, they just are. They occasionally turn up in fashion and movies such as Girl Interrupted and Sucker Punch. Steven Klein takes this theme to the extreme for Interview Magazine and are some of the images on the verge of being disturbing.

But I am a fan of different, disturbing and provoking things and that's why I bring you this glorious insanity called "Institutional White"

Joel Sosa - Interview - Freedom, style and youth

As some may have noticed I have a thing for photos that portray youth, freedom, fun and good style. Though Joel Sosa is not a fashion photographer in the strongest sense, his photos are stylish, cool and relevant. Fashion is not all seen on the runway shots and editorials, it's everywhere... well most places, and definitely in Joel's photos.

FD:Who is your favorite photographer?:

Joel:Nan Goldin

FD:How do you stay on top of what going on in photography?:

Joel:I dont know if im on top.. you know.. i just shoot moments from my life.

FD:What makes a good photo?:

I think what makes a good photo is what this transimite, if you manage to capture this key moment of joy, freedom, happiness and when you see that photo again you experience the same feeling that you feel in the first moment then it is a good photo.

FD:What is your favorite frame that you have shot?:

Joel:Well, I have not really a favorite photo, usually the last I'm doing I like more than the previous ones and so on, always try to improve so ... but I have a picture called "the truth" which for me means the way we humans live today, hiding who we really are following the rules of a powerful all-seeing, because if we show who we really are or do what we really want is considered bad ... thats why the horns that means a symbol of evil… and behind the eye that sees everything ... it's all around us as humans and nature, air, earth, fire ...

FD:What's the plan, the goal.... the dream?:

I would like to be traveling all around the world following the sun, taking some shots for important magazines. That's the dream.

Hong Jang Hyun - Fashion - Korean pastel paradise

Everything is turning pastel... clothes, make-up and especially hair. I actually quite like this trend, it's fun, subtle and easy on the eyes. Not screaming and eye-stabbing. Korean fashion photographer Hong Jang Hyun shot these covers and the editorial for W Korea. So... enjoy, because apparently the koreans know how to do it.

A photo does not have to be a "fashion photo" to be fashionable. Tatiana Leshkina is not a fashion photographer, but the clothing plays a really important part in her work and helps create the desired mood and effect. That's why I felt the need to contact her, learn more about her and share with my readers. She has a great talent for shape and composition and uses it to create these beautiful images.

Yougo:Of course I'm not, maybe it's why some people from the fashion industry like my photos because it's different and because I don't care about fashion.

FD:What is your favorite frame that you have shot?:

Yougo:I'm not satisfied of my photos for the moment, I always want something crazier. But recently I had a shoot with Marcel Castenmiller, and I'm really happy about the photos.

I was supposed to shoot him in 20 minutes, but we got along really well so I stayed longer and had the opportunity to talk with him about stuff we both like.

Ryan Handy - Interview - Pastel fashion etc.

FD:Where do you seek inspiration and ideas for your photography?: Ryan:Old fashion photos from the 50's and 60's, magazines like Papercut Magazine, other photographers like Damon Baker and Lara Jade, films and beautiful locations!

FD:Who are your favorite photographers?:

Ryan:That's hard! Patrick Demarchelier, Damon Baker, Steven Meisel and Lara Jade to name a few.

FD:How do you stay on top of what going on in fashion?:

Ryan:Read blogs, magazines and talk to other creatives!

FD:It has been a male sport for decades... do you think the girls are taking over fashion photography?:

Ryan:There are definitely more female photographers now than there were 20 years ago. I've heard male photographers say it's because cameras are easier to use now! But I just think photography has just become more popular in general and female photographers like Lara Jade has inspired young girls and proved that girls can make it in this male dominated industry. I don't feel like the ladies are taking over though - Us chaps can still produce beautiful pictures, just like Avedon, Bailey, Testino, Rankin, Demarchelier and many more have always done.

FD:What is your favorite frame that you have shot?:

Ryan:This one! For me I like it because it's so strong and in your face, yet beautiful and simple at the same time. And I love all the colours! It has become my most talked about photo. I came up with the idea of using wigs and pastel colours just after Christmas and them noticed pastels were the new trend. So I thought great, lets hurry up and shoot this before anyone else! I contacted the fabulous make up artist and friend of mine Karla Powell and we got to work organising and refining the concept. I remeber taking the photos and thinking WOW these are going in my portfolio!

FD:What's the plan, the goal.... the dream?:

Ryan:I want to become one of the best, most well known and respected fashion photographers of this century. But for now I'm working on producing an exciting and deverse portfolio I can be really proud of. Once I'm happy I'm going to approach photographic agencies and hopefully that's when my career will really start.

FD:Where have we seen your work?:

Sarah:I feel like I have been working 'underground' for a very long time. I am hardly published in printed media and I haven't been exhibited in a gallery in many years. I attribute my lack of exposure to my fear of failure/success- and my completely passive stance to exhibiting my work. It is very hard to be both the artist and the salesman. I have been trying recently to break my ways by taking the initiative to promote my work more, and open myself up for feedback.

