Cagayan de Oro City, City of Golden Friendship

Cagayan de Oro City is a first class city and the center of commerce in northern Mindanao and is the capital city in the province of Misamis Oriental. Tourism is much marketed by various travel entity in the city that offers travel guide and accommodation. The city is bordered by the provinces of Bukidnon on its south, Lanao del Norte on its west, Tagoloan on the east and Macajalar Bay on its north.

BRIEF HISTORY

Around 377 AD which is known as the Neolithic Period, Himologan settlement were built eight kilometers away from the current core of the city. The settlement were own by the natives who offer tributes to the Sultan of Maguindanao, Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat.

The declaration of the city to be the capital town in the province of Misamis Oriental were initiated by the Spanish Governor General Carlos Maria de la Torre on February 1872 and was provided with the name Cagayan de Misamis and acquired its autonomy from Spain on January 10, 1899 which was instigated by the Late Emilio Aguinaldo.

Upon the occurrence of the Philippine-American War, the city were absorbed the Americans on March 31, 1900 that triggered the battle of the town opposing American regime headed by General Nicolas Capistrano on April 7, 1900 accompanied with the fighters of the Filipino resistance. But unfortunately, the battle which named as the Battle of the Cagayan de Misamis was favorable on the Americans. But after 40 years under the American government, the city was awarded by its sovereignty in July 4, 1946.

The municipality of Cagayan de Misamis were declared as charter city last June 15, 1950 under RA 521 which was signed by the former leader of the Philippines, President Elpidio Quirino with the efforts and exertions of its congressman at the time, Emmanuel Pelaez. And later on November 22, 1983, the city was proclaimed as the highly urbanized municipality by the Ministry of Local Government.

Davao City is an extensive metropolis of over a 1,363,337 citizens situated in the Southeastern portion of Mindanao. It is one of the largest cities in the world with a land area of 2,443.61 square kilometers. It is a place consecrated with natural advantages. The soil is very productive and rich in minerals. The city has plentiful supply of potable water. Located in a typhoon-free zone, its tropical weather is characterized by even distribution of climatic elements all year round. Davao City History

Regional historians claimed that the word davao originated from the phonetic combination of the word of three Bagobo subgroups when referring to Davao River, a significant watercourse which drains itself into Davao Gulf near the city. The indigenous Obos who dwells in the hinterlands of the region called the river, Davoh; the Clatta or Guiangans called it Duhwow, or Davau, and the Tagabawa Bagobos, Dabu. To the Obos, the word davoh also means a place "beyond the high grounds", alluding to the community situated at the doorway of Davao River which were surrounded by high rolling hills. When asked where they were going, the usual reply is davoh, while pointing towards the direction of the town. Duhwow also refers to a trading village where they switch their forest merchandise in exchange for salt and other commodities.

Spanish authority was scarcely experienced in the Davao until 1848, when a mission directed by Don Jose Uyanguren came to build a Christian colony in the region of mangrove swamps that is now Bolton Riverside. Davao was then ruled by a Muslim chieftain, Datu Bago, who held his settlement at the banks of Davao River (once called Tagloc River by the Bagobos). After Uyanguren defeated Datu Bago, he renamed the region Nueva Guipúzcoa, in honor of his home in Spain, and became its first governor. Uyanguren's attempts to expand the area, however, did not prosper.

A few years following the American forces landed in 1900, private farm possession grew and transportation and communication facilities were enhanced, thus paving the way for the region's economic development.

A Japanese capitalist named Kichisaburo Ohta was given authority to develop enormous land which he converted into abacá and coconut plantations. The first wave of Japanese plantation workers came onto its shores in 1903, creating a Little Japan. They had their own school, newspapers, an embassy, and even a Shinto Shrine. On the whole, they established wide abaca plantations around the shores of Davao Gulf and developed large-scale commercial interests such as copra, timber, fishing and import-export trading. Filipinos learned the techniques of enhanced cultivation from the Japanese so that ultimately, agriculture became the living of the province's economic prosperity.

Davao was officially inaugurated as a chartered city on March 1, 1937 by President Manuel L. Quezon. Thirty years later, Davao was subdivided into three self-governing provinces, namely Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. Over the years, Davao has turn an ethnic melting pot as it continues to pull out migrants from all over the country, lured by the possibilities of striking it rich in the country's third largest city.

On December 8, 1941 Japanese planes bombed the city. Japanese occupation started in 1942. In 1945, American and the Philippine Commonwealth forces released Davao City from Japanese forces.

