Blurry Butterfly

Today’s photo is from Thailand near the bridge over the river Kwai in Kanchanaburi. The wings of the butter fly are really blurry but for some reason I really like the blur.

Butterfly Farm

When I was in Malaysia I visited 2 different butterfly farms which was a sort of zoo for butterflies. It made getting pictures of a butterfly a lot easier. I would recommend visiting either the farm on Penang or in Kuala Lumpur if you like seeing butterflies. I took this picture while in Penang.

Butterflies are not very good at staying still to have their picture taken and I just have a point and click camera but still enjoy some of the pictures that I have got of them.

Land of the Butterfly

The photo theme for this week is Butterflies. I did not know a lot about Taiwan when I decided to go there to get my laptop fixed but discovered a really pretty country. I learned Taiwan is known as the land of the butterfly and I was amazed at how many butterflies there seemed to be everywhere I went. I would love to return to Taiwan and visit the purple butterfly valley at the right time of year when the butterflies are nesting.

Butterflies are not very good at staying still to have their picture taken and I just have a point and click camera but still enjoy some of the pictures that I have taken of them while traveling.

Buckingham Fountain in Chicago

I grew up going to Illinois every other year but did not visit Chicago until I was living in Amsterdam. This is a picture from 2006 when I went to visit Chicago and had a great time there. I think the highlight for me was seeing the Cubs twice.

I made a note that the name of this fountain is Buckingham which seems like a name that would fit better in England rather than in the middle of Chicago but it was still pretty.

This picture is of a fountain in Johor Bahru Malaysia which is just across the bridge from Singapore. I visited this city as part of my year of traveling in Asia. This is the post I did when I was there.

I have picked fountains as my theme for this weeks photos.

Back in 2003 I had just recently bought a new bike so I took a week off work and hopped on my bike and rode a bit around the Netherlands. For bikers none of my rides would amount to anything but it was fun to ride the bicycle around a bit and I think I did ride 100K the last day of my vacation.

One day I visited Apeldoorn and one of the royal palaces in Holland. This one in Apeldoorn is called Het Loo. I found the gardens and the fountains more impressive than the palace itself.

Gone but not forgotten

Well the ice is now gone but I really enjoyed seeing the city as a frozen wonderland.

Today’s picture is of the Amstel River. There were people ice skating on the edges of the river but it still looked like the center was not completely solid. I have never thought about seagulls as winter birds but they were all over the ice.

Amsterdam Winter what a drag

Amsterdam does not get a lot of snow but I was really surprised to see all the sleds in the city. Even if Amsterdam had lot of snow there are no hills to use them on.

All the children in the city seemed to be out enjoying the snow as soon as there was enough to make a snowball. This child was up for a drag around town.

I have been posting pictures from the past but for this week I am going with the theme Amsterdam Winter and these will be from the last week.

I have been living in Amsterdam for about 12 years and this is the first time it has been cold enough for the main canals of the city to freeze solid enough for people to skate on them.

Horny Monks

I have posted horny animals in the this week’s themed pictures but I thought I would change it to a different type of horn for the last photo of the week. This is from a Buddhist temple in Ganzi, China. This town is in the province of Sichuan on the what is known as the Tibetan highway. I am not sure I would call parts of it a road and certainly not a highway.

Horny Photo Week

I have picked horns for this week’s photo theme. I have been to Rocky Mountain National park a lot of times being originally from Denver. I am still always thrilled to return and honestly I appreciate the beauty of the Rockies more now than when I lived so close.

When I was thinking about the pictures to post with the horn theme this is the picture that popped in my mind but there are no horns there so am posting 2 photos today. This is an Elk without horns in Rocky Mountain National Park and the second are of Big Horn Sheep with horns just at the entrance of the park.

Elephant Falls

The photo to finish off this week of waterfall photos is from Elephant Falls in Vietnam near to the city of Dalat. I took a couple of photos from the top of this falls and then walked down to the base. I did not take any pictures from the base because of the spay from the falls got me soaking wet and did not want to get my camera as wet as I was.

This picture was taken at Kuang Si Waterfall near Luang Prabang in Laos. It is a series of waterfalls and I only walked to the top of the nearest one.

Week of waterfall Photos

I have picked waterfalls as my theme for pictures this week. I was lucky to have the chance to travel with my parents to Norway in 2003. I recall there being these huge waterfalls in every fjord that the ship we were on entered. Most of the waterfall we saw were narrow but the height of the small steams of water was what most impressed me.

This is a picture of Kjosfossen waterfall that we saw when we were traveling from Oslo to Bergen.

You can not go inside most of the mosques in Morocco unless you are Muslim. This Mosque in Casablanca is one of the few that does accept visitors.

Not the stereotype

I talked about how Mosques were new to me before Istanbul but I formed a stereotype of what I thought a mosque should look like from that experience. My stereotype of Mosques did not really fit with the Mosque I visited in Xian China. It looks a lot more like the Buddhist or Taoist temples than what I expected from a mosque.

Istanbul was all new to me

I have picked Mosques for the theme for pictures this week. I grew up going to churches and have visited tons of churches throughout Europe but my first experience with Mosques was when I went to Istanbul in 2004.

I stayed close to the Blue Mosque and was awakened each morning with the call to prayer. I was really surprised at the interiors to the different mosques that I visited, they just seemed to be huge to me. I think the huge feeling came from the fact that there are no seats so they are just large open spaces. Even with all the people trying to sell me carpets all the time I really loved Istanbul and all the new experiences.

This is a view from the Topkapi Palace and you can see a number of Mosque in the distance.

Sure I’m Santa Claus

I ran into these 2 boys when I was walking around the Intramuros fort in Manila, Philippines. They thought I was Santa so I said OK. I tried later to tell them no I am not Santa but it never seemed to make a difference. They got bored with me after about 30 minutes but I thought for a while they were going to follow me everywhere I went.