FD:Why do you choose to express yourself through photography?:

Sarah:I find using reality as a medium to be endlessly interesting and limitless. I started painting as a teenager, and when I got to my 20's I was frustrated with my inability to render things with the depth and accuracy as they appeared in my mind's eye. So I started building installations and constructing sets, using the camera to capture the scene I was seeing in my imagination.

FD:Where do you get your inspiration from?:

Sarah:Music is the biggest inspiration for me. When a I hear music that harmonizes with me, I can't help but fall into a trance... A sort of vivid daydream that takes over. That's where my ideas come from.

FD:What kind of music?:

Sarah:I love so many different kinds of music - from romanian folk songs to classical to breakcore. It's really just too hard to pinpoint any specific artists.

FD:What is your favorite frame that you have shot?:

Sarah:I particularly like this photo here. I was working in a model shop at the time, surrounded by dollhouse stuff. It was spilling out into my dreams. I like how it came out. And it was a great night.

FD:What makes a good photo?:

Sarah:When it's REAL! When all the little flaws are still there hiding in the shadows. When a photograph has the humility and courage to expose the facade. The translucent strings of a puppet, the look of daft insecurity in a beautiful girl's eyes, the tiny rip in the backdrop, the zip ties and super glue just creeping from under the mask, the distant piece of garbage on a seemingly flawless alien landscape.

I just had to include the amazing album cover she did for one of John Frusciante's solo albums.

Inspiration: Individually,Tim Walker is my main source of photographic inspiration, predominantly due to his use of visual surrealism and for creating a conceptual niche within the editorial industry. But also Tim Burton for remaining creative, yet original in his dark approaches to art. I am often inspired by numerous genres of music, paintings, books, poems, the art of others, overheard conversations and most of all, my own experiences.

Destination: I would love nothing more than to progress further as a photographer and to also have the opportunity to work with experienced models and stylists in attempt to continue to present my concepts in a way that would hopefully have an effect on those viewing them; I'd love to work for a high magazine too! Most importantly, I just want to continue to share my work with other talented artists and people from around the world, it's a beautiful thing.

Terry Richardson - Influential genius - Megapost

Terry, Terry, Terry... he is without a doubt one of the most influential photographers of his time, and one of the most controversial. His technique is simple, his style is raw, his themes are sex, rock, fun, cheeky and whatnot. He shoots campaigns for Jimmy Choo, Le Silla and Cavalli, covers for some of the biggest magazines in the world and portraits of all the famous faces that matter (almost all). He has made the raw and the "unperfect" acceptable and mainstream. Like his father he is also one of my favorite photographers so I had to pile together some of his most recent work.... enjoy!

Isabell N Wedin -Interview- Fantasy portraits

As you may have realized I am a fan of photographs with a dreamy fantasy atmosphere. I was very lucky to find Isabell, a talented photographer from Sweden. I instantly became a fan of her girly, dreamy, fantasy style.

Education: 2 years at Art school in Sweden ( Kristianstad College of Fine art 2004-2006)and 2 years at Photography school in Sweden (Broby grafiska 2006-2008)

FD:Where have we seen your work?:

Isabell:I just had an exhibition in Istanbul and I am having one right now in Berlin. Since I mostly take portraits I've photographed several musicians and artist. I've just recently started to flirt with fashion and I'm curious of where that's gonna end up.

FD:Why photography and how did you get started?:

Isabell:I guess my passion for photography started in high school. I just

wanted to do art but my parents thought it was better that I took social science. But I discovered that there was a photography class I could take and I was hooked from day one. After high school I followed my own heart and went to art school. But it was first in the year 2006 I started thinking of becoming a professional photographer. Taking portraits came very natural to me, since peoples faces and characters interest me. I love creating images, it's my way of escaping reality and at the same time interacting with the world.

FD:What makes a good photograph?:

Isabell:A good photograph to me is a picture that you wish you could just step right into. It has to make you long, make you loose yourself a little bit. Since I prefer fiction over reality I like dreamy images. One of my favorite photographers is Ryan McGinley. Many of his pictures makes me wish that I was there, taking part instead of just being an observer.

FD:You have a lot of beautiful portraits, what's your approach when working with a model, do you direct a lot or do you just set them free?:

Isabell:I think I direct a lot, I even act out how I want them to move, how their facial expression should be, which I think makes me look quite silly.

FD:What's your favorite frame that you have shot?:

Isabell:At the moment there is one photograph that I like a little bit more then the others. I took it in October and it's a self portrait. I was visiting my parents in the countryside and on one of the mornings the light was magical. I had no model close by so I had to work with myself. I went out into this field and I didn't really have any idea of what I wanted to do. But then suddenly they just showed up, four horses on the other side of the field. We just stood there for a moment and watched each other in complete silence and that's when the camera went of. I like how dream like it turned out, how it seems like I'm longing to be with them. It makes me think of a song about a woman who desperately wishes to run free like the wild horses.