Apolinario Mabini Shrine

The Mabini Shrine is situated in Barrio Talaga around 7 kilometers away from the town proper of Tanauan. Or, from the STAR highway take the Sambat, Tanauan exit, and move towards the Talisay - Tagaytay route. The Mabini shrine is about 5 minutes drive from the toll plaza.

It is a memorial to the nationalism of Philippine hero Aploinario Mabini, popular as the Sublime Paralytic whose ethical convictions and political principles enlightened the hearts of every Filipino who hunts for national personality. It houses the memorabilia of the late revolutionary hero who was the Brains of the Katipunan, a Filipino movement opposing Spain governance in the year 1896.

Taal Heritage

Taal Church

Its surface is flamboyant which consists of a single mass of stone shaped into rich complex models. The church, however, is a fusion of styles with arched openings, alternating segmental canopies and arches of assymmetric shapes.

Gerthel Beach

Among the best beaches of the region situated in the municipal of Lobo. The beach is a widen white sand roughly a stretch of 1 kilometer. Gradually inclining ocean floor around two hundred meters before the drop off.

Matabungkay Beach

The package of having a beautiful sunset, white beach, and the provincial atmosphere made Matabungkay a drive-away beach destination for tourists. The area has little to offer other than swimming and watching the sunset but good enough for an inexpensive trip. Unlike other beaches, Matabungkay offers reasonable options for low-budget vacationers. Families who are unable to afford costly restaurants bring their barbeque sets and cook their food the way they want at the beach or at their rented open cottages. Others spend their day barbecuing on the shaded raft floating several meters off the shore. These floating sheds are rented out by villagers which they remark a purely Matabungkay way of picnicking. For upscale tourists, they can choose from luxurious resorts located along the right strip of the beach.

Taal Lake & Volcano

Taal Lake and Volcano is the Southern Luzon’s major tourist attraction. It is the portal for most visitors is through Tagaytay City, from the ridge where a panoramic view of Volcano Island can be seen. The volcano is known to be the smallest in the world. Surrounded by a lake, it is situated on an 8.8-kilometer islet, lapped by the 27-kilometer-long lake. Both the lake and the volcano are situated on the crater of an extinct volcano. Volcano Island is also ideal for trekking.

Mt. Maculot

Among the most admired mountaineering destinations south of Manila. It is preferred due to its well-established trail, wide campgrounds, fine views atop and enough scale of complexity. Its major tourist appeal is the Rockies, a rocky outcropping overlooking Taal lake and its popular little volcano. It takes a bit of rock climbing skills to reach the top of the Rockies, but definitely the effort is well rewarded by the breathtaking vista above it.

The campsite is situated atop the mountains shoulder. Winds can be strong to moderate and it can be quite chilly at night. The summit is another hour away from the campsite, although an alternative trail (the grotto trail) can be taken, traversing the mountain from the other side and then descending to the shoulder campsite. Views from the summit are obscured by forest growth and there is minimal camp space available.

Mt. Maculot’s reputaion has regrettably results a distressing levels of pollution up its slopes. Too much loose and immature camping has produced a bountiful garbage left all over the campgrounds. Refuse such as empty gin bottles to abandoned fire rings litter the place. Little is being done to address this environmental concern.

Calijon Falls

This falls is situated at Barangay San Gregorio previously known as Barangay Calijon around 4.5km east of Malvar, Batangas. Its waters come from natural springs just right above it which is reputed to be a very good source of fresh, sparkling drinking water. A well-known national distributor of bottled drinking water actually taps the springs above as its source of mineral water. The water from the falls is interestingly warm and pleasant to bathe in. The falls can be reached by taking a short hike from the barangay road and about 300 steps down the concrete pathway.

Mainit Hot Springs

Mainit Hot Springs is located in the Municipality of Caibiran in the island of Biliran. The local government has developed this place by constructing three small pools that will hold the flowing hot water coming from the islands' active volcanic and mountainous areas. The temperatures in the pool are classified as warm, hot and very hot - but these are all safe for a relaxing dip. In fact, I spent sometimes there just dipping alternately in those three pools.

The stones in the stream can be quite slippery because of the sulfuric residue that the hot springs produce. It should also be noted that the place seem to have only few visitors that whenever there are tourists to this place, flocks of local from the neighborhood suddenly appears and seem to be amused with the new faces they see. No need for concern thou 'coz these are friendly folks and they offer ready smiles for you.

