Augmented reality is all around us and it’s been helping Hollywood storytellers tell their adventures for a very long time and will probably continue to do so in the future.

Here's augmented reality Hollywood style:-

-Iron Man and Iron Man 2

This has got to be one of the most advanced cases of AR in a Heads Up Display. Iron Man’s suit is so kitted out with AR goodies that it gives stacks of real time information so that Tony Stark can do what he does best.

Iron Man and Iron Man 2 are great examples of how AR could work for soldiers whereby just using a mainframe computer they are fed with live data to the soldiers in the bettle field.

ome of these technologies are already being used by certain countries for wars.Companies like iRobot are already making small battle robots that will create a mesh network on the battlefield while computer systems do the rest feeding soldiers information on everything from distance to targets to whether or not the troops coming over the hill are enemies or targets.

-They Live

A drifter discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth. That’s basically the premise of They Live, and if you haven't seen it, download it from the web now.The idea of putting on a pair of glasses and seeing something that others cannot is what all the "Hoo-haa" of AR is all about.

-Minority Report

Rather than tell you which bits aren’t using AR it’s probably easier to tell you which bits are. Tom Cruise embraces Augmented Reality with aplomb in this sci-fi in 2054. There’s the whole computerised sequence at the beginning where he uses his hands to find information in 3D computerised space and then there's all that AR down at the shops when the adverts start telling him what’s on offer that he'd like. For all you know, the AR elements of the movie are likely to be happening a lot quicker than 2054.Also, it is a general perception that the part with the mid-air computer interface as one of the best examples of AR, strictly speaking, not really. It looks amazing but it may as well be happening on a screen. Still a breath-taking vision of the future though.

Arguably, the big blue person that Jake Sully jumps into is one big augmented reality device that allows you to experience a whole host of senses but even if you don't count that, there's plenty of other examples in what is one of the most visually stunning sci-fi films out there.

So, rather than suggesting that we're taking things a little too far, there are still lots of scenes in the film that feature AR. Like the big map in the HQ that shows the Na’vi’s tree, the stacks of spaceships that use HUD screens to navigate or the plenty of toys in the researchers lab. Take you pick.

Robocop

What do you think that big helmet is on Murphy’s head is after he becomes Robocop? That’s AR working at its best giving the user, in this case a police officer, a stream of data and information to enhance their vision and understanding of what’s around them – ie crooks and thieves.

While Tony Stark in Iron Man used his head-mounted display to make a phone call, Murphy uses his to see things like his mission objectives, sometimes to his peril, as well as pre-aim any number of targets before blasting them to smithereens with over the shoulder trick shots.

Wall-e

Augmented reality doesn’t have to be about heads-up displays in soldiers all the time, it can be used for good as well.

Take the cleaning robots who use a scanner to analyse the amount of dirt on Wall-e before chasing after him. Or the Buy ‘n’ Large displays of the people on the cruise spaceship that lets them see a very different world to the one they should see. Finally, there's also the moment when Eve discovers the seedling on Earth and we see her little AR display of information to the fact.

Top Gun

There's a good reason that there's augmented reality in Top Gun and that's because it's the technology that actually exists in fighter jets. The HUDs fitted in the cockpits of the F-14s as flown my Maverick and co. are the original reason why these things are called heads-up displays. The idea is that the pilots can keep their heads up and on the action rather than down and lots in their instruments.

This is probably the best example of AR out there. It's clear, simple with just the right amount of information not to distract from what's going on and there's even the bleeping sounds as well which let the pilot know whether they've got a lock on or someone has got a lock on them - another example of AR in itself, only this time through audio. The craziest part of all? This stuff existed in good working order in 1986 before the phrase augmented reality even existed.

Total Recall

We've had a big old debate at Pocket-lint HQ as to whether this example of AR in Total Recall is actually AR at all. No one is questioning that it's a superb idea and a really interesting vision of the future of security checks but is there actually and real life component to what you see or is it entirely virtual? The actual part is clear and there is a definite overlay of information as the real people walk past but if what's on the screen is all computer-generated, does it really count?

We'll leave you to make your minds up about that one but, either way, we're willing to bet that there's some undeniable examples of AR at least once in this 90s classic.

Predator and Predator 2

The Predator’s helmet lets him see heat signals from Dutch (Arnie again) and his fellow soldiers in the jungle, as well as talking to his guns to allow him to see where to lock on. Like with Total Recall, one could have a debate about whether the infra red scans are VR or AR and that all depends on the heat signature being the real element but being able to see the sound waves of the soldiers' voices as well as hearing the actual sound is definitely an example of augmented reality.

