border="0" /> On January 30th 2009, Ewa-Marine introduced the new VEX3 underwater housing for the SONY PMW-EX3 digital camcorder. This has been a popular housing and has been difficult to obtain in the USA since the demand for this case has far exceeded the supply.

The Ewa company also launched another product to offer Sony PMW-EX3 owners more options in protecting their valuable video cameras. So they designed a special rain cape / hurricane hood which is designated as the VC-EX3 and has been added to their line-up of camcorder rain capes.

The VC-EX3 rain cape is manufactured from Ewa-Marine's patented triple laminated PVC and has an integrated, optically neutral, flat glass lens port.

You fix the camcorder in the rain cape by attaching the CAF adapter to the lens. The camcorder is then fitted into the front port. This system mates the rain cape to the camcorder and keeps the front port in front of the lens, like having an optional clear filter.

Your video camcorder can be used on a tripod while it is under the rain cape and allows the use of your hands to make any needed adjustments.

You can be close the bottom of VC-EX3 rain cape with snaps / press-studs which are located along the bottom.

The VC-EX3 rain cape's dimensions are as follows:

Length: 40 cm (15.8 inches)

Width: 12 cm (4.7 inches)

Height: 28 cm (11 inches)

Position of View Finder: Left Side

Front Glass Diameter: 95 mm / (3.7 inches)

Weight: 300 grams / (0.66 lbs)

Ewa-Marine SplashiX Housing

There's a new housing range called the Ewa-Marine SplashiX. This can cause some aggravating condensation conditions.

Here's a link to some information that may help you solve that problem and help you to keep that $1000 + in your wallet without dropping it on a high end solution that you really don't need. Check out the info in the FAQ section at Keep It Dry Case and try it out!

"WATER DROPLETS ON THE FRONT PORT: Whenever you wish to take a half & half photo; 1/2 of the picture under the water and 1/2 of the picture over the water level, you will find some drops of water sticking to the front port above the water level. To avoid this, rub the outside of the front port with a slice of apple. The fruit acid in the apple will break the surface tension of the water and stop the drops from forming. Depending on the water, salt or fresh, the application must be repeated after 3 to 5 minutes." Dont forget to use the silica moisture muncher packet in the housing as well.

Also, in the customer gallery, the stunning pic of the trout picking up a fly was shot by a professional photographer in a trout stream and he mentioned that "putting the air right out of your scuba regulator hose takes out any condensation."

I wanted to share this info for those who are looking for that perfect half and half shot or video clip!

Finding Your Ewa-Marine Housing!

To save a lot of guesswork, when trying to find the correct housing for your digital, slr, digital slr or video cameras, you can always take advantage of the Ewa-Marine factory fitting guides at Keep It Dry Case.com.

On the left side navigation bar, toward the bottom, there's a "gold" link named Ewa-Marine Fitting Guides. Ewa-Marine, the benchmark housing for shallow dive housings has a housing for you.

I read dive forums and folks either love them or hate them, but the most "snobbish" posters generally state, "they are good for snorkeling." They also feature hardened optical grade neutral lenses in the lens ports which is a far cry from the other knock-offs who use PVC in their lens ports.

I'm a Canon fan so I'm going to put you on to a housing that accommodates both the G3 and the G5 with amazing results in picture quality. They also have a new hard front port installed, allowing the sensitive zoom lenses to operate without any interference. The new front port is welded directly onto the Ewa-Marine housing, insuring a safe and extremely strong bond between the housing and the port.

No more zooming out and bumping the lens, only to have it retract or use your camera's motor to push the front port out against the pressure of the depth you're going to shoot at. All said, this is a super little 33 foot depth rated, underwater housing solution for the Canon G3 or G5!

Kayaking History

The Inuit and Aleut tribes of Arctic North America were the first people to build and use kayaks. There were two basic types of kayaks at this point: One was built with light driftwood, while the others were made by stretching animal skins over frames made of whalebone. The tribe members used whale fat to waterproof the vessels. To improve buoyancy, they'd fill seal bladders with air and tuck them into the fore and aft sections.

In 1936, the Olympics included kayak races in the Berlin games. The United States began to get on board at this point, as did women. Two years after the Olympics, Genevieve De Colmont paddled the white-water of the Green and Colorado rivers. Fiberglass "rigid" kayaks came on the scene in the 1950s and were the standard until polyethylene plastic took over in the 1980s. Kayaking enjoyed modest participation as a fringe sport in the U.S. until the 1970s, when it began to move more to the mainstream. Now the Olympic Games feature more than 10 different white-water kayak events.

Stop by here for more information on Kayaking!

Ewa-Marine Authorized Dealers

There are many outlets selling the Ewa-Marine product line in the Yahoo! For all water sports enthusiasts, especially boarders. I'd recommend this site for a look around. But no more, I discovered a nifty little item that attaches to my swimming shorts (inside or outside) and takes the hassle of hiding things when getting up to leave my "spot."

It's a 4 by 4 inch Ewa-Marine Belt Safe Pouch. Only you know what is behind the solid colored partition.