Ilijan Lagoon

An exceptional waterfalls with water originate from a huge spring on top of a mountain and elegantly streaming from one bowl to another. It has seven huge stone bowls carved naturally out of the mountainsides and beautifully arranged like a flight of stairs.

Sombrero Island

On the surface, this island resembles a hat underwater, so its profile makes the name Sombrero quite appropriate. It could be access by banca southwest across the Maricaban Straight up to northwest of Sombrero Island. Gorgonians, black coral shells, turtles, rays grunts, snappers and a great variety of soft corals are abundant. Streams are normally strong and squally on the surface. Visibility can reach up to 80 feet, and average depth is 33 feet.

Mapating Rock

This open reef is for experienced divers only and its exploration may require assistance from a local dive guides. It could be accessed by banca southwest across the Maribacan Strait and around the northwest end of Maribacan Island. The rock itself is bounded by a fairly shallow area at about 35 feet, ending in a series of drop-offs running down to about 60 feet. The area is huge and the currents are ferocious. Marine life is abundant with different species of fish and quite a few pelagic varieties. Grey reef sharks and white tip reef sharks are occasionally seen in the area.

The Cathedral

Around 60 to 90 feet south of Bagalangit Point lay a giant rock formation that looks like a roofless underwater amphitheater. Between is a small cross planted at 50 feet by now ex Philippine President, Fidel Ramos and blessed by Pope John Paul II. It’s a Marine Park Sanctuary and the best-known Philippine dive sites. Unfruitful, the Cathedral has been seeded with corals from other sites. Flocks of fish eagerly congregate around the divers, waiting to be fed. Diving conditions is generally calm, but can have some strong currents. Visibility can reach 80 feet, and the site is best dived at neap tide.

Merriel’s Rock

The scuba diving site can be accessed by banca southwest across the Maricaban Strait and around the northwest tip of Maribacan Island. Severe streams may be experienced in this cluster of shallow reefs. Visibility can reach 80 feet, and average depth is 60 feet. The site is rich with a lot of different species. And there are numerous types of coral formations enough to fascinate a marine biologist. Divers are advised to dive in the morning, as it can get rough in the afternoon because of the wind.

Layag-Layag Reef

Located at the northwest corner of Caban Island. Layag-Layag can be reached by banca or boat from Eagle Point pier southwest across Maricaban strait. On the south side of this open-water area, is a ledge drop to about 90 feet from the surface. Big jacks swim to within a few feet of the surface, although the larger fish tend to be somewhat coy. Scuba diving conditions is calm with medium to fierce currents. It is considered to be a good snorkeling site. Average depth is 33 feet and visibility can reach 100 feet.

Ligpo Island

Location is 40 minutes north by banca and west of Ligpo Point. Diving conditions is generally serene but could have some ferocious currents that change rapidly. Novice divers are warned not to dive when currents are running. Average depth is 90 feet and visibility can reach 80 feet. Corals of different types and colossal gorgonians bound in the vicinity. The eastern shore has all the reef fishes, but when the current is running countless pelagic species can be seen out in the deep. Ligpo is a fine night dive at neap tides.

Malajibomanoc Island

The scuba diving site is 50 to 70 feet with a flat bottom and rational to harsh current. The major attraction is a hot spring in a hollow from 60 to 70 feet. It is being noted that when Taal Volcano has an increase in activity, the area releases fine hot bubbles. Diving conditions is generally calm with powerful currents, but could be very turbulent. Visibility can reach 80 feet and average depth is at 60 feet. Fish life is abundant with groupers, trumpetfish, moray eels, pufferfish and parrotfish. Even a Blacktip Reef Shark is often seen in the area.

Million years ago, a sequence volcanic activities and geologic forces molded the island-province of Batanes. Ivatans are the popular settlers of the province who nationally proclaimed as the “True Insulares”. This Ivatans derived from the ancient settlers from Formoso, Taiwan and Spaniards who had explored the island way back in the 16th century. Due to their limited existence, they have kept the clarity of their gene group through time.

The province of Batanes is the northernmost and the smallest province of the Philippine Republic, in terms of inhabitants and land area. Its capital is the municipality of Basco. The region consist of ten islands, known as the Batanes Islands, lies around162 km north of the Luzon mainland in the Luzon Strait and is a portion of the Cagayan Valley. The largest island of the province which bring significance to its economy are Itbayat, Batan and Sabtang.

Batanes Islands are divided from the Babuyan Islands of Cagayan Province through Balintang Channel and Taiwan through the Basi Channel. On the northernmost portion of the province is Mavudis (Yami) Island. The other islands of the province are Misanga, Ditarem, Siayan, Dinem, Ivuho and Dequey.

