Helping Kids Stay Active Indoors

To protect families from the recent spike in COVID-19 cases across the country, many school districts are heading back to online learning, sports activities are being canceled, and recreation facilities are setting restrictions. While it may be the right move to keep the community-at-large safe, these restrictions limit physical activity and make children restless when cooped up indoors. But there is a simple way to mitigate this problem – exercise.

Youth sports and learning experts at Skyhawks Sports Academy and STEM Sports®recommend turning exercise into a fun activity to capture children’s interest and keep their bodies moving. One example is Playing Card Fitness, a fun activity that includes simple exercises that is enjoyable for the whole family and can be played indoors in any size room.

Skyhawks and STEM Sports® Playing Card Fitness: How to Play

Do not underestimate how fun and challenging a workout can be using a deck of cards. Playing Card Fitness is a great cardio-based, full-body routine that only requires a deck of cards and a few square feet of open space. To play, each participant picks a card, and depending on the suit and value on the card, everyone completes the exercise. Every suit represents a different exercise and the value on the card represents the rep count. Simple right? Now, let’s understand which suit means what exercise and how to assign values.

Numbers 2 - 9 = values (i.e. reps)
Face card = 11 reps
Ace = 12 reps
Hearts = pushups
Diamonds = jumping jacks
Clubs = sit-ups
Spades = squats

For example, if a participant picks a card that is 10 of hearts, all participants need to do 10 pushups. To make it a good workout session, have each participant pick one card each and complete the round, and then go for three rounds.

Bonus – Teach Children the Concepts of STEM

Along with the physical benefits of Playing Card Fitness, this activity can also be the catalyst to introduce STEM concepts to children. This activity is a perfect opportunity to introduce the concepts of heart rate, calorie burn, and calorie intake to older children. It is also a great way to keep children and families in the habit of taking time each day to keep their bodies healthy physically and mentally. But the concept of darkness versus light represents so much more than just the battle between good and evil—it is complacency versus activism, bravery versus cowardice, individuality versus conformity and any number of other ideas that are profoundly relevant in our society today.
“Extraordinary can often seem rather ordinary,” continues Whitaker. “And Meg Murry’s voyage shows us how we ultimately can come to a place where that lightness can overcome the darkness, allowing us to bring the best parts of ourselves to the world.”

The relationship dynamic can be even trickier when your daughter is in those tween-age years. What can be even more difficult is when some people dismiss certain behaviors as “typical tween girl behavior” when those behaviors can be symptoms of something more serious. Research suggests that girls are more likely than boys to report having mostly inattentive Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms. Since inattentive symptoms can be less noticeable than hyperactive and impulsive symptoms, it is important that moms know what to look for.

I’m proud to be joining forces with Shire, CHADD and Holly Robinson Peete to announce the launch of keep momming, a new public service initiative geared towards the moms of tween girls to raise awareness of ADHD.

The Momentum Ultra-Lights are so small and compact that the instant they are in your ear, you immediately forget that they are even in there. The fit snug into your ear canal, easily filtering out any background noise.

Final thoughts

When ace and friends was approached by X-1, I'd be lying if I didn't disclose that I gave and eye roll and thought, “yeah, okay, another earbud claiming to not slide out at the first sign of sweat”.

Admittedly, it took several weeks of runs to finally jostle the Momentum Ultra-Light out of my ear and it was few second quick fix to put them immediately back in and remain there for the rest of my workout. These earbuds are by far the most comfortable pair I've owned and have now become my all-time favorite.

The sound is phenomenal and they function perfectly, even after a sweaty workout. Although they are a bit more expensive than your average headphones, the reward is certainly worth the investment.

I love all thing technology. Anything that makes my life simpler and easier, I'm all for it! Recently, I've been reading about a variety of smart home stuff and it's really sparked my interest. I like the idea of controlling my TV, radio and more directly from my smart phone and computer. Now I have the ability to control my thermostat in the same way.

With the introduction of smart thermostats, more specifically, the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat, controlling my home thermostat from anywhere with a few click from my smartphone.

Compatibility

If you are interested in investing in one of these thermostats, you must first determine whether or not your household wiring and system is compatible. Honeywell simplifies your decision process by providing a step by step series of questions to help you determine whether or not your current system will be compatible with the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat.

Installing Your New Thermostat

Once you determine your system is compatible, installation (via my hubby) was quite quick and simple. The directions to install the system were straightforward and if you discover a roadblock along the way, the installation video below was extremely helpful.

Once installation was complete, I immediately set up the weekly temperature schedule.

Wi-Fi Online Access

To easily access control via Wi-Fi, you must first create an account at My Total Connect Comfort which will allow access from my smart phone app. Apps are available for iPhone, iPod, iPad and Android devices.