At the most basic level, you could even site the laser siting on the big guy's shoulder canon as an example of AR as well.

Terminator, Terminator 2, Terminator 3

Probably one of the finest examples in the movies of what AR could do given to a full automated robot or Terminator in this case.

In all three movies (most notably Terminator 2 at the start) Arnie uses his built in computing power to measure up people for their clothes as well as later on in the film assess whether the police force that he had just unleashed hell on where still all alive.

Bonus: Fight Club

While there isn’t any augmented reality in Fight Club for the characters to see, AR is used to illustrate Ed Norton’s character (The Narrator) and his love affair with the Ikea catalogue.

As he walks around his apartment, prices, labels and other details are flashed up on the screen for all to see giving us, the audience, a augment perception of what is on show.

Augmented Reality is taking many tourist and thrusting them back in time to experience the sights of the ancient world. Just by using a camera and a video screen Augmented reality combines live and digital images in real time. With this, it can give many people the sense that artificial objects are appearing in the physical world.in some countries such as in germany, china, france,Switzerland the images of the past landmarks are reconstructed and being displayed overlapping with the current appearance giving tourists the sense of travelling back in time. We know that augmented reality is used in a variety of applications, mainly is on entertainment, but some have started to focus on to provide helpful information to answer questions for example, where can i find a restaurant?.Historically accurate depictions of the past for tourists falls in between the two. Besides, it makes people wonder that if augmented reality is trying to get a ‘sweet spot’ in the world Many historic places across the world such as, in Beijing the ‘Garden of Perfect Brightness’ was lost during the war. The garden was constructed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and was destroyed in 1860 during the second opium war. Without high resolution photography, China’s current citizens had to rely on paintings and sketches to see how the beautiful gardens once appeared. A team at the Beijing Institute of Technology created a virtual reconstruction of the gardens and a coin operated viewing platform for tourists to use to see it. They are even working on a sleeker looking model to replace the current one.

Have you tried the Ray-Ban Virtual Mirror? You can download a 3D technology at the Ray-Ban site. Then connect your web cam and next choose a Ray-Ban Sunglass which you like. See how you look in the Virtual Mirror??

It’s an application that could help to spread the Ray-Ban brand online. But for sure it’s an appropriate tool that makes consumer engagement and advocacy among peers. It will even drive store traffic and retail sales.

Consumers will fit a few models in front of the virtual mirror. But when they have the model that makes them look like a “fashionista”, they will not be able to click “your buy it now” button because it’s not there.

The 3D technology that Ray-Bay uses here is provided by French company FittingBox. These 3D technologies bring me immediately in the “mash-up” mode. See the demo in SlideShare below.

Ever heard of such invention of mankind fellow readers??

An idea behind the latest project from DARPA, the Pentagon’s blue sky science and technology division estimating ariving and presenting itself to the reality within 3 to 5 years.

Oh come on! Do not even try to convince me you will not be surprised. Imagin you are a soldier on a battling field with these contact lens on, you can see the enemy's radar even before they are spotted right before your very eyes!!

The contact lens will be portraying a first person shooter view-like view.

Potential uses include virtual displays for pilots, videogame projections and telescopic vision for soldiers. A working prototype of a lens-embedded antenna that draws power for the device from radio frequencies has also been created. The next steps are to build a version that can display several pixels — and then to test it on a person.

If a person wants to visualize a new sofa will look like in the living room you with this new augmented reality project the person can just use a marker, place on the floor and point your webcam. Andre Fogaca who works in marketing for a construction company called Rossi. This company which is based in Brazil liked the idea of using augmented reality to help customers visualize the product but the problem is that the latest city skyscraper development. An A4 size marker viewed through an iphone clearly was not going to be enough to help potential buyers to see what the Fibrasa Connection development that will look like before it is built so that they have created the world's largest augmented reality marker, laid it out where the tower will be located and hire a helicopter that is equipped with a notebook and camera to fly over the site. With this project the result is a life sized tower and a place in the Guiness Book Of Records for the worlds largest augmented reality project.

The Next Generation Satellite Finder

This is the next generation satellite finder. You can see all the satellites lined up, on the live video screen by pointing your iPhone anywhere towards the sky. At a glance, you’ll see the satellite’s location and if any trees or buildings are blocking the line of sight. In this way, you will know where to place your dish best. Doing a site survey and setting up a dish is going to be a snap with this app. This is a truly applicable augmented reality app for the professional.