FD:Have you discovered any good photographers recently?:

Isabell:I have discovered so many recently only through facebook. Just by clicking on one photographer that you like you can easily find more by just seeing the photographers that he or she likes. It's a wonderful way of discovering talented photographer all over the world. Just to mention some of them for those who are curious: Ann He, Jessica Silversaga, Nirrimi Hakanson & Karrah Kobus.

FD:What's the plan... the dream?:

Isabell:The dream is to be able, through photography, to travel the world, meet inspiring people, to create images in my personal style and to make a living by doing that.

Steven Duncan-Interview-Fashion photographer

Steven Duncan is a photographer working all over the world for top clients such as VOGUE Italia. He used to work with his ex-wife Laura who had a lot of impact on his fashion work. Now he works with a great stylist, Debra Diament. He used to study in the same school as me, Spéos, which got me interested in knowing more about him and how he's been doing after the education.

FD:You did photography school in Paris. What do you think the benefits are studying photography in the fashion and photography capital?:

Steven:It is amazing for several reasons, Art before commerce, amazing talent to collaborate with, the backdrop of paris, and the level of the talent here is great, everything really.

FD:How did it come about, you shooting for VOGUE Italia?:

Steven:I was having a coffee and I received a phone call, from a consultant representing Vogue Italia offering a job and of course I said yes!

FD:What have you been up to recently, have you been keeping busy?:

Steven:Shooting private projects, being a creative director, constantly working to develop... new looks and amalgamations. and keeping up and developing new relationships.

FD:Do you have a favorite frame that you have shot?:

Steven:I love this shot, and the model is so cool I wish I could have kept in touch with her. ------->

FD:Any advice for those who are taking their first steps towards a career in photography?:

Steven:Yes, Peter Lindbergh and Paolo Roversi both said to me: "never stress, and stay open"

FD:at last... what's the plan?:

Steven:To make great work with great people, in the American and European, Asian markets; have a degree of success that will enable a groovy life with groovy people.

Tim Walker - Giant dolls and melting ice cream

Fantasy fashion photographer Tim Walker is a huge favorite of mine so I must do a post on him every now and then. In this post, model Lindsay Wixson plays almost as big of a part as Tim. She has been a favorite of his for some time and regularly appears in his work.

I want to share with you both his "Like a Doll" series for Vogue Italia, January 2012 and the S/S Mulberry campaign he did with Lindsey and Frida Gustavson.
Tim Walker is a genius when it comes to huge props and few can play with colors with such subtlety but still make an image full of life.

This mixture of brown and colorful pastels... awesome.

All these lines play together so perfectly!

And here is the "Like a Doll" series this talented photographer shot for Vogue Italia...I think it's creepy but really cool.

Easton Schirra-Interview-Beautiful fashion portaits

Easton Schirra is a young and very talented photographer. I think that not enough attention is paid to male portraits in the fashion world and I think Easton is very talented in that field, and in portraits in general. FD:What do you shoot with?:

Easton:Canon 5D Mark II & mainly a 50mm 1.2 L series lens

FD:What motivates you to pick up the camera?:

Easton:Beauty in all forms. My emotions. When I'm alone. Altered reality. Earth elements.

FD:How would you describe your style?:

Easton:My style is forever changing & is always influenced by the subject and my surrounding environment. I tend to love images that make you 'move' with them...when I am shooting I feel as if I am dancing with my subject- it is almost like an out of body experience. So amazing.

FD:I asked him to pick his favorite and tell us the story behind it.

Easton:This image was taken when I was back in Cali for holiday in Dec. These four models are girls that I manage - all are signed by top agencies and are working consistently, which is very exciting for me!! A lot of styling went into this; my girlfriend Nikki Berra, Jessica Quinn & Bethany Struble all worked very hard bringing the wardrobe together and it turned out great. I wanted to showcase the girls in a very beautiful natural environment (on the side of the road in the boonies near our town) with fashion forward clothing. These four girls have very promising careers ahead of them! More images from the shoot will be posted soon- keep an eye out!

FD:What's it like, trying to make a name for yourself in NY?:

Easton:Not easy. It's all about taking risks, and thinking outside the box.

FD:Any advice?:

Easton:You can't be afraid to reach out to people...to make those calls, get the right person on the phone, and get the email address that matters.

FD:What's the plan, the goal?:

Easton:Right now, it's to do what makes me happy, which is photograph and somehow stay afloat in the process...lol. My long term goal is to operate a universal art studio that produces beautiful images, still and moving, brands designer looks, creates campaigns, and is a factory of all things creative. I want to house artists, models, conceptual geniuses, revolutionaries & beautiful human

Erwin Olaf - Amazing emotions

Erwin Olaf is becoming one of my favorite photographers. He is so creative in the studio and his expressions of different emotions always amaze me. So I just wanted to share with you this photo.