The Honeywell Total Connect Comfort app is super user-friendly. I can easily adjust the household temperature with my phone. In addition to adjusting the indoor temp, the app allows you to:

View and change the schedule (for thermostats that support this feature)
Utilize the Demo Mode before purchasing a thermostat
View and change heating and cooling system settings
View and set the indoor temperature
View and change system fan (for thermostats that support this feature)
View and change humidifier and dehumidifier settings (for thermostats that support this feature)
View 5-Day weather forecast
View outdoor temperature and humidity (when used with an outdoor sensor)
Access multiple smart thermostats
Access multiple locations if more than one system is registered
View thermostat alerts such as high or low temperature
Automatically upgrade to new features once they become available

To conclude, this is a fantastic thermostat. Although this product is not perfect, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, I would give it a very solid 5. While it maybe somewhat pricey, it is absolutely the best value currently on the market for smart thermostats and we are completely happy with all of it's functionality.

Swiss Colony treats are just as tasty as it was when I was a child. There is just something that reminds me of my childhood, the smell, the flavor.... brings me back. Julie started to get up at four in the morning to blend and prepare these smoothies, and then before she knew it word spread and people were calling her for juice. For me to successfully try and complete a three day cleanse, there were some criteria that had to met before I could begin. First, it had be easy. I don’t have the time, nor the energy to shop at various stores trying to locate some obscure ingredients. Keeping it simple is my theory. Second, if I’m drinking these juices for multiple days, it had to taste delicious (or at most, good) for me to stick it out. Finally, it was important to me that the I could clearly understand the ingredients that were actually in each drink. I didn’t want to invest my time in consuming drinks with a bunch of random *stuff* in it, that would defeat my purpose. My main goal was to flush out the *toxins* and give my body the jumpstart that it so desperately needed.

I wasn’t actually familiar with many juice cleanses, so when I came across Jus by Julie and investigated their products, I had a feeling that this program could work for me. When i visiting their website, what caught my eye was that their juices were made FRESH DAILY. Jus by Julie only uses pure and raw ingredients to rid the body of impurities through specially formulated drinks. The Jus by Julie website offered a lot of valuable and useful information that convinced me that this was the cleanse for me to try out.

Because I was unfamiliar with juice cleansing, the nice folks at Jus by Julie selected a variety of flavors for me to try during my 3-Day Juice Cleanse. This cleanse includes six drinks to be consumed over a three day period. It was great to see that once the juices arrived, the ingredients in each drink was clearly labeled, recognizable and items that were very familiar to me. Spinach, Kale, Bananas, Lemons, Pineapple.

I received my order promptly the following day of my order placement. It came in a nice big insulated tote bag.

After receiving my juices, I immediately began the following day. It is suggested that you begin the cleanse within three days of receiving your order. To start the day, I began with Morning Glory... with romaine, celery, spinach, apple, kale, banana and strawberry as ingredients... my thoughts... it's not going to be bad at all... I'm not going to lie, this particular juice was a hold the nose, drink as fast as you can through a straw beverage. At the very moment of finishing this juice, I was not looking forward to the next drink, let alone the next three days of this cleanse.

To my delightful surprise to rest of the juices throughout the day were not only delicious, but a fantastic surprise. Each juice following the first was not only flavorful, but filling as well. My absolute favorites were the Island Coconut, Chia Berry, Not So Chunky and Sweet Spin! I will definitely be ordering these in the future for just my every day weeks!

What I really liked about Jus by Julie were the option of flavors throughout the days as well as the ability to swap one flavor for drink labeled number (2) on day one versus drink day two.

Because I am so used to eating solid food every day, I found myself craving anything that crunched. Jus by Julie recommends that you eat as little as possible when cleansing for the best results, but if you need something, you can much on raw veggies or you were also allowed egg white, which is what I gladly included. By day two, I actually felt pretty good as well as energized and continued my regular workout schedule.

So what were the overall pros and cons of the 3-day Jus by Julie Juice Cleanse? First, let me begin with the cons: {1} Morning Glory flavor was not good {2} Some of the juices were clearly thinner than others, allowing to drink much faster and not seem as full and satisfied and {3} I missed *crunching* on physical food.

Now for the pros: {1} Drinks are clearly labeled and it’s easy to identify which juice was to be consumed {2} ALL other juice flavors that I tried were delicious and I really enjoyed each of them. {3} made from pure and raw ingredients DAILY {4} ONLY 3-days.

I completed the cleanse successfully over the weekend and I could certainly tell a difference. Was I craving actual solid food, of course, but healthy non-processed or pre-packaged food.

I am thrilled to say that I finished the 3-day cleanse. My body was happy too. It was the exact jumpstart that was needed to get back on track to healthier eating.