Geographical position of the province is spotted on a 4,500 square kilometer area of territorial waters, the Luzon Strait and Balintang Channel, where the Pacific Ocean unites with the South China Sea, a sea track between the Philippines and the southern portions of Japan, China, Hongkong, and Taiwan. Bordered on the north by the Bashi Channel, on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the west by the South China Sea, and on the south by the Balintang Channel. It is distinguished by lightly rolling hills, cliffs, and black and white sand beaches.

Batanes is about 860 kilometers (approx. 525 miles) from Manila. Basco, the capital town, is about 280 kilometers north of Aparri and about 190 kilometers south of Taiwan.

The land area of 5,438 hectares serves as the agricultural land of the province. Its main source of living is livestock farming due to its topography and its main produce is cattle, carabao and goats. Another prime industry which rises on its peak during summer as the seawater is moderately quiet is fishing.

EXPLORATIONS
December to May is the ideal period for travelers and explorers to come and visit the islands of Batanes. The islands tenders a cool and windy conditions. Any month of the year it could rain and its warmness can plunge as low as 7 degrees centigrade. It lies along the typhoon belt and gets its fair share of typhoons during the wet season.

Sabtang Island
Preferred by the Department of Tourism as among the 12 finest destination in the Philippines. This island remains uninterrupted and untouched which lies in the southwest of Batan. It has blinking white sand beaches, sheer mountains, and deep canyons with small level areas periodically found along the coastline. Accessible in 30 minutes by falowa (oval-shaped motorized passenger boat without the outrigger) from Radiwan Port in Ivana. This island is also the take-off point for Ivuhos Island from Barangay Nakanmuan.

Itbayat Island
The island is enclose with gigantic boulders and cliffs mounting 20-70 feet above sea level having no shoreline located on the north of Batan Island. It has a dirt airstrip for light aircraft. Ferries also run the Batan-Itbayat route, with a travel time of about four hours by falowa from the Basco Seaport. Light Planes fly from Basco Airport to Itbayat in 12-minute trips at PhP700.00/pax.

Batan Island
The center of business trade where the seat of the provincial government situated. Batan Island is the most inhabited among all the islands of the province.It is composed of the municipalities of Basco, Ivana, Uyugan, and Mahatao.

Mount Iraya
An inactive volcano rise at 1,517 meters high whose previous outbreak was documented in 505 AD. This peak is best for mountaineering, trekking, and trailblazing. Situated in a walking distance from Basco and can be climbed to the top in about three hours.

Mavudis Island
Mavudis is the northernmost island of Batanes. Coconut crabs (called "Tatus" by the locals) are bountiful on this island, which is surrounded by rich marine life.

Di-atay Beach is seen in this island, which lies on the national highway between Mahatao and Ivana, 9.85 kilometer away from Basco. The beach has a wonderful cove and multicolored rocks and blinking white sand, which is perfect for picnics.

Songsong Ruins

San Carlos Borromeo Church
Founded in 1789 and built in 1873, it has a portico shaped after that of Basco Cathedral, with two round arches at roof level for the bells. On its outer walls are massive buttresses that used to serve as stairways to the roof – a thing of convenience in the olden days when frequent repairs had to be made to the cogon grass roofing. The church still retains its centuries-old features. Located six kilometers from Basco.

Sto. Doming de Basco
It is the oldest and the most significant church in Batanes which instituted in 1783. The church were supported with enormous pilasters from its foundation to top to offer firmness on its portico and strength against earthquakes and typhoons. BRIEF HISTORY
In 1635-1644 moros hostility frequently pester the Visayan islands. To protect the population from this hostility, watchtower and stone walls were constructed in various parts of the archipelago. These towering walls were dubbed as “Bantayan sa Hari” which denotes “Watchtowers of the King” served as sentry for the arriving pirate ship. Davao City History

Regional historians claimed that the word davao originated from the phonetic combination of the word of three Bagobo subgroups when referring to Davao River, a significant watercourse which drains itself into Davao Gulf near the city. The indigenous Obos who dwells in the hinterlands of the region called the river, Davoh; the Clatta or Guiangans called it Duhwow, or Davau, and the Tagabawa Bagobos, Dabu. To the Obos, the word davoh also means a place "beyond the high grounds", alluding to the community situated at the doorway of Davao River which were surrounded by high rolling hills. When asked where they were going, the usual reply is davoh, while pointing towards the direction of the town. Duhwow also refers to a trading village where they switch their forest merchandise in exchange for salt and other commodities.

