Semester Exams Study Tips

2021-12-13T13:03:00.000-06:00

Photo by Nguyen Dang Hoang Nhu on Unsplash

Written by Abbie Riederer

As you know, semester exams are approaching fast. You may have some mixed emotions about the big tests. You may be fully prepared for them, or maybe you are relying on the last-minute cramming. For fun, I asked various MVL Students what they thought good study habits were. For your convenience, I found out what experts say about these methods.

What an MVL Freshman says: The most effective way I study is by doing flashcards

What experts say about it: Flashcards are a very effective way to study. It is a great approach for self-reflection which deepens memory. This method works great for studying Spanish vocabulary or quick facts about other subjects. It uses active recall and spaced repetition to help you to retain the information. On the downside, flashcards may not be your best bet for studying complex topics. Flashcards could be used as a way to avoid the more important, bigger subjects.

What an MVL Sophomore says: I envision and associate pictures in my head while studying so then it is easier to recall that information on the tests.

What experts say about it: Experts say that picturing your thoughts is very powerful. Students that visualize ideas remember them better than students who do not. You do not need to make up bizarre images, rather make them interact. This actually might be one of the best study tips. Use this method for deeper topics like a historical battle or envisioning the bones of the body. But, if you daydream easily, this might not be the best one for you.

What an MVL Junior says: Find a quiet place to study and repeat the information over and over

What an expert says about it: Repetition is excellent for studying. Rehearsing the information makes it stick in your brain. It also helps to move information from the conscious to the subconscious. To boost your memory, space out your repetition. For example, go over a topic on Monday morning, then another topic Tuesday afternoon. On Tuesday night, go over the information you rehearsed on Monday. This is called spaced repetition. Use it to your benefit.

What an MVL Senior says: relaying information while listening to music. It helps me to attach information to the music

What experts say about it: Experts say that listening to music while studying can be beneficial. During long study sessions (like in preparation for exams) it can help you with your endurance. It can also help you to relieve stress and boost your mood. Boosting your mood can then help with memorization. One of the drawbacks to this technique is that studying with music that contains lyrics can lead to distractions and be less efficient. If you are easily distracted, this method may not be the best for you. But on the other hand, if you are a good multitasker, you might find studying to music very beneficial.

Hopefully, some of these tips helped. I have learned that MVL students do know how to study. You just have to find the best method that suits you. Now, you have a week to study, Don’t just waste away those precious minutes. You only have to grind through two more weeks until the glorious Christmas break. You got it! Remember to do your best and pass those tests!

2021 MVL Volleyball Recap

2021-10-28T13:22:00.001-05:00

Written by Abbie Riederer

The charger varsity volleyball players are wrapping up their 2021 regular season and revving up for their playoff games. They started off the year strong but then hit a rough patch in the middle season resulting in a few consecutive losses. The team persevered through though and was able to have a successful end of the season securing the last couple of wins. Senior captain Kaylee Hunter reflects on how they were able to get through those tough couple of weeks “For me, it was really just trying to bring the team together so we could work towards our goal of making a run in playoffs. Once we were all on the same page, we really worked well together and played really well.” The Chargers finished the regular season with a record of 10-13. During the season, one of the most favorite memories was being one of the only teams to take a set from Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s. Although it has been a fun run, the team has been putting in the work in practice preparing for the upcoming playoff game. The chargers received the 4th seed in the subsection by a mere coin flip decision and were able to grab the home-court advantage. The Chargers host Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial (5th seed) on Thursday, October 28.

Senior Captain Sam Dalueg states how the team has been gearing up for the postseason: “Going into the playoffs we have to have the “ALL IN” mentality. Every game we want to show up and give it our all because we don't know if we'll live to play another day.”

The theme for Thursday's volleyball game will be spirit wear. The Pep band will be playing as well. Come out and support your lady chargers as they take on the knights.