If you have penchant for "fun in the sun" and hanging out at the beach or at poolside, this little lightweight, waterproof pouch may be just what you're looking for!

Planning A Dream Vacation?

If you have a vacation planned for a tropical island and want to make your memories last, you ordinarily bring your camera along right? Of course! What if you love to snorkel or scuba dive? Shouldn't you bring your camera long as well? Sure, but you'll need to have it enclosed in a waterproof housing to get those shots of a lifetime.

Ewa-Marine carries custom fitted flexible housings for all makes and models of photo cameras and recorders. What would be cooler than watching your own movies of rare tropical fish? All you need is a waterproof camcorder case to put your video camera inside and shoot shoals of beautiful and colorful fish moving along a reef feeding and hiding from predators.

Or, if you're a digital camera owner you can take still shots or video clips using an Ewa-Marine waterproof digital camera case. This gives you the best of both worlds stills and video!

Just a word about Ewa flexible housings. They are the most talked about housings in the world. Why, because the guys with deep pockets and large vehicles think that a clear shot can only be taken with a "hard case" which is extremely expensive and very cumbersome. They scoff at the Ewa-Marine housings which have sold more housings than any other company brand.

The fact is, Ewa housings are very versatile, light yet solid to their depth ratings and deliver beautiful underwater shots. They are very affordable and a darn sight cheaper than any of the big brand hard cases. They have a hardened, neutral, optical grade lens embedded in their lens ports, unlike other "knock off" flexible housings brands which allows you to capture the shot as you see it. Other flexible housings rely on Plexiglas lenses which get cloudy and nicked easily and rarely would produce a shot to compare with an Ewa housing.

Ewa-Marine housings use locking nuts and bolts to secure the closure rails not plastic snaps or sliding closures. This site has so many features it's difficult to simply report on, it must be experienced to be truly appreciated. A tip of the hat to the producers of this great website!

If you surf Hawaii or are planning a trip for that purpose - this is a must stop! I have to warn you though - you may suffer from information overload. They have thought of everything you would want to know and loads more. Check it out!

Here are a few up to date surfing condition quotes:

"Surf along north facing shores will be 4 to 6 feet today lowering to 2 to 4 feet Tuesday."

"Surf along east facing shores will be 2 to 3 feet today lowering to 1 to 3 feet Tuesday."

"Surf along south facing shores will be 2 to 3 feet today lowering to 1 to 3 feet Tuesday."

"Surf along west facing shores will be 2 to 3 feet through Monday lowering to 1 to 2 feet Tuesday."

"Outlook through Sunday Nov 16. A new northwest swell will arrive on Wednesday and build quickly overnight. This swell will peak Thursday with surf along north facing shores likely exceeding the advisory level of 15 feet. Another northwest swell is expected late Sunday and may bring above advisory level surf of 15 feet along north facing shores. Current south swell will slowly subside Wednesday."

Links on this site include various surfing competitions, inter-active, real time video of various hotspots around the HI islands, weather reports and other goodies such as this piece regarding Shark Warnings!

"The Department of Land and Natural Resources is urging all ocean users to be wary of sharks when in the water, citing current reports of large sharks in Hawaii's near shore waters and the shark bite of a surfer on Tuesday."

"Do not enter the water where shark warning signs are posted; in all other areas please exercise caution when entering the water."

"Although there is no definitive explanation for increased shark presence in near shore waters, experienced fishermen and scientists know that some shark species come into shallower waters during this time of year for spawning, which increases the chances of interaction between sharks and people, DLNR officials said."

I hope you all will enjoy this hotbed of information as much as I did. While he was there, he had the foresight to obtain an 99 year renewable lease for a good amount of acreage from the Government. It consisted of a small harbor and large, natural log cabin and surrounding woods. It was somewhere along Honey Harbor in the Georgian Bay.

My father and I discussed how popular the boxes of vintage lures he has, are on eBay, to collectors. Pop has always kept them stored in waterproof all purpose bags and that precaution has kept some of his 1950 era lures and plugs in nearly flawless mint condition. The sheer volume of artificials that he collected, many before I was born, is staggering and going through them is like traveling back in time. Each plug, spoon, hand painted jitterbug has it's own special memory of a morning or a warm afternoon, a boy with a small boat and very, very large fish.

I found myself recalling stored away black and white photographs of myself as a youth, holding up Northern Pike so large that I couldn't keep their tails from touching the ground! One old, faded photo which I wish had been taken with a good Digital SLR camera (for preservation) is one holding a Pike as I've only read about being available but hardly ever see, except on fishing magazine covers.

That Pike was taken at about two hours before dark in a small inlet filed with a dense water grass near shore and lily pads rolling out to meet the open water. We fished that inlet for an hour and Grandpa was telling me to "reel it in - we're going home." Something inside me said "one more" and I verbalized that to Gramps as the large Johnson spoon, tipped with a pork rind splashed perfectly right into a pool in the lily pads.

Within two or three cranks the fish exploded into the spoon and bent my rod almost to the breaking point as line screamed off the reel - the only "drag" being one's thumb on the spool. The line held, the knots were well tied and after an exhausting 15 minutes of wondering what it was - a Great Northern boiled near the surface and made one last desperate run, which eventually tired the fish and allowed us to finally snatch him into the boat. A true monster - I would be the envy of everyone and smiled all the way back to the cabin!