Spanish authority was scarcely experienced in the Davao until 1848, when a mission directed by Don Jose Uyanguren came to build a Christian colony in the region of mangrove swamps that is now Bolton Riverside. Davao was then ruled by a Muslim chieftain, Datu Bago, who held his settlement at the banks of Davao River (once called Tagloc River by the Bagobos). After Uyanguren defeated Datu Bago, he renamed the region Nueva Guipuzcoa, in honor of his home in Spain, and became its first governor. Uyanguren's attempts to expand the area, however, did not prosper.

A few years following the American forces landed in 1900, private farm possession grew and transportation and communication facilities were enhanced, thus paving the way for the region's economic development.

A Japanese capitalist named Kichisaburo Ohta was given authority to develop enormous land which he converted into abaca and coconut plantations. The first wave of Japanese plantation workers came onto its shores in 1903, creating a Little Japan. They had their own school, newspapers, an embassy, and even a Shinto Shrine. On the whole, they established wide abaca plantations around the shores of Davao Gulf and developed large-scale commercial interests such as copra, timber, fishing and import-export trading. Filipinos learned the techniques of enhanced cultivation from the Japanese so that ultimately, agriculture became the living of the province's economic prosperity.

Davao was officially inaugurated as a chartered city on March 1, 1937 by President Manuel L. Quezon. Thirty years later, Davao was subdivided into three self-governing provinces, namely Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. Over the years, Davao has turn an ethnic melting pot as it continues to pull out migrants from all over the country, lured by the possibilities of striking it rich in the country's third largest city.

On December 8, 1941 Japanese planes bombed the city. Japanese occupation started in 1942.

In 1945, American and the Philippine Commonwealth forces released Davao City from Japanese forces.

Butuan City

Situated at the Northeastern region of Agusan Valley extending across the Agusan River is Butuan City, known for its colorful history and culture. BUTUAN is a term believed to have originated from the sour fruit “Batuan”. Others opined, it came from a certain “Datu Buntuan”, a chieftain who once ruled Butuan. Scholars alleged, it came from the word “But-an”, which factually means a person who has sound and perceptive nature. Whichever concepts come out convincing relies on the class of people residing in Butuan, for whatever is said about them, Butuan continues to live on.

Butuan’s past, culture, arts and people date back to the 4th century as showcased in museums which makes Butuan an exhilarating foundation of cultural artifacts in Mindanao.

In early 10th century, according to the Chinese Song Shi, people from Butuan had already instituted trading interactions with the kingdom of Champa in what is now South Vietnam. By the 11th century, Butuan was the core of business in the Philippines. The preeminent proofs to attest this truth is the sightings of 9 barangays and other archeological finds in the neighborhood of Butuan City, particularly in Ambangan, Libertad near the old EL RIO de BUTUAN and MASAO River.

History

It's promising to climb the peak of a mountain and see the panoramic scene of a city and the innumerable stars and shooting stars at night without climbing practice at all, yet having the fulfillment of "having gone up there" after just a few hours of sweat.

Welcome to Mt. Agad-agad, just 1,600 feet above sea level. This mountain is simply noticeable from city center of Iligan, and one can promptly conclude it's the highest peak around.

It's nothing but a molehill contrasted to Mt. Apo or Mt. Kitanglad, the country's highest peaks. But high enough to make the uninitiated soaking wet after a few hours of trekking.

At the peak, the panoramic overlooking scene of Iligan City and Mt. Malindang in Misamis Occidental right across Iligan Bay is a spectacle. But linger till evening when the city lights look like the reflection of the stars.

Tinago Falls

Legend has it that there once lived an influential and powerful Sultan Agok and her wife. They were appointed by their people as their king and queen. But they become too proud of themselves and became selfish rulers of their kingdom. When the sultan's wife was pregnant, an enchantress, disguised as a beggar, begged for their help but instead they exiled and rejected her. Because of this, the enchantress cursed the couple that the child will become ugly but they did not took it seriously and permanently banished the enchantress.

When the child was born, the child did become ugly. The couple was sad and disappointed, expecting the baby to be as lovely as her mother. They hid the child in a cave to avoid embarrassment and named the baby Tin-ag, which means "hidden face". They visited and took care of the baby in the cave.

When the child grew up, she came out of the cave and became amazed at what she saw. The enchantress, who cursed her parents, saw her and made an offer to transform her into something of great beauty and splendor. She accepted the offer and became the Tinago Falls.