1. Tetris vs 16. The Oregon Trail

The nostalgia of every 2000’s-2010’s kid was strong here as Wii Sports wins by a mile against Kirby 23-4.

5. The Legend Of Zelda vs 12. Sonic the Hedgehog

Two of the closest matchups came in this region. The first of which was this battle between The Legend of Zelda and Sonic the Hedgehog. In the end, Sonic sped ahead by one vote winning 14-13

A video game classic, Pac-Man doubled the score of their competitor, the classic life simulation game, The Sims. Pac-Man wins 18-9.

This was the other match decided by one vote. At the very end, Halo pulled ahead of Rocket League and won by a score of 14 votes to 13.

Two very famous time-wasters duked it out, and we were given the biggest blowout of the entire bracket. Out of 27 votes cast, Minecraft got a whopping 26, defeating Animal Crossing who only got one vote.

The second-most popular Nintendo franchise faced off against EA’s most popular sports franchise, Madden. Pokemon ended up winning this one 18-9.

It’s round 2 for the Superheroes region in the coolest thing ever bracket! Before you vote for your favorite crime-fighters, here is a recap of the first round:

1. Superman vs 16. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

MAJOR UPSET ALERT: The 16-seeded Ninja Turtles beat the Man of Steel in what was never a very close matchup. Will the world’s most fiercest fighting teens move on to the sweet 16? It’s up to you to decide. TMNT wins 12-8.

8. Green Lantern vs 9. Wolverine

It was the Justice League vs the X-Men in this matchup, but ultimately everyone’s favorite Aussie, Hugh Jackman was voted to be cooler. I promise I didn’t just rig it so Hugh Jackman would win. Wolverine moves on 14-6.

5. Captain America vs 12. Mr. Incredible

The first Avenger faced off against Pixar’s favorite hero, Mr. Incredible. In the end, Captain America easily moved on 13 votes to 7.

Things go back to chalk as the Norse god Thor defeats the representative from Wakanda, Black Panther 12-8.

To quote Raj from The Big Bang Theory, “Dude, Aquaman sucks!!” This was proven correct as Spider-Man runs away with this match 16-4.

7. The Flash vs 10. Iron Man

Our fastest hero in the bracket could not catch up to Iron Man in the voting. Iron Man pulled away at the end for a 12-8 win.

2. Batman vs 15. Mighty Mouse

The utter, raspy voice of Batman intimidated Mighty Mouse right away, and just obliterated him in the voting. Batman moves on 17-3.

By Andy Muske

Photo by Pineapple Supply Co. on Unsplash

Welcome to day two of round 2! I hope you’re hungry because it’s time once again for the fast food chains to battle for their coveted status of coolness. Here’s a quick recap of round one:

1. McDonald’s vs 16. Popeye’s

The student’s don’t seem to love that chicken from Popeye’s as much as they are lovin’ the burgers, nuggets, and fries from Mickey D’s. McDonalds wins 15-6.

8. Domino’s vs 9. Pizza Hut

The battle of the pizza wasn’t as close as one might have expected it to be. Domino’s ran away with this one 15-6. Pizza Hut, get a New Ulm location. Get cooler.

5. Chick-Fil-A vs 12. KFC

It just so happened that two chicken chains got matched-up together and the result would make fellow desktop writer Luke Rogotzke proud as Chick-Fil-A wins 16-4 despite being closed on Sundays.

4. Taco Bell vs 13. Arby’s

Another upset was served up by a 13 seed! Arby’s leaves Taco Bell back in the dust 16-5. The meats prevail.

6. Wendy’s vs 11. Sonic

America’s drive-in put up a heck of a fight against Wendy’s, but ultimately the baconators proved to be too strong. Wendy’s moves on 11-10

We had another match decided by one vote, however this one went in favor of the lower seed. Dairy Queen’s fast comfort food was decided to be cooler than Subway’s healthy food 11-10.

7. Burger King vs 10. Chipotle

We love Chipotle...Chipotle is our life… Chipotle wins 15-6.