The app uses the GPS, accelerometer, and the compass of the new iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. By moving the phone left and right and up and down, the satellite arc will follow the live video on the display. But, the compass has a bit of a lag, so when doing quick sideways movements the satellite arc is trying to catch up and then settles to the correct position.

Nintendo Wii- Augmented Reality?

A question was brought up about the Nintendo's Wii whether if it is one of the augmented reality gadget. After several session of analysis plus research, i decided to share it with all of you.

If you haven’t heard aboutJohnny Lee you should really just look him up on youTube. His latest experiment he shows us perspective based 3d interaction, all for the price of a Wiimote and a pair of safety goggles. His other experiments include a multi-touch screen using nothing more then a Wiimote and some infrared lights on a pen, normally costing well over thousands of dollars. But for now, here is Virtual Reality the Wii-way.

And the answer is yes. Any game control of same sort is considered an Augmented Reality.

Another example is as below:

sensor , injected sport shoes along with displays on the heads-up of the augmented reality- the visor. Play with your friends around the world, using smart phone technologies. Anywhere and anytime!

This 3D Augmented Reality Wind Visualiser 1.1 it provides two flat view compass and an augmented reality 3D view showing the local wind and weather conditions with animated wind vectors. It is ideal for aviators, sailors, surfers etc and the compass accuracy will depend on the magnetic field around the device. However if a user use it to close to a metallic object or even a electrical appliances the directional accuracy will be disturbed. The main features are 3D augmented reality view with animated wind vectors, map viewing of all local stations with weather arrows showing direction, speed and temperature and uses official bureau of meteorology data within Australia and NOAA metar data (from airports) for rest of the world. However, the feature device dependencies are:

 iPhone-the interface only runs in portrait mode and it also has a 3D view that is shown as an overlay on the camers view.

Malaysia Airlines develops augmented reality app to offer deals

Malaysia Airlines has created an "augmented reality" app to promote its special offers. It’s one of the first airlines to apply the relatively new technology.

This app is available for iPhone users. It highlights the carrier’s trades which are accessible from airports surrounding the user. Like the other mobile AR apps, it uses the built-in camera, GPS and compass in iPhone so that to recognize an object or a place which a user is pointing to by covering the screen’s image to location data.

By holding the iPhone in front of you, you can view the surrounding airports and select one to see flight offers. "It's a fun and interactive way to choose your destination, book a ticket and then fly," says Jim Peters of SITA, an aviation technology firm that worked on the app.

The travel industry has been slowly implementing the technology to give people a feel for vacation sites and more information with the point of a smart phone. Cities, guidebooks, tour companies and ski resorts that have created their own particular channel in an augmented reality browser can upload tourist-friendly information about restaurants, sights and shops.

For instance, when the browser identifies that the phone is pointed to a street block, it will tag points of interest using small icons. Users can touch on the icon to get more information, ranging from address and phone number to historical background or Wikipedia description. Overall, this app will assist us not to panic to look for the flight offers at the airport.

Augmented Reality in the medical field

Nowdays, technology in the medical field is advanced and it is really interesting by using augmented reality. Students that are in the medical field now can use augmented reality to help them such as to practice surgery especially in a controlled environment. Medical conditions can be explained to patient by using visualization aid. Augmented reality can help reduce the risk of an operation by giving the surgeon better sensory perception. This type of technology also can be combined with X-rays and MRI systems to help the surgeon bring all together into a single view for the surgeon.

Neurosurgery is major when it comes to surgical applications of augmented reality. The ability to image the brain in 3D on top of the actual patient’s anatomy is powerful for the surgeon. Although the brain is fixed compared to other parts of the body, it still can be achieved by using this technology it also will give the surgeon the exact coordinates. It is still a worry during surgery the tissue will have some movement. This also could affect the positioning for the augmented reality to do work.

Greetings readers.

Ever seen such an interesting ,captivating and interactivebillboard that reacts to you?
This was what Forever 21 did to their billboard in Times Square,New York. The augmented Reality in here are capable of interacting with people, taking pictures with the audience,and simply pick anyone to put in her hat or simply just toss them away.

According to source:

Forever 21 wanted to make a very memorable impression on the viewer by having this giant model take pictures of the crowd, and then have it develop into a realtime picture. She can also pick people from the crowd, put them under her hat, put them in her purse, or she might just flick them away. I have a video after the jump.