Tinago Falls is a waterfall in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Iligan City. Tinago is a Filipino term meaning "hidden", the falls being hidden in a deep ravine. Trekking to the falls requires approximately 500 descending steps called the winding staircase.

The falls is high, its very cold water cascading beautifully into a deep and calm basin-like pool which appears like a blue-colored lagoon. Under the falls is a small cave where people can enter and listen to the rumbling waters

Iligan City Background

Iligan's history began four centuries ago in the Kingdom of Panglao, a trading post southwest of Bohol. In the accounts of Jesuit historian Fr. Francisco Combes, the Mollucan King of Ternate invaded Panglao. This caused Panglaons to flee in large numbers to Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte.

In Dapitan, the surviving Prince of Panglao, Pagbuaya, received Legazpi's expedition in 1565. Later, Pagbuaya's son Manook was baptized Pedro Manuel Manook. The Christianized Manook subdued the Higaunon village in Bayug and established it as one of the earliest Christian settlements in the country. The settlement survived other raids from other enemies, and, because of their faith in God and in their patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel, the early Iliganons moved their settlement from Bayug to Iligan.

The name Iligan is from the Higaunon word "iligan" or "ilijan," meaning "fortress of defense" against frequent attacks by pirates and other hostile Mindanao tribes.

In 1850, because of floods, Don Remigio Cabili, then Iligan's governadorcillo, built another fort and moved the poblacion of the old Iligan located at the mouth of Tubod River west of the old market to its present site.

A stone fort called Fort St. Francis Xavier was built in 1642 where Iliganons sought refuge during raids by bandits. But again, the fort sank due to floods. Another fort was built and this was named Fort Victoria or Cota de Iligan.

The Spaniards abandoned Iligan in 1899, paving the way for the landing of the American forces in 1900. After enjoying peace and prosperity for about 40 years, Iligan was invaded by Japanese forces in 1942. The Japanese held sway in the city until 1944 when they left Iligan suddenly. On November 15, 1944, the city held a Commonwealth Day parade to celebrate the end of Japanese atrocity and occupation.

Iligan became a chartered city of Lanao del Norte on June 16, 1950. It was declared a first class city in 1969 and was reclassified as First Class City "A" on July 1, 1977 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 465. In 1983, Iligan was again reclassified as a highly urbanized city.

LAND AREA

Iligan City encompasses 44 barangays with a land area of 81,337 hectares, which is about 25 percent of the total land area of Lanao del Norte and is 3.13 percent of the land area of Central Mindanao.

The land classification map for Iligan illustrates that less than 30% of the total land area is alienable and disposable (A and D) while the rest are either Permanent or Productive Forests. Based on existing land use by broad category , about 37 percent of the total land area is utilized for agriculture; 56 percent is forest land; only 6.3 percent are built-up areas and the remaining 0.7 percent are mineral lands.

TOPOGRAPHY AND VEGETATION
Iligan City's topography is characterized by a narrow coastal alluvial plain fronting Iligan Bay at the foot slopes of undulating hills and mountains. Several river valleys are found in the city with relatively steep slopes. At the mouth of Agus River, very steep slopes separate the coast line and the highland areas. Over 12% of the city's land area has elevations of less than 100 meters above mean sea level (amsl), 21% are within 100 to 300 meters amsl, while the remaining areas of more than 65% are with elevations of 300 meters amsl and above.

The predominant vegetative cover consistS of coconut groves and banana plantations which are found in plateaus and other lowlands as well as in slopes and highlands. Heavy tropical forests are found in slopes of 30% and greater and these are mostly located inland. A few swampy areas covered with marsh grass are within the barangays of Del Carmen and Bagong Silang. Some fruit trees such as mango, durian, jackfruit and tropical hardwood like lauan, molave, apitong, etc., are scattered in cultivated areas in the hinterland barangays.

CLIMATE CONDITION

Iligan falls within the third type of climate wherein the seasons are not very pronounced. Rain is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year. Because of its tropical location the city does not experience cold weather. Neither does it experience strong weather disturbances due to its geographical location (being outside the typhoon belt) And also because of the mountains that are surrounding the city.

