Ewa-Marine VC-EX3 Rain Cape

On January 30th 2009, Ewa-Marine introduced the new VEX3 underwater housing for the SONY PMW-EX3 digital camcorder. This has been a popular housing and has been difficult to obtain in the USA since the demand for this case has far exceeded the supply.

The Ewa company also launched another product to offer Sony PMW-EX3 owners more options in protecting their valuable video cameras. So they designed a special rain cape / hurricane hood which is designated as the VC-EX3 and has been added to their line-up of camcorder rain capes.

The VC-EX3 rain cape is manufactured from Ewa-Marine's patented triple laminated PVC and has an integrated, optically neutral, flat glass lens port.

You fix the camcorder in the rain cape by attaching the CAF adapter to the lens. The camcorder is then fitted into the front port. This system mates the rain cape to the camcorder and keeps the front port in front of the lens, like having an optional clear filter.

Your video camcorder can be used on a tripod while it is under the rain cape and allows the use of your hands to make any needed adjustments.

You can be close the bottom of VC-EX3 rain cape with snaps / press-studs which are located along the bottom.

For only about $45 you can own an Ewa-Marine housing. It will be protected your camera from sand, dust and water. You can even take it underwater!

SplashiX comes in a selection of sizes to fit all compact, digital cameras. Just measure the depth and height of your camera to check which one will fit.

Naturally, all SplashiX housings are made by Ewa-Marine in Germany and only come with an HD-quality, optical glass front port, to ensure that you can get perfect quality pictures. Tested and rated to 6m / 20ft depth!

There are 3 different sizes of the SplashiX housing, each size with two different front ports:

Ewa-Marine Housings - Half and Half Shots

Using the Ewa-Marine waterproof digital camera housing for taking half and half shots can be tricky since the camera and case are exposed to the warmth of the sun and the lower half of the camera body is in cooler water. This can cause some aggravating condensation conditions.

Here's a link to some information that may help you solve that problem and help you to keep that $1000 + in your wallet without dropping it on a high end solution that you really don't need. Check out the info in the FAQ section at Keep It Dry Case and try it out!

"WATER DROPLETS ON THE FRONT PORT: Whenever you wish to take a half & half photo; 1/2 of the picture under the water and 1/2 of the picture over the water level, you will find some drops of water sticking to the front port above the water level. To avoid this, rub the outside of the front port with a slice of apple. The fruit acid in the apple will break the surface tension of the water and stop the drops from forming. Depending on the water, salt or fresh, the application must be repeated after 3 to 5 minutes." Dont forget to use the silica moisture muncher packet in the housing as well.

Also, in the customer gallery, the stunning pic of the trout picking up a fly was shot by a professional photographer in a trout stream and he mentioned that "putting the air right out of your scuba regulator hose takes out any condensation."

Kayaking History

The Inuit and Aleut tribes of Arctic North America were the first people to build and use kayaks. There were two basic types of kayaks at this point: One was built with light driftwood, while the others were made by stretching animal skins over frames made of whalebone. The tribe members used whale fat to waterproof the vessels. To improve buoyancy, they'd fill seal bladders with air and tuck them into the fore and aft sections.

In 1936, the Olympics included kayak races in the Berlin games. The United States began to get on board at this point, as did women. Two years after the Olympics, Genevieve De Colmont paddled the white-water of the Green and Colorado rivers. Fiberglass "rigid" kayaks came on the scene in the 1950s and were the standard until polyethylene plastic took over in the 1980s. Kayaking enjoyed modest participation as a fringe sport in the U.S. until the 1970s, when it began to move more to the mainstream. Now the Olympic Games feature more than 10 different white-water kayak events.

I'd never heard of fresh water surfing but wonders never cease right? I have discovered an entire website devoted not only to fresh water surfing but there are sections devoted to sub-categories such as wake surfing, lake surfing, river surfing, kayaking and more.

This site is loaded with useful information such as Hot Spots, Tips on riding, Gear, Videos and more. For all water sports enthusiasts, especially boarders. I'd recommend this site for a look around. It's loaded with cool information for boarding of all types and focused on those who have access to fresh water only.

You never know, there may be a fresh water "hot spot" closer to home than you might imagine. If you're headed out to do some boarding don't forget to take a waterproof camera case, so you can capture and record those fun and fond memories spent riding the waves, rivers and rapids!

I would like to send visitors to this wonderful Hawaii Surf News Website I discovered while "web surfing." It's probably the coolest surfing site I've ever ran into regarding current wave conditions at the many great surfing spots available, focused on HI. This site has so many features it's difficult to simply report on, it must be experienced to be truly appreciated. A tip of the hat to the producers of this great website!