You will notice all the tourists around this billboard taking pictures with their cell phone cameras. I am assuming that this the idea. After all, you can see in this video here that Times Square is flooded with video screens, billboards, and other assorted neon. That Forever 21 billboard/video screen sure stands out. I must admit that I never heard of Forever 21 now, but that billboard has certainly made a good impression.

That leaves the score of advertisers: one, and consumer, stunned.

One point for the advertisers.HURRAH.

Many augmented reality projects rely on specific or customized hardware, and the mechanisms that correlate data added by technology with the real world are often technically complex. One of the downside of augmented reality is the expensive costs of hardware. Besides, augmented reality projects can also be expensive to buy the hardware’s and also in maintaining the development of the augmented reality projects. The augmented reality projects today focus on the individual users and may not lend themselves to team activities or group learning. In addition, the projects that are develop can raise questions about their pedagogic value. Educational institutions must announce to educators to be careful that activities have educational merit and do not let students be taken with the technology alone.

The Third Week Analysis of Our Blog Poll Question

We are truly appraised by the visitors who visited and voted on our blog. After three weeks of analysis, the poll results show that 29% of the visitors voted “Awesome yo”. Besides, we recognized that more than one fifth of visitors are interested in Augmented Reality. On the other hand, the amount of votes that is 23% goes for both “Informative” and “So so” which means some visitors consider that our posts are informative to them while some think that it’s just for general knowledge. Lastly, we were glad to see only a small amount which is one out of twenty visitors feels that our blog is boring. Overall, according to the statistics, we convinced that our blog gives the visitors a fruitful information about the Augmented Reality and we will keep updating our blog with ultimate knowledge for our valued visitors.

Now that we has posted some examples of Augmented Reality, I believe you guys more or less have a slight idea about what is this Augmented Reality now. Ergo, I shall put forward these histories of the invention of this Augmented Reality so young generation like us be aware of how and when the process took place and also, the hardships these people went through to achieve we have got today.

1936-
Konrad Zuse invents the first digital computer known as the Z1 (computer).
Z1 is the first ever Programmable Binary Computer which signified the first entry form of augmented reality.

“I remember mentioning to friends back in 1938 that the world chess champion would be beaten by a computer in 50 years time. Today we know computers are not far from this goal.” - Konrad Zuse, in the 1980s
1948:
Norbert Wiener creates the science of cybernetics: transmitting messages between man and machine.

1962:
Morton Heilig, a cinematographer, creates a motorcycle simulator called Sensorama with visuals, sound, vibration, and smell.

1966:
Ivan Sutherland invents the head-mounted display suggesting it was a window into a virtual world.Introducing it at 1966, it was the first ever device which allows user to see virtually from lenses.

1976:
Myron Krueger creates Videoplace that allows users to interact with virtual objects for the first time.

1982:
The first laptop, the Grid Compass 1100 is released, which was also the first computer to use a clamshell design. The Grid Compass 1100 had an Intel 8086 CPU, 350 Kbytes of memory and a display with a resolution of 320x240 pixels, which was extremely powerful for that time and justified the enormous costs of 10,000 USD. However, its weight of 5kg made it hardly portable, but it made the possibilities of computer being portable possible.

Now, now, the wonders of evolution from a merely device to aid people in calculating into now a portable compact laptop. As have been told Augmented Reality is taking over a bigger and bigger place than it had been. Ever wonder life without computers? Oh trust me you will miss it.I know because i was in NS without entertainment of electronic devices for 3 months :3
Now people we should always seek improvement and always be updated of things happening.We are the IT students. Being updated is our duty :)

Augmented reality games show potential

Many video game developers worked hard to get players into a beautiful constructed reality therefore, a new wave of titles is leveraging augmented reality technology to set games in the most immersive environment yet that is the one around us.

Augmented reality involves the layering of digital objects over a camera view of the world and to allow users to interact with the environment that are in virtual items. In addition, for two decades the technology has been around and had only been taken off in the last year because of the iphone 3gs and android smart phones that has cameras, GPS, compasses and powerful processors that are necessary for augmented reality. Game developers have been working to apply augmented reality into games to let users have a level of interaction in the real world.

Such gaming systems like the Playstation, DSi, Nintendo comes equipped with a camera equipped platform. With augmented reality users can have a virtual window into another world rather than set looking at a screen that is fixed in front of them.

Get the idea how augmented reality in games can be entertaining….