TRADITION AND CULTURE

In the 1950's when Iligan's famous Maria Cristina Falls became the major source of power, Iligan's population increased rapidly. Majority of Iligan's population come from the Visayas and migrants from the other places of Mindanao. Iligan is literally and geographically located at the crossroad of rich culture the Maranao's of Lanao del Sur, Higaunon's of Bukidnon, the dominantly Christian settlers and migrants. Evidence of this peaceful co-existence of the varied cultural mix on its general community. Evidence of this peaceful co-existence manifested during the annual celebration of the city fiesta honoring its miraculous patron saint, St. Michael the Archangel. SOIL TYPES AND SOIL EROSION
About 65 percent of its total land area, has the unclassified mountainous type of soil. This type is mostly found in the Mainit and Rogongon areas. Also predominant in the Barangay of Rogongon is the Jasaan Clay Loam which comprises about 15% of Iligan's land area. Along the coastal barangays, predominant soil types are Isabela Clay Loam, Matina Clay Loam, San Miguel Silt Loam and Bolinao Clay Loam. These are commonly called the alluvial plains and comprises about 20% of Iligan's land area.

DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT
Economic Development will be directed towards agriculture and tourism at the same time maintaining Iligan City’s role as industrial center.

Business activity will be distributed by creating nodes or satellite business districts thereby decongesting the central business district. A circumferential road will connect these nodes.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Poverty incidence in Iligan City (for 1998) is 54.64 percent. Out of the 54.64 percent, 43.2 percent are in the subsistence level. These are the households whose income cannot even meet the minimum food requirement that is necessary to ensure the caloric needs (2,000 calories per day) for survival. The remaining 11.44 percent belong to a relatively higher income bracket but are nevertheless characterized as poor, albeit poor, whose income suffice to cover the subsistence food needs but not the non-food essentials (e.g. housing, medical care, education and clothing expenses).

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Iligan City will assume the following roles in the future: industrial center, tourist destination; orchard and cut flower center; catchment and transhipment point in the western terminal of the CIC and from Central Mindanao and Zamboanga. Efficient transport and mobility system, modern and reliable communication and adequate infrastructure therefore is important in the realization of the plan.

Infrastructure sector composed of six (6) sub-sectors namely: Transport and Mobility, Water Supply, Power, Drainage, Sewerage and Communication takes into account the more recent data and endeavored to include the various suggestions and comments derived from previous workshops/consultations.

ENVIRONMENT PLAN

The Philippines Agenda 21 which states that, for the benefit of future generations, present generations should be modest in utilizing the natural resources. This has brought the concern of Local Government Units (LGU’s) not only in matters of environmental protection but equally in matters of development. Development that is desired to be achieved must create a balance between economy and ecology. Thus, the existence of this plan will lead the way for realization of Iligan’s desire for a sustainable development.

The environment sector plan consists of three (3) sub-sectors; The Upland and Watershed Environment, Coastal Environment and Urban Environment. These sub-sector plans are the output of series of workshops done by the environment stakeholders who graciously shared their time and knowledge to direct the city to a better future.

Existing Land Uses. Of the city’s total area of 81,337 ha., 6.5% are used for urban land uses; 37% is effective agricultural land; 56% are second growth and old growth forests; while less than 1% is mineral land.

The existing Zoning Ordinance of 1975 specified the following land use areas/zones: residential, commercial-residential, heavy industry, light industry, buffer and open zones.

Iligan has about 900 ha. of inland bodies of water. The city has an abundant supply of water for domestic and industrial use.

Commercial development in the city is comprised of the old Central Business District (CBD), an extension of the CBD and commercial activities found in major and minor thoroughfares.

There are 2 types of industrial zones in the city: Light Industry and Heavy Industry. These areas are along coastal barangays. Agro-industrial uses can also be found in the city center.

URBAN LAND DEMAND
As of Year 2000, the estimated population of the city is 325,184. By Year 2010, the population is projected to be 461,370. New household formation is estimated to be 26,000.

Land Demand in the next ten years for all zones is 541 hectares.

Legend of Maria Cristina Falls

Long time ago Lake Lanao ruled by Omaca-an, a giant monster eating human beings and animals and even fishes in the water. There were only few people around the lake because of the monster existence that ate everything he encountered. Years had passed when Rajah Indarapatra came with his beloved brother Rajah Solaiman. Rajah Solaiman was the first to come and he fought the giant but was killed. Rajah Indarapatra followed, looking for his brother Solaiman. Indarapatra encountered the giant Omaca-an and killed the giant man-eater. On land, he looked for the ring of his brother by asking the small and big animals he meet. On water, however, he went swimming everyday and gathered stones beneath the water. He stayed for several years along the shores of the lake, but to no avail of the ring. He constructed an irrigation system that went very far and covered a big distance which later became a river currently known as Agus River. The river had a portion which dropped down a deep ravine known now as the Maria Cristina Falls.