If you surf Hawaii or are planning a trip for that purpose - this is a must stop! I have to warn you though - you may suffer from information overload. They have thought of everything you would want to know and loads more. Check it out!

"Surf along north facing shores will be 4 to 6 feet today lowering to 2 to 4 feet Tuesday."

The Steelhead Are Gathering

They're Back!

Along the Lake Erie shores, at most of the tributaries, the Steelhead are gathering at the mouths and ready to move upstream. Nothing turns my friend on more than catching steelhead, browns, rainbows locally and nearby.

He alerted me Sunday night that they were going to be out and hitting some honey holes this week. Not being an avid trout fisherman I still manage to get excited discussing new tackle or other gear obtained since the last run of fish.

I asked him what they were using for bait and he relied "anything", translating to live bait, spinners, spoons, flies and jigs. He told me he was having his best luck with a hand tied jig, very lightly weighted and trailing about 6 feet behind a small bobber to keep it running at just the right depth for his presentations. This is an easily adjusted rig, slide the bobber forward to run shallower or let more line out to run a bit deeper. Of course the rate of retrieval can account for much of the same manual adjustments.

I told him that I found that very interesting, since we have for years, used the same technique on ultralight spinning gear to land large panfish. They really hit it hard, the bobber snapping straight into the air when the giant bluegills, rock bass, crappie and other panfish took the lure. This rig absolutely triggers some slamming hook-ups!

He whipped out his small fly box and showed me his handiwork grinning as he described the lethal attributes of each and every fly and jig. I smiled too, although not a salmon or trout fisherman, I am a dedicated fisherman, I just target other species as my favorites.

I went out to the car and made him a gift of an Ewa-Marine waterproof all purpose pouch to slide his small metal lure case into. His aluminum case might not rust but the waterproof pouch will also keep your gear floating, bobbing at the surface of the water for an easy and welcome retrieval.

Time to get the waders out guys, looks like those robust steelhead will be hanging around within casting distance soon, if they're not already!

Jet Ski Legislation

No More Whining!

Recently, legislation has been passed - since rumors last year began circulating about what could be done to avoid the unsafe practices, along with the constant nerve grinding whine, that the increasing thousands of jet skis were creating in our area of the Great Lakes.

Being a fun loving water sports kind of guy, I even got to a point where the mere sight of SUV's full of tourists, towing one or more of these wild little watercraft made me cringe as well. They wouldn't follow the "rules of the road", like speeding through channels of slow moving boats at 50 mph, weaving in and out of traffic and generally pissing people off.

Local tourism areas began publishing stories about such infractions to such a point that local State Representatives finally have passed a bill that requires jet ski operators to pass testing before they can be licensed to operate them on the lake.

What a relief it's been this summer without the hundreds of jet ski's mindlessly racing back and forth without any purpose but to spin around and capsize on their own wakes. No more 10 yr old operators who don't know how to read the speed signs in channels or care to obey them if they could read to begin with. Jet skis aren't particularly loved in our area, chiefly a fishing haven, where such antics not well tolerated by serious minded visitors.

The USCG is really showing a much stronger than usual presence this past summer and things have quieted down by 75%. A much needed fix to a viral problem these watercraft were becoming. Perhaps the great leap in fuel prices had something to add to these other measures.

Again, let me say that a jet ski is a lot of fun to ride but they have, for some or all of these reasons, slowed down, making for a much quieter and safer summer with less jet ski's on the lake. I hope that any readers who love these little critters don't get too ruffled, but something had to give. A little common sense has limited the amount of nuisance they caused but responsible operators are still welcome!

Perch Bonanza In Lake Erie!

Perch Fishing In Full Swing

My friends at the local fish company have told me that the near shore perch honey holes are producing decent catches of Yellow Perch, but are very small and barely "keeper" sized.

Compare these catches with those being taken in deeper water, North and East of the Bass Islands and I'm told that the perch being taken much further from shore and near the Canadian border are enormous. Really big hauls of monster yellow perch!

They told me that clients are catching 4 and 5 man limits in just under an hour, lots of double headers and all very, very big. Like 10 to 12 inches average size. As our old buddy Al Lindner says "I heard dat, some really big pigs!"

While this area is famous for Walleye primarily, Fall offers a bonanza of jumbo yellow perch and smallmouth bass fishing. If you're in the area you can rent private charters for 6 people or take your sweet time and take a fishing trip on one of the many "head" or "walk on" boats for a pittance. You're bound to catch enough for dinner and have a great day on the water. Don't forget to have your waterproof camera with you for memories of your fishing trip!

You know what Auggie says right? Auggie, long departed, was always one to mention "it don't take long once you get into 'em"!