Next day Grandpa was into the live well and got busy cleaning the big fish when I came outside. Upon his motioning me to come, I noticed that he seemed to be struggling furiously with a pair of pliers. When I arrived at his fish cleaning table he tossed me the Johnson Spoon that he had just extricated from the fishes jaw. I was aghast to see that it was twisted a full 180 degrees and the hook was almost straightened out before he got it to pop loose.

The old lures were art and fishing tools, where by comparison, the modern offerings are for the most part much better and highly productive. They still don't inspire the sort of memories that a wooden, hand painted, glass eyes, fore and aft propellers. torpedo shaped, casting plug does when you cradle one in your hand and remember.

The Steelhead Are Gathering

They're Back!

Along the Lake Erie shores, at most of the tributaries, the Steelhead are gathering at the mouths and ready to move upstream. Nothing turns my friend on more than catching steelhead, browns, rainbows locally and nearby.

He alerted me Sunday night that they were going to be out and hitting some honey holes this week. Not being an avid trout fisherman I still manage to get excited discussing new tackle or other gear obtained since the last run of fish.

I asked him what they were using for bait and he relied "anything", translating to live bait, spinners, spoons, flies and jigs. He told me he was having his best luck with a hand tied jig, very lightly weighted and trailing about 6 feet behind a small bobber to keep it running at just the right depth for his presentations. This is an easily adjusted rig, slide the bobber forward to run shallower or let more line out to run a bit deeper. Of course the rate of retrieval can account for much of the same manual adjustments.

I told him that I found that very interesting, since we have for years, used the same technique on ultralight spinning gear to land large panfish. They really hit it hard, the bobber snapping straight into the air when the giant bluegills, rock bass, crappie and other panfish took the lure. This rig absolutely triggers some slamming hook-ups!

He whipped out his small fly box and showed me his handiwork grinning as he described the lethal attributes of each and every fly and jig. I smiled too, although not a salmon or trout fisherman, I am a dedicated fisherman, I just target other species as my favorites.

I went out to the car and made him a gift of an Ewa-Marine waterproof all purpose pouch to slide his small metal lure case into. His aluminum case might not rust but the waterproof pouch will also keep your gear floating, bobbing at the surface of the water for an easy and welcome retrieval.

Time to get the waders out guys, looks like those robust steelhead will be hanging around within casting distance soon, if they're not already!

Jet Ski Legislation

No More Whining!

Recently, legislation has been passed - since rumors last year began circulating about what could be done to avoid the unsafe practices, along with the constant nerve grinding whine, that the increasing thousands of jet skis were creating in our area of the Great Lakes.

Being a fun loving water sports kind of guy, I even got to a point where the mere sight of SUV's full of tourists, towing one or more of these wild little watercraft made me cringe as well. They wouldn't follow the "rules of the road", like speeding through channels of slow moving boats at 50 mph, weaving in and out of traffic and generally pissing people off.

Local tourism areas began publishing stories about such infractions to such a point that local State Representatives finally have passed a bill that requires jet ski operators to pass testing before they can be licensed to operate them on the lake.

What a relief it's been this summer without the hundreds of jet ski's mindlessly racing back and forth without any purpose but to spin around and capsize on their own wakes. No more 10 yr old operators who don't know how to read the speed signs in channels or care to obey them if they could read to begin with. Jet skis aren't particularly loved in our area, chiefly a fishing haven, where such antics not well tolerated by serious minded visitors.

The USCG is really showing a much stronger than usual presence this past summer and things have quieted down by 75%. A much needed fix to a viral problem these watercraft were becoming. Perhaps the great leap in fuel prices had something to add to these other measures.

Again, let me say that a jet ski is a lot of fun to ride but they have, for some or all of these reasons, slowed down, making for a much quieter and safer summer with less jet ski's on the lake. I hope that any readers who love these little critters don't get too ruffled, but something had to give. A little common sense has limited the amount of nuisance they caused but responsible operators are still welcome!

Perch Bonanza In Lake Erie!

Perch Fishing In Full Swing

My friends at the local fish company have told me that the near shore perch honey holes are producing decent catches of Yellow Perch, but are very small and barely "keeper" sized.

Compare these catches with those being taken in deeper water, North and East of the Bass Islands and I'm told that the perch being taken much further from shore and near the Canadian border are enormous. Really big hauls of monster yellow perch!

They told me that clients are catching 4 and 5 man limits in just under an hour, lots of double headers and all very, very big. Like 10 to 12 inches average size. As our old buddy Al Lindner says "I heard dat, some really big pigs!"

While this area is famous for Walleye primarily, Fall offers a bonanza of jumbo yellow perch and smallmouth bass fishing. If you're in the area you can rent private charters for 6 people or take your sweet time and take a fishing trip on one of the many "head" or "walk on" boats for a pittance. You're bound to catch enough for dinner and have a great day on the water. Don't forget to have your waterproof camera with you for memories of your fishing trip!

You know what Auggie says right?