For number of years, there lived in the falls two loving sisters, namely: Maria the younger and Cristina the elder. These two beautiful ladies loved each other very much. Maria gaze everything she had to Cristina, her beloved sister. Many People knew they were the ones living near the falls. They also loved their neighbor as they loved themselves. Datus and Sultans came to ask for their hands in marriage but the sister refused. There was a man, however, son of a prominent Sultan living somewhere beside the Lake Lanao. For many years he was unhappy because he could not find a suitable partner. He roamed around the lake until he saw the two maidens of the falls. He fell in love with the two sisters but the two sisters did not know whom he really loved. Days had passed and Maria discovered that she loved him very much, which made her very sad and she went to the top of the falls and jumped. When Cristina found out that Maria was dead, she likewise went to the top of the falls and threw herself down the deep ravine. When the handsome young man discovered the situation and found the body, he buried them carefully under the falls. After the death of the two sisters, he never married until also died. He also named the falls, Maria Cristina after the two sisters he loved.

Iligan City Early History

The earliest Spanish accounts refer to Iligan(or Yligan/Elegin) as the name of the settlement found at the mouth of the river that bears the same name(also Tambacan to many people).It was this same settlement that the early Jesuits in Mindanao came upon sometime in the 1630s. Around the 18^th century, Iligan referred to the large military province or corregimiento, which comprised the present-day provinces of Lanao, Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte, and portions of Misamis Oriental. When Ferdinand Blumentritt cited the earlier ethnographic accounts pointing to Subanos as the inhabitants of Iligan he must have referred to the corregimientos Misamis-Zamboanga side, concededly Subano territory till the present.

The Padres Recoletos are reported to have introduced Christianity in the area ahead of the Jesuits, the work having been begun by Fray Nicolas de San Juan who was the visitador of Bayug Island some three kilometers east of the present Poblacion. This was in 1626. There is reason to believe, however, that the natives of Bayug(whom I suspect to be ancestors of the Higa-onons of Barangay Rogongon, this city) had their first contacts with Christianized natives with the conquest of their territory ( in all likelihood towards the end of the 16^th century) by Pedro Manuel Manook, a Dapitan warrior of considerable military and navigational skills. He showed Legaspi the way to the petty-kingdoms of Luzon. Both the Jesuits and the Recoletos will later be engaged in a scandalous battle fought in ecclesiastical and governmental courts to gain control over Iligan and neighboring areas.

Iligan has been traditionally used by both Spanish and American colonizers as the launching pad of their pacification campaigns against the Lanao "Moros." Thus, for more than two centuries, Iligan was practically a garrison town defended largely by Pampango and Boholano conscripts. It is reported that at the turn of the 20^th century, Iligan had a population of only 3,000.

Like the other coastal settlements, Iligan was also constantly attacked by the Muslims, a retaliatory action against the Spanish intruders. In 1639, on order of Gov. Gen. Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera, Captain Francisco de Atienza y Vañez, a tried warrior from Toledo, Spain, constructed six collapsible boats, each capable of carrying 50 to 100 men, to be assembled at Lake Lanao. As in charge of Iligan, and after receiving suggestions from Fr. Fray Agustin(known as Padre Capitan) on the military technique and strategy against the Muslim strongholds, he led as expedition to Malanao. After the fall of Marawi to the Spaniards, the Muslims continued to harass the enemy on the sea and on land. They even cut off the supply route from Iligan, causing Atienza to pull back and fortify Iligan from the increasing Muslim attacks.

In later years, the poblacion of Iligan began to sink. Another fort was built by Gobernadorcillo Remigio Cabili and the town was transferred to its present site.

After Corcuera's rule, the Maranao were left to themselves, almost to the end of the Spanish rule. With Iligan as springboard, the Spanish troops were again sent to Marawi in 1891. Governor-General Eulogio Despujol continued the campaign to subjugate the lake region. However, it was Governor Ramon Blanco who established the Spanish power in the region. In 1895, Blanco with 5000 men under the immediate command of General Parrado, landed in Iligan and succeeded in conquering the Muslim cottas and the stronghold of Marahui, known as the strongest in Lanao.

In 1896, when the Philippine revolution broke out, an insurrection also occurred in Iligan. Three years later, the gobernadorcillo abandoned the town, and Captain Hilarion Ramiro took over the reins of the government. He received the Americans forces under the command of Captain Smith who landed at Iligan in 1900.
